If you like your Batman experience with "giant Joker heads with teeth made of people, neon bo staff battles, shiny costumes, and a sleek Batmobile," then a new, live stage show featuring the Caped Crusader was made for you. The psychedelic-looking production has been making the rounds across Latin America, Europe, and the United Kingdom. Now Batman Live will make its North American debut on September 5 in Anaheim, California at the Honda Center before touring St. Paul, San Jose, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Oklahoma City, Rio Rancho, Colorado Springs, and Loveland. It's an all-ages spectacle that producer Nick Grace says will feature stunts, pyrotechnics, illusions, and video sequences. He promises the DC superhero will not be singing and dancing — or even...

Warner Bros. Consumer Products (Wbcp), DC Entertainment and Nick Grace of Water Lane Productions Ltd (Wlp) report that "Batman Live", a new theatrical 'live' event, will focus on the story of 'Dick Grayson' (aka 'Robin'), a circus performer who loses his parents to crime.
"...Faithfully adapted from the DC Comics characters and stories, 'Batman Live' focuses on Robin’s quest for justice, which leads him to follow in the footsteps of his hero, the mysterious vigilante known as the 'Batman' – much to the dismay of his protective guardian, millionaire 'Bruce Wayne' – who secretly happens to be Batman.
"This dynamic triangle resolves itself in a non-stop thrill-ride across 'Gotham City' transforming Bruce Wayne and Dick Grayson into the legendary crime-fighters Batman and Robin.
The audience is transported from the 'Big Top' of 'Haly’s Circus' to the lower depths of 'Arkham Asylum' – from the glittering...

The producers of the Batman Live arena extravaganza have just released some new details about the production which will have its world premiere in Manchester in July.
It is going to be like no play audiences have ever seen because it will be performed in Britain’s biggest, grandest arenas rather than theatres. According to the Telegraph, "There will be acrobatics, pyrotechnics, stuntmen, supervillains and screeching Batmobiles on a 100ft-wide, 60ft-deep performance area. Behind them, a giant video wall will flash panels from comic strips and special effects, and give the appearance of interacting with the live performers on stage."
This sounds interesting, but has me concerned seeing as how it seems to be as large of a production as the much maligned $65 million Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark. With serious accidents and complicated acrobatic maneuvers Spider-Man is on shaky ground. For Spider-Man to succeed it must be able to...

With Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark fully revealed to the public (and struggling to evolve into a show worth paying more attention to) it's time to get more detail on the next superhero stage spectacular. That would be Batman Live, which is planned to premiere in Manchester this July, and which will then embark upon a tour of arenas in the UK and Europe before moving to Us arenas in summer 2012. Producer Nick Grace (Walking With Dinosaurs, Mamma Mia!) promises [1] a huge scale and went with arenas because they can accommodate "pyrotechnics and large video screens and lots of action." Now you can see some set designs for the show, which certainly seem to use the potential for a large scale. If the sets come together like that, they'll be visually impressive, for certain. Lots of room for movement and action, and the circus set promises good stuff for the telling of Robin's origin.

Julie Taymor's musical Spider-Man: Turn off the Dark is the holiday gift that keeps on giving in 2010. You want to see Spidey flying onstage? How about the musical version of J. Jonah Jameson (Edit: or Hammerhead, probably) and Kraven the Hunter? It's all right here in two new video spots. Plus, just because Spidey can't have all the fun on stage, there's some newish info about Batman Live and how Robin figures into the performance. Before we go any further, here's the TV spot for the Spider-Man musical, courtesy of Bleeding Cool [1]. I've laughed about the costume [2] designs [3] for Spider-Man: Turn off the Dark, but as I see more clips of the stage set and performance I can't deny that it is a wildly ambitious project. That doesn't necessarily translate to 'good,' but the set designs and the fact that there are people flying all over the stage is pretty impressive.

Even though the "Spider-Man" musical is experiencing further delays, it's not the end for stage shows based on popular comic book characters. Case in point -- "Batman Live," an upcoming live show that's set to tour across Europe next summer.
The show's official global launch was announced this morning in a press release, with the show opening on July 20, 2011 in Manchester and hitting a variety of European cities before landing in North America in the summer of 2012. Tickets go on sale this Friday.
"Batman Live" is set to feature a wealth of characters from the Caped Crusader's surrounding community including Alfred, Robin, and villains like The Joker, Riddler, Catwoman and The Penguin. The "brand new original storyline" takes place over various settings including Gotham City, Wayne Manor, the Bat Cave and Arkham Asylum.

Warner Bros. Consumer Products and DC Entertainment announced today that the Batman Live world arena tour is kicking-off next summer. Batman Live is based on an original story being created exclusively for the show. Producer Nick Grace explained that the show is "a totally unique experience. This is not a musical but a high quality live show with a thrilling Batman story, filled with action, that will appeal to adults, teenagers and families." It will be interesting to see exactly what they have planned for this show. I'm not expecting much from it, but who knows, it could end up being incredibly awesome. I guess we'll just have to wait and see.
