After two years of virtual programming, the saints returned to New Orleans’ Caesars Superdome for the Essence Music Festival (now officially the Essence Festival of Culture) with mixed results. Nearly 30 years ago, the Black women’s magazine launched in the early 1970s created a celebration of music that has evolved into far more than a series of concerts with well-recognized brands (longtime sponsors Coca-Cola and Ford, among many others, play pivotal roles in Black consumer outreach).

We at the Tribeca Film Festival always like to go that extra mile. As the Festival winds down, we introduce our new and exciting Day In The Life series, which goes beyond the screens and into the lives of Festival filmmakers. John Forte, the musician, star and executive producer of The Russian Winter, is the first to capture our eye. On Friday night, the inspirational documentary The Russian Winter had its world premiere at the 2012 Tribeca Film Festival. This event had Tff crowds buzzing and drew celebrities like Natasha Bedingfield, Petra Nemcova, Sara Ziff, Michael Kenneth Williams, Ben Taylor and many more. Perhaps the biggest thrill on the red carpet was the appearance of many of the musicians featured in the film: in addition to Bedingfield, Russian artists Sunsay and Alina Orlova crossed continents to be at the premiere in support of John Forte and the film. The Russian Winter is a stirring music documentary to be sure, but in many ways it is just as much a road movie. The film follows former Fugees member John Forte from his early years growing up in Brownsville, Brooklyn, to the prestigious Philip Exeter Academy, which he attended on scholarship, to a prison cell in Texas following a drug arrest, and ...

Tribeca: As the subject and executive producer of The Russian Winter, how would you describe the film in your own words? John FortÉ: The Russian Winter documents our nine-week tour through Moscow, Russia and beyond. Our primary mission was not only to share our own music, but also to collaborate with Russian artists. We wanted to immerse ourselves in the culture and to learn how people on the other side of the world view their lives. We were privileged enough to be able to donate all the proceeds to local charities and other organizations, including The Happy Hearts Fund. We didn't just issue checks; we showed up and visited these orphanages and hospitals to share our music. Tribeca: How did The Russian Winter come to fruition? John FORTÉ: It originally started as a plan for a weekend trip, but Russia seemed like a long way to go for...

A new big batch of films have been added to the 2012 Tribeca Film Festival line-up, and while there aren't a lot of big premieres in the bunch, there's a lot to catch up with for those of you (and us) who didn't attend Tiff 2011, Sundance 2012, etc. etc.
Highlights for us include Sarah Polley's sophomore directorial effort "Take This Waltz," starring Seth Rogen and Michelle Williams, Julie Delpy's "2 Days In New York," starring herself and Chris Rock in a sequel to "2 Days in Paris," Marjane Satrapi and Vincent Paronnaud's "Chicken With Plums," their directorial follow-up to the very excellent 2007 animated film "Persepolis," Lynn Shelton's "Your Sister's Sister" starring Emily Blunt, Rosemarie DeWitt and Mark Duplass, and "Lola Versus," Daryl Wein and Zoe Lister Jones' follow-up to the celebrated 2009 micro-budgeted indie "Breaking Upwards" starring Lister Jones herself alongside Greta Gerwig, Joel Kinnaman (AMC's "The Killing," the new "RoboCop"), Bill Pullman,...
