The kids are basically all right in People, Places, Things, director James C. Strouse’s third outing as director, but the adult characters are having a much harder time navigating existence after divorce. While a rather standard set of issues are examined, with a slight edge considering this is from the perspective of a jilted father figure, the scribe-helmer continues to display his strengths for creating well-rounded, genuinely effective principal characters. Featuring a flawed yet appealing group of people struggling to overcome unplanned circumstances, this standard but nicely streamlined venture features winning performances. Despite a lack of novelty, Strouse’s film stands out in a mix familiar to any purveyors of the glossier side of American indie cinema.

In case you didn't know, "Harry Potter" author J.K. Rowling shares her birthday, July 31, with the titular boy wizard, and to celebrate, she took to Twitter on Friday to thank fans for their love and support.
In a series of tweets, Rowling acknowledged her and Harry's shared special day, and revealed that she's vacationing somewhere sunny with her family to celebrate. The author, who turns 50 today, then joked that she was going to post a picture of herself with her dog, because "in dog years I'm dead."
We wouldn't expect anything other than loveliness and cheekiness from the notoriously hilarious and heartfelt author. In fact, that loveliness extended to yet another high-profile person who shares Rowling's birthday: "Daily Show" correspondent Jessica Williams, who Rowling also gave a shout-out to. Somehow, it just makes sense that Rowling would love the equally-awesome Williams. (Williams later responded, "This was awesome to wake up to!

People, Places, Things Trailer. James C. Strouse‘s People, Places, Things (2015) movie trailer stars Jermaine Clement, Regina Hall, Jessica Williams, and Michael Chernus. People, Places, Things‘ synopsis: “Will Henry is a newly single graphic novelist balancing parenting his young twin daughters and a classroom full of students while exploring and navigating the rich complexities of new love and letting go of the woman who left him.”
If you’re a Flight of The Conchords fan, this trailer should at the very least remind you how great Jermaine Clement’s disposition, attitude and delivery is. He’s wonderful to watch, and even though this seems like a very familiar movie (any mid-life crisis “dramedy”), it could be interesting enough based solely on Clement’s addition.

The premise of suddenly finding yourself single and having to start over is nothing new. But add the appeal of Jemaine Clement, mix in a little bit of fatherhood, and you get "People Places Things," and the first trailer for the comedy has arrived. Co-starring Regina Hall, Jessica Williams, Stephanie Allynne, Michael Chernus, Aundrea Gadsby and Gia Gadsby, the story centers on Will Henry a graphic novelist and a professor in New York City, whose life is turned upside down when he discovers his longtime girlfriend cheating with one of their friends. Fast-forward a year, and Will is still trying to put his life back together, raise twin daughters, and enter the dating scene. Premiering earlier this year at the Sundance Film Festival, Katie Walsh fell for the picture, calling it "a funny rumination on fatherhood, marriage, and how relationships fall together and fall apart" that's "a total charmer." And Kristen Wiig is so funny...I like this girl Linda Cardellini a lot. And Emma Stone is funny. There are some funny girls out there."
Bill, there are A Lot of funny women out there. Here are...

His fellow Flight Of The Conchords star Bret McKenzie has gone on to success with his meme-friendly roles in the Lord Of The Rings and Hobbit films and his Oscar-winning work with The Muppets. But with Dinner For Schmucks, Gentlemen Broncos and (ahem) Men In Black 3, Jemaine Clement hasn't done too shabbily either. For his next role, however, he's returning to the indie territority of the likes of Eagle Vs. Shark. He's starring in People Places Things for Grace Is Gone director James C. Strouse. The film sees Clement playing a struggling comics artist trying to cope with writer's block, two young daughters and a teaching job. There's also romance on the horizon, but in order to enjoy he'll have to finally stop pining for the woman who left him previously.Regina Hall, Stephanie Allynne and Jessica Williams are elsewhere on the cast list, and the screenplay is by Strouse himself.

Very few episodes of Steve Buscemi's AOL talk show Park Bench actually take place on a bench. Or in a park. But the actor-host still gets his guests to talk as candidly as if they were simply hanging outside with a friend. "I'm no Dick Cavett, but I did manage to squeak by," Buscemi says of hosting the show, which unveils its final seven episodes simultaneously on Thursday, July 10. Among the guests: Method Man, the Beastie Boys, Daily Show correspondent Jessica Williams, artist Julian Schnabel, and Buscemi's Boardwalk Empire co-stars Michael Kenneth Williams and Bobby Cannavale.
"Method Man likes corny jokes, so he's my kind of guy," Buscemi says. "The Beastie Boys are very funny, and are also very good at sports. And Jessica Williams does a mean pigeon impersonation." For a sample, check out this exclusive outtake with the Beasties.

Jessica Williams, number five on our list of Daily Show correspondents most-likely to take over The Colbert Report's time slot when Stephen Colbert departs for CBS, is saying that role is not for her. Sunday's (Feb. 9) episode of "Girls" had one thing on its mind: Settling.
Each of our core four, nearing or in their mid-twenties, have been struggling with the idea of the dreaded settle throughout most of Season 3, but in "Free Snacks," each seemed to look directly down the barrel of that gun.
For Hannah (Lena Dunham), this means getting a real job. After the bad luck dealt her way that snuffed out her young publishing career before it ever really had a chance to live, she's landed herself a job writing Neiman-Marcus advertorials for GQ.
It's a good gig -- steady pay, benefits and that most glorious of snack rooms. And turns out Hannah has a knack for it. The catch? It's writing, but not quite. There's no artistic control. This writing is not hers. It can't have her voice or express what she'd like to express. It's meant to sell clothes.

Hannah is making a change in her life, saying goodbye to Ray's and hello to GQ in Girls' "Free Snacks."
The episode begins with Hannah (Lena Dunham) informing Ray (Alex Karpovsky) that she’s leaving his coffee shop to write for GQ. Well, not exactly GQ. She’s writing for Neiman Marcus for GQ — the special paid advertising section that is supposed to trick readers to think it’s not an actual advertisement.
Ray And Marnie Get To Know Each Other
In the episode's opening scene, Ray making coffee and Shoshanna (Zosia Mamet) is lurking. Later, Shoshanna just happens to meander past the court where Ray is playing basketball. Could this be a coincidence? I think not.
Ray wants to further explore his relationship with Marnie (Allison Williams), so Ray retreats to his office to call her to check in on her and see if there’s any chance...

In recent years, HBO’s Girls has sparked some fruitful conversations about body image, sex, feminism, and race. Last year, it also sparked the idea for the podcast Two Brown Girls, where we (critics Zeba Blay and Fariha Roísín) discuss film, television and pop culture from the perspective of two women of color. We started the podcast initially as a reaction to the lack of PoC representation on Girls, a show that (perhaps unfairly) was purported in its first season to represent an entire generation of 20-somethings. With the show now in its third season, reportedly set to feature its first black female characters including Danielle Brooks (Orange is the New Black) and Jessica Williams (The...

Both John Oliver and Stephen Colbert addressed the NYPD's controversial stop-and-frisk policy on Tuesday, with Colbert sarcastically lamenting it being ruled unconstitutional.
Oliver, however, opted to try to put the whole thing into terms white people could understand. He then turned to correspondent Jessica Williams, who explained that it's not less stop-and-frisk we need, but more... and in the right high-crime areas, i.e. Wall Street.
Watch Oliver's segment above and Williams' report below.

On Thursday, John Oliver tucked into the Paula Deen racism story with gusto and seemed to enjoy every buttery bite.
After taking us through Deen's outrageous testimony, Oliver turned to correspondent Jessica Williams who diagnosed the celebrity chef with either type 1 or type 2 racism. Unfortunately, Williams explained, there is no cure, but Deen can manage her symptoms.
When Oliver commended Williams for generously offering suggestions to someone who had said something so hurtful, Williams put it all into perspective: "Oh, please. Paula Deen's words aren't hurting black people anywhere near as much as her recipes are."
Check out Oliver set up the story with some rapid fire jokes above (his southern accent is back again!), and Williams' scathingly funny analysis below.
