A new episode of The Arrow in the Head Show has just been released, and in this one hosts John “The Arrow” Fallon and Lance Vlcek are looking back at what may be the least popular entry in the Alien franchise – and if that’s the case, it’s an accomplishment that it passed some of the lesser entries on the race to the bottom. The movie in question is 2017’s Alien: Covenant (watch it Here) – and to find out what The Arrow and Lance think of it, check out the video embedded above!
Directed by Ridley Scott from a screenplay by John Logan and Dante Harper (and a story by Jack Paglen and Michael Green), Alien: Covenant has the following synopsis: Bound for a remote planet on the far side of the galaxy, members of the colony ship Covenant discover what they think to be an uncharted paradise. This article contains Spiderhead spoilers.
It looks almost blissful. That serene sunset Steve Abnesti (Chris Hemsworth) imagines he’s flying toward might as well be heaven for the good doctor. After all, he’s unlikely to see the real thing once his plane smashes headlong into a mountain.
So ends Abnesti Pharmaceuticals’ experiments on the remote island and institute of “Spiderhead,” and so too ends Steve Abnesti. It’s a surprisingly cheeky conclusion to Joseph Kosinski’s new science fiction thriller out now on Netflix. Up to this point, audiences have been asked to consider how dark things can get as the backstories of each inmate become clear, and the prospect of escape from their guilt over past mistakes seems even less likely than it does from this gilded hellhole. And yet, both Jeff (Miles Teller) and Lizzy (Jurnee Smollett) live to console each other another day and figure out...

In real life, there would probably be no shortage of people willing to commit crimes if it resulted in being given free reign to wander around a minimum-security prison and receive psychedelic drugs administered by Chris Hemsworth. So it’s not too much of a stretch to go along with the imaginative premise of Netflix’s new, nearly unclassifiable film starring the MCU veteran along with Miles Teller and Jurnee Smollett.
Based on a short story by George Saunders, Joseph Kosinski’s Spiderhead could be categorized as sci-fi, except its central conceit isn’t all that far removed from our “better living through chemistry” reality. It’s a thriller at times, but also a wickedly funny dark comedy. And it features a nostalgia-inducing yacht rock soundtrack that slyly comments on the action.

Along came a spider…but these inmates are the ones really caught in a deceitful web.
Netflix’s psychedelic psychological thriller “Spiderhead” pairs mind-freeing drugs with the physically constraining prison system. Based on George Saunders’ New Yorker short story “Escape from Spiderhead,” the film stars Jurnee Smollett and Miles Teller as two inmates who reflect on their past crimes thanks to drug-induced trips in a state-of-the-art penitentiary, run by visionary scientist Steve Abnesti (Chris Hemsworth).
Joseph Kosinski directs the Netflix film, premiering June 17.
The official synopsis teases a cat and mouse game as Hemsworth instructs prisoners to wear devices that administer dosages of experimental drugs, in exchange for reduced sentences. There are no bars, no cells, or orange jumpsuits in this revolutionary prison called Spiderhead. Instead, “incarcerated volunteers” are free…with certain boundaries. What is free will if one man has control over all minds and bodies?

A prison that encourages drug use? Well, that just might have to be the stuff of fiction…for now.
Netflix has adapted George Saunders’ New Yorker short story “Escape from Spiderhead,” about two inmates (played by Jurnee Smollett and Miles Teller) who grapple with their past crimes while living in a state-of-the-art penitentiary run by a brilliant visionary (Chris Hemsworth) who experiments on inmates with psychedelic drugs.
“Spiderhead” premieres June 17 on the streamer.
The tradeoff for being a test subject is a commuted prison sentence, but when the open-concept prison is challenged, the experiments start to push the limits of free will. The psychological thriller is directed by Joseph Kosinski and written by producer Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick.
Director Kosinski revealed that the pop classic soundtrack, with tracks including Thomas Dolby’s “She Blinded Me With Science” and Hall & Oates’ “You Make My Dreams,” came to him while at the dentist.

“Treadstone,” which begins in East Berlin in 1973 and zooms ahead to multiple locations in the present day, is, we’re told in its credits, “based on an organization from the Bourne series of novels by Robert Ludlum.” The description seems apt, in its clunky way. The Treadstone organization, which trains people to be supersoldiers and to keep their tactical knowledge subconsciously buried, is an element of Jason Bourne’s story now surgically cut off from the context and narrative richness of a good novel or film. And “Treadstone” feels, too, based on an organization and not a novel or film in its rigorous movement between plotlines, something that comes to feel less like narrative balance and more like mandated check-ins on a show that hasn’t yet decided what it wants to be about.
These plotlines are generally similar enough: A person, somewhere, comes to realize the powers they contain within them,...

‘Nekrotronic.’
Kiah Roache-Turner’s Nekrotronic opened in the Us last weekend as a multi-platform release.
Momentum Pictures launched the sci-fi horror comedy starring Monica Bellucci, Ben O’Toole, David Wenham, Caroline Ford, Tess Haubrich and Bob Epine Savea in cinemas in 10 cities and on VOD and digital HD.
The eOne-owned distributor did not share box office figures, which are typically modest for day-and-date releases. The benefit of the theatrical exposure is that the reviews and publicity give the film a profile which pays off in ancillary revenues.
The director trimmed five minutes of exposition scenes after the world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, resulting in more favourable reviews, particularly from genre websites.
For example, We Are Movie Geek’s Marc Butterfield hailed the film as “hilarious, fun, action packed, and full of gross, splashy, gooey moments; in other words, fantastic.”
Butterfield observed: “The movie has a nice amalgamation of story elements from Ghostbusters,...

USA Network has released the first trailer for their upcoming Bourne spinoff series Treadstone, and it actually looks like it’s going to be an action-packed series. There are some brutal looking fight sequences teased in this first trailer.
The ten-episode series was created by Tim Kring (Heroes), and it “explores the origin story and present-day actions of a CIA black ops program known as Operation Treadstone — a covert program that uses behavior-modification protocol to turn recruits into nearly superhuman assassins.” The first season will follow sleeper agents across the globe as they’re mysteriously “awakened” to resume their deadly missions. They are part of a Treadstone program called “Cicada”.
When talking about the series, executive producer Ben Smith, who also served as producer of Jason Bourne and The Bourne Legacy, told Entertainment Weekly:
“These Cicadas have very different trajectories upon finding themselves ‘awakened’ over a decade after volunteering for...

USA has released the trailer for its “Bourne” franchise spinoff series, “Treadstone,” and we quickly learn that a legion of “sleeper agents” are waking up to discover that they’ve become superhuman assassins.
Several well-choreographed fight sequences follow, which you can watch in the action-packed 45-second trailer above.
A TV spinoff of Universal’s “Bourne” film franchise that starred Matt Damon, “Treadstone” will explore the origin story and present-day actions of a CIA black ops program known as Treadstone — a covert operation that uses behavior modification protocol to turn its agents into nearly unstoppable superhuman assassins. The first season of “Treadstone” follows sleeper agents across the globe, as they’re mysteriously “awakened” to resume their deadly missions.

Coming from writer and director Kiah Roache-Turner, I was very much looking forward to new Australian horror comedy Nekrotronic. His previous movie Wyrmwood: Road of the Dead was a fantastic all action kick up the ass that the zombie genre needed, so a new movie from him about demons sounded even more intriguing. And we’ve had to wait five long years for it!
It would be too simple to say this is a movie about ghosts. Even if you opened that up a little and said it was a ‘supernatural’ movie, that would be too simple. Because this involves demons, the Internet, zombies (kind of), possession and yes, ghosts.

From Guerrila Films and Hopscotch Features, directed by Kiah Roache-Turner, debuted in 2018 Canada during the Toronto International Film Festival.
This is a B movie by even the most generous standards, but like it’s predecessor, Wyrmwood, it’s a great one, depending upon how much you like these kinds of movies. While Wyrmwood took on the zombie apocalypse, Nekrotronic takes on demons, demonic possession, and the dangers of cell phone life. Movies out of Australia always seem to have a better sense of humor about these things than the stock American films (with Zombieland being a notable exception). The cast handles their roles with appropriate amounts of gravity and incredulity. The plot, in a nutshell, is about Howard North, a sewage maintenance worker who by chance finds out his true identity in the middle of an attempt by demons to gain dominion over the world by...

"Suck on this!" Momentum Pictures has debuted an official trailer for the indie action horror comedy film Nekrotronic, made by Australian filmmaker Kiah Roache-Turner (Wyrmwood). This wacky, trippy, neon-filled demon hunter film is about a man who discovers that he is part of a secret sect of magical beings who hunt down and destroy demons in the internet. Ben O'Toole plays Howard 'Howie' North, a down-on-his-luck sewage worker dragged into a global conflict. Monica Bellucci plays the villain, an evil demon who absorbs people's souls to gain more power. The full cast includes David Wenham, Caroline Ford, Tess Haubrich, Benedict Hardie, and Epine Bob Savea. This reminds of all these amazing films I'd find in the back corner of my local VHS rental store, totally weird & badass & so fun. This actually looks mega cool. Ben O’Toole.
After graduating from Waapa in 2011, Ben O’Toole played policeman Pete for three seasons of Love Child, had supporting roles in The Water Diviner and Hacksaw Ridge and co-starred in the Us movies Detroit and 12 Strong.
The Brisbane-born actor plays the leads in Alister Grierson’s comedic thriller Bloody Hell and in Kiah Roache-Turner’s horror-comedy Nekrotronic, yet he is far from satisfied with where he is at in his career.

Working with Mel Gibson on Hacksaw Ridge and with Chris Hemsworth on 12 Strong were great learning experiences.

‘Nekrotronic.’
Kiah Roache-Turner’s sci-fi horror comedy Nekrotronic will be released in the Us in select cinemas and on VOD and digital HD on August 9 by Momentum Pictures.
“I’m really excited: I think day-and-date is the future for most independent films in the Us,” Kiah tells If. “Some say it is the end of cinema but it’s not: it’s a different way of delivering films to eyeballs.”
One advantage of the day-and-date strategy is limiting the potential for piracy. The Roache-Turner brothers’ Wyrmwood: Road of the Dead was available on iTunes in the Us before the Australian release. “Piracy killed us,” he says.
Produced by Andrew Mason and Troy Lum for Hopscotch Features and Tristan Roache-Turner for Guerrilla Films, Nekrotronic stars Monica Bellucci as Finnegan, CEO of the sinister Daemokon corporation, who is determined to feast on every human soul on the planet via a new smartphone app.

A high-tech and stylish homage to Ghostbusters and 80s/90s action films, Nekrotronic premiered at Tiff last year and was definitely an indie crowd-pleaser so it's no surprise to hear that it will be getting a theatrical and VOD release later this year from Momentum Pictures.
"Howard North, a down on his luck sewage worker, gets dragged into a global conflict between the Nekromancers, a family of badass demon hunters, and Finnegan (Monica Bellucci) - an evil demon who absorbs people's souls to increase her power. When Howard finds out the truth behind Finnegan's past and her dark plans for the future, he teams up with his new friends to discover he is the ultimate Nekromancer, the only one with the power to defeat her and save the world."

Tess Haubrich in ‘Bad Mothers’.
Tess Haubrich jumped at the chance to play a key role in Bad Mothers at very short notice after Jessica Marais was forced to withdraw for health reasons – not least because she had never worked with female directors.
Sian Davies, Catriona McKenzie and Geoff Bennett directed the Nine Network’s ensemble comedy-drama from Jungle Entertainment and Filthy Productions.
“It’s quite shocking that I had never worked on shows with female directors, except on short films,” says Haubrich, whose credits include Pine Gap, Wolf Creek 2, Ridley Scott’s Alien: Covenant, the Jackie Chan starrer Bleeding Steel and the Turner-Roache brothers Nekrotronic.
The Sydney-based actress was told one Friday night that she had won the role of Sarah in Bad Mothers and on the following Monday morning was in Melbourne for the start of two weeks pre-production.

The cast of ‘Bad Mothers’
As parents, Gavin Strawhan and Rachel Lang agreed that being a mother can be an impossible job and that no matter how hard they try, women will sometimes feel they are bad mothers.
The Auckland-based founders of Filthy Productions came up with the concept of a comedy-drama about five mums whose kids go to the same school, overlaid with a murder mystery, and pitched it to the Nine Network.
Execs at Nine suggested Strawhan and Lang find an Australian partner, which turned out to be Jungle Entertainment. The result is Bad Mothers, which launches on Nine at 9 pm on February 18 and across the ditch on Tvnz on February 20.
The ensemble show stars Tess Haubrich as Sarah, whose perfect life as a Gp, wife and mother is shattered when she discovers her husband Anton (Daniel MacPherson) is having an affair. Even worse, her best friend is...

Following that he played a star Afl recruit in Screentime’s Playing For Keeps, which Network 10 has renewed for next year.
Capping a memorable year, he was named among the Casting Guild of Australia’s 10 Rising Stars, together with Michael Sheasby, Harry Greenwood, Tess Haubrich, Markella Kavenagh, George Zhao, Milly Alcock, Kimie Tsukakoshi, Harvey Zielinski and Alexandra Jensen.

Nikki Barrett and Anousha Zarkesh won multiple prizes at the Casting Guild of Australia Awards presented last Friday in Melbourne.
Barrett received the awards for her work in See Pictures/Gran Via Productions/Windalong Productions’ Breath (best casting in a feature film), Easy Tiger’s Jack Irish series 2 (TV drama) and Fremantle Australia’s Picnic at Hanging Rock (TV miniseries and telemovie).
Zarkesh took home the awards for Princess Pictures’ Wrong Kind of Black (best achievement in casting) and Scarlett Pictures’ Black Comedy series 3 (TV comedy).
“We had a lucky year in that all three of these projects were very collaborative casting processes with the filmmakers actively engaged in trying to find something true to the world they were creating. It’s always the best kind of casting to be involved in and shows on screen,” Barrett tells If.
