The Oscar-frontrunning Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” was the big winner at Asifa-Hollywood’s 51st Annie Awards (held February 17 at UCLA’s Royce Hall), grabbing seven awards, topped by best animated feature. As a 66 percent Oscar predictor, the Annie win bodes well for Sony and producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller.
The other “Spider-Verse” awards were for FX, character design, direction, music, production design, and editorial.
The Oscar-nominated dark horse, “Robot Dreams” (Neon), from Pablo Berger, won best independent feature, and “War Is Over! Inspired by the Music of John & Yoko” (ElectroLeague) took best short. The prestige short got a boost in its race for the Oscar. It’s directed by Pixar alum Dave Mullins and executive produced by Sean Ono Lennon, in partnership with Peter Jackson and his Wētā FX Limited animation team.

The long-awaited animated feature adaptation of Nd Stevenson’s cult graphic novel Nimona enjoyed a triumphant world premiere at the Annecy International Film Festival on Wednesday evening ahead of its launch on Netflix on June 30.
Set in a futuristic medieval world, the story revolves around the titular Nimona (Chloë Grace Moretz), a mischievous, shape-shifting teenager with a violent streak, and Ballister Blackheart (Riz Ahmed), an up and coming knight of humble origins.
When Blackheart is framed for a heinous crime and is forced to go on the run, Nimona becomes an unlikely saviour, initially because she believes he is guilty and thinks he is a kindred spirit.
Blackheart is determined to prove his innocence, especially in the eyes of his long-time soul mate, fellow knight Ambrosius Goldenloin.
The work is adapted from Stevenson’s award-winning graphic novel of the same name, which in turn was developed from a webcomic about...

As massive and business-minded a corporation as it is, Walt Disney Animation leaves room in their pipeline for experimentation. Each year, crew members on any and every rung of the bureaucratic ladder have the opportunity to pitch short films to John Lasseter and the Wda "story trust," a group of the company's veteran directors, writers, and artists. The goal: Push story and animation technology to places where the feature slate can't go (at least, not until the shorts lay the groundwork). Animator Patrick Osborne pitched "Feast" as a living work of concept art — graphic, fluid, and nostalgic — that also fell into the Disney mold, a sweet story of a dog that loves food. Lasseter took to it, and this November, the fully rendered short hits theaters in front of "Big Hero 6." Mimicking the artistic style of illustrator Jeff Turley (who previously art directed "Paperman"), "Feast" chronicles the life of a puppy named Winston,...

Included in today's MPAA bulletin is the rating for a new Walt Disney short called Paperman that I had not heard of before so I did a little snooping and it turns out it's directed by John Kahrs, an animator who worked on such Disney films as Ratatouille, The Incredibles and Toy Story 2. Kahrs also served as animation supervisor on Tangled and he's teamed with Tangled animator Patrick Osborne who posted the following on his personal blog on December 29, 2011: We're finishing up a rather exciting project at Disney in the next few weeks. It's been keeping me pretty busy and away from this blog. The short is called Paperman. Directed by John Kahrs, the short will be running the festival circuit next year. We're very proud of this one and can't wait to show the world. produced by Kristina Reed animation supervision by myself art direction by Jeff Turley Vfx sup.

Tis' a dark and stormy night, as Seargeant Jeff Turley (Enver Gjokaj) prowls his home, looking for hidden insurgents. He's reliving his worst nightmares from Iraq, and almost shoots his ten year old son in the process. It's obvious he's suffering from Ptsd, but he keeps claiming it's not post war stress that's making him take up arms against the night. Someone is trying to kill him. The army calls in Cal Lightman (Tim Roth) and Gillian Foster (Kelli Williams) to suss out the fact or fiction behind Sgt. Turley's claims that someone is still after him, long after leaving the battlegrounds. They meet Turley in the Va hospital, in restraints, and it only takes Lightman a few minutes to know that the man is disturbed, but truthful. Yes, Cal Lightman is That good. Back at the Lightman Group HQ, Torres (Monica Raymund) and Loker (Brendan Hines) are setting up observation outside the cube,...

Sometimes, it's hard to let go of the past. And sometimes, there's a good reason for that. On 'Lie to Me' (Mon., 8Pm Et on Fox), Dr. Cal Lightman (Tim Roth) tries to treat a new client who is scarred by memories of what he's done. The client in question is an Iraq War veteran named Sgt. Jeff Turley (played by Enver Gjokaj). Sergeant Turley is tormented by his recollections of the war. But what actually happened over there?
