A Joker sequel was never technically in the cards. When director Todd Phillips made his anti-superhero origin film about the classic Batman villain — with Joaquin Phoenix in the title role — it was designed to be a standalone film. While Phillips acknowledged he was open to making a follow-up under the right circumstances, he went so far as to stress a month before the film’s October 2019 release: “We have no plans for a sequel … The movie’s not set up to [have] a sequel. We always pitched it as one movie,...

Todd Phillips’s hotly anticipated supervillain sequel “Joker: Folie à Deux” has secured itself an R rating from the MPA, as per Deadline. This is not too much of a surprise, as the 2019 smash “Joker” remains the top-grossing R-rated picture in history. Somewhat surprising, however, was the reason given by the “we’re not a censorship organization” censorship organization.
In addition to “strong violence”, “language” (sure), and “some sexuality” (okay), the group cited “brief full nudity.” Full, eh? Just how much of a clown show will we be seeing here?
“Joker: Folie à Deux”’s big draw for most audiences will be Lady Gaga’s turn as Harlene Quinzel (aka Harley Quinn) the Bugs Bunny-like psychiatrist who falls in love with the Clown Prince of Crime. Margot Robbie played the fan-favorite character in the “Suicide Squad” and “Birds of Prey” films, while Kaley Cuoco voices her in the not-for-kids animated series.

The movie ‘Joker’ (2019) was initially intended as a standalone film without sequels. However, Warner Bros. had plans for it to kickstart DC Black, a series of darker, more experimental films separate from the DC Extended Universe. Director Todd Phillips expressed interest in a sequel despite the original plan. By November 2019, the sequel was confirmed to be in development. In 2023, Gunn confirmed that ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ would not be part of the mainline Dcu; instead, it would be released under the ‘Elseworlds’ label, aligning with Matt Reeves’ ‘The Batman’ franchise.
Early in development, it was revealed that ‘Joker 2’ would be a musical, which garnered mixed reactions from fans. Recently, it’s been reported that the movie will feature around 15 covers of well-known songs, including ‘That’s Entertainment’ from the 1953 musical ‘The Band Wagon’, famously associated with Judy Garland. There’s also talk of including original songs. Details about the composers and singers remain unknown,...

“Joker” is nothing but a comedy, and the return of Joaquin Phoenix as “Batman” baddie Arthur Fleck is more than highly anticipated.
Phoenix reprises the titular role after the 2019 origin story, directed by Todd Phillips and co-penned by Scott Silver (“The Fighter”). Phoenix landed a Best Actor Oscar win for Gotham City corruption story that used “King of Comedy” tendencies and “Taxi Driver” aesthetics to convey the rot and the bile behind the rise of mega-millionaire political family the Waynes, while would-be Batman, Bruce Wayne (Dante Pereira-Olson), grows up parentless. Add in a few nods to the fact that maybe Arthur (Phoenix) may be half-siblings with Bruce, and the twisted entanglement between Joker and Batman goes deeper than other typical DC superhero films.
“Joker” was the sixth highest-grossing film of 2019 after winning the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival. The film made history as the first R-rated movie ever to gross over $1 billion worldwide.

Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker was one of the most divisive films of all time. While everyone was unanimous in their praise of the actor, the reception to the story was less than enthusiastic. Accolades poured in from all quarters for Phoenix, but so did the criticism for Todd Phillips, the director.
Even though five years have passed since the film came out, it is still talked about to this day. The film made an effort to take a different, sort of raw approach to dealing with the issues that were highlighted. Unfortunately, it was not for everyone, including renowned filmmaker Ridley Scott.

The upcoming Joker sequel, Joker: Folie à Deux, will be “mostly a jukebox musical,” featuring at least 15 covers of popular songs, according to a new report.
Directed by Todd Philips and starring Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga, Joker: Folie à Deux is due in October 2024, and though we’ve known it would be a musical since 2022, this is the first we’ve heard about the specifics of the songs. According to Variety, its “insiders privy to filming and early versions” who’ve confirmed the film’s “mostly jukebox” status.
Among the 15 covers will be the Judy Garland standard from The Band Wagon, “That’s Entertainment!” There is, too, the opportunity for “an original song (or two) to be added to the final version,” though details on who would compose or sing those numbers remain unknown.

The Joker and Harley Quinn are set to serenade audiences in “Joker: Folie à Deux,” but if, and how many original songs will be included in the film, is a mystery.
Insiders privy to filming and early versions of Todd Phillips’ eagerly awaited sequel to “Joker” tell Variety the movie leans heavily towards being “mostly a jukebox musical,” as it integrates at least 15 reinterpretations of “very well-known” songs. One is said to be “That’s Entertainment” from the 1953 musical “The Band Wagon,” famously associated with Judy Garland. However, there is a door open for an original song (or two) to be added to the final version. Details regarding who would pen the tracks, or sing the numbers are unknown. We do know, according to sources, Hildur Guðnadóttir, the Oscar-winning composer of the first “Joker” film, is said to “infuse her distinctive, haunting [music] cues” into each number. Warner Bros declined to comment.

The films in the running for the 2024 Best Original Score Oscar are “American Fiction,” “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Oppenheimer,” and “Poor Things.” Our current odds indicate that “Oppenheimer” (3/1) will take the prize, followed in order of likelihood by “Killers of the Flower Moon” (4/1), “Poor Things” (9/2), “Indiana Jones” (9/2), and “American Fiction” (9/2).
Just two of the five musicians on this roster are returning contenders, with the first-timer subgroup consisting of Jerskin Fendrix (“Poor Things”), Laura Karpman (“American Fiction”), and Robbie Robertson (“Killers of the Flower Moon”). Robertson, who died last August at age 80, is this category’s eighth posthumous nominee and first since 1977, when Bernard Herrmann earned dual bids for “Obsession” and “Taxi Driver” nearly 14 months after his death. He would be the fourth deceased composer to win an Academy Award, following Victor Young and “Limelight” (1973) duo Raymond Rasch and Larry Russell.

“Hoping your day is full of love,” director Todd Phillips wrote on Instagram on Wednesday (Valentine’s Day), then added “10.4.24,” which just so happens to be the release date of “Joker: Folie à Deux,” his heavily anticipated sequel to 2019’s “Joker.”
But it wasn’t his caption that got everyone excited—it was getting another sneak peek at Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga as Arthur Fleck (the titular Joker!) and Harleen Quinzel (his on-again-off-again soulmate Harley Quinn).
The first photo, in color, almost apes a fashion spread, with Fleck looking down and away from the camera in a maroon colored jacket. He’s almost got a James Dean vibe, except Dean never wore clown face paint. Beside him, Lady Gaga, in a black or navy blouse with a floral print, is glancing off to the side with a little bit of a manic vibe. She is lit from behind and looks striking,...

Five years ago, Todd Phillips’ surprise hit movie Joker, which startled both reviewers and audiences, became a smash at the box office. Joaquin Phoenix’s portrayal of the grim version of DC Comics’s classic villain (Arthur Fleck / Joker) even brought him an Oscar. The long wait for a sequel will finally pay off later this year when Joker 2 opens in theaters on October 4, 2024. Will this be a traditional follow-up?
Rumors quickly spread that the follow-up might see a musical pivot after Lady Gaga joined the cast as Harley Quinn. Although not much is known about Joker: Folie à Deux, Lawrence Sher, the film’s cinematographer, has recently declared that it is “not a musical”.
Joaquin Phoenix as Joker
It appears that this decision was made to correct a major error before the film’s release in order to avoid the problems that have previously afflicted The Marvels.

Director Todd Phillips has taken to Instagram today to share a Joker: Folie à Deux Valentine’s Day treat: new romantic images of Harley Quinn and Joker.
The sequel brings Joker back to theaters on October 4, 2024.
Joaquin Phoenix is back in the Joker makeup, and he’ll be joined by Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn this round. Phillips captions the images of the pair in character on Instagram, “Hoping your day is full of love. 10.4.24.”
Still not much is known about the sequel to Phillips’ hit 2019 film, which amassed more than $1 billion at the global box office and earned 11 Academy Awards nominations, landing a Best Actor win for Phoenix and Best Original score for composer Hildur Guðnadóttir. The sequel is speculated to be a musical, and the romantic rooftop image below seems to support that.

Pj Harvey is a big Elvis Presley fan and meditates on his songs. She even created a fictional character inspired by Elvis’ “Love Me Tender.” In the same vein, she is a huge Bob Dylan fan and discussed her feelings about one of his more recent songs.
Pj Harvey said she could lose herself in Elvis Presley’s songs
During a 2022 interview with Rolling Stone, Harvey discussed her book-length poem Orlam. She was asked why the poem features a character named Wyman-Elvis who performs “Love Me Tender.”
“Well, I loved Elvis, as a lot of children of my era did, and I still love Elvis,” he said. “I love everything about him. I could lose myself in that voice, but not only that, the way he looked as well. He is almost a godlike figure in Orlam.“

Just weeks ago, Sir Elton John became the 19th entertainer to win the highly desirable Egot by claiming his first ever Emmy Award. And now, which person is the most likely to be the 20th Egot later this year, in 2025 or beyond? Here is a summary of the 80 people who have the best chance right now.
The most likely duo could be composers Benj Pasek and Justin Paul (actually meaning a 20th and 21st Egot if they win). They are producers and songwriters for the third season of “Only Murders in the Building,” so they will have a couple of opportunities in September at the Emmys. They first won an Oscar, Tony, and Grammy.
For the 2024 Grammys, nobody is nominated who could become an Egot, so the next possible chance would be 2025. There are a total of 25 people who have won everything needed except a Grammy. They are actress Ellen Burstyn,...

Two songs from “Barbie” are Oscar-nominated, part of a diverse collection of songs and musical scores nominated for the 96th annual Academy Awards.
“What Was I Made For?” by Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell, and “I’m Just Ken,” by Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt, were chosen by the 390 voting members of the Academy music branch. Three “Barbie” songs were shortlisted (Dua Lipa’s “Dance the Night” being the third) but only two can be nominated, per Academy rules.
The “Barbie” songs are already considered frontrunners, and if either number prevails on March 10, the Oscar will go to a pair of songwriters who already have one of those golden statues. Siblings Eilish and O’Connell won for 2021’s James Bond film “No Time to Die,” while Ronson and Wyatt were two of four 2018 winners for Lady Gaga’s song “Shallow” from “A Star Is Born.”

Last year “Women Talking” underperformed during the awards season apart from getting a Best Picture bid at the Critics Choice Awards and an ensemble cast nom from the SAG Awards. But in the end it still managed to make the Oscar lineup for Best Picture. This year something similar has been happening with “The Color Purple.” Can it also get nominated for Best Picture with only Critics Choice and SAG noms under its belt?
Before last year’s major precursors started rolling in, many thought “Women Talking” would be a strong awards contender for Best Director (Sarah Polley), Best Supporting Actress (Jessie Buckley and/or Claire Foy) and Best Score (Hildur Guðnadóttir). Yet despite scoring six Critics Choice nominations including Best Picture, the rest of its precursor run proved disappointing.
The movie only scored two Golden Globe noms for Best Film Screenplay and Best Score. It was completely ignored by BAFTA.

Searching for and listening to movie soundtrack music for the year is an active quest of curiosity, discovery, and collage. For those fatigued and pushing through the chilliest season, I hope this mix can provide both energy and warmth, as it did to me in making it.Trends in film music over the last decade are continuing strong in 2023, particularly in the ambition of independent auteurs using complex and unusual scoring. The foundation for this mix is Angela Schanelec's beautiful and aptly titled Music, which provides both diegetic and non-diegetic moments to guide us. Samples range from The Old Oak, in which classical choral choir meets Syrian guitar and words of hope that now hit harder than ever, to a mix of sentimental strings courtesy of the legendary Joe Hisaishi. Abstract experimental sounds by two completely different kinds of artists—Harmony Korine and Thomas Newman—are mixed with sliced...

What separates Loki from the rest of Marvel’s Disney+ series is its bold and inspired choices across every department, and chief among them is Natalie Holt’s genre-bending score.
The British composer brought the otherworldly sound of the theremin back to the fore, calling to mind the sci-fi and genre films of the ‘50s. She also created instant emotion through the nyckelharpa, a Nordic instrument that has both fiddle and harp qualities. The result of Holt’s efforts has led to one of Marvel’s most memorable scores, if not the most, as well as two Emmy nominations and two high-profile jobs as the composer of Obi-Wan Kenobi and Batgirl.
On Loki season two, Holt has doubled down on experimentation alongside her thereminist, Charlie Draper. She even cameoed as one of the band members who performed in the 1890s beer hall that director Kasra Farahani’s “1893” recreated. In between setups,...

Agatha Christie was the master of the perfectly constructed mystery; Oscar winner Hildur Guðnadóttir is an avant-garde cellist-composer. Yet the two meet to spine-tingling results for Kenneth Branagh’s third Hercule Poirot mystery, “A Haunting in Venice,” a loose adaptation of Christie’s “Hallowe’en Party.”
As it turns out, there’s a very good reason why Guðnadóttir might find pleasure in Christie’s work. “My grandmother, who was one of the first women doctors in Iceland and a brilliant virologist, always said that the only way to get a tiny break from your mind is to read a good detective novel or crime story,” Guðnadóttir told IndieWire.
“So, since I was very young, I have lived by this advice,” Guðnadóttir said. “And I have always wanted to sink my teeth into an Agatha Christie adaptation. When Ken approached me about this one, he was really clear from the get-go...

Hercule Poirot is returning on a new case this week with A Haunting in Venice. The seasoned detective is once again portrayed by Kenneth Branaugh after his previous entries, Murder on the Orient Express and Death on the Nile. This time around, things get scary as Poirot is investigating supernatural happenings in a Venetian villa. The spooky installment opened with Thursday previews that grossed $1.2 million and is on track to earn roughly $15 million over the weekend.
Variety reports that the composer on the film, Hildur Guðnadóttir, who is a big fan of Agatha Christie, wanted to achieve something darker than Branagh previously had with the other films. She explains, “I took a classical romanticism melodic approach because the way you express melody says so much about how you’re expressing yourself. Post-war composers were drawn to tonal expression or lots of experimentation where they used extended techniques and looked at...

The third film in Kenneth Branagh’s re-imagined Hercule Poirot series, A Haunting in Venice, earned $1.2M at Thursday Preview screenings. The spooktacular adaptation of Agatha Christie‘s Hallowe’en novel could perform similarly to other chapters of Branagh’s Poirot films, with a weekend gross of roughly $15M.
While the numbers barely move the needle compared to 2023’s other box office barn burners, it’s worth noting that A Haunting in Venice is Branagh’s best-reviewed Poirot film with a 77% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Poirot’s latest case might not pack the star power of 2017’s Murder on the Orient Express or 2022’s Death on the Nile. Still, it includes Oscar-winner Michelle Yeoh and multi-talented funny gal Tina Fey. If A Haunting in Venice plays its tarot cards right, it could send The Nun II to the back of the pews after a 60%+ dip in attendance.

Hildur Guðnadóttir grew up on Agatha Christie mysteries. “I totally lived for those novels,” the composer says. Ever since then, she has wanted to sink her teeth into story by the famous author. So when director Kenneth Branagh approached her, she said yes. “He wanted to do something darker and almost horror, and that dark stuff was tempting for me.”
Dark moods are a signature theme for Guðnadóttir. The Oscar-winning composer’s work includes “Joker,” “Sicario: Day of the Soldado,” “Tár” and she will be back for “Joker: Folie à Deux.”
The film is based on Christie’s 1969 novel “Halloween Party,” and stars Tina Fey, Jude Hill, Kelly Reilly and Jamie Dornan, with Branagh reprising his role as Hercule Poirot from “Death on the Nile” and “Murder on the Orient Express.” Set in an eerie Venetian villa with a ghostly past, it revolves around a séance Poirot reluctantly attends on All Hallows’ Eve.

One of my favorite aspects of Kenneth Branagh’s latest, A Haunting in Venice, is the terrific score. As impressive as Branagh’s acting and directing skills, the atmospheric score gives the story a beating heart. And you can credit that to the brilliant composer Hildur Guðnadóttir. Responsible for the gorgeous sounds of Women Talking, Tar, and the mini-series Chernobyl, she is a wonderfully talented musician and artist. Not only can you hear this in her inspired score for A Haunting in Venice, but you can also add her excellent work in Joker.
I recently had the joy of speaking to Hildur about her latest. She opened up about working with Kenneth Branagh and the music of the time period in which the film takes place. Next up, I asked her about connecting the score to characters like Joker and Hercule Poirot. She discussed creating the iconic shot from Joker...

Oscar, Grammy, and Emmy Award winner Hildur Gudnadottir has kept awfully busy since winning Best Score at the 2020 Academy Awards for “Joker.” The composer had a pair of acclaimed scores in contention during the 2022 awards race with “Tar” and “Women Talking” and is back again this week with the music for Kenneth Branagh’s “A Haunting in Venice.” But Gudnadottir’s most anticipated work is coming next year: the score for “Joker: Folie a Deux,” the sequel to 2019’s “Joker” that director and writer Todd Phillips has fashioned as a musical.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter about the upcoming film and its expectations after $1 billion in global ticket sales and 11 Oscar nominations including wins for Gudnadottir and star Joaquin Phoenix, the composer said she’s been too busy to really worry about the outside world’s expectations.

In just five years, A Haunting in Venice’s Hildur Gudnadóttir has become one of the industry’s most in-demand composers.
In 2018, the Icelandic musician and classically trained cellist scored her first American film, Stefano Sollima’s Sicario: Day of the Soldado, and now, she’s a Tony award away from Egot (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony) status thanks to Joker (2019) and Chernobyl (2019). Gudnadóttir’s evocative strings and wind instruments return to theaters this Friday in Kenneth Branagh’s third Hercule Poirot film, A Haunting in Venice.
Like Branagh, Gudnadóttir grew up in a household that adored Agatha Christie’s crime fiction, and so she jumped at the chance to compose music for the Oscar-winning filmmaker’s latest murder mystery. Based on Christie’s Hallowe’en Party and adapted by Michael Green, Venice picks up in 1947, post-World War II, as a retired Poirot attends a séance that quickly goes awry.
