There have been many attempts to adapt Alexandre Dumas’ beloved swash-buckling story to the big screen. From Disney’s The Three Musketeers to Paul W.S. Anderson’s The Three Musketeers to the D’Artagnan solo story, The Musketeer, Alexandre Dumas’ tale has been told again and again. However, Samuel-Goldwyn Films and Pathé are attempting to tell the story with a faithful adaptation that will take two movies to convey. The new trailer for the French historical epic, The Three Musketeers: Part I – D’Artagnan, has now been unveiled.
The official synopsis from Samuel-Goldwyn Films and Pathé reads,
“In the first entry, D’Artagnan, a spirited young Gascon, is left for dead after trying to save a young woman from being kidnapped. When he arrives in Paris, he tries to find his attackers. He is unaware that his quest will lead him to the heart of a real war where the future of France is at stake.

Nearly four months after our first teaser of Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, which promised a nigh Kubrickian epic in a shade of pink, Warner Bros. has at last dropped a full trailer for the movie. And while it just stops short of putting Aqua’s classic “Barbie Girl” over the proceedings, the first real look at Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling in the new film confirms they are definitely living in a Barbie World.
And they’re inviting you to go party.
What’s intriguing about the trailer, still appropriately scored to the sounds of the Beach Boys’ “Fun, Fun, Fun,” is that other than revealing most of the cast is playing variations on the Barbie and Ken archetypes—literally modeled after actual toys Mattel has sold over the years under the Barbie umbrella—we still don’t know a whole lot about the film’s story. It’s set...

We’ve all looked at skyscrapers thrusting tall and proud into the unsuspecting sky and snorted to think of what was subconsciously driving the (inevitably male) architects. Right? Of course we have. Yet I cannot think of a single film before this one that takes our presumptions and seems to say, “Yes, heh heh, yesssss,” with a glint in its eye. I mean, sure, Kate Winslet’s snide aside in Titanic to White Star exec Bruce Ismay about Freud’s “ideas about the male preoccupation with size” is one thing. Eiffel is something else entirely. Also what it does is almost surely subconscious, too, which is sort of perfect. *snort*
This French romantic drama posits that engineer Gustave Eiffel had no interest in his company — which had just delivered the Statue of Liberty to New York City as a gift to America — building a massive tower for the 1889 World’s Fair in Paris.

The tousle-haired star could be regarded as the quintessential Parisian actor – and now he’s taking on the city icon that looms largest
If Michael Caine is the quintessential London actor, Romain Duris could become his Paris equivalent. Born and raised in the city, he rose to international fame in 2005 playing the real-estate hustler with ambitions to be a pianist in Jacques Audiard’s The Beat That My Heart Skipped. Quick to the punch but nifty in his fingerwork, dropping rats in a sack on unwanted tenants while wearing Cuban heels, he was Parisian squalor and glamour in one snake-hipped paradox. Then he cashed in his tousle-haired bourgeois-bohème cachet in Christopher Honoré’s Dans Paris and Cédric Klapisch’s Paris. And now the pinnacle: he is starring in a new biopic about engineer Gustave Eiffel.
Duris couldn’t resist the man’s ubiquity. “I don’t know if it’s because I’m Parisian,...

Romain Duris brings authority to this fanciful version of history, which has Gustave Eiffel erecting the monument as a Taj Mahal for his lost love
Some towering absurdity and vertiginous silliness here … and also a bit of innocent enjoyment. Eiffel is a handsomely produced period drama, a madly Lloyd-Webber-ised romantic fantasy about the construction of the Eiffel tower in 1889 in Paris for the 100th anniversary of the revolution. Screenwriter Caroline Bongrand imagines (which is to say: she entirely invents) a backstory for the great engineer Gustave Eiffel, a grand passion that inspired him to build the tower as his own private Taj Mahal for a lost, secret love.
Eiffel is played with authority and gusto – as well as various frock coats, top hats and lengths of beard – by Romain Duris. In real life he was a widower with five children when he embarked on the tower, but this drama declares...

Architect and structural engineer Gustave Eiffel built not only Paris’ iconic Eiffel Tower, but designed the interior structure that ensured that our iconic Statue of Liberty would stand up and continue to stand for the long term. These are among the historical tidbits you will learn in Eiffel, a lush French historical romance/drama built around real events in Eiffel’s life.
Eiffel is a beautiful period film with polished production values, an attractive cast, and an appealing premise. Since the Eiffel Tower just celebrated its 130 anniversary in December, one might assume Eiffel is a biopic. It is, partly, but mostly it is a romance set against the backdrop of the building of the Eiffel Tower. The film is loosely based on Eiffel’s true story and centers mostly on the period of Eiffel...
