[Warning: The following contains Major spoilers for The Good Doctor series finale.] Freddie Highmore‘s Dr. Shaun Murphy will always be out there somewhere helping people heal. That was the main message The Good Doctor creators wanted to deliver in the May 21 series finale, and they did that through a time jump that revealed how Shaun and Dr. Claire Browne’s (Antonia Thomas) careers evolved after the events of the finale — and what memorable events they were. Shaun was determined to craft a miraculous solution to Dr. Aaron Glassman (Richard Schiff) and Claire’s cancer cases, but Glassman refused treatment. Rather than spend his final months undergoing potentially painful medical procedures, Glassman chose to make the most of the six months he had left. Since he was leaving his job because of his prognosis, Glassman performed Shaun and Charlie’s (Kayla Cromer) non-Fda approved experimental treatment on Claire. Glassman no doubt lost his medical license because of this,...

After seven seasons, “The Good Doctor” came to a heart-rending conclusion, emotionally devastating the dedicated fans who signed on to say so long to Dr. Shaun Murphy and the rest of the cast and crew who populated San Jose St. Bonaventure Hospital.
Variety talked with series star Freddie Highmore (Dr. Shaun Murphy) about saying farewell to the creators and actors he’s shared laborious science monologues and anxiety-inducing surgical scenes with for seven years.
What was the very last scene that you shot as Dr. Shaun Murphy?
The last scene that I filmed was the one where, ultimately, Leah sits down next to Shaun and then talks him into going to becoming aware, I guess, of the situation facing both Claire and Dr. Glassman. That motivates him in the short term to go and speak to Claire [Antonia Thomas] and then come to terms with the fact that Glassman will...

[Warning: The following contains Major spoilers for The Good Doctor series finale, “Goodbye.”] The Good Doctor has come to a poignant end. The series finale saw Dr. Shaun Murphy (Freddie Highmore) taking on the most personal medical cases of his career as he fought to save his best friend, Dr. Claire Browne (Antonia Thomas), and his father, Dr. Aaron Glassman (Richard Schiff), both of whom had cancer. Glassman chose not to treat his terminal glioblastoma, opting instead to spend his final six months enjoying every second of time he had left. That came with stepping down from his position as co-president of St. Bonaventure Hospital. Shaun refused to accept Glassman’s decision and gathered all the doctors to form a treatment plan for him and Claire, who was experiencing life-threatening complications from her breast cancer. Shaun struggled to acknowledge the real possibility that both Glassman and Claire could die, so he spent much of the episode fighting...

ABC’s The Good Doctor ended its seven-season run tonight with Part 2 of its two-hour finale which, like many episodes of the medical drama, mixed tragedy and triumph to close out Shaun Murphy’s journey on a hopeful note.
The closer dealt with the aftermath of the two shocking Part 1 cliffhangers: Glassman (Richard Schiff) telling Shaun (Freddie Highmore) that his cancer had returned and it was terminal, and Claire (Antonia Thomas) collapsing in Kalu’s arms. They set Shaun on a race to help two of the most important people in his life who are both in grave danger.

When co-showrunners David Shore and Liz Friedman learned The Good Doctor would end with its current and seventh season, they “laid down on the floor and contemplated that for its truth, then pretty quickly had an idea of where we wanted to go with that final season,” Friedman reveals, before adding, “but this is definitely bittersweet… I could have continued to tell stories for Shaun [Murphy], and Freddie [Highmore] forever.” In the penultimate episode, there was plenty of sweetness for the show’s doctors: There was a wonderful impromptu 2 a.m. wedding for Morgan (Fiona Gubelmann) and Park (Will Yun Lee); the return of original character Claire (Antonia Thomas) and her romantic reunion with Kalu (Chuku Modu); and Shaun, with the help of his wife Lea (Paige Spara) explaining to young addict Hannah how Dr. Glassman (Richard Schiff) can help her the way he helped Shaun, his “nonbiological son.” Finally, there was Glassman quietly telling Shaun,...

[Warning: The following contains Major spoilers for The Good Doctor Season 7 Episode 9, “Unconditional.”] The penultimate episode of The Good Doctor just staged not one, but two massive cliffhangers in its final moments. TV Insider caught up with showrunners David Shore and Liz Friedman to discuss what this means for The Good Doctor series finale, which airs Tuesday, May 21 at 10/9c on ABC. Dr. Claire Browne (Antonia Thomas) returned in The Good Doctor Season 7 Episode 9. She came back to San Jose St. Bonaventure Hospital from her practice in Guatemala for treatment on a lump in her breast, which scans at her practice said were benign. Tests at St. Bonaventure confirmed the original diagnosis was wrong. Claire did, in fact, have breast cancer. A treatment plan was immediately set in place, and while the first surgery didn’t get clear margins when removing the mass, a second procedure seemed to have done the trick. The end of the TV season is always heartbreaking.
Not only do our favorites wrap up for the season, but some shows end forever. And the 2024 season is one of the worst ever.
There are at least seven series ending that we don't want to say goodbye to, but the finales are coming up fast.
The 2024 season was more heartbreaking than most. The season was truncated because of the WGA writers' and Sga-aftra actors' strikes.
Many beloved shows had short seasons of 10-13 episodes, and some with even fewer new shows. There have been long hiatuses that seemed to begin almost as soon as shows finally started airing. Worst of all, many series cancelations were announced just as shows began airing.
There was a bloodbath over at many networks, but CBS had the highest number of casualties, with five of the seven shows we're most heartbroken about leaving that network.

We knew it was coming, but it didn’t make it any less difficult.
The Good Doctor Season 7, Episode 6, found the St. Bonaventure staff reacting to and processing Dr. Asher Wolke’s (Noah Galvin) death.
As Monsters and Critics previously reported, Asher was brutally killed off in an antisemitic, anti-lgbtq+ attack while confronting a group of people destroying a synagogue.
The cliffhanger left Asher out cold, and Tuesday’s new episode picked up with the beloved character’s funeral.
In one of the series’ most heartbreaking moments, Asher’s friend Jordan (Bria Samone Henderson) gave the eulogy and opened up about how they became friends despite coming from very different worlds.
“I’m a devout Christian from Oakland, and he was an orthodox Jew-turned-atheist from Brooklyn,” she began.
Asher’s closest friend delivered a heartbreaking eulogy
“But when we met at St. Bons, he became my closest friend.”

The Good Doctor cast is scrubbing out for good.
As Monsters and Critics previously reported, The Good Doctor is ending after a truncated seventh season of just 10 episodes.
Details are scarce about what’s on tap for the last five episodes, but we know they’ll pick up in the immediate aftermath of Asher Wolke’s murder.
However, many of the show’s cast members took to social media over the weekend to reveal that filming of the medical drama was wrapping up.
Given that we have just a handful of episodes left, we knew it was coming, but it doesn’t make it any less difficult.
The Good Doctor has had many questionable plots throughout its time on the air, but fans still tune in to watch the hit drama.

The Good Doctor centered around autism in a way no other series had.
Love it or hate it, there's no denying it made a strong impact. For the past seven years, viewers have gotten to know Shaun as he struggled professionally and personally, which changed how autistic characters are portrayed.
As The Good Doctor Season 7 heads toward its conclusion, let's look at the influence this series has had on autistic representation.
There have been other shows that featured autistic characters, but they often focused on the effect a family member's autism had on the rest of the family, especially the adults.
Parenthood was especially guilty of this, making Max's autism all about how difficult it was for the Bravermans to have an autistic child.
Netflix's Atypical did a slightly better job, making Sam a full-fledged, three-dimensional character. Still, a lot of airtime was given to his sister's resentment over...

The revolving door at The Good Doctor continues to spin in its final season.
Original star Antonia Thomas has closed a deal to return as Dr. Claire Brown.
The deal is for two episodes, including the hit medical drama’s series finale.
Thomas was an original star but left as a series regular following The Good Doctor Season 4 and has returned for guest spots since.
It’s always nice when former stars return to give long-running shows a sendoff, and The Good Doctor hasn’t been the same since Thomas’ big exit.
Sadly, the once-hot series quickly lost too many cast members, and the show struggled to bounce back creatively.
It’s probably a big reason viewers started tuning out, which triggered ABC’s decision to cancel the show with its seventh season.

Original The Good Doctor cast member Chuku Modu is once again a series regular on the ABC medical drama, playing Dr. Jared Kalu.
Modu, who originally returned midway through last season as a recurring, has been promoted to regular for the upcoming seventh season, now in production.
Modu’s surgical resident Dr. Jared Kalu was a breakout character in Season 1. He got into trouble for punching a doctor who had sexually harassed his girlfriend, resident Claire Browne (Antonia Thomas) and ultimately headed to Colorado for a surgeon job.
Kalu eventually left that job to become a concierge doctor, which is how he ended up back at San Jose’s St. Bonaventure Hospital. He ended up sticking around his old stumping grounds.

Some TV shows are built to last, but The Good Doctor is not one of them.
The ABC medical drama kicked off in 2017 and delivered compelling cases. That's the bare minimum required for a medical drama nowadays, but the biggest problem for the series has been its inability to keep its cast.
Long-running shows tend to lose cast members as the years go on, but The Good Doctor has never really been able to bounce back from losses in the early seasons.
One of the most shocking -- and horrifically written -- exits involved Nicholas Gonzalez's hunky Dr. Neil Melendez succumbing to injuries he sustained in an earthquake.
It was very Grey's Anatomy, but unlike that show, The Good Doctor has struggled to find replacements for prominent characters who stand the test of time.
Killing Melendez was one of the most controversial deaths on TV in recent memory because...

Not sleeping in the is a big problem for many people but if they had a best friend who is also up with them, could it be really fun. The new Apple TV+ series Still Up answers that question through a sweet story about two friends Lisa and Danny suffering from insomnia, who are connected mostly through video calls.
Created by Steve Burge and Natalie Walter, Still Up has a small cast and it does a good job of focusing on the important storylines through them while also establishing their eccentricities and wants in the story seamlessly. We never feel that any of the characters in the series are out of place or forced in the story.

Would you mind falling in love with a person you connect with instantly and talk to for hours over regular late-night video calls? The slow spark between Danny and Lisa builds up at the very beginning of the series Still Up without their realizing it. The romantic comedy thrives on the worlds of the two friends who are insomniacs, catching up with each other on routine late-night video calls. Created by Steve Burge and Natalie Walter, the handling of the major characters has been left to the deft hands of Craig Roberts and Antonia Thomas. The comic-buildup on romance is sudden and unexpected at the end of the episode when the characters match on the dating app, before which everything seemed to be a platonic conversation between the two friends.
Spoiler Alert
The bond between Danny and Lisa grows at a slow pace. But it’s sure to take greater turns in the future.
