In addition to Inner Workings, Matsuda also directed the short PreKissToric Times. He spent years working for Disney, where he worked as a story artist on such huge studio hits as Zootopia, Big Hero 6 and Wreck-It Ralph. He received an Annie Award nomination for storyboarding in an animated feature for his work on Wreck-It Ralph.

Disney’s whimsical animated short, “Inner Workings” (playing in front of “Moana”), works like a quirkier “Inside Out” — a tug of war between logic and passion. It marks yet another innovative blend of CG and 2D, following the Oscar-winning “Feast” and “Paperman.” (Watch the exclusive clip below.)
Director Leo Matsuda takes us inside the cartoony body of a hapless clerk named Paul, whose brain nearly squashes his heart because of a neurotic fear of death.

“I’m a Japanese Brazilian, so I’m very disciplined, but I also like to party,” Matsuda told IndieWire.
At first, Matsuda toyed with the idea of using Disney’s Meander drawing program (introduced on “Paperman,” and the recipient of an Academy Sci-Tech award this year), but realized the paper texture look wasn’t appropriate. So he decided on CG...

Disney and Pixar Animation have premiered our first look at Inner Workings – and not a moment too soon.
Set to screen before Ron Clements and John Musker’s Moana from tomorrow, November 23, the quirky short delves deep into an internal struggle – quite literally – where the heart, brain and lungs of an Average Joe tussle with one another in a bid to exert control on his life.
Hatched by Leo Matsuda (Big Hero 6, Wreck-It Ralph), Inner Workings is like a more physical spin on Inside Out, instead introducing viewers to the anthropomorphic versions of our vital organs, rather than the living incarnations of Joy, Sadness, Fear, Anger and Disgust. Even after such a teasing trailer, Matsuda’s passion project piques our curiosity with its whimsical set-up, and should act as the near-perfect appetizer for the maritime adventure that awaits in Moana.

Disney has released a trailer for their new animated short called "Inner Workings." The short is attached to their upcoming feature film Moana. It was directed by first-time director Leo Matsuda, who was a story artist for Big Hero 6 and Wreck-It Ralph, and it looks like a really fun and amusing story.
Inner Workings tells the story of "the internal struggle between a man’s pragmatic, logical side and his free-spirited, adventurous half." Basically, it turns the various internal organs of a person into characters. It was created be a small team of animators, and it's described as a unique, fast-paced style "that blends CG and traditional hand-drawn animation, the short explores the importance of finding balance in daily life."
"Inner Workings" opens in theaters on December 2nd in front of Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Moana.

Disney has revealed a short trailer for their latest animated short film, Inner Workings, which is playing in front of Moana - the Disney Animation musical in theaters this week. This film is the directorial debut of a story artist at Disney named Leo Matsuda, and it's an amusing and thoughtful look at life. Similar to Pixar's Inside Out, it turns various internal organs into characters that control a person. The short also plays with this wonderful idea that there's more to life than doing the same mundane work as everyone else, and that we need to let loose and trust our heart. This is one of the better shorts that Disney has made recently. Moana is worth seeing anyway, so head to your local theater and watch two great films for the price of one. Here's the official trailer for Leonardo Matsuda's short film Inner Workings, direct from...

This year the Academy’s Short Films and Feature Animation branch has deemed eligible a record 70 animated shorts to vie for the shortlist of ten, followed by the final five nominations for the Oscar. That’s 10 more than last year’s 60.
The number of qualified shorts has been growing steadily, from 33 in 2010 to 58 in 2014.
Members of the branch who volunteer to serve will now view the shorts and rate the films. The ten best-rated shorts will go on the shortlist, to be revealed in November. A larger group will check those out and cull the final five which will be announced on Tuesday, January 24. The shorts will be sent to the entire Academy, who will vote on the winner.
Cartoon Brew got hold of the list of qualified contenders, and assesses what they consider to be the best of the best, including trailers. The Academy has not released that list.

Like Pixar, Disney continues pushing the envelope with its shorts program, and “Inner Workings” offers yet another innovation in hybrid animation and quirky narrative.
Director Leo Matsuda (story artist on the Oscar-winning “Big Hero 6” and “Wreck-It Ralph”) takes us inside the cartoony body of a hapless clerk named Paul, whose brain and heart engage in a tug-of-war that nearly tears him apart.
But unlike Pixar’s Oscar-winning “Inside Out,” the intent is purely physical, not cerebral. “I’m a Japanese Brazilian so I’m very disciplined, but I also like to party,” said Matsuda, who was inspired by the human anatomy illustrations from the “Encyclopedia Britannica” that he flipped through as a youth.
Matsuda recreated the graphical look of those layered acetate transparencies in his short along with an ’80s vibe that’s pushed and theatrical. His influences were Jacques Tati, Wes Anderson, Disney’s Ward Kimball and Bruno Bozzetto,...
