Paramount musical Mean Girls launches in 647 cinemas at this weekend’s UK-Ireland box office, as it aims to end the six-week run of Wonka atop the chart.
From first-time feature directors Samantha Jayne and Arturo Perez Jr., Mean Girls is based on the Broadway musical of the same name; which in turn was based on Mark Waters’ 2004 comedy; itself based on Rosalind Wiseman’s 2002 book Queen Bees and Wannabes.

Account of the German film-maker’s singular career takes in numerous starry admirers but also is a portrait of an existential disruptor
With pop-culture brand recognition like no other auteur, he walks the walk and talks the talk … in that inimitable voice. Werner Herzog – film-maker, visionary, adventurer and first among equals of the New German cinema – is now the subject of a highly enjoyable new documentary from Thomas von Steinaecker, who has assembled an A-list gallery of interviewees to talk about knowing or working with the great man; these include Wim Wenders, Volker Schlöndorff, Nicole Kidman, Chloé Zhao, Joshua Oppenheimer, Robert Pattinson and many more.
The release of this film happens to coincide with Herzog’s autobiography Every Man for Himself and God Against All (which is also the original German title of his film The Enigma of Kasper Hauser) and I was a little disappointed that Radical Dreamer does...

Werner Herzog has an interesting face, notes Christian Bale in Thomas von Steinaecker’s new documentary. He goes on to observe that one could just point a camera at that face and have people come away thinking they’d seen something deep. Herzog is enough of a presence in the film, as an interviewee, to bear this out, so it is to von Steinaecker’s credit that he goes beyond this and delivers something which will give the Bavarian filmmaker’s fans real food for thought.
There is a vast amount of material which might be considered here. The films. The wild history of how some of them were made. The personal life of one of cinema’s most extraordinary creative talents. One can, however, find much of that documented elsewhere, in one form of another. Von Steinaecker’s interest is in capturing the spirit of it all, and it...

Werner Herzog - Radical Dreamer
Thomas von Steinaecker discovered the work of Werner Herzog very early in life, he tells me, when he was in his teens, and he has never looked back. As a filmmaker he has a strong record of his own, in documentary and, particularly, in a sort of cinematic portraiture, which is the approach he uses in his latest work, Werner Herzog – Radical Dreamer. It’s a style well suited to exploring the work of a creative artist who is anything but conventional and whose work cannot easily be slotted into a standard documentary frame. Thomas’ film is more interested in character, inspiration and theme than in providing a potted history of the great director’s work, and as such it’s a perfect complement to that work, which fans won’t want to miss.

Thomas von Steinaecker first reached out to Werner Herzog in 2020 about making a documentary surveying the prolific director’s career. Von Steinaecker’s peers told him that he would never hear back from Herzog. Afterall Herzog had never met von Steinaecker. That was two years ago. In that time, von Steinaecker completed “Werner Herzog: Radical Dreamer.” The 103-minute feature documentary chronicles not just Herzog’s 60-year career, but also explores what makes Herzog tick as a filmmaker and as a human being.
German-born von Steinaecker discovered Herzog in his early teens when he turned on the television and watched “Aguirre, the Wrath of God.” From that moment on, von Steinaecker was “fascinated” with the director.
“Everything about was shockingly different and strange,” he says. “The music, Klaus Kinski, the story and, last but not least, the documentary-style camera. The fact that such a film had been made in – from a...

Werner Herzog’s career entered a renaissance when most directors his age slow down. After 2005’s “Grizzly Man” turned his distinctive Bavarian accent into a pop culture phenomenon, the director previously best known for German New Wave entries “Fitzcarraldo” and “Aguirre, Wrath of God” was suddenly both fodder for internet memes galore and a Hollywood actor playing villains in “The Mandalorian” and “Jack Reacher” (not to mention his voicework on multiple episodes of “The Simpsons”). Yet none of these strange twists got in the way of his main career as a filmmaker. “I’m plowing ahead,” he said in a conversation with IndieWire over Zoom this month.
Herzog turns 80 on September 5, when he’ll be attending the Telluride Film Festival, where one of the main venues bears his name. He assumed some kind of celebration was in the works. “I have no clue what to expect there,” he said, “but I’ll face it.

For the second year running, Sheffield DocFest’s flagship pitching forum MeetMarket is taking place virtually. That’s not holding back the number of projects applying: MeetMarket has had more than 550 applications this year. From these, MeetMarket has selected 55 projects, which will have the chance to present to more than 300 international funders, broadcasters, distributors, festival programmers and exhibitors.
They will be seeking to follow in the footsteps of high-profile documentaries that have previously come through MeetMarket while looking for funding or partners, including Malik Bendjelloul’s “Searching for Sugarman,” Joshua Oppenheimer’s “The Act of Killing” and Nanfu Wang’s “One Child Nation.”
Sheffield DocFest head of industry Patrick Hurley says there were concerns about the number and nature of projects that might apply this year, given the background of the pandemic. Would the wheels still be turning on projects preparing to pitch? Would they qualitatively be different because of travel bans and restrictions?...
