Jeremy Renner has been involved in many kinds of projects in his career. While he is best known for his work in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Hawkeye, he also dabbled in the beloved world of the Bourne franchise. In 2012, the actor took part in a reboot of Matt Damon’s beloved series, which came to be known as Bourne Legacy. Playing the role of Aaron Cross, the film got a lot of positive reviews from fans and went beyond their expectations.

Hawkeye star Jeremy Renner is game and ready to reprise his role as Aaron Cross in The Bourne Legacy sequel if it ever gets the green light. The movie was notoriously known for underperforming at the box office, and it also did not help that reviews from fans and critics were less-than-stellar.

Yes, it is true. Edward Berger, the director of All Quiet on the Western Front & Jack, is in talks to direct a new flick about super spy Jason Bourne. The upcoming film would be the latest entry in the successful Bourne franchise, which has brought in over $1.6 billion at the box office through five films (four of which starred Matt Damon). Jeremy Renner played Aaron Cross in the fourth Bourne film, which brought in $276 million despite receiving mixed reviews.
Many fans were therefore left to speculate as to whether the Mystic Pizza star would return to Universal Pictures’ acclaimed action franchise. During his recent visit to The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Damon, 53, declined to confirm his presence in the next Bourne flick when the host brought up the topic. However, the actor did sense that “someone is going to need to take it over” eventually.

Everyone loves a good what-if, right? Let’s go back down memory lane for a second. Once upon a time, Matt Damon and director Paul Greengrass abandoned the ‘Jason Bourne,’ franchise after being unable to nail a 4th ‘Jason Bourne’ script (they tried). In the gap, original ‘Bourne’ writer Tony Gilroy was asked to pitch a take, and that eventually became “The Bourne Legacy” (2012), which he directed starring Jeremy Renner as Aaron Cross, another Treadstone-like agent out there in the greater ‘Jason Bourne’ universe.

Universal is in early development on a new movie about super spy Jason Bourne, with “All Quiet on the Western Front” filmmaker Edward Berger in talks to direct.
The new movie would be the latest installment in the blockbuster franchise, which has tallied five films (four of which starred Matt Damon) and more than $1.6 billion at the box office.
Sources familiar with the project have stressed that it’s still in early development, so any grand return to the world of Jason Borne may be far into the future. There’s currently no script in the works, nor is there a writer attached to the prospective film, so it’s unclear if the plan is to bring back original cast members or entirely reboot the property. So, it’s too soon to say if cast members like Damon — who first played the role of the amnesiac assassin in 2002’s “The Bourne Identity...

The Jason Bourne franchise has been a reliable source of high-tech action and espionage for nearly two decades. Matt Damon’s Bourne has become a symbol of no-nonsense action, with the films setting themselves apart from the crowd with real stunt work, staying away from big CGI set pieces and generally keeping both feet firmly planted on the ground when it comes to realism. Since The Bourne Identity hit cinemas back in 2002, the franchise has grossed over $1.6 billion for Universal, but now it seems they’re preparing to hit the reset button and take the series back to basics.
We last saw the character in 2016’s Jason Bourne, though after that Damon said that could be his final appearance in the franchise as audiences “might be done” with the hero. Universal seem to agree, too, as our sources have told us that they’re currently searching for a new actor for a planned reboot.

When an actor can't return for a sequel, sometimes the filmmakers get creative...
This article comes from Den of Geek UK.
Sometimes, things don't go to plan. A movie has hit big, or a franchise is rumbling on, and you want one of the original stars back for the next in the series. The problem? You either knocked them off in the last film, or the actor concerned isn't available, or they just didn't want to return. That, or you didn't want them, but you're too polite to say.
The solution? The photo! Have characters looking mournfully at an image of said actor, just to remind you that they were once part of that particular parish, and so everyone else can acknowledge them, and then get on with it. At least, that's usually how it works.
Here are a few choice examples. As always, help yourself in the comments.

USA Network has ordered the drama “Treadstone” straight to series, Variety has learned.
The series, which was originally ordered to pilot back in April, centers on the fictional CIA black ops program Operation Treadstone, which was the program that created superspy Jason Bourne. The covert program uses behavior modification protocol to turn recruits into nearly superhuman assassins. The first season follows sleeper agents across the globe as they’re mysteriously “awakened” to resume their deadly missions. The series will go into production in 2019.
“As the #1 cable entertainment network for the past 12 years, USA Network is delivering a dynamic lineup of big, bold programming – and what could be bigger and bolder than the Treadstone mythology?” said Chris McCumber, president of entertainment networks for NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment.
“Treadstone” is produced by Universal Cable Productions. The series is written and executive produced by Tim Kring. Ramin Bahrani will direct the pilot and also serve as an executive producer.

Jeremy Renner holds the door open for The Bourne Legacy 2...
The Bourne Legacy is pretty conclusively the weak link of the Bourne saga boxset. This was the one that starred Jeremy Renner as Aaron Cross, in an attempt to make the series less reliant on Matt Damon. The Bourne Legacy did okay business in the end, but it cost a fair amount of marketing coin to get that far, and it wasn’t a well received film. Still, Universal – at least until Matt Damon agreed to return to the series – was developing The Bourne Legacy 2.
Jeremy Renner, for one, is keen that the project is revived in some form too. “The willingness on my part is there”, he confirmed in a chat with Collider.

Four years have passed since Justin Lin (Fast & Furious) first came into contention to direct Jeremy Renner in the Bourne Legacy sequel, and in that time, development on the proposed follow-up has barely moved an inch.
Universal’s spinoff launched into theaters in 2012 as a means of expanding the Bourne franchise beyond Paul Greengrass and Matt Damon’s acclaimed trilogy – incidentally, that creative duo returned for back-to-basics sequel Jason Bourne just last year – though lukewarm reviews and a mediocre box office return meant that the studio quickly cooled talks of a direct continuation.
It’s remained on the backburner ever since, and while appearing at the Television Critics Association summer press tour to promote S.W.A.T, Justin Lin told IGN that despite all of the potential lurking beneath the hood, that Bourne Legacy sequel has essentially been placed on ice over at Universal. Last Week’S Review: ‘Sing Me A Song’ Shows Carl the Joys of Dictatorship
Whose Episode Is It?
It’s the midseason finale, so everyone’s accounted for, even Carol and Morgan. “Hearts Still Beating” is yet another 90-minute episode, and even with so many characters to feature, it’s still a drag. It’s at least better than last week’s “Sing Me A Song,” but that’s damning with faint praise. The main idea is that Rick finally realizes that the Saviors need to be resisted, and the best way to do that is to unite all the Saviors’ enemies (and not have five different “lone gunman” assassination plots). The problem is that the audience knew that’s what needed to happen after, say, Episode 2 of Season 7, but we’ve had to sit around as the communities were all introduced and the Saviors repeatedly proved that yes,...

Jason Bourne wasn't my favorite film in the Bourne franchise. In fact, I thought it was the worst one out of the three previous movies. It made a solid amount of money at the box office, though, as it pulled in over $415 million worldwide. With that kind of money and the way that the movie ended, I wouldn't be surprised if we got another sequel.

Whilst plans for The Bourne Legacy 2 seem dead, it's looking likely that Matt Damon and Paul Greengrass are up for another Bourne film.
Poor Jeremy Renner. Already, his schedule is throwing into doubt a deep involvement in Mission: Impossible 6, due to his commitments to filming Avengers: Infinity War. Now, though, it looks like a return to play Aaron Cross, the character he debuted in The Bourne Legacy, is further away than ever.
That’s because Universal looks like it’s planning, now it’s got them both back interested again, to keep faith with the core team of Matt Damon and director Paul Greengrass for its Bourne franchise. They reteamed to make Jason Bourne a success over the summer, and producer Frank Marshall has confirmed that the intention is to pursue a further Bourne venture with the pair of them.
“I have spoken to them both”, Marshall told Yahoo.

When Jason Bourne came out over the summer and did some respectable box office numbers, it naturally got people asking: Will Matt Damon and Paul Greengrass continue to make more Bourne movies? After all, they had basically sworn off making anymore after The Bourne Ultimatum came out in 2007. Then we exclusively reported in in 2014 that the duo had reconsidered and would, indeed, come back for another go-around.
So now that the fourth Jason Bourne movie has come and gone, where does that leave us? Will Jeremy Renner's The Bourne Legacy films continue? Is Damon, who also works as a producer on the series, working on another proper installment? During a Producer's Roundtable held by The Hollywood Reporter, the topic came up, and here's what Damon said about whether or not he was working on something new in the world of Bourne.
"Not right now. Those things are a massive undertaking.

Matt Damon hasn’t starred in a Bourne film since 2007, and considering his character was basically a footnote in 2012’s Bourne: Legacy, no one is really clear on where his character has been. In a recenter interview with Entertainment Weekly, director Paul Greengrass (Bourne: Supremacy and Ultimatum) discussed Bourne’s whereabouts for the past 9 years, saying:
“He’s been in the shadows of Europe...he’s been active and he’s been doing hard physical work… definitely not sunning himself on the beach.”
The films are known for their high-velocity action sequences that rely more on stunt work and traditional effects as opposed to the ever growing use of CGI for, basically, almost everything. In order to keep up with the realism, Matt Damon (who is now 45) had to get back into the same shape as he was in 2002. Paul Greengrass, who expects nothing but the best from himself and his actors,...

Despite the last one coming out four years ago and earning shrugs from critics and moviegoers alike (as well as being down a central star), Universal is banking on there still being a considerable audience for the Bourne franchise with this summer’s Jason Bourne.
For the spy series’ fifth outing, the film finds Matt Damon back in the titular role with Paul Greengrass (The Bourne Supremacy, The Bourne Ultimatum) back behind the camera – which means it feels like slightly less of a bare-faced cash-grab than The Bourne Legacy. But the fact is no one knows that much about what Damon’s secret agent is actually getting up to this time around. The Super Bowl spot was cool, but entirely lacking in plot details, and no synopses for the pic have contained any information on that front.

After schooling bad guys in the deft art of close-quarters combat on the rooftops, today’s brand new batch of set photos for Bourne 5 see Matt Damon take to the streets, presumably on the hunt of a possible lead.
Hopping from Spain to London and now to Germany, Damon’s grizzled Jason Bourne returns to the fray, reuniting with director Paul Greengrass following the pair’s work across both The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum. Set to arrive almost a decade after the release of Ultimatum, early reports tease that Greengrass’ soft reboot will be situated in a post-Snowden world, exploring some of the pressing themes of information control, democracy and cyber-security in the year 2015.
As for today’s new set photos, Coming Soon confirms that filming is taking place in Kreuzberg, Germany, with action veteran Vinzenz Kiefer lending a hand as a stunt double.

After leading the critical darling that was 2009’s “The Hurt Locker,” Jeremy Renner dived headfirst into the blockbuster world with an eye towards toplining his own franchise. He took over for Matt Damon in “The Bourne Legacy” as Aaron Cross, was cast in “Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol” with the possibility of taking over for a then-unpopular Tom Cruise in future installments, and nabbed the superhero role of Hawkeye in the Marvel universe. Although he’s not exactly hurting financially, it’s pretty clear that his stock as a leading man never really took off with Damon returning to the “Bourne” series, Cruise sticking around, and Hawkeye still playing second fiddle to the other heroes in the Marvel-verse. Now, Deadline reports Renner will lose out on another franchise. 2013’s “Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters” may not have been loved by critics but the film was a modest success with audiences and that was enough.

Ridley Scott's film version of The Martian, adapted by Drew Goddard from the book by Andy Weir, is now upon us, and it boasts an impressive cast, including Matt Damon, Jessica Chastain, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Michael Pena, and more. While the supporting cast are excellent performers, this article will focus on Matt Damon, who plays the lead role.
(Sadly, The Martian is not about DC's Martian Manhunter, aka J'onn J'onzz, the noble, telepathic, shape-shifting member of the Justice League. If it were, Matt Damon would be cast against type—as he always is—but is chameleonic enough as an actor to be able to pull it off anyway—as he always does. A more obvious casting choice would be someone like Blair Underwood (The Event, Marvel's Agents of Shield), who exudes both gravitas and humanity.)

For a long time, it appeared as if it was never going to happen, but Bourne 5 is now shooting with Paul Greengrass back at the helm and Matt Damon reprising the role of Jason Bourne. Both the director and star dodged questions about returning to the franchise for years, and when Jeremy Renner was brought in to play Aaron Cross in The Bourne Legacy, it appeared as if the franchise was set to go in a very different direction.
However, that wasn’t the critical or commercial hit Universal had been hoping for, and it most definitely didn’t come as a surprise when the sequel to that was shelved in preference of the still untitled Bourne 5.
With Damon taking a break from shooting the movie to promote The Martian, he revealed in one recent interview that a big part of Bourne 5 will address where the character has been and what’s next for him.

Jason Bourne is back for more action and espionage in Bourne 5, and now the first picture of Matt Damon on set has been revealed.
The actor is looking lean, mean and decidedly shirtless in the pic, which was shared by producer Frank Marshall.
Damon is re-teaming with director Paul Greengrass on an all-new Bourne adventure, after passing on 2012's Jeremy Renner vehicle The Bourne Legacy.
The star recently dropped several hints about the film, saying that it'll be set in a "post-Snowden world".
While the plot remains tightly under wraps, Damon did let slip that the story begins in Greece ("the beginning of democracy") and ends in Las Vegas ("the most grotesque incarnation").
Julia Stiles will be back as tech expert Nicky Parsons, and joining the sequel are screen legend Tommy Lee Jones, Alicia Vikander and Vincent Cassel - who will play a villainous assassin.

Matt Damon's Bourne 5 has found a villain in the form of Vincent Cassel.

The 49-year-old is known for his roles in Black Swan and La Haine, as well as Ocean's Twelve and Ocean's Thirteen.
It was announced in 2014 that Damon will return to the Bourne series as Jason Bourne, with Paul Greengrass as director.
Julia Stiles has been confirmed to reprise the character of Nicky Parsons, Tommy Lee Jones will play a high-ranking CIA officer, and Alicia Vikander has signed up for an unknown role.

With production said to be taking place shortly on Matt Damon and Paul Greengrass’ return to the Bourne franchise, the rest of the cast is slowly coming together with Variety reporting that Black Swan and Ocean Twelve’s Vincent Cassel has come onboard for the villain role, playing an assassin on the trail of our favourite kick ass spy who’s not James Bond. Cassell joins the returning Bourne and Julia Stiles, swell as other new comers Alicia Vikander as the female lead and Tommy Lee Jones as high ranking CIA officer. Nothing much is known about this latest instalment of the popular franchise, but we do know we won’t be seeing a crossover between Bourne and Jeremy Renner’s Aaron Cross from The Bourne Legacy. Whatever it ends up being called, Bourne 5 comes our way July 29th 2016.

Matt Damon long wanted to make Bourne 5 a reality - and all he needed was for the world to change.
The actor is re-teaming with director Paul Greengrass beginning next week on an all-new Jason Bourne adventure, after passing on 2012's Jeremy Renner vehicle The Bourne Legacy.
In an interview with Buzzfeed, Damon said that a massive change in global politics was needed before he could bring back Jason Bourne.
"We always looked at those movies as really about the Bush presidency, and so we kind of had to wait for the world to change," he explained.
"Without giving too much of it away, it's Bourne through an austerity-riddled Europe and in a post-Snowden world. It seems like enough has changed, you know? There are all these kinds of arguments about spying and civil liberties and the nature of democracy."
While the plot remains tightly under wraps, Damon did let...

Jason Bourne is back in business, after an eight-year absence, in a 2016 "Bourne" movie starring Matt Damon, Julia Stiles, Alicia Vikander, Tommy Lee Jones, and (maybe?) Viggo Mortensen.
While promoting "The Martian," Matt Damon gave Buzzfeed some updates on the untitled "Bourne" sequel, which starts production next week. Damon said he and director Paul Greengrass had always looked at the "Bourne" movies as about the Bush presidency, so they took a page from John Mayer and waited on the world to change before revisiting Damon's character. Thanks to Edward Snowden and the Nsa scandal, they felt it was time to be Bourne again. Here are Damon's details on the new plot:

Ahead of American Ultra's arrival in UK cinemas, here's our pick of the 25 finest, sneakiest secret agents in film...
Operatives. Spies. Moles. Infiltrators. Secret agents go by many names. In fact, Britain's national security agency doesn't even call them agents - they're covert human intelligence sources, or simply “officers".
Whatever we choose to call them, secret agents lead necessarily furtive and obscure lives - so obscure that most of what we know about them is defined by what we've seen and read in books and movies.
During the Cold War, the image of the secret agent as a well-groomed sophisticate in a suit proliferated all over the world, and even in the high-tech landscape of the 21st century, that image still stands - just look at such movies as Kingsman: The Secret Service, The Man From U.N.C.L.E. and, of course, the Bond franchise. But secret agents can come in many other guises,...

First up Jeremy Renner spoke with ScreenRant about the Bourne franchise which he became a part of playing Aaron Cross in "The Bourne Legacy". With Matt Damon and Paul Greengrass returning to the franchise for the next outing, it's already been indicated Renner's character won't cross paths with Damon in the next film.

The odds are stacked against our good guys in Marvel's new movie Ant-Man, where thief Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) gets recruited to wear a shrinking super-suit by inventor Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) and his daughter Hope (Evangeline Lilly) in order to foil Hank's power-mad former partner, Aaron Cross (Corey Stoll). With the extended trailer for Marvel’s Agents of Shield hitting the other day, I don’t think anyone is in much doubt that the show is going to be massive. Here is a look at the trailer.
However, as with most things in Hollywood, once something is proven successful, there are most likely several other people jumping on the band wagon. I don’t doubt that we will be seeing more and more tv shows based on franchises that could well turn out to be really compelling to watch. The Bourne Legacy pulls back the curtain on a government secret even darker than Jason Bourne. When Bourne exposes Operation Treadstone at the end of The Bourne Ultimatum, he sparks a bonfire that threatens to burn down decades of research and development into the building of better spies and warriors. In The Bourne Legacy, audiences discover that there are actually a variety of covert intelligence programs - all of which now feel the threat of exposure. On the verge of having their conspiracy revealed, members of the government's intelligence community will stop at nothing to erase all evidence of their top secret programs. With his life in jeopardy, agent Aaron Cross (Jeremy Renner) must use his genetically-engineered skills to survive the ultimate game of cat-and-mouse and finish what Jason Bourne started.
