Anamaria Vartolomei, the breakout star of Audrey Diwan’s Venice prizewinning “Happening,” is under the spotlight at this year’s Cannes Film Festival playing strong women in a pair of movies, “Being Maria” and “The Count Monte Cristo.” Both movies are supported by Chanel for which Vartolomei is an ambassador.
Vartolomei says since starring in Diwan’s drama “Happening,” which was set in the 1960s and centered around the then-illegal act of abortion, she has continued being lured to demanding roles with political and social themes.
“I think movies are the expressions of my engagements as a woman, and as such I often star in films that are engaged because when you’re an actress you contribute to change and we must continue to wage this battle that other women have led before,” says Vartolomei, who was wearing a glamorous dark khaki and black silk jacquard muslin dress by Chanel.

Getting a feature into Cannes’ official selection is among the pinnacles of filmmaking achievements for most production companies. Ireland’s Element Pictures clearly isn’t most production companies — this year, it has three.
According to co-founder Ed Guiney, who set up Element with Andrew Lowe in 2001, while his company’s triple-headed festival visit may be “wonderful”, it’s simply down to good fortune and timing. “You know, some years you have nothing for Cannes,” he says, speaking from Element’s breezy, white-walled Dublin headquarters, located above an outdoor clothing shop and a jeweler on the Irish capital’s busy O’Connell Street, where it also runs its distribution arm Volta Pictures and the programming for the popular arthouse Light House Cinema, which it has operated since 2012.
But for anyone who has been keeping an eye on Element over the last decade, this edition of Cannes is merely another unprecedented milestone...

Audrey Diwan is attached to direct “The Marriage Portrait,” based on the novel by award-winning Northern Irish writer Maggie O’Farrell, best known for “Hamnet.”
Variety hears that the project will see the fast-rising French auteur team with two of Europe’s leading arthouse producers in Ireland’s Element Pictures (which has three films in Cannes’ official selection this year) and Italy’s Wildside (which has competition title “Limonov: The Ballad”). Film4 helped develop the feature.
Set in 1500s Renaissance Florence, “The Marriage Portrait” — which was published in 2022 — follows the fictional tale of young duchess Lucrezia de’ Medici, a sheltered 16-year-old who has spent her life locked inside the city’s grandest palazzo. But when her husband takes her on an unexpected visit to a country villa, it occurs to her that he has a sinister purpose — he intends to kill her.

“Emmanuelle,” a new feature from French writer-director Audrey Diwan, will world premiere in competition as the opening film for the 72nd San Sebastian Film Festival, which kicks off on September 20.
Inspired by the eponymous erotic novel by Emmanuelle Arsan, the film tells the story of a woman looking for a lost pleasure. During a business trip to Hong Kong, she meets several new people, including a man named Kei, who constantly eludes her. According to the director, the story was conceived as an exploration of pleasure in the post #MeToo era.
Diwan, a Venice Golden Lion winner for her 2021 film “Happening,” co-wrote “Emmanuelle” with fellow filmmaker Rebecca Zlotowski, whose 2013 feature “Grand Central” screened in competition at Cannes and won the François Chalais Award.
Chantelouve, Rectangle Productions and Goodfellas (formerly Wild Bunch) produce. “Emmanuelle” will be distributed by Pathé in France, where it will debut on September 25, and Beta Fiction in Spain.

At last year’s Cannes Film Festival, Leonardo DiCaprio, Harrison Ford and Scarlett Johansson hit the red carpet to premiere their latest big movies. But Hollywood may have a much lighter presence at the 2024 edition of one of the world’s most notable film festivals.
The culprit is the combination of last year’s actors and writers strikes, which created production delays, as well as a tough economy that’s leading studios to tighten the purse-strings. But there will still be stars on the Croisette, in addition to “Barbie” director Greta Gerwig, who will be presiding over the jury.
Based on intelligence from industry insiders on both sides of the Atlantic, the upcoming edition will have a larger emphasis on European auteurs, along the lines of Justine Triet’s “Anatomy of a Fall” and Jonathan Glazer’s “The Zone of Interest,” which were each nominated for five Oscars.

It was still some years before he attained iconic status as a Bollywood villain while revealing his real identity to the bemused hero in his trademark soft yet menacing drawl, but before Ajit, whose birth anniversary falls on January 27, became the “Loin”, he had to receive a salutary lesson in dealing with big cats onscreen – from Balraj Sahni.
Ajit recalled they were shooting for costume swashbuckler “Dharti” (1970) – a remake of Tamil film “Sivandha Mann” with Rajendra Kumar stepping into the shoes of Sivaji Ganesan, and a scene had him, as the evil Diwan, coming down on a lift with a tiger on a leash to where Sahni was waiting.
However, Sahni refused to go along, noting that he had agreed to “work with humans, not beasts”, and the scene had to be shot without him.

Actor and filmmaker Valérie Donzelli will reteam with her “Just the Two of Us” co-writer Audrey Diwan – a Golden Lion winner with “Happening” – to pen “The Infinite Present Ends,” a literary adaption that Donzelli is slated to direct.
Based on a fictionalized 2015 memoir from psychiatric nurse Mary Dorsan, the text embeds within a teenage psychiatric ward over the course of a year, teasing out the complex bonds, challenges, frustrations and unexpected moments of grace shared between patients and caregivers. Though unflinching in its evocations of violence, the project’s central theme is that of sentimental education, per Donzelli.
“These social workers must find ways to love these children that are not their own,” Donzelli tells Variety. “They must find the right and constructive outlets for that love, so we want to explore this idea of education within the various forms of affection we give.”

As we welcome in the New Year, we can reveal our annual (non-exhaustive) list of U.S. and international movies we think could grace the festival circuit in 2024. We’ve stuck to our criteria that the project must already be in production and have not already been announced for a festival. More than 70% of our selections last year went on to debut at a major festival. Those that didn’t were largely delayed by the strike or are still in post-production. If the titles below make the cut, it will be a thrilling year on the festival circuit once again.

Two-time Oscar nominee Naomi Watts has joined the cast of “Emmanuelle,” Audrey Diwan’s highly anticipated erotic drama, Variety has confirmed.
Diwan’s follow-up to the Venice-prizewinning “Happening,” the film is inspired by Emmanuelle Arsan’s novel and is based on a script co-developed by Diwan and Rebecca Zlotowski (“Other People’s Children”). The book centers on a woman and the series of erotic fantasies that she entertains. It was previously made into a 1974 film of the same name, directed by Just Jaeckin and starring Sylvia Kristel, which became a cult hit.
Watts revealed the news when she posted a now-deleted Instagram Story with “Emmanuelle” co-star Noemie Merlant, a critically acclaimed French actor who broke through in Céline Sciamma’s “Portrait of a Lady on Fire” and made her English-speaking debut in Todd Field’s Oscar-nominated film “Tar.” Merlant plays the titular role in “Emmanuelle.” The rest of the cast comprises...

Exclusive: The success of Audrey Diwan’s sophomore feature Happening made her next gig as a filmmaker an intriguing one. Her choice of project, created even more intrigue.
As we first revealed last year, that project is English-language debut Emmanuelle, inspired by the character and world created by writer Emmanuelle Arsan, whose 1967 novel of the same name was adapted into the lucrative and cult 1970s soft-core movie starring Sylvia Kristel.

Yesterday we read the Neon folks were “circling” and that morphed into “buying” the North American rights to the highly anticipated third feature film by Golden Lion winner Audrey Diwan. While the old idea of Emmanuelle might need no introduction, suffice to say we can’t wait to see what the Diwan and Rebecca Zlotowski co-written project will look like. The looming question at this juncture is whether Cannes has any possibility of securing a finished film for its invite. Our inclination is that this is likely heading to Venice.

On the face of it, Grégoire is the kind of husband that makes many a woman wish hers would shape up a bit. He’s tall, strong and stylish, with a job in banking that comfortably pays the bills, and the sculpted good looks of, well, the actor Melvil Poupaud — who plays him with enough upfront charm to cover a slight chill at the edges. All that, and he dotes on his wife Blanche (Virginie Efira), insisting on a degree of togetherness that makes clear his fidelity. Those observing more closely, however, may have other concerns: Why is he constantly calling her at work? Why does she never go out with friends? That he’s a psychotic abuser isn’t played as a surprise twist in Valérie Donzelli’s nervy, finely acted domestic thriller “Just the Two of Us” — even as it dabbles in genre tropes, the film presents an all-too-unremarkable reality for many women.

Currently in pre-production phase and deep in the casting process, Audrey Diwan (who will be in Cannes as the head of the Critic’s Week jury) appears to have lassoed the actress she knows well for her highly anticipated buzzy third feature film. Golden Lion-winning Happening in Anamaria Vartolomei might have joined the project and would likely play one of the many Western ex-pats that are part of the main character’s entourage. As we already know, Noémie Merlant landed the top role in Emmanuelle – the one of the sexually adventurous wife. The project was co-written by Diwan and Rebecca Zlotowski. It’s a particularly great moment for Vartolomei who might surface in Cannes next month (if they add the title in the last wave offerings) with Bruno Dumont’s L’Empire, and she is attached to play Maria Schneider in Jessica Palud’s Maria.…...

In the early 1990s, Shakereh Khaleeli, the granddaughter of the Diwan of Mysore, was found dead in the courtyard of her own home. Her skeletal remains were discovered by the Karnataka police in 1994, three years after Shakerah’s daughter raised an alarm that her mother was missing. Shakerah’s remains led to a particularly gruesome revelation—that she was buried alive. The man accused of killing her is currently serving a life sentence. Amazon Prime’s new series, Dancing on The Grave, tries to bring the Richmond Road case back into the limelight. The series is one of the latest in the ever-growing genre of true crime. It primarily relies on material from the India Today Archives,...

Two-time Oscar winner Chloé Zhao does not want to be one of the few exceptions.
From Songs My Brothers Taught Me and The Rider to Nomadland and Eternals, Zhao knows how to make an impact onscreen, but now she’s determined to make a difference offscreen, so that the list of Oscar-winning female directors can someday become significantly longer than just her, Jane Campion and Kathryn Bigelow.
To get the ball rolling, Zhao has now teamed up with Johnnie Walker’s First Strides Initiative and Women in Film to celebrate female filmmakers and create further opportunities for women both in front of and behind the camera. To commemorate their partnership at the upcoming 16th Annual Women in Film Oscar Party, Johnnie Walker commissioned a custom red carpet with panels that pay tribute to other notable women directors including Gina Prince-Bythewood, Ana Lily Amirpour, Janicza Bravo, Christine Choy, Julie Dash, Wanuri Kahiu and Claire Denis.

Studiocanal has boarded development on part English-language thriller Smiling Hacker which is currently being written by Audrey Diwan.
Anna Marsh, Deputy CEO of parent group Canal+ Group, teased the project at an event in Paris on Wednesday promoting the pay-tv giant’s commitment to local and international cinema and launching a new channel bannered Canal+ Box Office.
The film is loosely inspired by Algerian hacker Hamza Bendelladj. He made headlines internationally for stealing from U.S. banks and giving the proceeds to charity and came to be known as the “Smiling Hacker” or “Happy Hacker”.
Marsh said talks were underway to sign The Serpent and The Mauritanian star Tahar Rahim for the lead role and Belgian Bad Boys directorial duo Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah to direct.

Following up her Golden Lion-winning drama Happening, director Audrey Diwan announced plans last year to make her English-language debut with Emmanuelle. This latest adaptation of Emmanuelle Arsan’s novel, which follows a woman and the series of erotic fantasies that she entertains, had cast Léa Seydoux in its lead role, but now a change-up has occurred.
Deadline reports that Noémie Merlant has stepped in to take the lead of the project, which was scripted by Diwan and Rebecca Zlotowski (whose latest film Other People’s Children arrives this spring). With production set to kick off this September in Hong Kong followed by a likely 2024 premiere, Diwan shared some new details on her approach.

Happening (Audrey Diwan)
Diwan’s sophomore feature is an unglamorous, straightforward film that tells a simple story about an ordinary girl. It is also the single most intense, shatteringly empathetic thing I’ve seen all year. Carried by Anamaria Vartolomei’s fiercely committed performance, the ’60s-set drama takes on the subject of unintended pregnancy and illustrates how far from a political / religious issue it can be when it happens to you. Abortion has been dealt with in landmark films, but the intimacy of perspective achieved here feels truly unmatched. A vital call for kindness like no other. – Zhuo-Ning Su

Following part one of our 2023 preview, we’re counting down our 50 most-anticipated films of the year.
50. Emmanuelle (Audry Diwan)
After winning the coveted Golden Lion at the 2021 Venice Film Festival with an adaptation of Nobel Prize-winning author Annie Ernaux’s Happening, Audrey Diwan is adapting the erotic novel Emmanuelle with Léa Seydoux tapped to star. The film will convey the sexual journey of a young woman who has intimate encounters with men and women in a series of erotic fantasies, making for a contemplative look at the aesthetics of desire. Diwan has an innate talent in adapting decades-old narratives and making them resonate with striking alacrity, and in a media landscape that is becoming more censorious, Emmanuelle should be a balm. – Margaret R.

Rosalie Varda and Audrey Diwan have boarded Adrian Moyse Dullin’s live action short “The Right Words” as executive producers.
The film, which was selected for Cannes’ Palme d’Or competition last year, tells the story of a brother and sister who get a kick out of embarrassing each other on social media. One day, on a crowded bus home from school, the sister convinces her younger brother to approach his crush.
“When naive and romantic Mahdi is peer-pressured into confessing his love to Jada, a girl who doesn’t know he exists, his declaration becomes a public spectacle,” reads the logline.
“The Right Words” is written and directed by Moyse Dullin and represents his fiction debut. He is currently working on a feature film about love. The short is produced by Punchline Cinéma co-founder Lucas Tothe with cinematography by Augustin Barbaroux.
The film has been shortlisted for the 2023 Césars and is an Oscar qualifier.

‘Le Film Français’ is a must-read for the French film industry so it was not long before the cover started prompting reactions from top female film professionals in the sector as it landed in their mailboxes on Friday morning.

Oscar winner Florian Zeller (The Father), fresh off Venice Film Festival drama The Son, is launching production firm Blue Morning Pictures with backing from European studio Mediawan (Call My Agent).
Zeller will oversee the company out of Paris and LA with former CAA agent Federica Sainte-Rose. As part of the deal, Mediawan will finance and produce the slate of film and TV projects with Blue Morning Pictures.
After a career as a playwright, Zeller adapted and directed his first film, The Father, based on his play of the same name, starring Anthony Hopkins and Olivia Colman. The film received six Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, with Zeller co-winning Best Adapted Screenplay.
Sainte-Rose previously served as an agent in CAA’s Media Finance department, where she was involved in the packaging and sales of films including Christos Nikou’s Fingernails, Ninja Thyberg’s Pleasure, Audrey Diwan’s Happening, and Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia’s The Platform.

France has overhauled the composition of its Oscar selection committee for the second time in three years.
Under the move, the heads of the Cannes Film Festival, export agency Unifrance and the César Academy will no longer have an automatic place on the committee.
The changes were announced in the French government’s daily bulletin as amendments to the regulatory code governing the country’s National Cinema Centre, which oversees the process each autumn.
A key change is that the slot automatically reserved for the head of the Cannes Film Festival has been replaced by “a qualified person in the cinema domain”.
This means that long-time Cannes delegate Thierry Frémaux who has been on the committee for more than a decade will likely not be involved in the selection for France’s 2023 Oscar submission.
Current Unifrance president Serge Toubiana and the César Academy Veronique Cayla will be allowed to participate...

Editor’s Note: French filmmaker and screenwriter Audrey Diwan is the director of Venice Golden Lion-winning abortion drama Happening (L’Evénément). Adapted from celebrated French writer Annie Ernaux’s autobiographical novel of the same name, it follows the emotionally harrowing and physically perilous battle of a brilliant literature student to obtain an abortion in 1963, some 12 years before it was made legal in France. The film’s unexpectedly timely U.S. release by IFC Films in May coincided with news via a leaked document that the Supreme Court was on the verge of overturning the landmark 1973 Roe v. Wade ruling that recognized women’s constitutional right to abortion in the US. This came to pass on Friday (June 24). As abortion clinics begin closing in some U.S. states, Diwan has penned a column for us on a decision that has sent shockwaves across the world.
We should not lie to ourselves. Let’s start with the facts.
