The Hollywood Fringe Festival took in a record haul as the arts event marked its fifth year. Organizers announced the theater festival, which closed June 29, filled 46,000 seats for its 290 productions bringing in a total of $389,000. All of that money goes to the actors and producers. More than half the tickets were sold directly through the festival’s box office with the remaining 48 percent of transactions done at the door of the 64 venues in L.A.'s Hollywood neighborhood. The festival saw a 170-percent increase in ticket sales over its inaugural run in 2010. “Every year we feel like it was better than last year,” Ben Hill, the festival’s director and founder, recently told Backstage. “But in the end, it’s about community. I think a lot of other festivals miss that. We believe that it’s out of that sense of community that comes future great art works.” The two...

The Hollywood Fringe had a wide array of offerings this year, including a “Girls”-themed stage play transplanted from New York and a “bromantic tragedy." The festival continues to struggle for recognition outside of the arts community in Los Angeles, although it's been attracting a growing audience of theatergoers. Attendance has nearly doubled in the last four years, going from 17,000 in 2010 to 35,000 last year. Figures for this year are still being compiled, but organizers said it was an increase over 2013. “Every year we feel like it was better than last year,” said Ben Hill, the festival’s director and founder. “But in the end, it’s about community. I think a lot of other festivals miss that. We believe that it’s out of that sense of community that comes future great art works.” The two productions singled for recognition by the audience were “No Homo - A Bromantic Tragedy,...

There’s still time to enter a theatrical production into the Hollywood Fringe Festival. Just don’t call it a showcase. “We avoid the word ‘showcase,’ as that is a rather pregnant word in Los Angeles,” said Ben Hill, the festival’s director and founder. He recalled, with an audible shudder, the bad old days when most plays were honeypots staged in intimate theaters with Spartan production design by actors, with the sole purpose of attracting managers and agents. “The performing arts in Los Angeles has long since surpassed the ‘showcase’ paradigm,” said Hill. “Now we have people coming and actually trying to create great art for the purpose of the art.” The purpose of the Fringe isn’t just art for art’s sake. Participating artists get to keep 100 percent of their ticket sales and only pay a $175–$250 registration fee and the reduced space-rental cost to mount their production.

The Hollywood Fringe Festival is getting longer. The 2013 theater expo will run June 13–30, with a week of previews leading up to opening curtain. That’s a week longer than the previous three years, organizers announced Thursday. Festival organizers, who say they have a “come-one-come-all” mentality, are hoping to improve on the 25,000 tickets sold in 2012, which generated some $200,000 for artists and venues. “This supportive community is part of the reason our attendance has increased dramatically from year to year,” Ben Hill, the festival’s director, said in a statement. “By adding an additional week for Fringe 2013, we hope that we can provide a wider range of entertainment for audiences while also welcoming more producing groups into our already-diverse pool of performing artists.” Interested in participating? The first workshops to assist venues will be held Jan. 17 at Theatre Asylum. Registration opens Feb. 1 and closes April 1. Organizers say the event is “open and...

Los Angeles theater is about to get weird. Kicking off June 14, the Hollywood Fringe Festival brings the absurd, the avant-garde, and the just plain strange to stages across the Southland. For any artist who wants to put on a show, the festival is a rare opportunity to do so without risk of rejection."There is no curatorial aspect of what the shows are," says Ben Hill, festival director and co-founder. "No one is trying to set guidelines for what performances have to mean. It has become a real representation of all the emerging arts in Los Angeles."There is not even a selection committee for the fest, and any performer who can secure a venue can take part, making it a singular opportunity for budding artists. This unconventional format is based on the original Edinburgh Festival Fringe, created in Scotland in 1947. This year more than 200 shows, featuring hundreds of...

Tim Tebow is as known for his game-time prayer poses as he is for his fourth-quarter comebacks. Come Saturday night, the Denver Broncos quarterback will get yet another shot at redemption. The game comes a week after a noteworthy Broncos victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers, in which Tebow threw a career-high 316 yards (a number that corresponds to his favorite Bible verse). But last time Tebow went head-to-head with Tom Brady's New England Patriots, his six-game winning streak was put to a halt in the hands of the seasoned pro. The second annual Hollywood Fringe Festival, a three-week celebration of the arts, will generate a flurry of activity in L.A.'s most heavily concentrated small-theater district June 9–26, including a week of previews. The prime fare comprises theater and other performing arts, though film and visual arts also are part of the mix. Several leading local 99-Seat theater companies—such as the Actors' Gang, the Open Fist Theatre, Theatre of Note, and the Elephant Theatre—will participate. So will offerings from ambitious independent theater artists and fledgling companies eager to showcase their talents in a low-cost, no-frills environment. Styles ranging from avant-garde to the gleefully frivolous can be expected in the festival's highly eclectic bill of fare.Solo shows are again plentiful this year, but there are many other types of attractions as well. Says festival director and the organization's founder, Ben Hill, "Depending on how you define theater, it makes up 60 to.

In my experience of a typical night at a gay bar — particularly on 90's House night — there is always at least one fierce lady-boy, dramatically growing intoxicated from all of the Cosmos he's consumed, and thus treating the dance floor as if it were his very own runway. He's the one strutting hard and giving face like there's no tomorrow, and at that very moment, he's feeling like a supermodel — with not a care in the world.
Well, at least until all that fried calamari he ate beforehand gets hurled onto the sidewalk outside of the club leaving his supermodel model moment sadly ruined.
Most of us have had that “runway” moment in our lives, at least once or twice (the strutting, not the hurling!). I myself have probably “strutted” at least 15 times in public, usually not as gracefully as I would’ve liked. Please try not to judge — I...
