Taking ancient history and an inflated bank balance out of the equation, what do Liverpool Football Club really have on Everton?
Sure, the Reds are more successful on paper with a bigger global fanbase, but the Premier League is in the midst of a chaotic transition – an age where giants are falling and underdogs threatening to take their place – and there are signs that the balance of power in Merseyside football could be approaching tipping point.
Liverpool are themselves in a period of transition, with Jurgen Klopp inheriting a side that’s been mismanaged for several seasons and in need of a summer clearout. Meanwhile, across Stanley Park Everton have assembled their best squad since the 1980s.

Goodison Park was left gobsmacked when Dimitri Payet found the back of the net in the final minute, handing West Ham United a 3-2 victory over a ten-man Everton side that held a two-goal lead just 12 minutes earlier.
It was a game the Blues should have put to bed in the 69th minute when, at two-nil up, they were awarded a penalty for a foul on Muhamed Basic by Alex Song. Prolific hitman Romelu Lukaku stepped up, but his complacent spot kick was saved by Hammers stopper Adrian in the bottom corner.
This was a pivotal moment in the match as Slaven Bilic’s side pulled one back through Michail Antonio’s bullet header in the 78th minute, before Diafra Sakho levelled things up three minutes later. Payet capped off the remarkable comeback at the death, gaining possession inside the box and sliding the ball beyond...

When a signing goes to plan, the new recruit enriches the team, lifts the squad, and gives the supporters renewed hope for the future. Everton manager Roberto Martinez has proven efficient in the transfer market, bolstering the Blues with the shrew captures of Romelu Lukaku, Gerard Deulofeu, and Gareth Barry, to name but a few of the Catalan’s coups.
But for every free-scoring Belgian and silky-skilled Spaniard, there’s always an Arouna Kone and Aiden McGeady – forgettable signings whose recruitment gives Martinez and his scouting operation about as much wheeler-dealer cred as Rodney and Del Boy.
There’s always the good and the bad… but there’s also the downright weird, transfer business that makes you wonder what they were putting in the water supply when the club’s management paraded these players in front of a bemused press conference.

Everton made a statement of intent when they splashed out £13.5 million on Deadline Day to bring Senegalese forward Oumar Niasse to the club from Lokomotiv Moscow.
The 25-year-old, who has signed a four-and-a-half-year deal at Goodison Park, could make his debut in this weekend’s Premier League clash with Stoke City.
It’s a great day for me, a big dream to play in the Premier League and a big dream to play for Everton,” Niasse told Evertontv upon his arrival at the club. “Everton is one of the best teams in the Premier League and the Premier League is one of the best leagues in the world.

Boos reverberated around Goodison Park as the referee brought their last Premier League outing, a disappointing 2-1 defeat to relegation-battling Swansea City, to a close. One thing was abundantly clear to the home supporters who stayed until the final whistle: the blue half of Merseyside is losing faith in Roberto Martinez and his underachieving Toffees.
Since the Swans turned Goodison into a cauldron of discontent, the Blues have blown the opportunity to compete for their first silverware in over two decades at Wembley Stadium by surrendering a two-goal aggregate lead in the second leg of their League Cup semi-final at Manchester City.
Although Everton saved some face over the weekend by seeing off League Two minnows Carlisle United in the Fa Cup, a run of just three league wins since September coupled with the worst home defensive record in the division paints a damning picture.

Not for the first time this season, Everton were derailed by injury blows and defensive errors as relegation battlers Swansea City left Goodison Park with maximum points.
The Swans, with new manager Francesco Guideline at the helm, took the lead from the penalty spot in the 17th minute through Gylfi Sigurdsson, who calmly slotted home from 12 yards after Everton goalkeeper Tim Howard brought down Andre Ayew in the box.
The Toffees drew level moments later thanks to Gareth Barry’s first goal in two years, the midfield veteran flicking the ball home following a Gerard Deulofeu corner. But the parity lasted less than ten minutes as Ayew capitalised on another defensive lapse from the home side and fired the Welsh outfit back in front with 34 on the clock.

Everton manager Roberto Martinez has confirmed that the club has made an approach to sign Leeds United star Sam Byram.
BBC journalist Adam Pope revealed on Twitter that the offer is in the region of £4 million, but a deal is yet to be finalised.
Whites head coach Steve Evans said that Everton’s bid has been accepted, paving the way for the player’s representatives to hold talks at Goodison Park, but was quick to point out that Byram is still a Leeds player at present.
“Sam Byram has come into training today [Friday]. His advisors are having a chat with Everton, but just because they’re talking it doesn’t mean it’s done,” he told BBC Radio. “If it doesn’t look like being finished I expect to be able to play him.”

With the Premier League’s joint-top goalscorer, England’s brightest defensive prospect, and some of the best young midfielders in the business on its books, Everton’s greatest challenge could be keeping hold of his prized assets this transfer window.
Some of Europe’s top clubs are circling the likes of Romelu Lukaku and John Stones, but Goodison Park is no longer the revolving-door talent hub it once was. Manager Roberto Martinez continues to repel bids for his star players, yet with Champions League qualification no more than a pipe dream, holding onto them longterm could be a big ask.
Then there are valuable squad players like Steven Naismith and Kevin Mirallas, a talented duo who are finding first-team football hard to come by at Everton and may choose to seek it at pastures new, rather than fight for the right to cast off their benchwarmer tags.

Everton’s South African midfielder Steven Pienaar has been tipped to leave Goodison Park at the end of the season, with former club Ajax touted as the likely destination.
According to the South Africa national team’s official Twitter account (via Liverpool Echo), the player’s business manager Robert Moore has confirmed that the deal is under discussion.
Pienaar returned from a lengthy injury layoff last weekend when Everton defeated Dagenham & Redbridge 2-0 in the Fa Cup, but it is unclear whether he features in manager Roberto Martinez’s first-team plans.
The 33-year-old winger has made almost 200 appearances for Everton across two spells with the club and two loan stints. He rejoined the Blues from Tottenham Hotspur in 2012 following an unsuccessful stay in London.
He played for Ajax between 2001 and 2006, scoring 15 times in 94 appearances before leaving the Netherlands for Borussia Dortmund.

Everton’s ambitions to capture Dynamo Kiev’s Andriy Yarmolenko have been boosted, following reports that the Ukrainian international’s representatives recently attended Goodison Park.
The player’s agents watched the Blues defeat Manchester City 2-1 in the first leg of last week’s Capital One Cup semi-final, fuelling rumours that the Toffees are the frontrunners for his signature.
Yarmolenko will cost Everton around £20 million should they wish to go ahead with the transfer in January, according to The Mirror.
Blues boss Roberto Martinez attempted to recruit the forward last summer, only for the move to be scuppered by Dynamo president Ihor Surkis, a man with a reputation as one of the toughest negotiators in European football.
Surkis was said to be against selling Yarmolenko this season, since Dynamo have secured a place in the last 16 of the Champions League, but the latest reports...

Being hard as nails isn’t a prerequisite to playing professional football on Merseyside, but it certainly helps, regardless of whether you happen to bleed red or blue.
Everton have had more than their fair share of bruisers over the years, fearsome characters who never shied away from a leg-biting tackle, gave the opposition nightmares, and made Goodison Park recoil and cheer in equal measure.
Roberto Martinez’s current Toffees squad is a far cry from Joe Royle’s ‘Dogs of War’, dedicated to a style of play that’s easier on the eye, but the no-holds-barred mentality of Muhamed Besic and Ramiro Funes Mori harks back to the combative days of old.
The Goodison faithful have always loved a crunching challenge and a fiery scrapper who’s willing to give his right nut for the team, and with this in mind, here are the top...

The youngster, who has signed a four-and-a-half-year deal at Goodison Park, has been loaned back to the Swiss outfit until the end of the season so he can complete his national service.

Everton will take a slender lead into the second leg of their Capital One Cup semi-final against Manchester City after battling to a 2-1 victory over Manuel Pellegrini’s side at a packed-out Goodison Park.

Chelsea have bid £45 million for Everton defender John Stones, according to Spanish outlet Fichajes.
This is the fourth offer the reigning Barclays Premier League champions have made for the England international, after seeing three bids knocked back by the Toffees last summer. Their final bid of £37million was point-blank refused by Roberto Martinez, despite Stones filing a formal transfer request.
Now, The Blues see the 21-year-old as the man to martial their leaky defence after setting off on one of the worst Premier League title defences of all time.
Towards the end of Jose Mourinho’s reign, both John Terry and Gary Cahill were hung out to dry. The players paid the price for numerous bad results Chelsea suffered. Who could forget former England skipper Terry being hauled off at half time at The Etihad during a humiliating 3-0 defeat against Manchester City in August?

The back pages are awash with more rumours than usual, chairmen across the country have dusted their cheque books off, and greedy agents are salivating at the thought of their imminent commission fees: the winter transfer window has officially opened.
Many of England’s top clubs are out to bag a bargain to plug that gaping hole in defence or nip their goalscoring woes in the bud, and Everton (fans hope) will be no exception.
Blues boss Roberto Martinez has a solid track record when it comes to winter dealing but, as has long been the case at Goodison Park, budgetary constraints could limit the Spaniard to rising Championship stars, Tottenham Hotspur rejects and loan rangers.
That said, Steven Naismith’s proposed £8 million move to Norwich City may give the Toffees some extra funding to play with, as well as provide Martinez with incentive to bolster his attacking options.

Manchester United are interested in signing Everton full-back Seamus Coleman this summer, reigniting a potential deal that former manager David Moyes was believed to keen on during his time at the club.
According to Sky Sports, United are yet to make any formal contact, but Louis Van Gaal is a firm admirer of the Irish international after witnessing another season of strong displays.
Winger Antonio Valencia filled United’s right-back berth for much of the 2014/15 campaign and although the Ecuadorian did an admirable job, it has been a problem position for a number of years.
Rafael has been unable to prove himself after months of further frustrating fitness issues, while the likes of Phil Jones and Chris Smalling are much better suited to the centre of defence, despite each having played at right-back on a number of occasions in the past.

Everton manager Roberto Martinez has jumped to the defence of midfielder Ross Barkley after the latest diving criticism.
Barkley received a booking in the game against Manchester City on Saturday afternoon when he went down under pressure from Frank Lampard.
Replays have since shown that there was contact between the pair but the referee deemed it otherwise and gave the young England starlet a yellow card for simulation. This incident follows one of similar nature last month where he was accused of diving in the 2-1 win over West Ham at Goodison Park.
Martinez has since came out and expressed his disappointment at the yellow card, questioning how referee Andre Marriner gave Manchester City a match-winning penalty for a similar type of incident yet booked Barkley.
“I couldn’t believe the yellow card. I’m more hurt by that than the penalty decision,” said the Everton boss.

Unlike the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City and Manchester United, Everton cannot afford to splash huge amounts of money on proven world-class talent. The history of the club is a large allure to many who have joined over the years, but sadly in this modern football climate, money talks.
Despite the fact they paid £28 million for Chelsea’s Romelu Lukaku this summer, that was a result of the increased money the club made from the new TV revenue deal that was agreed this year, and the sale of Marouane Fellaini to Manchester United the previous summer. In fact, the club is forced to often look to its youth academy for the next bright star of the future, with it becoming a club policy to develop young players that can become future first team players.
That has been evidenced across the David Moyes era at the club,...

Everton are one of the most successful teams to have played in England’s top league, having been one of the Football League’s founder members all the way back in 1888. The club has competed in the top division for a record 110 seasons and have won the League Championship nine times, which is a pretty impressive haul for any football club.
However, since the formation of the Premier League in 1992, the club has not been as successful as the fan base would like having struggled financially throughout that period and the early 2000s. The club won their last trophy in an Fa Cup success under Joe Royal in 1995, but the resurgence under David Moyes and more recently Roberto Martinez has left fans hopeful of success returning once more.

Everton were busy in this year’s summer transfer market, spending almost £40M and smashing their transfer record in the process as Roberto Martinez looks to build on his side’s superb effort of finishing 5th last season.
The Blues failed to sign Tom Cleverly from Manchester United on transfer deadline day as the midfielder chose to join Aston Villa instead, and late bids for Danny Welbeck, Ryan Shawcross and Columbian midfielder Carlos Sanchez all failed, with the latter joining Villa as well.
Regardless of that, some good business was done. Martinez has certainly had the transfer funds that David Moyes did not receive at the club and looks set rival the likes of Liverpool, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur for a Champions League spot.
Blues fans expect big things for Martinez’s second year at the club considering the wonders he worked last season,...

After seeing potential moves for Ryan Shawcross and Matija Nastasic evaporate earlier in the day, Everton might well be about to profit from another club’s misfortune, as they pounce to try and bring Manchester United midfielder Tom Cleverley in before the end of the transfer window.
According to Sky Sports, that deal would be a season long loan, rather than the £7m move that Villa and Valencia had been linked to earlier in the week.
In line with reports, Everton have now been made 4/7 favourites to sign the Englishman.
Cleverley had very publicly been made available as part of Louis Van Gaal’s extensive unwanted list, alongside Shinji Kagawa, former Everton player Marouane Fellaini and Anderson. And while he hasn’t quite lived up to his billing at Manchester United, the player is talented enough to stay in the Premier League, and is...

Despite news overnight on social media that Ryan Shawcross might be on his way to Everton – and SkyBet making the side 1/2 favourites to sign him before the deadline – any hopes of a deal have just been killed stone dead.
According to Sky Sports, the reports of a deal were over-exaggerated, which follows on from the MailOnline suggesting that Everton cannot afford the fee suggested to them by Stoke for their 26-year-old captain.
Roberto Martinez had made a late enquiry after his side conceded six against Chelsea, and proved exactly why defensive reinforcements are required. Unfortunately for Everton fans, they can only offer up to £8million for Shawcross – after an expensive summer – and Stoke simply would not sell for that price.
Martinez will now have to look elsewhere for defensive options to bolster the ranks and ease the burden on first choice pairing Phil Jagielka...

After already doing some good work in the transfer market – not least the acquisition of Romelu Lukaku and the long-term contract that they tied Ross Barkley to – Everton look set to unveil another high-profile signing before the transfer deadline stops business dead.
Having previously been linked with Liverpool – before Mario Balotelli sauntered his way into Anfield – Cameroonian striker Samuel Eto’o looks set to become the latest addition to Roberto Martinez’s Blues revolution, according to Sky sources.
According to Espn, when Martinez decided that he needed to add another forward to his available options – with Arouna Kone out injured and the worrying injury to Lukaku against Everton – he had a couple of options: either to go with free agent Eto’o and inevitably play him a hefty contract, or try and convince Manchester United to part with Danny Welbeck for a reasonable sum...

The late kick-off today is the first game of the season to pit two proclaimed Top Four challengers against one another as Arsenal look to build on their opening day win over Southampton with a better performance, but a similar result against Roberto Martinez’s Everton.
Arsenal were expected to ring the changes after losing Arteta to injury in midweek, and welcome back their returning World Cup stars, and Arsen Wenger will no doubt hope that he can avoid a repeat of Everton’s impressive 3-0 victory at Goodison last year.

Ghanaian midfielder Christian Atsu today became the thirteenth player to leave Stamford Bridge on loan after signing for a year with Everton. The 22-year old previously enjoyed a productive spell at Chelsea’s Dutch feeder club, Vitesse Arnhem, before impressing with confident displays in his nation’s three games at the World Cup.
Atsu arrived at Chelsea from Porto in September 2013 for £3.5m, moving to Arnhem soon after signing a five year contract. Whilst his nickname, ‘The African Messi’, may be overstating his abilities a tad, he’s a versatile attacking midfielder as comfortable playing centrally as on either wing. He was one of few players to come out of Vitesse’s dismal post-Christmas form last season with any credit, managing a creditable five goals and six assists in thirty appearances. He’s a capable passer, very quick on the ground and has a good work ethic,...

It was a season to remember for Everton fans as the curtains fell in the middle of May; they had made a huge return to European finishing fifth under the reign former Wigan boss Roberto Martinez. Now, three months later, the Spaniard has been tasked with doing it all over again as the new Premier League season draws ever closer. It’s the perfect time for Martinez to introduce some new faces into the squad to possibly challenge for a top four position, and he’s just done so with considerable aplomb.
But stability is also a key pointer in building for success, and Martinez has been smart in his dealings this summer, completing a deal to bring Gareth Barry – a key player last season – to Merseyside permanently, adding defensive steel in Muhamed Besic and ensuring that two of his most important attackers last year remained with him.

With Chelsea strikers having become so profligate in front of goal in recent seasons, it makes little sense that Jose Mourinho would readily depart with the prolific Romelu Lukaku before he has even entered the best years of his career. At just 21 years of age, he has over 30 caps for his country, has scored in a World Cup quarter-final and reached double figures in each of his last two seasons on loan in the Premier League.
Built like the returning Stamford Bridge icon Didier Drogba, and possessing frightening pace to accompany his larger-than-life frame, Lukaku is a menacing presence for any Premier League defender. The only thing that held him back at Stamford Bridge, it would appear, was patience.
For it was his lack of it which demanded a last-dash loan move to Everton last September, when it was in fact Demba Ba who was almost granted his wish.

Everton are not only about to pull off one of the coups of the season, but also of the club’s entire history, as they close in on the eye-wateringly (but reassuringly) expensive capture of Romelu Lukaku from Chelsea.
With confirmation expected in the next few hours, the player has taken to social media to tweet out a picture of him on board a plane – reportedly headed for Merseyside – carrying the caption “Time to write a new chapter….” That new chapter will cost Roberto Martinez’s traditionally frugal team around £24m, earning Chelsea a £5m mark-up on a player they’ve never given a chance to, and who was unthinkably not deemed of a sufficient quality to actually play for them. The finances of the football world continue to baffle.

Arguably the hottest topic of football discussion in the English domestic game at the moment – particularly since the vacant Manchester United management position was filled by Louis van Gaal – is the ongoing saga at White Hart Lane regarding who will become the new Tottenham Hotspur manager.

Manchester City prevailed 3-1 over a spirited Sunderland side at Wembley Stadium on Sunday to win the Capital One Cup – manager Manuel Pellegrini’s first trophy in English football.
For Manchester United fans, the sight of their neighbours in Blue lifting the League Cup aloft was likely an unbearable one, especially given their current plights.
United will probably finish this season empty handed having dropped out of the title race some time ago and been eliminated from the two domestic cup competitions.
They also have a real battle on their hands if they are to reach the Champions League quarter-finals, having lost the first leg of their last-16 clash to Olympiakos 2-0 in Greece.
City meanwhile can still win the quadruple and prove they are the new ‘big dogs’ in Manchester having been labelled United’s ‘noisy neighbours’ in recent times.

Everton’s bid to overhaul their Merseyside rivals Liverpool for fourth place got a bit more urgent today, as their on-loan forward Romelu Lukaku signalled his need to play in next season’s Champions League.
He told the Belgian media that after five years in professional football he feels his time has come to play Champions League football, and that he needs to develop at a higher level. While it could be argued that Lukaku should focus on his current task at Everton, and attempt to improve himself there, manager Roberto Martinez will certainly have one eye on the summer, and the need to bring in new striking blood.

Everton were dealt a cruel blow in their quest for European football when they were beaten by a solitary Emmanuel Adebayor goal in the 1-0 defeat to Tottenham on Sunday. It was only their 4th league defeat of the season, but 2 of those defeats have come in the last 3 games, having been put to the sword by their Merseyside neighbours in their previous away fixture.
Their peformance at White Hart Lane was much more assured than the derby game and Martinez will take heart from that, but both defeats could prove to be pivotal come the end of the season as they came against direct rivals for European qualification.
Here we take a look at some of the things we learned from Sunday’s game and consider where Everton go from here.

Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert said his side “didn’t deserve to lose” after Everton fought back from a goal down at Goodison Park.
Leandro Bacuna had given Villa a first-half lead after some neat interplay with teammate Christian Benteke put him through on goal to slot past Tim Howard.
But Everton fought back in the second half thanks to goals from Steven Naismith and Kevin Mirallas, who curled in a superb 25-yard free-kick with just five minutes left to play.
A visibly disappointed Lambert said in his post-match press conference after full-time:
I thought for 71 minutes we were really comfortable in the game, before the first half we never looked really under threat. First goal was really poor from our point of view second goal I think you can hold your hand up and it’s a world class free-kick, and you can’t do nothing about that,...

Everton manager Roberto Martinez played down his side’s top four hopes after a hard-fought 2-1 win over Aston Villa moved them up to fifth in the Premier League.
Tottenham could only draw with Hull while Manchester United slumped to defeat against Stoke, helping the Toffees stay above their two rivals and move a point beind Liverpool in fourth.
However, Martinez was cautious when asked about his team’s chances of finishing in one of the Champions League places this season.
Speaking in his post-match press interview, the Spaniard replied when asked if the Toffees could finish in the top four:
We understand the ups and downs in the league, we’ve performed really really well all season, we’ll carry on doing the same thing – trying to add as many points as we can and then in the final third of the competition, when you have...

Fulham are closing in on the signing of Everton defender Johnny Heitinga, Sky Sports News understands.
The Dutch international had look set for a move to West Ham earlier in the window but rejected a move to the Hammers. He now though looks set to move to London and Fulham. Heitinga has made more than 100 league appearances for the Toffees since joining in 2009 but has not been part of Roberto Martinez’s plans since coming in as manager and has made just one league appearance this season.
He was believed to be on the verge of a move to Turkish club Galatasary after manager Martinez had said the player was in discussions with the club and Roma were also thought to be interested in the defender. He is now understood though to be in discussions with Fulham and be undergoing a medical.

Manchester City are set to swoop for Porto pair Eliaquim Mangala and Fernando before tonight’s transfer deadline, according to the BBC.
City manager Manuel Pellegrini was cagey about potential new arrivals at the club following his side’s 5-1 win over Tottenham on Wednesday night.
However, both players may join the Premier League leaders today.
France defender Mangala is rated at £35 million and plays at centre-half, an area where the Citizens have been weak at various times this season due to injury to Vincent Kompany.
Fernando meanwhile would add to City’s already-large pool of midfielders.
Mangala has also been tracked by derby rivals Manchester United as well as French champions Paris Saint-Germain.
If the 22-year-old moves to Etihad Stadium, it increases the possibility of Joleon Lescott leaving the club on loan. The centre-half is a target for West Ham United.

Last season’s Fa Cup finalists Manchester City will take on Chelsea in what represents the stand-out tie of the fifth round.
Arsenal will also take on Liverpool at the Emirates in another mouth-watering affair, while holders Wigan Athletic will travel to Cardiff City.
Man City narrowly prevailed over Watford on Saturday to come from behind and win 4-2 and will now take on Chelsea, who saw off Stoke this afternoon.
City will be hoping to keep up their quadruple dream when the two sides meet but now face a huge obstacle to overcome if they are to achieve the historic feat.
The Citizen’s clash with Chelsea will come two or three days before they host Barcelona in the Champions League.
In another blockbuster tie, Arsenal will play host to Liverpool, with Arsene Wenger looking to end his side’s near-decade long wait for a trophy.

Young John Stones blocked Lucas Akins’s goalbound effort early on as hosts Stevenage flew out of the traps and got in Everton faces. The tide quickly turned, however. Chris Day spilled a Kevin Mirallas shot to full Toffees debutant Aiden McGeady and he pulled back for Naismith to tap in on five minutes.
Costa Rica’s left-sided player Bryan Oviedo suffered a suspected broken leg after a quarter of an hour. This prompted a lengthy stoppage whilst he received treatment on the pitch. Everton stalwart Leon Osman replaced Oviedo when he was stretchered off and taken to hospital.
Joel Robles in the Toffees goal turned Luke Freeman’s free kick behind following a training ground routine from Stevenage. Filipe Morais also worked the Everton with another dead ball and Darius Charles almost back-heeled the rebound in from a tight angle.

Everton and Stevenage have already done battle this season with the Toffees needing extra time to advance from their Capital One Cup second round tie.
That first ever meeting proved significant because the winner was Marouane Fellaini’s last goal for Everton before joining Manchester United for a reported £27.5 million. Roberto Martinez has not looked back since, however, and must pit his wits against Graham Westley again – this time at Broadhall Way in the Fa Cup fourth round.
Stevenage forward Luke Freeman gave his team a shock lead at Goodison Park in August. The Toffees must look to other sources for goals when they meet on Saturday teatime as not only is Fellaini gone, but they are without their other scorer from that day Gerard Deulofeu.

Everton’s loan move for Lacina Traore has been cast into doubt and may be scuppered by a potentially serious injury to Radamel Falcao, according to the Express.
The Toffee’s had been hoping to secure a temporary deal to sign Monaco striker Traore this month but a knee injury sustained by Falcao may lead to the French club holding onto the player.
Traore only signed for the ambitious, cash-rich Ligue 1 club from Anzhi Makhachkala in this window in a deal worth £8.6 million.
Monaco had always planned to loan the 23-year-old straight back out, with Everton and their Premier League rivals West Ham believed to be possible destinations.
But with Falcao suffering a suspected Acl injury that could prove to sideline him for the rest of the season and rule him out of the World Cup, manager Claudio Ranieri could have a rethink.

Diego Lugano’s second half header ensured Everton slipped to sixth in the Premier League as Pepe Mel picked up a point in his first game in charge of West Bromwich Albion. The visitors had led at The Hawthorns through a fourth goal of the season for Kevin Mirallas.
Albion started brightly with the controversial Nicolas Anelka feeding strike partner Matej Vydra as the young Czech worked Toffees keeper Tim Howard on eight minutes. Mel’s new managerial magic swiftly subsided, however.
Bryan Oviedo, in the Everton XI in place of the injured Steven Pienaar, fired wide twice in the space of a minute. First he volleyed the second ball from a free kick across goal when Liam Ridgewell’s clearance fell to him.
Oviedo then snatched at a second effort and Mirallas worked Ben Foster in the home goal after coming inside.

Everton are closing in on the loan signing of giant Ivorian centre forward Lacina Traore from Monaco.
The 23-year-old will have a medical with the Toffees ahead of a proposed temporary move from the resurgent French Ligue 1 heavyweights.
Striker Traore, who stands six foot eight inches tall, only joined Monaco from Anzhi Makhachkala earlier this month as the Russian outfit’s own strong financial backing was withdrawn over the summer.
Claudio Ranieri, the Monaco manager, has been looking to loan Traore out as he already has £50 million Colombia hitman Radamel Falcao leading his attack. The Cote d’Azur club also have Martinique-born Emmanuel Riviere and Valere Germain on their books as options up front.
West Ham were strong favourites at one stage to sign Traore and had secured a work permit, but that deal appeared to be scuppered by Roberto Martinez’s interest. Hammers...

Pepe Mel makes his debut in the West Bromwich Albion dugout knowing Everton have won on three of their last seven Premier League trips to The Hawthorns.
The Baggies took three points from their last home game against the Toffees in September 2012. Shane Long, who has been sold to Hull City this winter, and Gareth McAuley were on target in that victory.
When the sides met in the reverse fixture last August neither side could score. Nikica Jelavic led the line for Everton that day, but like Long has left his former employers for the Tigers.
Life goes on for both clubs and talented youngsters spearhead their respective attacks in Saido Berahino and Romeluk Lukaku – who faces the club he spent last season on loan with. Leighton Baines may be the man for Roberto Martinez...
