Beyond just the standard trailer(s) and poster, many films have an entire promotional campaign designed to spark interest. Here’s a look at ten film promotional campaigns which should have stayed on the drawing board.
Selling a movie is not an easy task, and over the years it has not gotten any easier. Promotional campaigns have to be very creative and persistent in order to capture people’s attention amid the sea of advertising we are flooded with on a daily basis. Common tactics include giveaways, publicity stunts, viral marketing techniques, sponsorships, and product tie-ins. Many films try to push the boundaries of traditional promotional campaigns in an effort to get an edge on the competition. Below is a brief look at ten campaigns (in no particular order) which definitely pushed the envelope, but doing so did more harm than good for the films they were trying to promote.

Barns are a-burning, Paul Newman is recommended to Joanne Woodward as ‘a big stud horse’ and Lee Remick oozes sexuality all over Martin Ritt’s CinemaScope screen. William Faulkner may be the literary source, but this tale of ambition in the family of yet another southern Big Daddy is given the faux Tennessee Williams treatment — it’s a grand soap opera with a fistful of great stars having a grand time.

Princess Kate is a pro when it comes to dressing for special occasions, so for Monday’s Commonwealth Day service at Westminster Abbey, the stylish mom chose not only a Commonwealth-born designer in Erdem for her grey coat dress, but she also chose a hat with a nod to the past - it was designed by 90-year-old John Boyd, one of the late Princess Diana's go-to milliners in the 1980s. "She looks so chic and we are fantastically happy," Sarah Marshall, manager of the John Boyd boutique in London's Knightsbridge, tells People. The royal mom was seen entering the...

Animal House, Revenge of the Nerds, Old School—all classic college comedies that inspired generations of devoted fraternity idiots. But Neighbors, the summer blockbuster that pitted Zac Efron’s fun-loving Greeks against the yuppie couple next door—Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne—realized something new and important: a woman—a mother, even—can be just as outrageously funny and asinine as a dude. When the loud fraternity parties into the night and leaves condoms for the neighbors’ darling baby to play with, Byrne’s Kelly proves to be just as formidable as the guys in the tit-for-tat war that ensues.

Nudity on-screen is no new thing, obviously. Way back in 1934, Tarzan and His Mate engaged in a very lusty, full-on naked swim, which shocked Depression era audiences everywhere. But that’s the thing, nudity in movies is usually about sex. Not so when comedic actors do it. They use their un-yoga’d, un-tanned, non-waxed naked bodies as a tool for being funnier. Take Jason Segel in Finding Sarah Marshall. As his girlfriend dumped him, he stood a thousand percent nude — and limp – in his apartment (for what felt like hours), and we howled. When Frank the Tank (Will Ferrell) went streaking in Old School, his exposed full moon wasn’t about being hot, it was about being hilarious.

The high-school detective drama is the centre of a TV talent vortex linking Freaks And Geeks, Party Down, Gossip Girl and more. But will a big-screen reunion solve its many outstanding mysteries?
Ah, Veronica Mars, how you linger in the memory after all these years. Can it really be seven years since I came back to Los Angeles after a month in England, ready to savour four spicy, bitchy, twisty new episodes of hard-boiled high-school noir on DVR, only to discover that the Paul Rudd-as-mean-jerky-rock star episode had been obliterated by extended news coverage of the ferocious Griffith Park fire of May 2007? Jet-lagged and exhausted as I was, I knelt down and grasped my skull in anguish right there in front of the telly, bathed in the apocalyptic orange flames. It was a very Veronica moment.
This show really put you through it sometimes, both within the drama and without.

The British actress was a familiar face on TV and on Broadway during the 1950s and early ’60s, earning a Tony nom for her supporting role in 1959’s Goodbye, Charlie. Sarah Marshall died Saturday of cancer in Los Angeles. She was 80. Marshall appeared on dozens of TV shows from the mid-’50 through the mid-’90s, including such popular series as Thriller, Alfred Hitchcock Presents, Get Smart, Daniel Boone, Three’s Company and Cheers. She also was a regular on the 1979 CBS comedy Miss Winslow & Son and appeared in the 1980 miniseries Scruples. But Marshall is perhaps best known to American TV audiences for starring roles on episodes of The Twilight Zone (the worried mother in “Little Girl Lost”) and Star Trek (the disease-curing scientist an ex-flame of Capt. Kirk in “The Deadly Years”).

If you ever need to see a baby chewing on a condom, Zac Efron doing a DeNiro impression and Seth Rogen getting launched through an office plasterboard ceiling, congratulations! You win today, the day that the (Nsfw) first trailer spot for "Neighbors" debuted on MTV News.
From director Nicholas Stoller (we see your scratched-up DVD of "Forgetting Sarah Marshall" over there, and we know you're gonna be into this), "Neighbors" looks to be a hilarious detailing of the battle between Boring Adults Mac and Kelly Radner (Rogen and Rose Byrne) and the brothers of Delta Psi and their fearless leader, Shirtless Zac Efron when the Radners suddenly find themselves living next door to Animal House. Ruh-roh.
This is clearly the role Zac Efron's torso was born to play: He gets to grill, he gets to prank (yeah, about Rogen getting popped through his office's ceiling...), he gets to bro out to his heart's content.

Are you a good witch, or a bad witch? Or, more accurately, do you prefer a good witch or a bad witch? That's the question we're asking today on this very special Ladies of "Oz the Great and Powerful" edition of NextMovie's Eff, Marry, Kill.
It would appear that beauty and magic have a direct correlation because Mila Kunis, Rachel Weisz and Michelle Williams, all certified Gorgeous Ladies, portray the three witches of Oz in the new flick, due in theaters March 8. Lovely though they all may be, there can only be one good witch — and only one you choose to bring home to Mom in a game of Eff, Marry, Kill, good witch or not so good.
So who will it be? Do you marry the lady who comes and goes by bubble? Have a soft spot for the witch in red? Are you enchanted by Oz's third witch?...

Travel company Inspiring Journeys has launched a series of webisodes off the back of its ‘Kakadu Cab’ campaign.
The experiential campaign, which launched in August, gave unwitting taxi passengers 15 seconds to decide whether to go on to their intended destination – or be taken to Kakadu to experience one of Inspiring Journeys’ holiday packages.
Four couples took up the offer, and their experiences documented in four short films.
The intro video:

Christine’s journey

The Kakadu Cab campaign is being soft launched this week, with a bigger PR and social media push scheduled for early next year, timed with the launch of Inspiring Journeys’ 2013 brochure.

Today is author Bram Stoker’s birthday. The man who wrote Dracula would be 165 years old today, if he had the same affliction he gave his most famous character. In honor of Stoker’s birthday, we’ve found some of the best spoofs, parodies, and satires on Dracula. Because dammit, birthdays should be fun!

The most recent resurrection didn’t go according to plan. Instead of blood, ketchup was used. Thus, this incarnation of Duckula was a vegetarian who was more interested in becoming a star than in starting blood wards.

If you took a twee indie romantic comedy, injected it with a little hard-edged violence and spliced in dynamic car footage culled from a Top Gear ‘best of’ compilation, the result would resemble something close to Hit and Run.

The 29-year-old actress reportedly ended up in a hairy situation on Sunday after getting trapped in the elevator of a building in Manhattan's West Village. Per the New York Post, luckily Kunis and 10 other people with her were quickly rescued by the New York Fire Department. An Nyfd spokesperson confirms to E! However, the spokesperson could not confirm if the Black Swan actress was among those who waited patiently for about 45 minutes while emergency responders worked to extract...

In all honesty, the only item I would point you toward this week with any level of seriousness is Margaret, but more on that in a second. Probably even more important is the 50% off sale going on over at Barnes and Noble where the majority of their in-stock Criterion Collection titles are all 50% off. I've taken advantage of this sale in the past and if you'd like to see if anything meets your approval just click here to browse their selection. If you're wondering how much money you can save, it's different depending on the title. For example, the recently released Samurai Trilogy is $34.99 at Barnes right now while it's $47.96 at Amazon. Charlie Chaplin's The Gold Rush is $19.99 at Barnes and $28.95 at Amazon. One of my all-time favorites, Breathless, is $19.99 at Barnes and $23.98 at Amazon and The Seven Samurai is $24.99 at Barnes and $34.95 at Amazon. So, yes, it's a deal.

Guys, today is the day Magic Mike comes out and changes our lives forever. Okay probably not, but we do get to see Channing Tatum strip on the big screen, and that still feels pretty important. Despite the way everyone woman (and, let’s be honest, man) is foaming at the mouth to see Alex Pettyfer and the gang take if off this weekend, it turns out Magic Mike is only the most recent in a long line of awkward, dramatic, sexy, humiliating moments in male movie nudity. From Jason Segel‘s weepy reveal in Saving Sarah Marshall to basically every movie Ewan McGregor has ever done, enjoy what we consider to be the top 10 moments in cinematic dude nakedness. Though…aren’t they all pretty excellent? Warning: There will be butts.

There was the Texts From Hillary meme, to which the secretary of ssate herself contributed. Jason Segel also said he'd love to co-star with her in a movie, telling Us Weekly in March, "I just feel like she would be good at comedy. I think you can feel it from a mile away."
Segel has also joked in the past that Clinton is the mother on "How I Met Your Mother."
Alas, Secretary Clinton is not ready to commit anytime soon. Segel told Jimmy Fallon last week on "Late Night" that she sent him a thanks, but no thanks note -- unless he meets her demands (like a real star).
Politico obtained the note, which reads: "I was delighted to read about your interest in sharing the big screen with me. As you can imagine, I am a little occupied at the moment,...

While most people would assume that Hillary Clinton would have tons of time on her hands with her menial job as Secretary of State, it turns out she's a pretty busy lady, a fact Jason Segel had to learn the hard way.
The "Five-Year Engagement" star told Us Weekly of the former First Lady, "I just feel like she would be good at comedy. I think you can feel it from a mile away."
Despite the actor's praise of Clinton, including his long running joke that she is the unseen matriarch on his hit show, "How I Met Your Mother," it looks like Hillary won't come on board for "Sarah Marshall 2: This Time It's Personal."
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Clinton caught wind of Segel's praise and, like any woman trying to keep from falling prey to the actor's charms, declined his invitation.

U.S. Secretary of State Hilary Clinton has turned down the chance to play actor Jason Segel's mum on hit TV comedy How I Met Your Mother.
The Forgetting Sarah Marshall star publicly appealed to Clinton to play his on-screen character Marshall Eriksen's mother during a March interview, but the busy politician has politely declined the offer, although she admits she fully intends on starring opposite the funnyman in the future when her schedule dies down.
Internet blog Politico has obtained a copy of Clinton's rejection letter, which reads, "I was delighted to read about your interest in sharing the big screen with me. As you can imagine, I am a little occupied at the moment, but perhaps someday I can help you forget Sarah Marshall... again.
"My only condition is that there be Muppets involved, and that is non-negotiable. In the meantime, you have my best wishes for continued success with your career."
Segel revived the Muppets for last year's hit family film.

Jason Segel will have to start courting another leading lady. After mentioning that he would like to work with Hillary Clinton, the Five-Year Engagement star just received a “Dear Jason” letter from the Secretary of State herself (courtesy of Politico). Click through to see how the most powerful woman in the world gave Segel the gentle brush-off and which co-star she won’t work without (hint: it’s not Bill).

Hillary Clinton may be down with texting and letting loose in Cartegena nightclubs, but she's not ready for her big-screen debut -- at least not yet.
Jason Segel, who stars in TV's "How I Met Your Mother," said last week that the secretary of state turned down his offer to work with him on screen.
"Everyone always asks me, like on a red carpet or wherever, 'Who is the mother?'" Segel said while appearing on "Late Night With Jimmy Fallon" Thursday, referring to the mystery identity of the eponymous matriarch of his hit show. "I always say Hillary Clinton as a joke."
Apparently, Clinton paid attention to his repeated references.
"I got a letter in the mail," Segel told Fallon. "I got a rejection letter from Hillary Clinton."
On Monday, Politico obtained Clinton's note to Segel, which comically references his past roles in "The Muppets" and "Forgetting Sarah Marshall.

One night, nearly two decades ago, Nicholas Stoller, at that time a freshman at Harvard, dragged his mattress out of his room and into the room of his suitemate. Both young men had long-distance high school girlfriends whom they missed terribly, and they'd decided to have a sleepover to bond over their shared state of longing. During the sleepover, the suitemate decided to put on his prom song, “Always” by the English synthpop duo Erasure. The two listened as a ghostly plucking of strings filled the room, accompanied by a faint, mournful moaning, then a pulsing beat and quirky, digital squiggles of synthesizer funk. And soon, a high-pitched male voice, wavering and rising with emotion, swelling at the chorus: Always/I want to be with you/and make believe with you/and live in harmony harmony oh love. The song played, and they both cried.
Stoller laughs as he tells this story.

Maybe you fell in love with Jason Segel when he was Nick on Freaks and Geeks. Maybe you found him as Alyson Hannigan’s other half on How I Met Your Mother. Perhaps it took his perfect bromance with our other true love Paul Rudd in I Love You, Man. The Muppets might have been your thing, or his side-clutching “Kemper-pedic” mattress ad on SNL. Seriously, if none of those won you over, you have a cold, dead heart — and you are probably the studio head who told him to lose 35 lbs for The Five-Year Engagement.

The Five-Year Engagement is cut from the same cloth as 2008′s Forgetting Sarah Marshall and shares many of the elements that made that film successful. It was co-written by Sarah Marshall writer/star Jason Segel and Nicholas Stoller (who directed both Fsm and this movie), and has a cast that effortlessly embodies the movie’s characters. Along with a certain sweetness that permeates both films, [...]

The team that forgot Sarah Marshall and got him to The Greek isn't going to be quite as prompt as they postpone Jason Segel and Emily Blunt's nuptials during the course of "The Five-Year Engagement."
This trying time follows the cute couple while their relationship endures the strain of one seriously delayed wedding. As relatives pass away and suitors wait in the wings, these two just might find their love strengthened all the more.
1. Segel, Chris Parnell and Brian Posehn mine a rich vein of d**k humor.
2. The 85-year-old engagement.
3. How do you say "sic 'em" in Welsh?
4. Wedding planning devolves into a spinning dreidel of confusion.
5. Alison Brie shoots down this dude's advances like a French Foreign Legion firing squad.

Jason Segel and Nick Stoller first met up on the Judd Apatow college comedy TV series “Undeclared” just over a decade ago. The show was far from the first attempt to tackle the freshman college experience, but it was one of the more fresh and realistic, a warts-and-all portrayal of the often difficult transition from childhood to the real word.
The idea might have been a bit ahead of its time initially, but in recent years audiences are finally starting to tire of cookie cutter Hollywood comedies. After Apatow broke out with “The 40-Year-Old Virgin” and “Knocked Up,” he helped many of his past collaborators get their own projects going as a producer. Segel and Stoller’s first feature collaboration, the 2008 sleeper hit “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” took audiences by surprise for many reasons. It continued the wave of hard-r comedies finally penetrating the mainstream, but also broke barriers with its unapologetic male full-frontal scene.

Directed by Craig Moss, the man behind The 41 Year Old Virgin Who Knocked-Up Sarah Marshall and Felt Superbad About It, Breaking Wind: Part 1 is, like Vampires Suck before it, a spoof of the blockbuster Twilight franchise and follows Bella – who finds herself the object of everyone’s affection including Edward Colon, Jacob the overweight but girthy werewolf and Little Edward the three foot six pint sized version of Edward. If that wasn’t enough to worry about, Bella and the gang soon realise that an army of freshly turned vampires (Noobs) are making their way down from Seattle to Forks to kill Bella after tracking her scent from her only copy of ‘Ebony Thunder’ magazine. It premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival earlier this week, and it's only a week out from its national release, but The Five-Year Engagement, starring Jason Segel and Emily Blunt, has a new red band trailer out. Five-Year Engagement reunites Forgetting Sarah Marshall's director Nicholas Stoller with Segel — the pair once again collaborated on the script. And with Judd Apatow on board as co-producer, raunchy hijinks are a given. In the film, Segel and Blunt play Tom and Violet, a San Francisco couple who put their wedding on hold after Blunt gets a job offer in another state. Blunt appears to be her usual charming self, with Segel resuming his well-practiced everyman role. There's an interesting wrinkle, though: instead of the birthday suit of Sarah Marshall, here we get Segel in a pink bunny suit, along with some questionable facial-hair choices. In preparing for the film, [...]...

In 2007, Jason Segel starred in "Forgetting Sarah Marshall," and he not only showed the world that he could be a leading man, but he also famously showed the world his nether regions. Unfortunately, for fans hoping to catch another full-frontal glimpse of Segel, it looks like that was a one-time engagement.
Despite rumors that Segel's latest film, "The Five-Year Engagement," would feature similar full-frontal exposure, the scene -- which was actually Segel's idea -- was ultimately cut from the film.
"I thought of it at the time as an homage to 'Sarah Marshall,' but then when we saw it, it just seemed gratuitous," said Segel at the world premiere of "The Five-Year Engagement" at the Tribeca Film Festival Wednesday night. "There's no need for it. People already know what it looks like, and we also couldn't find a lens that was wide enough."

The past six months have been a whirlwind for Jason Segel. In November he successfully revived a long-dormant franchise with “The Muppets." Last month, his semi-dramatic turn in the Duplass Brothers’ “Jeff, Who Lives at Home” was released to strong critical praise. And now he’s on the verge of releasing a third team-up with co-writer/director Nicholas Stoller, “The Five-Year Engagement.” All the while continuing to work on his long-running sitcom “How I Met Your Mother.”
Despite having spoken with Segel multiple times over the past year, there never seems to be a shortage of projects on the horizon to discuss. This weekend The Playlist sat down with Segel at the press event for “Five-Year Engagement.” We’ll have more on 'Five-Year' in the coming weeks, but first we have an update on the seemingly endless stream of projects Segel is attached to.

While the end of April 2011 did deliver a blockbuster with Fast Five, the time period traditionally serves as an opportunity to clear out some modest movies ahead of the beginning of Summer. Since late April 2012's most ambitious movies are a Nicolas Sparks adaptation, a Judd Apatow production and an Aardman Animation flick, it seems like late April 2012 fits more in the traditional model. April 20 - Zac Efron Vs. Steve Harvey Vs. ChimpsOn paper, at least, The Lucky One seems to have the most going for it among the three movies opening nationwide on April 20. Similar to Dear John, it's a Nicolas Sparks romance that has a hunky young guy spend at least some time in the military. Dear John opened to $30.5 million in February 2010 on its way to over $80 million. The Lucky One probably won't reach either of those numbers*Zac Efron is no Channing Tatum (his last romantic movie,...

From the director who brought you The 41 Year Old Virgin Who Knocked Up Sarah Marshall And Felt Superbad About It, comes a wildly funny spoof of the blockbuster Twilight franchise, Breaking Wind – which is released on DVD today, offers some light relief to all those suffering from Twilight fatigue.
Breaking Wind follows Bella, who finds herself as the object of everyone’s affections: from an eerily Pattinson-esque Edward, Jacob the overweight but girthy werewolf, to Edward’s pint-sized (but oddly sinister) miniature alter ego Little Edward. Raunchy hilarity ensues when Bella’s life is threatened by the vengeful Victoria and her gang of blood sucking Vampire ‘Noobs’, and Edward and Jacob must put aside their differences to save her. Again.
Brought to you by Revolver Entertainment, directed by Craig Moss and starring Heather Ann Davis, Danny Trejo, Eric Callero, Emma Bell and Frank Pacheco, this tongue-in-cheek Twilight parody will appeal to Twi-hards and haters alike.

There wasn’t a whole lot on offer last week with Hunger Games unequivocally eclipsing all the other releases. It’s received fairly unanimously positive reviews and looks like being the first box-office smash of the summer. Meanwhile both The Kid With a Bike and Wild Bill have received their own fair share of plaudits and would appear to be well worth seeking out.
This time out though there’s a wide range of releases hitting the screens ranging from big-budget mythological blockbuster and animated piracy adventure to hard-hitting prison documentary and a ghastly looking vampire spoof.
If you want to check to see if any of these films are playing near you, you can visit Find Any Film and they’ll be able to help.

In 2008, director Nicholas Stoller and producer Rodney Rothman made an incredible splash with the R-rated comedy Forgetting Sarah Marshall. The film was the perfect mix of heart and raunch, and, most importantly, it was hilarious. They then followed up in 2010 with Get Him To The Greek, a spin-off from Sarah Marshall that kept both critics and audiences laughing. Now they.re just about ready to make you howl again with their third movie together. Last year, during filming for the upcoming “Five Year Engagement” The Playlist joined a group of press to visit the production on one of its more beautiful locations, a vineyard in northern California. While there, we had the opportunity to sit down with the film’s impressive ensemble cast, as well as get a sneak peek as their characters attended an engagement party for leads Tom and Violet (played by Jason Segel and Emily Blunt). Following are a few hints on what to expect from Nicholas Stoller’s third directorial effort when it premieres at Tribeca Film Festival this spring, before arriving in theatres on April 27th.
'Engagement' is Stoller and collaborator Jason Segel's "evolution as a team."
After writing together on "Forgetting Sarah Marshall" and "Get Him to the Greek" (amongst others), Stoller and Segel are stepping away from their previous films, which were heavy with pop and Hollywood culture references.

He has written and starred in a line of successful comedies, yet little prepared him for meeting Kermit and Miss Piggy
When I meet him, in the cavernous La warehouse that houses the sets for the enormously popular Fox sitcom How I Met Your Mother, Jason Segel is tired. It's understandable: he spent most of last night reshooting scenes from one of his three forthcoming films. Now he must get into the character of Marshall Eriksen, whom he's played throughout seven series of the Emmy Award-winning sitcom and invested with the trademark sweetness that can make even the creepiest and neediest characters seem lovable. We take advantage of a break in filming that has left Studio 22 deserted to settle down in a beat-up couch.

Funnyman Jason Segel rewarded a fan who serenaded him on YouTube.com by taking her as his date to an awards show.
Chelsea Gill became a hit on the web after writing a song for the actor, begging him to "just have a drink with me before this year ends".
In the tune, Gill sings, "Have a drink with me, oh Mr. Segel can't you see/ I'm trying so hard to impress, you're so f**king hot but I digress."
Segel was so impressed with her efforts, he invited Gill and her sister to accompany him to the Chicago Film Critics Association awards in Illinois on Saturday.
The How I Met Your Mother star accepted the Commedia Extraordinaire Award, and he was delighted to share his triumph with his biggest fan.
In posts on Twitter.com, he writes, "I am honoured to get comedian of the year and screenwriter. (Director) Nick Stoller shares this with me.
