In the opening sequence of Sophie Hyde’s riveting “Good Luck to You, Leo Grande,” a suave young man (Daryl McCormack) steps out of an ice cream parlor, catches a mint candy in his mouth, and swings around a street pole like a hipster Gene Kelly. The Irishman is confidently cool — and not quite himself. He’s getting into character as Leo Grande, a charming sex worker who sells the Leo Grande Fantasy: a “service,” he calls it, where he gives paying customers exactly what they need, be it physical release, conversation or, for one client, dressing like a cat. But Katy Brand’s screenplay is only focused on Leo’s interactions with one customer: Nancy (Emma Thompson), a widowed religious studies teacher pacing a blandly attractive hotel room, panicked that she’s made a mistake. What’s her fantasy, Leo asks. Nancy chokes on her own desires. “To have sex?...

The Academy Award-nominated animated feature “Wolfwalkers,” from Kilkenny-based studio Cartoon Saloon, has won Best Film at the Irish Film and Television Awards this evening.
It is the second time an animated feature has won in the category, the first being Cartoon Saloon’s “Song of the Sea” in 2015.
“Avengers: Endgame” star Josh Brolin presented the award for Best Film. “My own story with Ireland is that at 20 years old I was in Dublin, and I blindly walked into a theatre on a movie called ‘My Left Foot,’ and left a changed man,” he recalled. “With the rest of my very little money that same trip, I saw the Cusack’s do ‘The Three Sisters’ at the Gate Theatre and was again changed. I also read ‘A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man’ that same trip. Ireland has had a massive impact on me, so I just wanted to...

“Normal People,” Hulu’s 12-part adaptation of Sally Rooney’s 2018 bestselling novel about two teenagers navigating complicated relationships in modern-day Ireland, isn’t covered in wall-to-wall music and there’s a reason for that. Director Lenny Abrahamson (of “Room” fame) “is much more interested in score working as a reaction to what just happened rather than score telling you what you need to know,” says Steve Fanagan, sound designer and supervising sound editor. With this in mind, when something audible does come into the picture — be it song, score or sound design — it’s not a crutch to rely on for emoting, but rather a part of the storytelling.
“Normal People,” which premieres tonight, was adapted for the small screen by Rooney with the help of Alice Birch and Mark O’Rowe. A classic love story told from the formative high school to college years, the plot is simple — the series...

Having won an Ifta for their work on 'Albert Nobbs', Ardmore Sound and Screen Scene's Niall Brady and Steve Fanagan discuss the challenges they faced on helping bring the sound of 19th Century Dublin to Glenn Close's latest movie. Last year, that team was acknowledged with an Emmy award nomination for their work on the first season of 'Game of Thrones'. However, it's their most recently screened work - on Glenn Close's Dublin hotel-set 'Albert Nobbs' - that has had the film and TV industry singing their praises.
