The highly-anticipated second season of “Peacemaker” has been delayed, DC co-ceo James Gunn revealed during a presentation on the upcoming Dcu slate that TheWrap attended along with a small group of reporters.
Gunn said that he’s been too busy writing a new “Superman” movie and the upcoming animated DC series “Creature Commandos” and, as a result, “Peacemaker” Season 2 got pushed. But not to worry — a previously announced spinoff based on Viola Davis’ Amanda Waller will help kick off a new era of Dcu storytelling.
“Viola is still playing Waller and she has Team Peacemaker in this,” Gunn noted. “This is really a continuation from Peacemaker.”
“Waller” will be written by Christal Henry (“Watchmen”) and Jeremy Carver (“Doom Patrol”) and executive produced by Gunn and Safran.

When director James Gunn took on a soft reboot of The Suicide Squad, he brought in some familiar members, some less familiar characters, and one who was, at best, tangential to the team in the comics. Yet, with a keen eye for casting, the director knew exactly who would make Peacemaker work despite his odd Pat Boyette-designed costume and weird rationale provided by co-creator Joe Gill. Christopher Smith loved peace so much he would violently assure it.
In the form of former pro wrestler turned actor John Cena, the character played it so straight that he was hysterical in an already gonzo film. Apparently, Gunn was so enchanted with the performance that he idly began writing a backstory miniseries and when he mentioned it to producing partner Peter Safran, he was encouraged to sell it. HBO Max snapped it up and it is now available on Blu-ray from Hob Home Entertainment.

The story explores the origins of Christopher Smith (Cena) aka Peacemaker from the 2021 film The Suicide Squad. He's a compellingly vainglorious man who believes in peace at any cost, no matter how many people he has to kill to get it. Other characters include A.R.G.U.S. agents John Economos (Agee) and Emilia Harcourt (Holland), sociopathic Adrian Chase (Stroma) aka Vigilante, and Auggie Smith (Patrick), Peacemaker's racist father.Read More…...

Auggie Smith’s menacing racism somehow gets taken to the next level pays off in Peacemaker episode 7, as Chris’s terrible dad re-dons his White Dragon costume and gets to work. But…the White Dragon of Peacemaker is fairly different from the White Dragon in the comics. And for that matter, so is Peacemaker’s father. What are we talking about? Let’s break it down.
Nazis. I Hate These Guys.
In the comics, Christopher Smith was born in Austria to an American mother, Elizabeth Lewis, and a respectable German expat businessman father, Wolfgang Schmidt. Except he wasn’t respectable at all. He was Nazi garbage, the former head of a Polish concentration camp who fled when Germany’s loss became clear. Peacemaker Episode 7
There’s catharsis and then there’s “shooting one’s white supremacist supervillain father in the head with a Nazi-era luger pistol” catharthis. “Stop Dragon My Heart Around”, the penultimate episode of Peacemaker season 1 opts for the latter and is all the better for it.
“Stop Dragon My Heart Around” is a little strange as far as penultimate episodes go. Part of it is spent wrapping up Chris Smith’s struggles with his father in spectacular fashion while the other part deals with setting up the climactic battle against the Butterflies in the finale to come. As such, the episode is a bit tonally confused and relegates what should be a series highlight to a miniboss battle on the way to the big one. Still, that miniboss battle is so thrilling and so rich that this ultimately feels like 40 minutes (the show’s...

"God bless you."
You know, when Robert Patrick says "God bless you," it feels pretty damn good. The actor couldn't be more unsettling in "Peacemaker," playing the titular character's horrifying father, Auggie Smith (Aka The White Dragon). But during a recent interview about James Gunn's HBO Max show, he was a well-spoken delight.
Patrick portrays pure evil in the show, which is the story of a bad guy facing off against someone even worse. For the actor, the gulf between his real-life personality and the vile character he's playing actually made it easier to tap into the role -- and he's clearly a...

Peacemaker Episode 5
Music has obviously played quite a big role for Peacemaker thus far. Along with scoring the brilliant opening credits sequence (which again: cannot be praised enough), Peacemaker’s preferred glam metal has served as a spiritual accompaniment, giving the show a thrashing, playful spirit. It’s in this week’s episode, “Monkey Dory”, however, that the Peacemaker soundtrack goes from tone-setter to plot-driver…with mixed results.
In addition to a great taste in music, one thing that Peacemaker showrunner James Gunn excels at is turning the group dynamics of a found family into his own personal storytelling playground. Taking familial bickering and transforming it into begrudging familial family-ing has been a hallmark of Gunn’s previous superhero projects like Guardians of the Galaxy, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, and The Suicide Squad. Thanks to a profound respect and appreciation for his characters,...

John Cena’s Peacemaker shows off his moves in the opening credits sequence for the newly released HBO Max series.

Peacemaker, produced by Peter Safran and starring Cena in the title role, explores the continuing story of the character in the aftermath of Gunn’s 2021 DC film The Suicide Squad. It’s about a man who believes in peace at any cost, no matter how many people he has to kill to get it.

Superhero movies and TV series have become the “Law & Order” franchise of today: A place where every actor on the vast spectrum of recognizability will almost certainly end up at one point or another. And despite admitting to not being a comics person before her role on HBO Max’s “Peacemaker,” Danielle Brooks recognized that paradigm shift, and started looking for roles that she might be right for if the comic was ever adapted, according to a new interview with Variety.
“I used to have a list. I started doing research before getting this part of, like, if I were to ever be asked which [comic book] characters I could play, who do I actually look like?” Brooks said. “There are a few that look like me, actually, but when they’re reflected on TV or film, they change them completely. Their look does not reflect what you see in the comics.

HBO Max is starting the year as it means to continue, by entertaining viewers with the release of a red-band trailer for the John Cena–starring “Peacemaker” series.
After first playing the role of the nationalist, peace-loving superhero willing to kill as many people as it takes to promote peace in director James Gunn’s “The Suicide Squad,” Cena returns to the character — and Gunn — for Gunn’s eight-episode series for the streamer which debuts January 13. Now the series focuses on Peacemaker and a ragtag team looking to keep the world a safer place, even if sometimes they cause a little damage of their own doing it. And some of that damage, as we see in the trailer, even comes courtesy of Peacemaker’s sidekick, a bald eagle.
