It's the most expensive movie A24 has ever made and is currently the talk of the industry. But what makes it so special?
The plot
The movie is set in the near future where a third term president is in charge of America. During his time in office, the country has become increasingly divided. Now it's a race against time as a group of heroic journalists desperately try to reach the White House before rebel forces do. Will they make it in time? Or is America doomed?
Against this backdrop, the film explores questions such as what it really means to be a US citizen.
It's an action flick, but so much more. Amidst the drama, there are deeper layers of meaning and questions for philosophical cinephiles to ponder. It's also been praised for its stunning scenery, so there really is something for everyone.
Who's starring in it ?

This article contains major spoilers for Civil War (2024)
From the vastly untapped and underrated vision of Alex Garland comes yet another Oscar-winning project. Civil War stands out as an exceptionally well-drawn-out feature that presents itself as a thesis on the modern world, its ghastly conflicts, and the ultimate breakdown of social order. But through the mind-bending craft of actors like Jesse Plemons, the conflict finds a mouthpiece. Plemons not only acts his part but embodies the evil that permeates throughout the storyline.
Civil War [Credit: A24]As Civil War rages in theaters, Jesse Plemons becomes a talking point in conversations among critics, audiences, and niche fan circles for a performance that makes him just as much a reflection of reality as an actor of massive creative instinct.

Plot: In the United States, amid a brutal civil war, a team of journalists drive from New York to Washington D.C, where they’ve been promised an interview with the president.
Review: A24 is the only movie studio I know of that’s picked up a cult following of its own. Their brand has become one of the most trusted among discerning film fans, delivering a slew of interesting, provocative movies that fit all genres. In some ways, they are a throwback to an older kind of filmmaking in that they’ve never focused on chasing franchises and have always been filmmaker-focused. They’ve always taken risks, and it’s paid off more than it hasn’t. However, their latest film, Civil War, is arguably their riskiest movie, sporting their biggest budget (north of $50 million) and subject matter that could be seen as a bit of a political powder keg.

When Stephen McKinley Henderson appears on screen, you always know you’re in good hands. The presence of the beloved character actor all but guarantees that he’s going to pass on some eye-opening wisdom and make you feel something, which explains why his two-time co-star Cailee Spaeny considers him the Yoda-like figure in her life. The two Missouri natives previously worked together on Alex Garland’s gem of a sci-fi miniseries, Devs, and now they’ve reunited on the big screen in the English filmmaker’s critically acclaimed anti-war thriller, Civil War.
Civil War, which is Henderson’s fifth A24 collaboration, begins in the near future, as secessionists are on the verge of seizing the White House from its dictatorial, third-term president (Nick Offerman). Reuters war photographer Lee Smith (Kirsten Dunst) and her reporting partner, Joel (Wagner Moura), intend to chronicle the events as they unfold from New...

Writer/director Alex Garland explored the near future in two of his previous three features. In Ex MacHina he pondered the possibilities of emerging technology and the rise of sentient artificial beings. Then in Annihilation, he tackled the results of alien contact and the impact on the ecology and the military response to it. With this new film, Garland goes “back to the future”, though it’s not centuries ahead, but rather a time that could be “just around the corner”, spawned from events happening right now. And it’s not gizmos or ETs that propel the cautionary fable. No, it’s the dangers of hatred and intolerance that divide the country and lead to a Civil War. It’s not the first time, but it could be the last…

Get ready to play a very different kind of Easter egg hunt with the new "Star Wars" series "The Acolyte" (watch the trailer here). Leslye Headland's upcoming series takes place 100 years before "Star Wars: Episode I -- The Phantom Menace," which should come as a soothing balm to those who've been waiting for the franchise to move far (far) away from the Skywalker Saga and explore other periods of "Star Wars" history in live-action. That being the case, the real test here won't be seeing how many references or nods to other "Star Wars" projects you can spot; it will be figuring out where you've previously seen the show's crackerjack actors.
With the exceptions of "The Matrix" icon Carrie-Anne Moss and up-and-coming whipper-snappers Amandla Stenberg ("Bodies Bodies Bodies") and Dafne Keen ("His Dark Materials"), much of the "Acolyte" cast is composed of "Hey, I know them!" type character actors.

The Acolyte’s Vernestra Rwoh Has ‘Been Through Some Shit’ After The High Republic Novels – Exclusive
For the most part, The Acolyte is set to be an entirely new Star Wars experience. It’s set in an unexplored era, 100 years prior to The Phantom Menace; it has an entirely new cast of Jedi; its mystery plot is being kept tightly under wraps. But for fans of The High Republic novels – set 100 years before The Acolyte – there’ll be a familiar face. Rebecca Henderson is playing Vernestra Rwoh – a High Republic character who, in the books, is a prodigious young Jedi Knight who passed the trials at 15, and soon finds herself facing the threat of the marauding Nihil. In The Acolyte, the green-skinned Mirialan is now 116 years old – and a fully-fledged Jedi Master based in the temple on Coruscant.
The Acolyte creator Leslye Headland is thrilled to have Rwoh be part of her series. “I absolutely love Vernestra. You can tell, because I cast my wife,” she laughs while speaking to Empire.

Jonathan Majors was sentenced Monday to a 52-week domestic-abuse prevention program after being convicted in December of recklessly assaulting and harassing his ex-girlfriend Grace Jabbari.
The former Marvel actor was solemn during proceedings, declining to make a statement. Judge Michael Gaffey noted that “jail is not necessary” for the misdemeanor domestic violence offense, but said Majors is expected to complete the intensive course in person. He is also barred from owning or applying for a license to obtain a firearm.
Jabbari was granted a full order of protection against Majors.

Prince of Persia is an iconic franchise of titles that has everything a hack-and-slash action-adventure game set in a distant past should contain. Its gameplay loop contains time-traveling abilities, parkour, and fluid combat. It was incredibly satisfying, and it has aged very gracefully.
Now, just one day after April Fool’s Day, the next game in the popular franchise is rumored to have been in development for four years and is announced to be coming to Early Access later this year. While it may be good news, some skeptical fans on social media don’t seem to care and are convinced that the title will not perform well.

Stephen McKinley Henderson played Thufir Hawat in Dune, but sadly, the Mentat adviser to House Atreides was nowhere to be found in Dune: Part Two.
The actor did shoot scenes for Dune: Part Two, but they wound up on the cutting room floor, which director Denis Villeneuve has said was one of the most painful choices he had to make. However, Henderson wasn’t too bothered. “I shot stuff for them and had a great time with Denis and Austin Butler,” Henderson told Entertainment Weekly. “I got to have a nice lunch with Christopher Walken. It was a great thing to be a part of, and I understand it comes with the territory. Denis had to do the film that he had to do. So I just love being a part of it. No regrets.“

Henderson, Indira Varma, Rufus Sewell and Olivia Williams attend a Hampstead dinner party that takes a dark turn in a play-like sendup that could go harder
There are echoes of Carnage and Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? in this satire of north London liberals. It’s an original script but has the staginess of a filmed play, set almost entirely in one location: a big fancy house in Hampstead where two uber-successful couples in their 50s are chattering over dinner. I wasn’t totally convinced by the dialogue; some of the lines aren’t especially clever or witty given that this is a bunch of highly intelligent over-achievers. Not enough sparks were flying.
What the movie does have going for it is a terrific performance by Shirley Henderson as brittle, nervy Sarah, the owner of said fancy Hampstead house, along with her husband Tom (Alan Tudyk). He’s a...

Neil Breen, the independent American filmmaker and actor, is popular for his peculiar filmmaking. He has written, directed, produced, and starred in six theatrical feature films to date and has garnered a following that likes his low budget but interesting films. Breen usually uses stock footage in his films, and it’s been going on ever since he started producing the films.
The latest movie from Neil Breen, Cade: The Tortured Crossing, was released last year, and it sincerely looks like the 1980s full-motion video (Fmv) game because of how much it relies on Shutterstock images for the backdrops. Ubisoft is one of the most well-known names in the video game industry, and the toxic work culture and crunch hours are nothing new in the industry, as there have been several instances where employees have reported this. Ubisoft is currently working on its free-to-play shooter xDefiant, and the game has been delayed multiple times due to different issues.
The main reason behind this seems to be a group of executives and directors working on the title, as reported by Insider Gaming’s Tom Henderson. He also stated that the company has a toxic work culture, among other things, that has driven employees to part ways, and the statements have now been corroborated by a former Ubisoft developer who left the job due to these issues.

Ubisoft has earned a reputation for being one of the most controversial Aaa studios, whether it’s about the horrible quality of its games or the issues that the developer keeps facing. Ever since XDefiant was announced three years ago, it has been a part of various discussions, with a highlight being that the game may turn out to be a Call of Duty killer.
But that’s only remotely possible when it sees the light of day, but according to Tom Henderson’s report, things have been seriously problematic at the studio, resulting in constant delays.

The Harry Potter and Bridget Jones star is a dazzlingly versatile performer, with a string of Michael Winterbottom films under her belt, as well as Star Wars, TV’s Happy Valley and an Olivier award. She explains how she keeps on top of it all
It is easy to feel protective of Shirley Henderson on this gloomy winter afternoon. Is she warm enough? While bound to spark hundreds of think pieces, Alex Garland’s stirring Civil War will undoubtedly go down, too, as one of the most provocative films of the year. It’s also an early contender for one of the best, offering a stunning warning: no matter what the cause, war is hell. Civil War is less interested in the causes of conflict and more about front lines as the Western Forces march towards the White House through the East Coast, turning small towns into battlefields.
Before January 6, and certainly before 9/11, the alternate universe that Garland sets up would feel unimaginable, yet the Englishman offers a clear warning portraying a world––including a New York City–– that has been modified (à la the Covid era) for new circumstances. In some pockets, including a small town and luxury hotel, life continues with some sense of normalcy and multiple layers of security and...

Alex Garland’s latest film Civil War, from A24 and featuring a star-studded cast including Kirsten Dunst, Cailee Spaeny, Wagner Moura, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Jesse Plemons and Nick Offerman, aims to hold a mirror up to a society spiraling out amongst civil war. In a time when flipping through the news or scrolling through social media can feel like peering into dystopia, Garland wants to crystallize these anxieties into a narrative form, offering a prophetic vision of America’s future. However, despite its ambitious premise and high-caliber cast, the movie stands as a muddled reflection, ultimately rendering its cautionary tale less impactful than intended.

If one is to engage honestly with “Civil War,’ one must also engage with the state of journalism. It is impossible not to in a country that has seen fascism rear its ugly head and reactionary conspiracies take hold in response to cascading existential crises. In the case of “Civil War” it culminates in violence that consumes the country.
That journalism is often seen as the solution to all of this, as if capturing the truth will somehow change things by showing what is happening, represents a central tension at the heart of this fascinating feature. It is a film that is both aware of its own limitations and in a fight to escape them. It’s a reflection on the human cost of this work just as it is a grim look at how little it may end up truly mattering. It’s also nothing like what anyone could...

Denis Villeneuve is talking about the “painful choices” he has had to make for Dune: Part Two while adapting the book and cutting the film. Meanwhile, actor Tim Blake Nelson is expressing he’s “heartbroken” after he learned he was edited out of the film’s final cut that premiered to $182.5M worldwide.
The film Dune is based on the 1965 science fiction novel of the same name created by Frank Herbert. In adapting the book to the big screen, the filmmaker told EW, “When you adapt, there’s always some kind of violence toward the original material. You have to change things, you have to bend, you have to make painful choices.”
Some of those choices for the sequel included eliminating Stephen McKinley Henderson’s character. Henderson played Paul Atreides’ (Timothée Chalamet) mentor Thufir Haway who survives the massacre of House Atreides by House Harkonnen and continues to play a role in the book series.

Since the advent of DVDs and Blu-rays, extended cuts for movies have become pretty unanimous in Hollywood. These versions would often come with deleted scenes that were originally cut from the theatrical experience. However, this wasn’t the case with Denis Villeneuve’s Dune, which was released back in 2021, and unfortunately for fans, similar will be the case for the sequel.
Following Villeneuve’s decision to not incorporate what he gutted out from the theatrical version, fans now will never be able to live scenes of two characters, who didn’t make it to the final cut.
Dune: Part Two
Denis Villeneuve Will Not Incorporate the Deleted Scenes in Dune 2‘s Physical Release
While Dune: Part 2 is turning out to be a huge hit, both critically and commercially, some were upset following the absence of Stephen Henderson’s Thufir Hawat. Although Henderson did film scenes for the film as Thufir Hawat,...

Normally this is the part where we take you on a brief temperature check on—if not philosophical flight of fancy over—the state of the movie industry and how that will factor into what’s occupying most of the real estate in Oscar voters’ heads. We usually delve into why in fact the whole annual spectacle serves just about anything but the purported task of rewarding the previous year’s best cinematic work. How does Parasite represent the best-case scenario for a more international AMPAS? Does Tár surgically unpack our anxieties about representation, or does it just exploit them? Why Green Book, why now? But seeing how Mark Harris, in this weekend’s New York Times, pretty thoroughly wrapped up that legwork this go-around, and recognizing that there’s only so many angles we can take to argue the functional utility that Oppenheimer has market-cornered in this year’s race,...

Update: Former President Trump made remarks after Tuesday morning’s D.C. Circuit hearing on presidential immunity.
But with less than a week before the Iowa caucuses, he seized on the attention of the moment to get in digs at President Joe Biden who, if polls are correct, he likely will face in the November election.
“They’re losing in almost every demographic,” Trump said. “Numbers came out today that are mind boggling if you happen to be Joe Biden.” He countered by claiming that Joe Biden was a “threat to democracy” by claiming his prosecution was politically motivated, even though there is not evidence that the president ordered Trump’s indictment.
Fox News carried Trump’s remarks, even though it did not carry on air the live audio of the hearing itself. CNN carried a portion of Trump’s remarks before going to a fact check and commentary. MSNBC...

Sometimes you look at the best shows across a year of New York theater and see clear trends, the patterns of storytelling or corners of the industry that seem to be thriving most artistically. In 2023, however, there was a happy diversity in the tapestry of the theater that resonated most deeply, from small-scale international entries at the Under the Radar Festival, to puntastic Broadway musical comedies, to potent new voices telling tender stories off-Broadway. Even in a year that often stretched New York theater to the breaking point financially, with several companies closing and nonprofits shortening their current seasons, theater artists were able to thrive and rediscover across the city’s stages.

[This story contains major spoilers from season five, parts one and two, of Virgin River.]
Following a dramatic and intense season five of Netflix’s Virgin River, Alexandra Breckenridge was more than excited to take on the light-hearted holiday episodes that close out the two-part season.
This 12-episode season — which released its first 10 episodes on Sept. 7 — saw new relationships forming for several characters, Brady (Benjamin Hollingsworth) and Brie’s (Zibby Allen) shocking breakup, a wildfire that threatened the entire town, Brie’s difficult court trial for her sexual assault case and Jack (Martin Henderson) finding out his business is at the center of an illegal drug business.
But Breckenridge’s character Mel faced her own battles, including the emotional toll of suffering a miscarriage, which she says was “really difficult” and “very draining” to film.
Then, to add to the drama, Mel finds out in the part one finale that her biological father lives in Virgin River, of all places. Breckenridge recalled talking...

Molly Moon has attracted nearly two million followers on TikTok by taking inspiration from horror video games. She is now getting a chance to put her spin on that genre thanks to Excuse Me, Sir, a new game co-led by Moon and four indie developers.
Moon’s TikToks resemble the point-and-click adventure games that thrived during the 90s. (The 1993 title Myst was once the best-selling PC game of all time.) By combining garbled vocals, creepy images, and the foreboding aesthetic employed by internet fads like The Backrooms and Slender Man, Moon has become one of TikTok’s favorite horror impresarios. Now she’s inviting her fans to play their way through her haunting world.

“The Brady Bunch” star Barry Williams was inspired by TV mom Florence Henderson to go on “Dancing With the Stars,” he told TheWrap in an interview last week.
Henderson, who played mom Carol Brady on the ’70s sitcom, competed in Season 11 of the ABC competition. “She was my inspiration,” he said. When asked if he thinks of the actress, who died on Nov. 24, 2016, whenever he hits the dance floor, he answered, “Yes. Every week.”
Williams visited the set in 2010 to watch Henderson rehearse and perform. “I was really taken with it,” he said. “She had always mentored me in one way or another. She knew that I had been active theatrically in a lot of musicals, and she thought this would be a great fit for me. I got the bug, and she made me promise to go for it.”

Before The Beatles were famous, Paul McCartney and his girlfriend were able to go to movies and concerts without the constant attention that would soon follow McCartney. When his girlfriend, Iris Caldwell, had nights off from her commitments as a dancer and The Beatles didn’t have shows, they would go out together. On their dates, Caldwell sometimes found herself cringing away from McCartney. She shared why his behavior could be embarrassing.
Paul McCartney’s girlfriend said he was sometimes embarrassing
In the early years of The Beatles, McCartney began dating Caldwell, the younger sister of fellow Liverpool musician Rory Storm. They had known each other for years, but he began to view her in a different light after watching her dance at a Beatles show. They began dating, going out together when they could find time between their respective performances.

Season 2 of HBO’s “The Gilded Age” delves deeper into the steel strikers and railroad labor unions that loomed in Season 1 — a storyline that parallels the recent entertainment industry strikes, co-showrunner Sonja Warfield says.

The Max series Dune: The Sisterhood (which is a prequel to the Dune feature films directed by Denis Villeneuve) started filming last November, then underwent quite a shake-up earlier this year when the director of the first two episodes, Johan Renck (who executive produced and directed all five episodes of the HBO limited series Chernobyl) decided to leave the project over creative issues, then Shirley Henderson (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire) – who had been cast as one of the show’s lead characters – followed him out the door. Now IGN reports that Dune: The Sisterhood has gone through another change, but this one much less drastic than having to start over with a different director and star. This one is simply a title change. Dune: The Sisterhood is now going by the title Dune: Prophecy. IGN also reports that the show is expected to start streaming in the...

Viewers felt sympathy for a Wheel of Fortune contestant on Tuesday’s (September 12) episode after he lost out on a big money prize due to what many deemed an “unheard” of phrase, while another said it was “impossible.” Mark Henderson, a theater professor from Jackson, Mississippi, made it to the bonus round and had a chance to add $50,000 to his winnings, having already amassed $13,990 during regular play. Feeling confident, Henderson picked the “Phrase” category and the additional letters “G, Y,” and “O.” Unfortunately, those letters didn’t help much, and Henderson was left staring at a puzzle board that read, “_ _ _ R L _ N G _ R O _ N _.” “Well, it’s a phrase. You have ten seconds to try to do something with that,” host Pat Sajak said. Henderson was completely baffled and didn’t say anything until the last second, randomly guessing, “Carling Brown.” “Well, you said something,” Sajak said,...

London, Aug 31 (Ians) Coach Gareth Southgate has kept faith with two senior players when naming his 26-man squad for England’s two games during the forthcoming international break.
Southgate included Harry Maguire and Jordan Henderson in the squad, despite Maguire remaining out of favour at Manchester United and without an appearance so far this season and Henderson opting to move to Saudi Arabia, which represents a less competitive competition than the Premier League.
The coach has handed a debut call-up to Chelsea defender Levi Colwill and recalled AC Milan’s Fikayo Tomori and Chelsea’s Ben Chilwell, who missed the World Cup, while Arsenal’s in-form Eddie Nketiah also gets the nod, reports Xinhua.

Jordan Emanuel admitted that some of Silas Cooper’s comments he made about her on Summer House: Martha’s Vineyard were hurtful and painted her in an unfavorable light in the house.
Early in the season, Silas targeted Jordan as someone who went out late at night with his wife Jasmine and allowed men to buy them drinks. During dinner, he kept hammering away at Jordan and even Alex Tyree joked about how Jordan was the “toxic” friend.
Despite keeping her cool during Silas’s line of questioning, Jordan admitted that his views and comments were extremely hurtful. She added that Silas also discovered a new side of his wife he hadn’t considered beforehand.

A proposed $5 billion real estate project may see Canadian businessman Michael Henderson building a 900-foot replica of the moon on top of a 100-foot building in Dubai.
The project will be funded by Moon World Results Inc., of which Henderson is the co-founder.
Henderson has proposed to build a resort inside the spherical structure, including a 4,000-room hotel, a 10,000-seat arena, a nightclub, a possible casino and a “lunar colony” that would allow guests to experience the physical feeling of walking on the moon.
In Memoriam 2022: 100 Great Celebrities Who Died In 2022
The project, dubbed Moon, is a far cry from the city’s unfinished buildings left over from the 2009 financial crisis. Dubai had to be given a $20 billion bailout from Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates, to stay afloat at the time.
Now, the housing market has transformed with residential sales reaching a record high last year.
