Oscar winner Jeremy Irons has joined the cast of Palme d’Or-winning director Bille August’s prestige limited series “The Count of Monte Cristo,” which also stars Sam Claflin.
A sprawling adaptation of Alexandre Dumas’ classic novel, the English-language series is produced by Mediawan’s banner Palomar, the leading Italian company behind “That Dirty Black Bag” and “The Name of the Rose,” in collaboration with another Mediawan label, France’s Demd Productions. The series’ five-month shoot will wrap in Malta in December, after having lensed in France and Italy.
The show underscores Mediawan’s strategy to pursue prestige scripted projects with strong international potential under its €100 million co-investment agreement signed earlier this year with private equity film Entourage Ventures.
“The Count of Monte Cristo” marks Irons’ third collaboration with August, who directed him in “Night Train to Lisbon” and “The House of Spirits.” A revered Danish filmmaker, August previously won...

A standout selection at Halloween Frightfest, Karoline Lyngbye’s Superposition takes a disconcerting science fiction premise and teases it out into a disturbing – and sometimes very funny – psychological drama. There are elements of horror, too, as city couple Stine (Marie Bach Hansen) and Teit (Mikkel Boe Følsgaard) head out into the woods on a journalistic mission to find themselves and end up getting much more than they bargained for. On the opposite side of the lake from their little house, they see another couple who seem to resemble them in every way.
It seems very ambitious for a first feature project, I told Karoline when I met her just before the festival.
“Yeah, I guess it is. It's the way the idea shaped itself, so that was just how it went. We did develop it within a call for fairly low budget films. The low budget part is,...

Is there any job as exhausting as being a parent? Mothers especially are expected to watch their children 100% of the time, and castigated if they don’t, but it’s an impossible thing to do in practice, especially if one is also expected to do one’s share of housework and earn a living. In the absence of a partner who is equally committed, one really needs to be two people.
Five-year-old Nemo (Mihlo Olsen) is a very full-on child, old enough to have developed an independent streak but not yet mature enough to recognise that listening to adults can still be important. When Stine (Marie Bach Hansen) and her husband Teit (Mikkel Boe Følsgaard) decide to move out into the middle of nowhere, his needs don’t seem to have been fully taken into account. It’s not a problem for Teit, who casually assumes that Stine will provide most of the care he.

In the film Superposition, city dwellers Stine (Marie Bach Hansen) and Teit (Mikkel Boe Følsgaard) trade Copenhagen for Sweden. Their young son Nemo (Mihlo Olsen) and their dog Tarzan are in tow. As Stine tries to overcome her writer’s block at their isolated cabin in the woods, Teit conceives a podcast documenting their year-long stay. No matter how far they get away from the big city, the couple cannot escape the problems in their relationship. In due time, Karoline Lyngbye’s first long feature presents another obstacle for the main characters, albeit a more unusual one. This new challenge is scary at first, but it ultimately has healing properties.
After a slow start, the pace picks up once Stine loses sight of Nemo in the woods. The son is quickly found, but now the parents have themselves a reversal of the classic changeling scenario. As the child insists the protagonists are not his parents,...

‘The Chestnut Man’: The Latest Danish Netflix Obsession Is Like Watching a Bestselling Mystery Novel
By now, we’re all familiar with the trope in movie and TV trailers where an eerie children’s choir cover of a popular song is used to signify ominous undercurrents. There’s a reason why so many projects have turned to songs that are simultaneously familiar and unfamiliar as a shortcut to significance. It’s ambiguous, it can be unsettling, and it’s (well it used to be) a signal that what was up around the corner was something that could break with expectations.
Over a decade into a post-“Creep” world, that tactic pops up not in the marketing materials for “The Chestnut Man,” but the Netflix show itself. Near the end of the first of the season’s six episodes, an assembled group of Danish schoolchildren sing a nursery rhyme about chestnuts, the same marker a murderer leaves at a crime scene as their de facto calling card.

Fascinating backroom politics circa WWII are undermined by banal marital melodrama in Danish director Christina Rosendahl’s “The Good Traitor,” resulting in a so-so period drama that raises more questions than it answers. The film centers on the life of diplomat-gone-rogue Henrik Kauffmann, who was posted to Washington, D.C., as Danish Ambassador in 1939. When the Nazis occupy Denmark on April 9, 1940, Kauffmann declares himself the only true representative of the free Danish people and goes on to make a number of high-risk autonomous decisions that, in the long run, help to free his homeland. Unfortunately, the details of Kauffmann’s wheeling and dealing are continually undercut by the film’s concentration on his rather unusual personal life, rendered here in trite narrative clichés.
During a long and distinguished foreign service career, Kauffmann enabled the U.S. to install strategic military bases on Greenland (an autonomous territory of Denmark) during WWII.

Director-writer Malou Reymann is perfectly aware that “normal” and “family” are mutually exclusive words — she was 11 when her father transitioned to being a woman, and it’s the memory of what she felt at the time that informs her sensitive and accessible debut, “A Perfectly Normal Family.” Told from the point of view of the younger of two sisters (though not strictly in a Pov manner), the film refreshingly de-sensationalizes her father’s process from Thomas to Agnete, wiping away thoughts of the ludicrous “The Danish Girl” while treating father and daughter in an admirably evenhanded way. Though disturbingly unaware of her daughter’s inner turmoil, Emma’s father’s almost goofy geniality allows her to stay in the audience’s good graces even while sympathies strongly remain throughout with her younger child. Winner of Rotterdam’s Vpro Big Screen Award, which comes with a €30,000 prize as well as guaranteed Dutch distribution,...

The Rain kicks off with a series of events that is by now so commonplace that it makes it difficult for the post-apocalyptic wonder to properly set the tone and mood. Luckily, once Simone (Alba August) and her younger brother, Rasmus (Lucas Lynggaard Tønnesen) enter the doomsday bunker the series begins to realize its potential. As the fascination with the end of the world, whether by disease, catastrophe, or zombie horde, locks its grip on the current cultural consciousness, it becomes harder and harder to effectively get to the meat of the matter. The Rain struggles to establish its particular spin on things without becoming boring, but mostly because it’s railing against so many efforts that came before, and it can’t figure out a way to say the same old things in a way that feels fresh. Mostly, it just decides not to bother. Average-ish teen Simone wanders...

The end of the world is pretty terrifying, no matter how it happens. In the upcoming Netflix series “The Rain,” the main culprit is a deadly downpour that wipes out most of Scandinavia’s population.
People outrunning killer weather isn’t entirely new in apocalypse stories (just ask Jake Gyllenhaal), but it looks like this show is more concerned with what happens years later, after two children who survived the initial attack venture back out into the world to find companions. Emerging from a bunker they’ve been locked in for half a decade, they eventually found people who had their own way of lasting through the killer precipitation.
After finding a small pack of other survivors, it’s clear that even though the streets and schools and supermarkets are deserted, the danger didn’t end when the deadly virus got swept away. There are guns and gangs and killer...

Netflix has released a trailer for a new film called The Rain, which is a post-apocalyptic thriller about a group of young survivors who band together to try and continue to survive a virus that is carried by the rain. Basically, they have to do everything they can to stay dry. I know the premise sounds kind of silly with a tagline like, "Stay dry, stay alive", but it actually looks really good! It looks like the story will go into some very dark territory. The trailer has definitely sparked my interest. Watch the trailer for yourself and let us know if it sparks yours!

What if it was an established fact that free will as a concept was dictated by our body’s chemistry? Every decision we think we’re making is really made implicitly by our organs — more correctly, they are dictating to our brains what it is we want. That shopping spree for things you don’t need? That affair with someone you don’t even like? You can’t control either impulse if you truly wanted to because your hormones and biological imperatives in those specific moments have forced your hand. Just think about the sheer chaos that would ensue from such a revelation. You could connect every horrible act you’ve ever committed to some bit of undigested beef (as Ebenezer Scrooge would say). And while under such duress, your body couldn’t stop itself.

Welcome back to the Weekend Warrior, your weekly look at the new movies hitting theaters this weekend, as well as other cool events and things to check out.
This Past Weekend:
Bomb, bomb bomb bomb, Boooooomb! Things just kept getting worse and worse at the box office as this past weekend saw more new releases not meeting up to their potential. The horribly-reviewed horror movie Rings (Paramount) ended up around where I predicted with $13 million, taking second place to M. Night Shyamalan’s Split. The sci-fi romance The Space Between Us (Stx Entertainment) didn’t make much of a mark, opening in ninth place with just $3.8 million with about $1,300 per theater. Robert De Niro’s The Comedian (Sony Classics) tanked worse than many recent movies, making less than a million in 848 theaters or about $1,000 per theater. By comparison, the doc I Am Not Your Negro made about 78% of that amount in 800 less theaters.
