Exclusive: Abramorama announced they have acquired the rights to North American theatrical distribution of veteran political documentarian Aj Schnack’s latest film Majority Rules, which captures a history-making period during which Alaska became the first state in the nation to implement new election reforms that promise to put voters back at the forefront of elections and governing.
In Majority Rules, Schnack, who is known for his nonpartisan documentaries that delve into American electoral politics, including Convention, Caucus and Midterms, follows Alaska as it is set to implement two novel election reforms: the elimination of traditional party primaries and the ability for voters to rank candidates based on preferences. When the state’s longest-serving Congressman dies unexpectedly leaving an open seat, it prompts a special election to put this system to the test months earlier than anticipated. As dozens of candidates, including former Governor Sarah Palin, vie for the highly coveted seat,...

There were many memorable cinematic performances that came from actresses in 1999 (Annette Bening in American Beauty, Samantha Morton in Sweet and Lowdown, Julianne Moore in Magnolia). And then there was a truly iconic turn from Reese Witherspoon as Tracy Flick, the terrifying antagonist in Alexander Payne’s sharp political satire, Election.
A cunning, ambitious and oh-so-annoying foil to her teacher and would-be mentor, Omaha-area social studies instructor Jim McAllister (Matthew Broderick), Tracy is at times the worst — for example, when her affair with Mr. McAllister’s best friend is discovered, the teenager has no qualms about abandoning him entirely — and in other moments, Tracy can be the absolute best. At least, she insists on that top slot, no matter what: having the highest grades, getting into the best college, winning a high school election — she’s destined for greatness, which in the time Election takes place means winning the office...

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. was appalled — appalled! — to learn in 2008 that Sarah Palin, then-gop nominee John McCain’s running mate, once had ties to the Alaskan Independence Party.
In a HuffPost op-ed titled “Alaskan Independence Party: The Last Refuge of a Scoundrel,” Kennedy excoriated Palin for continuing to “‘pal around’ with a man — her husband, actually — who only recently terminated his seven-year membership” with Aip. (Recently was a bit of a stretch: Todd Palin ended his affiliation with the party six years before Kennedy’s editorial was published.)

Joe Lieberman, the former Connecticut senator and Al Gore’s Democratic vice presidential nominee in 2000, has died. He was 82.
His family said in a statement that he died due to complications from a fall.
“Senator Lieberman’s love of God, his family and America endured throughout his life of service in the public interest,” his family said. His wife, Hadassah, and other family members were at his side when he died, according to the statement.
At the time of his death, Lieberman was leading an effort to recruit a candidate for the group No Labels, which has been seeking a “unity” ticket to run independently of the Democratic and Republican parties.
Lieberman held to the view that, even in a time of hyper polarization, there was a common ground to be found in politics. His own career reflected that, and even those who criticized his positions found him friendly, kind and polite.

“Mary & George” is the delicious new historical drama from British playwright D.C. Moore, who swaps out stuffy history lessons for a raucous, bawdy ride that fans of “The Favourite” will love. Like that Oscar-winning movie, this limited series on Starz focuses on an era of British royalty that is little-known to American audiences.
Julianne Moore plays the Countess of Buckingham, who groomed her son (Nicholas Galitzine) to seduce King James I (Tony Curran) in an attempt to curry favor, power, titles, and riches in 1600s England. In the titular role of Mary, Moore delivers another powerhouse performance. She owns every scene she’s in and proves once more why she is one of the best actresses working today. Critics agree, “Mary & George” is the Moore show.

The studio audience competes to guess the celebrity and win up to $150,000.
Palin, known for her previous appearance on The Masked Singer as the Bear, emerged in a sparkly silver dress to perform a duet of Garth Brooks‘ country classic Friends in Low Places with her non-famous cousin, Jd. The social media backlash happened nearly concurrently with the cameo itself when presidential candidate Nikki Haley made a surprise appearance on the February 3 installment of “Saturday Night Live.“
Interrupting a Donald Trump (James Austin Johnson) town hall in the cold open, Haley made an age joke about Presidents Trump and Biden, grinned awkwardly while “Trump” made fun of her name, and got in a few attack lines in the sketch-turned-free-commercial. Cut to a question from a concerned voter (host Ayo Edebiri) for a joke about her recent “gaffe” regarding her inability to say that the cause of the Civil War was slavery. “SNL” even let Haley say the iconic “Live, from New York…” line!
Oof.
What was striking wasn’t that Haley was on the program. It’s that it felt like her team was trying out a decision from a pre-Trump late-night landscape. Who on earth is this for?...

Actress Dakota Johnson, who is known for ‘Shades of Grey’, dubbed singer-songwriter Taylor Swift as the “most powerful person in America” during her stint on Saturday Night Live. She used this opportunity to tease Donald Trump, the former US president and current presidential candidate, reports Mirror.co.uk.
While reminiscing about the last time she hosted the show for its 40th Anniversary Special in 2015, Dakota showed a photo of herself surrounded by VIPs like Sarah Palin, George Lucas, and Steven Spielberg. Pointing at Trump, who was also in the audience, she said: “And look who’s sitting right behind me.”
As the camera zoomed in on Taylor Swift, who was seated in front of her, Dakota quipped: “Crazy to be standing so close to someone who would become the most powerful person in America.” This joke had the audience in stitches, with many cheering for Dakota.

During Dakota Johnson’s Saturday Night Live monologue, she acknowledged that she just can’t take “interviews seriously” while promoting her films.
The actress, who stars in the upcoming Marvel movie Madame Web, alongside Sydney Sweeney, Isabela Merced and Celeste O’Connor, has been doing a lot of press interviews for the film and realized, “I’m just not good at talking to journalists.”
“I think the big problem is that I say stuff and then they write it down and, and it’s really unfair because most of the time I’m joking,” she quipped.
But Johnson said she’s been that way for a long time, even when she was younger. She proceeded to show a video of herself on a red carpet in the ’90s with her father, actor Don Johnson, as a child. In the footage, she can be seen rolling her eyes.

Johnson highlighted that Donald Trump was sitting right behind her, adding, “It’s just crazy standing so close to someone that would become the most powerful person in America,” but actually referring to Taylor Swift, who was sitting in front of her.
The Madame Web star proceeded to say she’s been promoting her new superhero film saying she’s “not good at talking to journalists,” noting that the “unfair” problem is that “I say stuff, and they write it down.”

Kevin Hart is suing his former assistant and a YouTuber, who allegedly demanded a six-figure payout not to publish what the actor claims is a defamatory interview.
The lawsuit, filed in Los Angeles Superior Court on Tuesday, accuses Tasha K of spearheading a scheme to extort Hart out of $250,000 by threatening to run an interview with his former personal assistant Miesha Shakes. According to the complaint, Shakes made false statements during the conversation that included Hart facing criminal charges over recording a sexual encounter.
Tasha K, whose real name is Latasha Kebe, has over a million subscribers on her YouTube channel, where she mostly posts about celebrity gossip. In March, a federal appeals upheld a $4 million judgment against her for making defamatory claims that the rapper engaged in prostitution, had herpes and used cocaine, among other things.

“May December,” the newest acclaimed drama film from Todd Haynes, is now available to stream on Netflix, and one of the film’s stars, Julianne Moore, is already an early favorite to receive a Best Supporting Actress Oscar nomination for her spellbinding performance. Let’s look back at her five Academy Award races and talk about why Moore finally won her first gold trophy in 2015 for “Still Alice” (2014).
Her first Oscar nomination came in 1998 in the Best Supporting Actress category for “Boogie Nights” (1997). Moore’s only Academy Award nom of the 1990s put her up against Joan Cusack for “In & Out,” Minnie Driver for “Good Will Hunting,” Gloria Stuart for “Titanic” and Kim Basinger for “L.A. Confidential.” Moore didn’t have a chance that first time around because Basinger dominated the category all season, her beloved film often showing up in the Best Picture and Best Director categories,...

Seth Meyers has revealed a Saturday Night Live secret.
In an interview with the podcast Las Culturistas, hosted by Bowen Yang and Matt Rogers, Meyers — a former Saturday Night Live head writer — discussed a 2008 episode with host Anne Hathaway and musical guest the Killers.
“It is the only time I remember when that show was over, the audience gave a standing ovation, and the Killers performed again” after the end of the show, Meyers said.
The Killers made at least one other big impression.
“My parents were at the show,” Meyers recalled, “and I introduced my mom to the Killers, and as they walked away, she said very loud, and they heard, ‘Well I don’t know why they call themselves the Killers, they couldn’t be nicer boys.’”
That 2008 season was satisfying for Meyers. “That year, those Sarah Palin things, that is the most I ever felt like we are on a winning team,...

Oscar-winning actress Julianne Moore has been a cinematic muse for the likes of Todd Haynes, Paul Thomas Anderson, Robert Altman, Alfonso Cuaron, David Cronenberg and the Coen Brothers, to name but a few. But how many of her films are classics? Let’s take a look back at 15 of her greatest roles, ranked worst to best.
Moore became a darling of independent cinema with appearances in such films as “Short Cuts” (1993), “Vanya on 42nd Street” (1994), and “Safe” (1995). It didn’t take long for Oscar voters to notice her talents, and the Academy rewarded her with four nominations in quick succession: Best Actress for “The End of the Affair” (1999) and “Far From Heaven” (2002); Best Supporting Actress for “Boogie Nights” (1997) and “The Hours” (2002). Dean Phillips — liquor heir, gelato prince, step-grandson of the advice columnist Dear Abby, and Democratic congressman from Minnesota — is challenging Joe Biden for the Democratic nomination for president. Phillips filed his paperwork with the Federal Election Commission on Thursday night.
Phillips will officially announce in Manchester, New Hampshire, on Friday, which is the deadline to appear on the primary ballot in the state. To call his candidacy a longshot is an understatement, but Phillips has a good shot of winning the Democratic primary in New Hampshire — because Biden will not appear on the ballot.

According to this very publication, the Rolling Stones’ new album Hackney Diamonds is the best the English rockers have sounded “in about half a century,” so there’s no better time for the new documentary The Stones and Brian Jones to hit theaters (and VOD).

Hillary Clinton wasn’t impressed by Julia Sweeney’s 1993 “Saturday Night Live” impression of her then-teenage daughter, Chelsea Clinton.
Sweeney, 63, recalled the sketch while appearing on Wednesday’s episode of fellow “SNL” alums Dana Carvey and David Spade’s “Fly on the Wall” podcast during a conversation about the show’s lack of female representation in the early ’90s. The group discussed how political figures, like Hilary and Sarah Palin, presented the show an opportunity to include women in sketches.
Spade then jogged Sweeney’s memory, recounting that she once played Chelsea, who was 13 years old at the time, stressing that her portrayal “rubbed somebody wrong.”

Comedian and actress Tina Fey cut her teeth at "Saturday Night Live" as both a cast member and eventually a head writer, where she also occupied the Weekend Update desk alongside Jimmy Fallon. If a new rumor is to be believed, there's a chance she might be returning to 30 Rockefeller Plaza in New York City, and it won't be for a revival of her "SNL"-inspired comedy series "30 Rock."
The New York Post is citing an unknown source who claims that Tina Fey is currently being courted to take over as the executive producer of "SNL" whenever series creator and longtime showrunner Lorne Michaels chooses to retire. Considering the source, we should take this with a grain of salt right now, because plenty of worthless rumors have come out of the New York Post over the years -- especially since another source in the same story says the rumors are untrue.

A new report says Tina Fey is being courted to take over “Saturday Night Live” for Lorne Michaels — but an NBC spokesperson is now denying such claims.
According to a source, per The New York Post, the actress and comedian is being considered to take Michaels’ current position as executive producer when the “SNL” creator, 78, eventually departs.
Though Michaels, who created the popular weekly comedy series back in 1975, hasn’t formally announced a departure, he previously spoke about leaving the show after “its 50th anniversary, which is in three years,” he told Gayle King on “CBS Mornings” in December 2021. “I’d like to see that through and I have a feeling that would be a really good time to leave.”

The Duggar family is under the spotlight thanks to the 2023 docuseries, Shiny Happy People: Duggar Family Secrets. The Masked Singer made its American debut in 2019 after getting its start in South Korea. The show, which features celebrities singing songs while wearing head-to-toe costumes, hosts panelists who interpret clues in order to try and guess the singers’ identities.
The show has been a huge hit since its premiere, winning or being nominated for numerous awards. But concealing the singers’ identities until each reveal takes an extraordinary amount of effort. This includes some rather bizarre rules.

Kelly Ripa has spent 22 years as the host of a single daytime talk show, now earning a salary in the range of $20 million a year. She not only got movie-star rich as the co-host of “Live!”; she’s part of TV history, in a league of legends — Regis Philbin, Phil Donahue, Jerry Springer and Oprah Winfrey — who changed TV as they greeted millions of stay-at-home moms and dads each day.
Following in Winfrey’s footsteps wasn’t a path that the actress born and raised in New Jersey dreamed for herself. When Ripa joined Philbin on “Live!” in February 2001, after a fierce nationwide search to replace Kathie Lee Gifford, she was a bubbly soap-opera star best known for her years on “All My Children.” Since then, Ripa has maintained a cheerful (but not plastic) persona as she steered “Live!,” the most-watched syndicated talk show on TV, through divisive moments in...

Bowen Yang is a three-time Emmy nominee for “Saturday Night Live”: twice in Best Comedy Supporting Actor (2021 and ’22) and once in Best Variety Writing (2019). However, he has yet to claim a golden statue for NBC’s flagship sketch comedy series. That could all change this year, thanks in part to his recurring performance as controversial New York Representative George Santos.
Yang first donned Santos’ trademark black-rimmed glasses and dark suit-and-sweater-vest combo during the January 21 episode hosted by Aubrey Plaza. That’s when he joined Colin Jost and Michael Che at the “SNL” Weekend Update desk to poke fun at the newly elected Republican’s alleged penchant for lying, which was dominating the political world at the time (watch below).

“Saturday Night Live” scene-stealer Cecily Strong had viewers reaching for the tissues during the Season 48 Christmas episode, as she bid adieu to Studio 8H after 11 long years (watch above). She’s already been nominated twice at the Emmy Awards in Best Comedy Supporting Actress (2020 and ’21) for her work on NBC’s late night sketch comedy series, so a third and final bid in the supporting category would be the cherry on top of her celebrated tenure. Of course, if “SNL” is feeling strategic, it could choose to submit her as a guest star instead.
There is a quirky Emmy rule that declares, “Only performers appearing in less than 50% of the eligible episodes can submit in the Guest Performer categories.” Strong missed the first three outings of “Saturday Night Live” due to a stage play in Los Angeles, and the December 17 broadcast was her last ever, so she only appeared in six total episodes this year.

A spinoff of the South Korean version of the show, The Masked Singer sees celebrities disguised in elaborate costumes as they perform songs in front of an audience and a panel of judges. The judges then have the chance to guess who is behind the masks. Votes determine who moves forward, and the celebrities with the least votes get unmasked.
The judges have correctly guessed celebrities many times. However, there have also been a few contestants who had the panel completely stumped and shocked. Here are the most surprising celebrity reveals on The Masked Singer.

By the end of February, she can pick up Golden Globe, Critics Choice and Screen Actors Guild trophies for her portrayal of biotech fraudster Elizabeth Holmes and thus emulate five other women who have each collected all four pieces of hardware for a single non-continuing program performance.

The Saturday Night Live cold open used Herschel Walker’s own slip ups and bizarre words against him to skewer his Senate bid, as the Republican Senate candidate in Georgia faces off against Democrat Raphael Warnock.
In real life, Walker’s post-Election Day runoff has been marked by his comments about vampires and werewolves, as well as a slip-up that was a bit Freudian given the allegations and revelations that have emerged since the football star entered the political arena.
In the skit, Walker (Kenan Thompson) is visiting the office of Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (James Austin Johnson), as he and other colleagues are anxious for any kind of win after Republican hopes of retaking the majority were dashed in the most recent midterms. But the seasoned politicians have to contend with a candidate, Walker, who seems to be testing how much voters will accept when it comes to lack of qualifications.

Chicago – Media journalist Kate Couric came to the 58th Chicago International Film Festival (Ciff) as an Executive Producer for the film “No Ordinary Campaign,” the story of Brian Wallach and wife Sandra Abrevaya, who decided to use their political acumen to create change when Brian was diagnosed with Als (aka Lou Gehrig’s Disease).
The film informs that Brian was given just six months to live, which inspired the couple’s expertise – they met on Barack Obama’s 2008 campaign – to create legislation to help other Als patients to gain access to new experimental drugs and disability benefits. Calling Heard’s counterclaim “erroneous,” Deep’s team argued that the “Pirates of the Caribbean” star should not be held liable for comments made by his attorney, Adam Waldman.
Those who followed the six-week trial will recall the statement made by Waldman to the Daily Mail published April 27, 2020, in which he claimed that Heard and her friends set up Depp by calling the cops with a “hoax” of abuse claims back in 2016. Trevor Noah’s announcement that he will be stepping down from hosting The Daily Show has reignited questions about the future of late night television. The main question seems to be whether late night has a future at all. Many blame streaming for the declining cultural reign of the late night talk show. Here’s another culprit: Sarah Palin.
Despite losing her recent congressional race, Palin’s impact on politics and media looms large. As John McCain’s running mate in 2008, she tapped into Americans who will never identify with Ivy Leaguers like Barack Obama or Hillary Clinton. The intelligentsia dismissed Palin as an intellectual lightweight who couldn’t even name a single newspaper she read when asked by Katie Couric. Other Americans, however, saw themselves in her. My fellow writers won’t like hearing this, but plenty of people don’t like to read.

It’s been said that former President Donald Trump corrupts all who enter his orbit — that it’s impossible to deal directly with him without taking on his amorality and crassness.
“The Lincoln Project,” a new documentary series on Showtime, depicts that process among his political opposition. Here, people devoted to ousting Trump mirror his rhetorical style and his self-regard. And it’s in subtly making this case that the documentary succeeds, even as it grows punishing to watch.
The Lincoln Project, a circle of former high-level Republican strategists who made viral anti-Trump ads, seemed throughout the 2020 presidential election to be, Trumpishly, more focused on brand promotion than political work. “No one’s ever fucked with a candidate like we’ve fucked with a candidate,” Lincoln Project co-founder Rick Wilson says early in the doc; those schemes include a Times Square billboard, attention-getting for attention’s sake.

When Dr. Jessica Klemens thinks about the stakes of this year’s election in Pennsylvania, she imagines being summoned to the emergency room at the hospital where she works in Montgomery County and being presented with a patient bleeding heavily from the beginnings of a miscarriage. “If I go down there, and she’s hemorrhaging, but there’s still a fetal heartbeat” — and, if Klemens treats that patient as she’s been trained to as an Ob-gyn — “based on this [proposed] legislation, I would be committing a crime.” She thinks about ectopic pregnancies,...

t is rather surprising that a comedic superstar like Robin Williams only hosted "Saturday Night Live" three times. The last time he took on hosting duties was in 1988, and after that, he only appeared on the show in one cameo in 2010 when Robert De Niro hosted. Whenever the likes of Steve Martin host the show 15 times and pop up on a regular basis outside of that, I wonder why Willaims wasn't a more stable fixture for the sketch program. After all, who would be disappointed to have one of the most inherently funny people of the last 50 years on your goofy comedy show all the time? It would have been nice to have a luminary like him in the Five-Timers Club.
That isn't to say he had a grudge against the show. In fact, in 2008, there was an instance where he wanted to have a bit of fun with Lorne Michaels...

John Oliver isn’t overly thrilled about the U.K.’s new Prime Minister Liz Truss, calling her a number of things on Sunday night’s episode of “Last Week Tonight,” including “Margaret Thatcher if she were high on glue” and “dollar-store British Leslie Knope.” But he does think Truss was gifted a pretty easy first week in office — thanks to Queen Elizabeth II’s death.
Truss was elected earlier this year to succeed Boris Johnson, after he bowed to public pressure and resigned. In a speech on Monday, Truss took a moment to pay tribute to Johnson, saying “You were admired, from Kiev to Carlisle.” Following that statement, Truss was met with a long pause before the room lightly applauded — something Oliver took great joy in making fun of.
“Ok, a couple things there. First, the U.K. goes above Carlisle, so that’s basically admission that everyone north of...

It was the best of times and the worst of times at the 64th Primetime Emmys which took place at the then Nokia Theatre on Sept. 21, 2012.
It was the best of times for “Modern Family” because ABC sitcom took home its third straight Emmy for Best Comedy Series plus prizes for featured players Julie Bowen and Eric Stonestreet, and helmer Steve Levitan.
And it was the worst of times for AMC’s landmark “Mad Men,” which had won Best Drama series for four years running. In 2012, the period drama was in contention for 17 Emmys only to be shut out in every category. That was the record for the most losses until last year when Hulu’s “The Handmaid’s Tale” left empty-handed despite 21 bids.
For the first time in Emmy history none of the four major broadcast networks earned nominations for drama series, drama actor or drama supporting actor.
Showtime finally...

James Corden was pretty shocked after Sarah Palin lost her bid to replace longtime Republican Don Young for Alaska’s seat in the U.S. House of Representatives, especially considering she lost it to a Democrat in the deep-red state. The late night host was “rocked” by the fact that an “unhinged Republican” didn’t win, considering their apparent popularity in politics right now.
With her win in a special election to replace the late Young, Democrat Mary Peltota becomes the first Alaskan Native to serve as a lawmaker in Congress for the state. Peltola’s win is monumental for Democrats, as Young held the seat for 49 years until his death in March.
“It was a surprising loss,” Corden said. “Unhinged Republicans seem to be all the rage these days. I’m blown away here, I am.”
Corden continued to marvel about Alaska being flipped blue, especially after Young won re-election 24 times in his career,...
