Updated with TCM statement. Warner Bros Discovery’s TCM is officially discontinuing its Underground sub-brand, two months after laying off programmer Millie De Chirico.
TCM’s official Twitter handle confirmed the news on Wednesday, which riled up cinephiles on the social platform. The final titles carrying the Underground label will air on Friday. “Classic cult favorites and hard-to-find films will always be in our DNA, and we will continue to find ways to showcase them,” the company said in a statement.
No further staff reductions will result from the official end of the banner, a rep confirmed to Deadline. Wbd, which reports its quarterly earnings Thursday afternoon, has been on a quest to deliver $3.5 billion in cost savings following the April 2022 merger of WarnerMedia and Discovery.

“We’re going to put 2022 behind us and focus on the future,” said Kathleen Finch, Chairman and Chief Content Officer of Warner Bros. Discovery’s U.S. Networks Group.
Speaking candidly during a Deadline-moderated keynote at the Realscreen conference in Austin, Texas, Finch opened up about the challenges and plans at the newly merged company.
“Going through a merger — and this was a humungous merger — is tough, it’s tough on the content creators, partners, staff, we’re a little ‘rear view mirroring it’ and we’re thrilled about what 2023 is,” she said. “Just now is when we’re able to put our strategy in place; last year was based on bringing two giant entities together.”
Finch talked about programming plans for its networks including the Turner networks, Discovery channels as well as the likes of HGTV and Food Network. She also discussed the recent restructure that led to the...

That includes Season 4 of TBS’ Miracle Workers, which had been slated to open January 16; Season 2 of the network’s unscripted series The Cube, which had been slotted for a January 8 debut; as well as TNT’s acquired British drama The Lazarus Project, which had been teed up for a January 23 launch. The restructuring at Warner Bros. Discovery continues, with Kathleen Finch’s U.S. networks group the latest division to reorganize.
The reorg will see a handful of prominent former Discovery execs depart the company, including Nancy Daniels, who had been overseeing channels like TNT, TBS, and Discovery, and Jane Latman, who had been overseeing Food Network and HGTV.
Finch announced the moves in a memo Friday morning.
“Over these last eight months as a merged team we have gained a better understanding of our combined business and organizational structure, and it’s become more clear that we need to make additional adjustments for the future as we evolve to a more streamlined operating model,” Finch wrote. “I am announcing a reorganization today that will ultimately enable our business to run more effectively and collaboratively across all the brands and business functions while maintaining...

Warner Bros. Discovery has cut another round of prominent leaders, ousting HGTV and Food Network chief Jane Latman and “D-Nets”/”T-Nets” exec Nancy Daniels, both of whom are beloved, longtime legacy Discovery execs.
Latman, who serves as president of home and food content at HGTV and Food Network, is being eliminated and her content programming responsibilities will move under execs Betsy Sanner Ayala (for Food Network) and Loren Ruch (for HGTV).
Daniels, who oversaw content across “D-Nets” Discovery, Animal Planet and Science Channel on the legacy Discovery side and recently took over content for Warner Bros. “T-Nets,” TNT, TBS and truTV, is stepping down and handing the reins over to TLC and Travel Channel exec Howard Lee for the D-Nets, while Jason Sarlanis of ID and Hln crime content will oversee the T-Net side.
Also exiting are Travel Channel’s Matthew Butler and D-Nets/T-Nets’ head of franchise series expansions and tentpole programming Scott Lewers.

All Elite Wrestling (Aew) is celebrating the third anniversary of its weekly Wednesday night show, “Dynamite,” and company leader Tony Khan is thrilled to have seen the program grow by leaps and bounds in that time.
“I think we’ve done about 160 episodes of ‘Dynamite’ now, and we’ve learned a lot in the last several years that I think has helped improve the flow of the show,” Khan said in an interview with Variety. “I think we’ve developed a lot of new stars in these three years to where we can put on more consistent great cards week to week.”
The very first episode of “Dynamite” aired on Oct. 2, 2019 on TNT (the show now airs on TBS), but that was not the first Aew card to air on television. The company had already run multiple pay-per-views prior to “Dynamite’s” launch, something Khan credits for a lack of...

Yes, there’s still a Fall TV season, and yes, it’s now well under way. Broadcast TV got a little pep in its step last year thanks to two freshman sitcom phenoms: ABC’s “Abbott Elementary” and CBS’ “Ghosts.” When asked to tout their new wares, several network execs instead opted to shine more spotlight on returning shows they hope to keep buzzing as sophomore sensations.
It’s time for Variety’s annual fall check-in with network heads across broadcast, cable and streaming — although how to do that proves tricky these days. Many execs’ gigs transcend platforms, after all — like Disney’s Craig Erwich, who serves as entertainment president for both ABC and Hulu, or the NBCUniversal duo of Susan Rovner and Frances Berwick, whose domain stretches across programming for broadcast, network and streaming.
But they all are toiling away in this new landscape, and all facing the same issues.

Exclusive: Corie Henson, who runs unscripted for the Turner networks, is leaving the broadcaster. Deadline understands that Henson has decided to exit Warner Bros Discovery as the newly merged company figures out how it will bring together its various unscripted teams.
Henson, who is EVP, Head of Unscripted for TBS, TNT and truTV, joined the company in 2019 from Fox, where she was EVP Alternative Entertainment.
We hear that she will stay in the role for a transition period. The networks are now run by Nancy Daniels, who took on the role of overseeing the T-Nets in addition to Discovery Channel, Animal Planet and Science Channel.
Deadline understands that she decided to exit now, rather than stay on and figure out what her future role might be. This comes as she essentially ran her own business unit under Brett Weitz, who left in May.

Ahead of tomorrow’s expected close of the 43 billion WarnerMedia-Discovery merger, the executive leadership structure of the new company has been set.
David Zaslav, CEO of Discovery since 2007, will hold the same title at the combined entity. He has installed J-b Perrette to oversee streaming (in a larger version of the role he had at Discovery), while veteran unscripted programming exec Kathleen Finch will supervise all linear networks. Toby Emmerich, Casey Bloys and Channing Dungey, heads of Warner Bros Pictures, HBO and Warner Bros TV, respectively are all remaining in place. Bruce Campbell, the top distribution exec at Discovery (a crucial function given the billions in carriage fees and complex streaming deals in his purview) has been given a similar job at the new company.
The elevation of Finch, a Scripps Networks Interactive veteran and former network news producer who joined Discovery after the company bought Scripps in 2018, had been widely anticipated.

As Discovery and WarnerMedia are set to close their 43B merger later this week, the attention has been focused mainly on the deal’s ramifications for WarnerMedia’s movie and scripted television businesses. There’s been much industry chatter about the importance of Casey Bloys’ scripted television empire and whether Toby Emmerich continues to oversee The Batman film studio.
The pair, alongside Warner Bros. TV boss Channing Dungey, are expected to report directly to David Zaslav under the company’s new structure, which is set to be unveiled shortly.
However, as high-profile these areas are, they also are additive to Discovery’s business, which is only peripherally involved in scripted TV via the company’s venture with Oprah Winfrey OWN. Meanwhile, it is unscripted television where the two merging companies have the biggest overlap and where combining the assets will require consolidation.

Bruce Campbell has served as Discovery CEO David Zaslav’s top dealmaker for more than 20 years, and over their tenures at NBCUniversal and Discovery, has helped orchestrate many key M&a deals. The transactions ranged from the merger of NBC and Universal Studios to Discovery’s purchase of Eurosport and its 2018 acquisition of Scripps Networks Interactive that bolstered its arsenal of lifestyle TV brands.
But in early March, Campbell was handed his toughest assignment yet after learning that Zaslav had initiated secret talks with AT&T CEO John Stankey that culminated in the surprise $43 billion WarnerMedia-Discovery spinoff agreement unveiled May 17.

Discovery brought a vision to advertisers this year that it will be hard to duplicate in sessions to come.
The owner of the TLC, Food Network and HGTV cable outlets spent Wednesday morning explaining how its networks, focused largely on reality and documentary programming, could stand through even conditions spurred by the coronavirus pandemic. Programming and advertising executives nodded to new “at home” formats devised for popular hosts like Guy Fieri and The Pioneer Woman, while articulating new shows and series that will debut in weeks to come. Discovery made the presentation as part of the industry’s annual “upfront,” when U.S. TV networks try to sell the bulk of their ad inventory for the next programming cycle.

Discovery Channel is entering the dating game with series orders for three shows that blend romance with nature, entertainment and adventure, including “Naked and Afraid of Love,” “Mating Season” and “Mountain Love,” TheWrap has learned exclusively.
The trio of series will be available across Discovery, Inc. platforms later this year.
Here’s the official description for “Naked and Afraid of Love”:
Today, dating has become filtered – through the clothes we wear, jobs we have, and lives we share on social media. But what if it was all stripped away — the filters, dating apps and curated personas — leaving room for only our most primal wants and needs, and exposing who we really are in the process? Would we forge stronger connections? Discovery seeks to answer these questions and more in “Naked and Afraid of Love,” a groundbreaking take on modern dating that is the ultimate blend of survival and romance unlike anything viewers have seen.

Would we forge stronger connections? Discovery seeks to answer these questions and more in “Naked and Afraid of Love,” a groundbreaking take on modern dating that is the ultimate blend of survival and romance unlike anything viewers have seen.

Not even the Covid-19 pandemic could stop Shark Week. The annual Discovery Channel franchise, now in its 32nd edition, remains a juggernaut for the company — which this year is using Shark Week to launch five new series while giving the network (and cable in general) a needed boost.
“I’ve worked at Discovery as a broad company for a long time, and Shark Week was always the biggest week of the year across the entire company,” says Nancy Daniels, the chief brand officer of Discovery & Factual. “Everybody loves Shark Week. Everybody loves talking about Shark Week.”
Shark Week has been called “Discovery’s Super Bowl,” and that’s not just hyperbole. “Shark Week brings in a different audience, a more expansive audience, than we get most other weeks of the year,” Daniels says. “We get a lot more A/B county people watching. We get just a lot more eyeballs...

Exclusive: Discovery and Abramorama are teaming for a virtual theatrical and broadcast rollout of Apocalypse ‘45, a documentary from Erik Nelson that recounts the harrowing end of World War II through the eyes of 24 men who lived through the events and using never-before-seen footage. The documentary will get a two-week exclusive virtual cinema run beginning August 14, leading into the the film’s Labor Day Weekend broadcast on Discovery Channel.
The timing coincides with the 75th anniversary of VJ Day on August 15, when the Japanese forces surrendered to the Allies, with the National WW II Museum in New Orleans and the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum in New York among those participating in screening events. An invite-only premiere is set for Thursday.
Nelson, a longtime collaborator of Werner Herzog has followed up his previous archival feature The Cold Blue with this doc, for which the National Archives allowed previously denied access to more than 700 reels of footage, covering the harrowing expanse of the final months of WWII in the Pacific that culminated in the dropping of atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The footage, which includes film shot by director John Ford capturing the ruins of the Pacific Fleet after the attack on Pearl Harbor, has been digitally restored in 4K and in color.
Interviews with the two dozen men who lived through the events make up the film’s narration, guiding viewers from the flag-raising at Iwo Jima in February 1945, Okinawa in April, the New Mexico desert bomb tests in July and the air war over Japan in the summer.
Check out the trailer here:
“This was an important time in our nation’s history, and it is vital that we never forget the sacrifices of the people who lived through it,” said Nancy Daniels, Chief Brand Officer at Discovery and Factual. “Erik’s documentary delivers their stories with stunning, never-before-seen footage and raw emotion. With the 75th anniversary, it is the perfect opportunity to bring this timely film to Discovery audiences in multiple ways.”
Said Abramorama principals Richard Abramowitz and Karol Martesko-Fenster: “We are honored to be partnering with Discovery to release Erik’s astonishing film to mark this momentous time in our history. Now more than ever we need the kind of heroes who understand the consequences of their actions.”
Apocalypse 45 is produced by Peter Hankoff and Elisabeth M. Hartjens, with Clark Bunting, Daniels, Dave Harding and Howard Swartz executive producers.

The week of March 9 — when the coronavirus was officially declared a pandemic, and Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson shared the news that they had tested positive for Covid-19 — a cascade of television shows and movies shut their productions down for safety reasons. From “Stranger Things” to “The Batman,” these shutterings are temporary, and sets will be up and running as soon as it’s safe to go back into production — though no one knows when that might be. All told, the pipeline for scripted television and movies for later this year and into 2021 has been decimated. The broadcast networks, unable to shoot any pilots for the 2020-21 TV season, are in uncharted territory. And unless the coronavirus curve flattens soon, the broadcasters, which schedule hours and hours of reality television in the summer, will have to rely almost entirely on repeats.

The great pride on Discovery Channel’s “Serengeti” is not so great at forgiveness.
On Sunday, Kali tests the waters (ironically in the grassland region of northern Tanzania) as to whether or not she and her cubs will be let back in to the group, despite that big scarlet “A” permanently shaved into her fur. Yeah, she had cubs outside of the pride, a real no-no in the lion community.
Much like their plains-mates the elephants, lions apparently never forget, and Kali and her kids are not welcome back. At least, not for now.
Watch the video above, which is exclusive to TheWrap.

If you were captivated by the recent hyper-visual CG-laden The Lion King, then the Discovery Channel’s upcoming Serengeti will make your jaw hit the floor — because it is real life. With the series premiering August 4, it’s close to the release of the new iteration of the Disney film and creator and producer Simon Fuller and director and producer John Downer admitted that it was just a coincidence.
“We certainly weren’t planning it,” said Downer of the release dates of Serengeti and The Lion King. He said he hasn’t seen the movie yet, but he said he did see the trailer and realized that it looked like their series.
“There is a convergence there,” added Downer. “The Lion King is going for photo-realism. We’re going for realism…we are trying to do something different.”

Discovery channel lifts the lid off an Egyptian Sarcophagus to find three mummies, but did they lift the curse?
History is being made on live TV, but ancient forces may still have their way. Indian Jones and his contemporaries worried about what might happen if you disturbed a mummy's final resting place. A team of Egyptian archaeologists and explorers uncovered the 2,500-year-old mummy of a high priest on live television on Discovery's Expedition Unknown: Egypt Live. The 2-hour live multi-platform event also revealed two other mummies along with a treasure trove of antiquities, including a "mysterious wax head."
The findings were unearthed live on Sunday, April 7, giving viewers a rare opportunity to join an actual archeological excavation in real time – exploring a labyrinth of underground tombs and witnessing the inner chambers of the remote burial site known as Al-Ghorifa in Middle Egypt, located approximately 165 miles south of Cairo.
