Roku has commissioned a second season of animated comedy Doomlands and ordered a duo of non-scripted projects.
Josh O’Keefe’s Doomlands was picked up by Roku from failed short-form streamer Quibi two years ago.
Comprised of 10 15-minute episodes, season two of Blue Ant-backed Look Mom! Productions show will pick up from where season one left off, following the adventures of the infamous Danny Doom Doom, Lhandi and the crew of the Oasis.
Doomlands is written by Josh O’Keefe, Roger Bainbridge, Kayla Lorette and Mark Little. Lee Porter and O’Keefe serve as co-showrunners. The series is directed by Josh O’Keefe and exec produced by Josh Bowen.
Meanwhile, Roku has ordered Survival from Above and Lincoln Log Project (working title).
The former from Caravan, which airs next year, is the first-ever survival competition series set entirely in rainforest treetops of Guyana, South America, according to Roku, with contestants suspended 100 feet off the ground.

Updates earlier exclusive, with quotes:: It’s official. David Eilenberg is returning to being a buyer.
The Chief Creative Officer of ITV America is joining Roku as its Head of Originals.
ilenberg will join in April and report to Rob Holmes, VP Programming at Roku.
It comes as the streaming service has been ramping up the amount of exclusive and original content that it develops and commissions.
Last year, Roku acquired Quibi’s library of original content and launched dozens of short-form shows on The Roku Channel, including a number that never launched on the Jeffrey Katzenberg-led service. In addition, it renewed a number of shows for second seasons.
But outside of the Quibi deal, the service, which essentially began as a streaming aggregator, has plans to bolster its pipeline of original series and films even further with plans to order around 50 series and films over the next two years.

“White and Nerdy” doesn’t capture just how glorious of a transformation this is.
The first look at Daniel Radcliffe as five-time Grammy winner “Weird Al” Yankovic is already giving us a curly-haired mullet, bright tropical print tee, and, of course, a rocking mustache. Radcliffe made headlines when he was cast as the titular comedy musician in the Roku Channel’s “Weird: The Al Yankovic Story.”
“Wearing the Hawaiian shirt is a huge responsibility that I don’t take lightly,” Radcliffe said in a press statement about taking on the role. “I’m honored to finally share with the world the absolutely 100-percent unassailably true story of Weird Al’s depraved and scandalous life.”
Produced by Funny or Die and Tango, “Weird” began filming in February 2022 with a script by Yankovic and Eric Appel, who also directs and executive produces.

One of the most unusual quirks of this year’s Emmy nominations was the fact that Quibi managed to land eight of them — quite a feat, given that the streamer doesn’t actually exist anymore.
Quibi shut down in December, less than a year after its much-heralded launch. The Jeffrey Katzenberg-Meg Whitman startup and its promise of delivering “quick bite” content to users exclusively on their phones became a bit of a punchline in the industry. But the programming itself was rather solid, attracting top Hollywood producers and stars. Clearly TV Academy voters found it Emmy-worthy: Last year, Quibi won two Emmys (for “#FreeRayshawn”).
This year’s three nominated Quibi shows — “Die Hart,” “Mapleworth Murders” and “Reno 911!” — live on via Roku, which acquired the Quibi programming slate earlier this year for its Roku Channel. Here’s the awkward thing: The Television Academy still lists the network for those shows as Quibi,...

Roku will add 23 series on Friday to its free streaming outlet the Roku Channel, including former Quibi shows like Emmy-nominated comedy The Mapleworth Murders.
The announcement of the new arrivals came with new Nielsen data showing the channel was No. 6 in terms of household reach among all streaming services.
Along with 18 other titles from the trove of Quibi shows acquired from the defunct mobile streaming outlet in January, Roku will also premiere three other new originals. They include Eye Candy, a Josh Groban-hosted edible-creations competition show; Squeaky Clean, a Leslie Jordan cleaning competition; and What Happens in Hollywood, a 10-part docuseries from filmmaker Maria Zenovich about how views of sex and sexuality are shaped by entertainment.
Roku is also bringing out a second season of Thanks a Million, the unscripted show produced by Jennifer Lopez’s Nuyorican Productions and B17 Entertainment. Quibi ordered a second season in April 2020 but...

Roku is betting its fire-sale pickup of the shows from Quibi, Jeffrey Katzenberg’s short-lived, short-form startup, will continue to pay off for the streaming platform.
On Aug. 13, the company will premiere 23 new Roku Originals (each of them from Quibi’s library) exclusively on the Roku Channel to stream for free with ads. It’s the second tranche of Quibi shows coming to the Roku Channel, after Roku bowed 30 titles in May.
The new shows coming to the Roku Channel include “Mapleworth Murders,” a “Murder She Wrote” spoof that nabbed three 2021 Emmy acting nominations for Paula Pell, John Lutz and J.B. Smoove. Also on the slate are four previously unreleased Quibi titles: “Eye Candy” hosted by Josh Groban, a competition series in which contestants attempt to identify outrageous edible creations that look like everyday objects; cleaning competition “Squeaky Clean” hosted by Leslie Jordan; Season 2 of money-giveaway reality show “Thanks a...

The Roku Channel will be premiering a fresh batch of its original shows on Aug. 13, the company announced Monday. The new slate of 23 shows — all stemming from Roku’s acquisition of Quibi’s library earlier this year — will include a new season of “Thanks a Million,” the pay-it-forward series from executive producer Jennifer Lopez.
The new season of “Thanks a Million” will include guest stars Matthew McConaughey, Chris Rock, Vanessa Hudgens and Lana Condor, among others, Roku said. Other titles coming soon to Roku includes “Mapleworth Murders,” the Emmy-nominated show starring Paula Pell, John Lutz and J.B. Smoove. The comedy-mystery series was first available on Quibi last August and is produced by “SNL” head honcho Lorne Michaels and Seth Meyers.

Kevin Hart’s comedy action series Die Hart, which debuted last year on short-lived streaming service Quibi before being resurrected this year as a Roku Original, has been renewed for a second season.
The show is the first Roku Original to get a renewal. The streaming purveyor used the dozens of Quibi shows it acquired in January to launch its original programming banner, with shows all streaming on the free, ad-supported Roku Channel. The first 30 Quibi alumni debuted May 20.
The second outing of the show will be titled Die Harter. Hart will return as star and exec producer but the rest of the cast will be announced down the line. John Travolta, Nathalie Emmanuel, Josh Hartnett and Jean Reno appeared alongside Hart in the first season.

Kevin Hart action-comedy series “Die Hart” has officially been renewed for a second season — again.
Roku announced that it has ordered Season 2 of “Die Hart,” which naturally will be titled “Die Harter,” as an exclusive for the free, ad-supported Roku Channel. “It’s been great to see the incredible response to ‘Die Hart’ on the Roku Channel,” Hart said in a statement. “We’re excited to be partnering with Roku to bring another season to its audience.”
The show is the first former Quibi original that Roku is renewing. Actually, “Die Hart” had already been picked up for a second season by Quibi last September, but that came about a month before the richly funded Jeffrey Katzenberg-led mobile subscription-video startup announced that it was shutting down. In January 2021, Roku paid substantially less than $100 million to snap up the assets of Quibi, a deal that included more than 75 shows.

Roku on Tuesday said it’s renewed Kevin Hart’s action-comedy series “Die Hart” — one of several shows the company acquired from Quibi, Jeffrey Katzenberg’s now-defunct mobile streaming service — for a second season. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
“It’s been great to see the incredible response to ‘Die Hart’ on The Roku Channel,” Hart said in a statement. “We’re excited to be partnering with Roku to bring another season to its audience.”
The series is the first Roku Original to be renewed, and comes after the show pulled in a “record number of households streaming the series” the weekend following its May 20 debut. (Company executives declined to share specific streaming figures.) The new season, continuing its homage to the “Die Hard” franchise, will be dubbed “Die Harter.”
“This was not a difficult decision to make,” Colin Davis, Roku’s head of original scripted programming, told TheWrap.

Roku has recruited another former employee from Quibi, the now-defunct mobile streaming subscription startup that closed its doors in 2020 just six months after launching.
Lisa Flores, previously marketing lead at Quibi, is now overseeing social media for The Roku Channel, the company’s streaming service that aggregates free, ad-supported and subscription content. She came on board earlier this month, joining the company after Roku inked a deal to acquire global rights to more than 75 original shows from Quibi, the startup headed by Jeffrey Katzenberg and Meg Whitman. Roku plans to stream the Quibi shows for free on the Roku Channel beginning sometime in 2021, but so far hasn’t provided a launch date.
In addition to Flores, several other ex-Quibians have also landed at Roku. Those include Brian Tannenbaum, who oversees unscripted content for The Roku Channel; Colin Davis, lead for The Roku Channel’s scripted content; Ryan Bocskay, business affairs...

Exclusive: Colin Davis, the former comedy chief at shortform service Quibi, has joined Roku.
Davis joins his former non-scripted colleague Brian Tannenbaum at the technology company to work on scripted content for the Roku Channel.
As with Tannenbaum, the priority is for Davis, who was responsible for bringing in shows such as the Reno 911! revival and Cody Heller’s Dummy, to help Roku manage the load of Quibi shows after Roku acquired the library.
Other projects that Davis had a hand in at Quibi were Darren Criss musical series Royalties; Funny or Die’s offbeat workplace comedy Agua Donkeys from MP Cunningham and Jeremy Jackson; and Kevin Hart action-comedy series Die Hart, which had been renewed for a second season before Quibi folded.
Similar to Tannenbaum, Davis spent two years at Quibi.

Will Taylor Swift earn an Album of the Year nomination for “Reputation”? It seems likely given her track record. She has won the top prize twice out of three nominations, and is one of only two women to have won Album of the Year twice as a lead artist (the other was Adele). “Reputation” also received solid reviews: 71 on MetaCritic, better than the last Album of the Year winner, “24K Magic” by Bruno Mars. And it was a huge hit, selling more than 1.2 million copies in its first week alone. But Swift could potentially suffer the same fate as Ed Sheeran, who was unexpectedly shut out of the general field in 2018 for his album “Divide.” The likely culprit? The recording academy’s nomination review committees.

Two weeks since its release, “This is America” by Childish Gambino (aka Donald Glover) is a bona fide hit, debuting at number-one on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart (a first for Gambino) and holding on to the top spot in week two. But how will the Grammys respond to it? The recording academy won’t had out prizes until 2019, but the eligibility period is more than halfway over. And when we polled our readers most of them (54%) said the song “should win Record of the Year.” Scroll down to the bottom of this post for our complete poll results.

Having given the history of the "New World" in Part I, it seems wise to preface Part II with some words about how the symphony is constructed. The movements are:
I. Adagio; Allegro molto II. Largo III. Scherzo: Molto vivace IV. Allegro con fuoco
Unusually, every movement starts with an introduction. The first movement's is the most famous: starts with a striking slow introduction that establishes the current of nostalgia for, or homesickness for, the composer's native Bohemia. Another reminder of this comes with the famotus flute solo -- or does it? Some have remarked on its similarity to "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot," but this is not so much a quote as a paraphrase, so to speak; small bits of "Chariot" are elided into something new that mingles many flavors: African-America spiritual, yes, but also Native American music and Bohemian folk music, which share a pentatonic flavor.

Dvořák (1841-1904), from Bohemia (at the time, part of the Austro-Hungarian empire, and later in Czechoslovakia) peppered his colorful, amiable music with folk rhythms. The Ninth, subtitled "From the New World" and inspired by and written during his time in the United States, is Dvořák’s most beloved symphony and contains both Bohemian and American influences. Prompted by the current exhibit of the work's original manuscript in New York City at the Bohemian National Hall, I have followed up my review of Jiří Bĕlohlávek's new Dvořák symphony cycle box set on Decca and his concert with the Czech Philharmonic at Carnegie Hall with a trawl through my collection of "New World" recordings, selectively augmented by streaming recordings available on Rdio.com.
There is much debate concerning the materials of the Ninth. The composer himself said that its middle movements were intended to depict scenes from Longfellow's narrative poem The Song of Hiawatha,...

The thing about Pierre Monteux's May 29, 1913 premiere of Le Sacre du Printemps (The Rite of Spring), by Igor Stravinsky (1882-1971) at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris for Serge Diaghilev's Ballets Russes, is that it's not just the anniversary of the first time a famous piece was played in public. It's the anniversary of the most famous scandal in music history (and ballet history).
The audience was so violently divided in their opinions of the performance that there was an actual riot; there are widely disparate accounts of the evening, and some say the police removed some audience members, so contentious did things become. The orchestra was bombarded with projectiles, and the audience's vocal disapproval (combined with Rite supporters' vocal disapproval of the anti-Rite faction's demonstrations) drowned out the music often enough that the choreographer, Vaslav Nijinsky, had to spend much of the performance standing in the wings shouting directions to the dancers,...

There's nothing quite like the sustained pleasure of immersing one's self in a huge chunk of a top-notch artist's output for a significant period of time. This was easily accomplished in 2012, because lately it seems like the classical arms of the major labels are trying to get all their best material into budget-priced box sets (in Europe even more than in the U.S., so check the imports, especially for Sony). And anything they aren't doing that with, another label would be happy to license. In that sense, it's a great time to be a classical fan. Nonetheless, I'm keeping this list shorter than my new releases list, because, well, there's too much to listen to all of it! So to make my list, these items had to make me very, very happy in 2012.

A British town made famous by Sacha Baron Cohen's comedy creation Ali G has been renamed.
Staines in Surrey, England was famously lampooned by the British comic as the hometown of his rapper character in popular TV series Da Ali G Show and 2002 movie Ali G Indahouse.
However, officials in the area have now voted to change the town's name to Staines-upon-Thames in a bid to distance themselves from the Ali G link.
Local councillor Colin Davis tells Britain's Independent, "There is no doubt that the name Staines lends itself readily to humour. We are actually a green and leafy town, with lots of old buildings and a beautiful Thames (river) frontage. Then Ali G came along and there was a lot of negativity."...

Town officially changes name to Staines-upon-Thames, but not all residents are convinced
After suffering years of ridicule since Sacha Baron Cohen decided to make it the home of his creation Ali G, Staines has officially changed its name in an attempt to distance itself from the joke, to the more upmarket Staines-upon-Thames.
The long-debated revamp of the Surrey town prompted a day of celebrations on Sunday – from maypole dancing to a regatta – as the town set out to prove it was more glamorous than its M25 commuter-belt image, association with Ali G or its "ghost town" depiction by indie band Hard-Fi might suggest.
Spelthorne borough council, which pushed through the change after it was first suggested by a business forum, hopes it will bring more business to the town.
Colin Davis, one of its councillors, told the BBC: "Ali G may have had a role, but I think it goes back further than that.

Chuck 5.05 "Chuck Vs. The Hack-Off" Review
Chuck season 5 hacks out its fifth entry with this week’s "Chuck Vs. The Hack-Off" as Chuck and Sarah go undercover (by literally uncovering) to retrieve the key to a deadly computer virus from a private commune as Casey and Lester fend for themselves from inside prison walls.
Continuing its roll and likely one of the stronger, funnier outings of Chuck season 5, "Chuck Vs. The Hack-Off" scrapes by with only a few minor quibbles.
After a certain period of loyalty to a TV show, particularly one that’s been through as much heartbreak and confusion as the five seasons of Chuck, we all come to terms with certain facts. Chuck actually left us in quite a narrative pickle by the end of “Chuck Vs. The Business Trip,” with both Casey and Lester behind bars, though we know that the truncated last season wouldn’t...

Seems strange that they're going through all this trouble now, given that Sacha Baron Cohen moved on from Ali G, like, ten years ago. But the fictional character's southern English "hometown," Staines, is apparently changing its name to Staines-on-Thames, in an attempt to polish its reputation. Comically enough, during Ali G's heyday the people of Staines couldn't have been more overjoyed at their newfound relevance. In 2002, an article in the Telegraph reported that Ali G was to be named as the town's new ambassador: "The local council is to produce brochures highlighting Staines' significance as the birthplace and continued residence of the comic character, who was educated locally and claims membership of the 'West Staines Massive' street gang." But noooo. Now Colin Davis, Spelthorne Borough Council's cabinet member for economic development, had this to say about Ali G's [...]...

Question: Your Puck poll was fun and everything, but do you have any actual intel about who he’ll be dating post-Lauren on Glee? —Jen
Ausiello: I’ll say this: In the wake of Zizes, Puck — while revisiting familiar romantic waters from Season 1 — finds a new woman. And that, my friends, is a riddle wrapped in an enigma.
Question: A few weeks ago Chris Colfer tweeted that he was filming something for...

The miniature song Owls: An Epitaph – halting, dissonant, weird – is the most powerful corrective I know to the image of Elgar as moustachioed imperialist. Listen and tell me what you think
A quick Elgar discovery for the weekend, after a sneak preview of John Bridcut's film about the composer, Elgar: The Man Behind the Mask, scheduled to be broadcast on BBC4 on 12 November. Bridcut creates some striking scenes with some great Elgarians – Colin Davis, Edward Gardner, Anthony Payne, Michael Kennedy, David Owen Norris – listening to their favourite Elgar works. A simple idea, but it's moving to see the sunlit magic of the soloist's first notes in the Violin Concerto reflected in Colin Davis's smile, or Michael Kennedy's rapt contemplation as he hears the raw melancolia of Sospiri.
Most revelatory of all, at least for me, was watching Mark Elder listen to Elgar's Owls: An Epitaph (one of the...
