In “We Strangers,” Rayelle (Kirby) confesses to her mother (Tina Lifford) that she doesn’t have dreams. Perhaps she doesn’t have time for them, or else she’s simply too exhausted to hang onto anything else in her head after spending her days as a cleaning lady, monitoring her every move so as not to become any part of the mess she picks up for other people. Still, this isn’t to say she can’t have fantasies in Anu Valia’s absorbing character study, except like everything else her life, they’re not for herself when her observational skills lead some to think she’s psychic.
After honing her craft directing prestige TV shows such as “The Afterparty” and “Shrill,” Valia makes an aesthetically striking feature debut that may impress even more with the clear eyes she brings to the trickle effect of privilege, envisioning the ability to...

HBO's series about the young and pretty people who execute complex financial trades during the day and get into even more complex adventures after hours has thrilled audiences since its debut in 2020.
Industry, created by Mickey Down and Konrad Kay, follows the action at Pierpoint & Co., an investment bank based in London. The show features a large cast led by Yasmin (Marisa Abela) and Harper (Myha'la Herrold), with Ken Leong as Eric, their boss.
The show, produced by Bad Wolf Productions and which HBO and the BBC share, draws its tensions from dramatic moments of trading machinations and the characters' often messy personal lives.

Unlike a movie, a TV show is not generally meant to be consumed in a single sitting. It is, at least in theory, designed to be enjoyed episode by episode. So having already celebrated the best series of the year (and the best TV performances), we’re here now to highlight a few individual chapters that particularly stood out to us from our hundreds and hundreds of hours of viewing.
As a rule, we excluded any title that had already made either of our individual top 10s. (Sorry, Richie episode of The Bear. And “Long, Long Time” from The Last of Us. And half this season of Succession. Half this season of Reservation Dogs. And, and, and …) This was in part to save ourselves the trouble of singing praises we’ve already sung so many times before, but mostly in an effort to spread the love. For the same reasons,...

A list of the 10 best TV performances of the year could be filled exclusively with actors from Succession, Reservation Dogs and Beef, the top three shows shared by both of our Best of 2023 lists. But what fun would that be? You already know that Sarah Snook and Devery Jacobs and Steven Yeun are great. Or you should.
That’s why, when Angie and I set out to do this list, we started with the simple rule: “Nothing from either of our Top 10 lists.” Those performances and those shows have been celebrated amply, and we wanted to cover as many of the year’s standouts as possible.
Oh, and if it seems like most of our favorite performances of the year were from women? You don’t know the half of it. Had we had more time or space, we would have loved to write about Aunjanue Ellis (Justified: City Primeval...

Disney’s reputation is notoriously squeaky clean.
The beloved company has provided family-friendly fun for decades, with live-action favorites and animated classics spanning back to the 1930s.
As a powerful force in the industry and one of Hollywood’s biggest studios, the company expanded its reach over the years with film distribution companies, like Touchstone Pictures, Miramax, Searchlight Pictures and Buena Vista Distribution.
The movies often featured more adult themes than one would expect from the company. Because they are published by subsidiaries, the titles are all only indirectly Disney-related – but they still fall under the major studio’s umbrella anyway.

Henry Winkler was an acclaimed television actor well before “Barry,” but his performance as Gene Cousineau, the acting coach who became something of a paternal role model to Bill Hader’s hitman Barry Berkman, brought him to all new creative heights.
In an interview with “Today” on NBC, the actor admitted that he wouldn’t have been able to take on the role in all its “texture” and complexity without first working with a therapist.
The actor has been open about the emotional toll performing the character took on him, and admitted to Willie Geist that he “could not have done ‘Barry’ without having met” a therapist who helped him unlock the emotions needed to pull off the part.
Winkler’s Cousineau is a challenging figure. Self-absorbed and even narcissistic, the character has managed to cut off industry friends and is teaching a group of acting students who worship him when he and Barry meet.

While Hollywood writers are back at work, media companies have suspended negotiations with striking actors over a new contract. The fourth and final season of Barry was unlike its previous three, with the HBO comedy becoming darker and deadlier as hitman Barry Berkman (co-creator Bill Hader) reaches his endgame. Yet the Television Academy’s love for the show didn’t waver; after winning nine Emmys in its first three seasons — including lead actor wins for Bill Hader and a supporting actor trophy for Henry Winkler — Barry returns to competition with 11 nominations, including four for Hader (for acting, directing, writing and producing the series) and individual nods for supporting actors Winkler and Anthony Carrigan.

Speaking with THR the day of the nominations announcement, Hader details how the writing team figured out that a midseason eight-year time jump was the best way to tackle the end of Barry’s story, telegraphs his disappointment that co-stars Sarah Goldberg and Stephen Root were passed over for Emmy noms, and reiterates that...

“It was more like shooting a movie than a TV series,” declares cinematographer Carl Herse about the final season of HBO’s dark comedy “Barry.” He worked on all eight episodes of the show’s final season alongside co-creator and star Bill Hader, who directed all of the installments. For his work this season, he is nominated for Best Cinematography for a Single Camera Series, his second consecutive nomination in that category. In an exclusive interview with Gold Derby (watch the video above), Herse describes working side by side with Hader on the Emmy-winning show’s final season.
Working with same director on the whole season of a show, Herse argues, streamlined the experience of filming. “For us it was a very clean way of working because we had total control,” he says. “We have a very similar sensibility, creatively. So we are able to attack the whole season as this one long story.

Gold Derby can exclusively reveal that Henry Winkler is entering the “Barry” episode “bestest place on earth” as his 2023 Emmy Award submission for Best Comedy Supporting Actor. This entry aired on April 16, 2023 and is the second episode of the HBO show’s fourth and final season.
In this installment, Winkler’s character Gene Cousineau gives Lon O’Neil (Patrick Fischler) a heavily embellished retelling of his history with Barry (Bill Hader). Sally (Sarah Goldberg) confronts Gene about not disclosing Barry’s murder of Janice (Paula Newsome) and Gene suggests she begin teaching to cope with her trauma.

Critics’ Conversation: Despite Heartening Inclusions, Emmy Voters Struggle to Broaden Their Horizons
Daniel Fienberg: The Television Academy has done it again! And I’m not sure I mean that as a compliment.
I’m happy to see two of my favorite comedies of the past year, Succession and The White Lotus, dominating the nominations. On the drama side.
And I’m glad to see Emmy voters finally recognized that my absolute favorite show of last year, Reservation Dogs, exists. Or exists enough to receive one nomination in the sound category.
And how nice that Emmy voters also noticed Dead Ringers. For cinematography. But somehow left Rachel Weisz out of the Lead Actress in a Limited Series category.
Once again, it was an Emmy nomination slate that suggests voters watch a half-dozen shows, which allows dozens more to slip through the cracks. Nowhere is that clearer than the supporting categories, where nearly every actor from The White Lotus got nominated (Nearly… sorry...

Harrison Ford was widely expected to land his first Emmy nomination this year for his two roles in Shrinking and 1923. Instead, he failed to earn a nod for either performance despite Shrinking landing multiple nods. 1923, on the other hand, is just one of several Taylor Sheridan shows that were shut out from this year’s Emmy nominations (no nods for stars Ford or Helen Mirren), with hit series Yellowstone failing to land any Emmy noms for the second year in a row and new entry Tulsa King only scoring one nod, for stunt coordination.
In a recent The Hollywood Reporter cover story, Sheridan shrugged off his Emmys snub streak, suggesting he values his shows promoting certain ideals instead and bluntly adding, “you can keep your fucking award.”
Other series that failed to score any nominations, despite experts’ predictions, include the final season of FX’s Snowfall, never recognized by the...

The Little Show That Could did on Wednesday morning as the Amazon Freevee word-of-mouth sensation “Jury Duty” completed the most improbable run for top comedy series in recent memory (if not ever) by landing a spot among the big boys and girls – becoming the Andrea Riseborough of this Emmy season. Moreover, its its “star” James Marsden generated an equally surprising achievement with a supporting comedy actor nod today.
As recently as late June, “Jury Duty” stood 17th in the Gold Derby combined odds for top comedy series at 100/1. Its final odds placed at only 13th, still at 100/1. But the show that premiered in April on a streaming service few had even heard of made waves even immediately and kept right on making them through this wildly unlikely grassroots Emmy run. It was described as the world’s first feelgood prank show – “The Office” meets “The Truman Show.” The premise: A...

In the fictional world created on “Succession,” Logan Roy may be dead and Waystar RoyCo may have been sold off to a Nordic streaming company. But in the real world, or at least the world according to Emmy voters, the Roy family still wields immense power.
And while the AFC Richmond soccer team coached by Ted Lasso on the comedy series named after him may have fallen short in its quest to finish in first place, the show itself remains the champion of its league, aka the Emmy comedy categories.
In nominations that were announced on Wednesday morning, the reigning drama and comedy series winners topped their respective categories, with “Succession” landing a personal-best 27 nominations to lead all drama series and “Ted Lasso” picking up 21 to handily beat all comedies.

Once again, the Emmy Awards nominations don’t include a slew of TV favorites. Among the most notable snubs: Harrison Ford in both Best Comedy Supporting Actor (“Shrinking”) and Best Drama Actor (“1923”), Paramount’s red-hot “Yellowstone” and 2022 nominees Christina Ricci (“Yellowjackets”) and Steve Martin (“Only Murders in the Building”). HBO’s “Love and Death” missed the mark for Best Limited Series and its lead Elizabeth Olsen, as did National Geographic’s “A Small Light” and star Bel Powley.
Below, we enumerate the top 50 Emmys snubs in our estimation. These were the shows and performers that we thought had a strong chance to number among this year’s nominees. Let us know if there are others missing from this list that merit mentioning by sounding off in the comments section.

[Editor’s Note: The following story contains spoilers for the “Barry” series finale]
The final season of “Barry” earned rave reviews, with critics praising Bill Hader — who directed all eight episodes — for skillfully guiding his dark comedy towards a fittingly bleak conclusion. But as it turns out, Hader was concerned that things were getting too bleak.
Appearing on an episode of Variety’s “Making a Scene,” Hader explained that he had to reshoot part of the series finale to remove what he came to see as an inappropriate moment of positivity. When NoHo Hank (Anthony Carrigan) kidnaps Sally (Sarah Goldberg) and her son, Barry’s personal life finally collides with his criminal network in an irreversible way. While Hank is eventually murdered by Fuches (Stephen Root), Hader says he originally wanted him to spend some of his last moments bonding with Sally over their shared experiences with Barry.
“I initially made a massive mistake in his death… I thought Sally and NoHo Hank...

Lisa Ann Walter is hoping for a first-ever Emmy bid as season two of “Abbott Elementary” looks to up its awards success from the first outing, which won three Emmys. ABC’s mockumentary season comes from multi-hyphenate Quinta Brunson, who stars in the show as well as creates it, writes it, and produces it. It follows a group of public school teachers who work in one of the worst schools in the country but their love for teaching makes them stay to try and better the school and its students. The show is full of wonderful comedic performances, not least from “The Parent Trap” star Walter.
Walter plays second-grade teacher Melissa Schemmenti, who is close with Sheryl Lee Ralph‘s Barbara. Both teachers are veterans at Abbott Elementary, while some of Melissa’s connections outside of school are deemed questionable. Walter has a lot of fun as Melissa, who has...

For the final season of Barry, cinematographer Carl Herse had the opportunity to work alongside only one director, Bill Hader, for the entire season. After an escape from prison midseason, the story jumps forward 10 years, which presented an interesting challenge for Herse, who needed to visually “express that time passed, but still make the show feel like Barry.” Their solution was to focus on Barry (Hader) and Sally (Sarah Goldberg), along with their son, rather than all of the major characters, and build out from there. Although ending the show is bittersweet for Herse, he says he couldn’t be happier with how it ends.

This story about Bill Hader and Seth Meyers and “Barry” and “Late Night” first appeared in the Comedy Series issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
The moment Bill Hader and Seth Meyers met on “Saturday Night Live,” Meyers immediately understood that Hader was a film nerd. “The first time Bill came into my office after he got hired, when he left, I somehow had a list of 12 foreign films to watch,” Meyers said during a lengthy joint interview conducted before the writers’ strike, the full version of which you can watch here or at the bottom of this article. “It’s like the guy from the video store following you around,” Hader added with a laugh.
And yet, even as the two became close friends on “SNL” (and an iconic duo via Hader’s Stefon on Weekend Update), Meyers could never have predicted that Hader would make something like “Barry.

Hollywood and the truth aren't on speaking terms; it's a business founded on make-believe, after all. That's why it's the perfect setting for "Barry." I've written before that the series questions whether people can truly change, and its answer is that most settle for just pretending to be somebody else. In the HBO series Barry, some of the nuanced characters present in the narrative had a big impact on both the plot and Barry’s personal life. Gene Cousineau and Barry’s girlfriend Sally were two of the most important characters on the show since their presence in this entertaining dark comedy raised the bar and added complexity to the show. Gene Cousineau was one of the most complex characters, with a contradictory nature and a hilarious comic approach. Every time he appeared on screen, he had the ability to change the mood of the story. Viewers could go from hating him to sympathizing with him, finding his character engaging and very human. In fact, all the characters in Barry were portrayed as very human, highlighting the basic nature of humanity and our propensity to make mistakes. However, Gene Cousineau excelled at creating perilous situations for himself, making him one...

One of my favorite episodes of "The Sopranos" is "The Test Dream," in which Tony (James Gandolfini) falls asleep in a hotel room and has a surreal dream. Whenever "The Sopranos" needed to be especially foreboding, it went to dream sequences. Season 6 features a multi-episode one when Tony, in a coma and on death's door, has a vision of an alternate life for himself as a law-abiding middle-aged salesman. That's why when "Barry" started going surreal in season 3 — our eponymous protagonist (Bill Hader) saw himself standing on a beach alongside all his victims — my mind jumped to "The Sopranos."
The two HBO shows have more in common than you'd think, down to the same guiding question: can people change? "The Sopranos" is at its core about a man in therapy, a process that is supposed to help you reshape yourself. "Barry...

As soon as "Barry" jumped ahead eight years and gave Sally and Barry a son, one thing's been made clear: Sally's not that great of a mother. She's not outright mean to him, sure, but she's definitely checked out of this relationship. Throughout "tricky legacies," it's Barry who's putting in all the effort to raise their kid, and Sally can't be bothered to step in even when Barry's parenting methods skew towards insanity.
When Barry leaves Sally alone with John in the episode "the wizard," her parenting skills are revealed to be even worse than we thought. Not only does she make him the world's worst grilled cheese sandwich, but she pours vodka into the seven-year-old's drink to calm him down.
It's hard to be too mad at her for all this. The Sally we follow throughout the second half of season 4 is...

This article contains spoilers for the "Barry" finale as well as "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang."
Satire is one of the oldest artistic impulses; to mock and examine whatever systems, order, or supposed truths exist in any given era. Although cinema is a relatively young medium, it's no surprise that an enormous number of satires of the film and television industries have been made nearly since movies began.
HBO's "Barry," which concluded its four-season run this past Sunday night, proudly belongs to this long-standing tradition of biting the hand that feeds it, seeing as "Barry" is a highly cinematic TV series set in and around Hollywood. The grand satiric irony baked into the show's premise is the idea of a professional assassin, Barry Berkman, arriving in L.A. and deciding to try and have an acting career. The latent joke is, of course, that the showbiz world is just as morally...

This article contains spoilers for the "Barry" series finale.
I have a soft spot for Sally Reed (Sarah Goldberg), the aspiring diva starlet of "Barry." Sure, she's selfish and has poor judgment, but from all the past abuse she's suffered, you understand how she got like this. Unlike the rest of the cast, there's always a feeling that Sally could truly learn to be better, so it's extra disappointing that she rarely does. To paraphrase her forming teacher Gene Cousineau (Henry Winkler), "She's deeply human." So, I was pleased that the series finale, "wow," gave her as happy an ending as possible.
It's important to remember Sally's backstory when viewing the finale. She fled from her abusive first husband Sam (Joe Massingill) by leaving in the middle of the night. In "wow," she repeats this after Barry declines to turn himself in. Sally had previously sworn she'd never be with a violent man again,...

[This story contains major spoilers from the series finale of Barry, “Wow.”]
It’d be understandable if you expected things not to work out for Sarah Goldberg’s Sally Reed in the series finale of HBO’s Barry.
After all, things hadn’t been going her way for a while. In season three, just as she finally achieved the success she’d yearned for, the rug was pulled out from under her when her show is canceled (and so is she, after a career-ending outburst and her association with her hitman ex-boyfriend Barry Berkman, played by writer-director-star Bill Hader). In season four, Sally is a shell of herself — or at least she thinks so. Viewers saw her find her way back to Los Angeles and follow Gene Cousineau’s (Henry Winkler) path, pivoting from acting to teaching acting. And while it’s something she’s good at, it’s not the thing she wants. Her ego, eventually, gets in her way once again.

Just before he confronts the gangsters who’ve abducted his family, Barry Berkman (Bill Hader) takes a moment in the parking lot. “Lord, I’m gonna die tonight. Please give me the strength to sacrifice myself so that my son can live a long and pious life,” he prays. “And that by doing this, all my sins will be washed and I will be redeemed in your eyes, and I will be able to sit next to you in my rightful place in the kingdom of heaven for all eternity. Amen.”
As it turns out, the encounter never actually comes to that. Barry’s barely out of the car when Fuches (Stephen Root) ushers Barry’s unharmed son John (Zachary Golinger) straight to him, then disappears into the night without a word. Hader‘s face registers less relief than disappointment. Dying for John would’ve been hard, but it would’ve been straightforward.
