A teenager in 70s New Zealand dreams of starting a band in Jonathan Ogilvie’s nostalgic comedy, which opens Rotterdam’s international film festival
Jonathan Ogilvie is the New Zealand film-maker who made the gangster drama The Tender Hook (2008) and also Lone Wolf (2021), a postmodern spin on Conrad’s The Secret Agent. Now he hits a lighter, gentler and much more personal note in this coming-of-age comedy, which opens the International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR) – a nostalgiafest romance from the 70s post-punk era about a kid in New Zealand mooching around in his uncool school uniform, hanging out in the local record shop (which still has its prog-era name of Middle Earth Records) and dreaming of starting a punk band called the Daleks – though wondering if just Daleks sounds cooler — and obsessing about an unattainably sexy girl who sneers at him.

There’s a reason to watch the New York Jets again, and it’s not to see a train wreck. The Jets swung a dramatic trade for quarterback Aaron Rodgers, a Super Bowl champion and four-time NFL Mvp in 18 seasons with the Green Bay Packers, in the hope of ending a 12-season playoff drought and a skid of seven straight losing seasons. Fans could see Rodgers in action with Gang Green when the NFL preseason starts Thursday, August 3 at the Hall of Fame Game in Canton, Ohio, where the Jets face the Cleveland Browns in primetime on NBC. Two days later, coach Don Coryell and players Rondé Barber, Chuck Howley, Joe Klecko, Darrelle Revis, Ken Riley, Joe Thomas, Zach Thomas and DeMarcus Ware will be enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in a ceremony Saturday, August 5, on ESPN and NFL Network. Hollywood superstar and soccer club savior Ryan Reynolds has been spending plenty of time in the UK of late and today he was snapped with Great British Bake Off hosts Prue Leith and Paul Hollywood, leading to fevered speculation that he will appear in the celeb version of the Channel 4 hit.
The Deadpool star and owner of just-promoted Wrexham AFC posted a picture on Twitter of his getting up close to the British hosts, with the caption “Full and unconditional hug of pure serotonin.”
The post has of course led to speculation that Reynolds will take part in the celeb version of Channel 4’s most-watched show, which will film over the summer and likely air early next year. The civilian version will be released in the weeks prior and has been Channel 4’s most-watched show since it was picked up from the BBC in 2017.

Taskmaster’s weekly prize task involves each contestant bringing in an item that responds to the same prompt (Most Powerful Smell/Best Chair/Most Important Document…) in the hope of winning the lot at the end of the episode. It’s the first task of every show, a chance for the comedians to land a punchline early doors, and points-wise, to bag what series 15 runner-up Ivo Graham might refer to as “a Sweet Five”.
All that time to plan the perfect response! What a boon for swots and “Be Prepared” types, you might think. Sometimes. And sometimes not. The capricious nature of the Taskmaster’s scoring logic often finds painstakingly honed prize task entries sent away with a single point while zero-thought efforts delivered with conviction sail off with the big money. Imagine being someone who’s never seen Taskmaster. A virgin to joy. Someone whose eyes have never before drunk in the sight of a banana-Noel Fielding hiding in a fruit bowl, of Joe Wilkinson presenting the mayor of Chesham with 42 Calippo ice lollies, or of Charlotte Ritchie stumbling around a golf course blindfolded like an adorable Minion. What promise awaits! The prize tasks, the flashes of creative genius, the glorious failures… Alex Horne’s challenge-based comedy panel show is one of the most reliably entertaining TV programmes ever made.

Within an Egyptian underworld, renowned chariot racer Thut (Joe Thomas) lives satisfied with his status as a local celebrity and bachelor. That changes when he’s selected to marry Princess Nefer (Elanor Tomlinson), which includes looking after a wedding ring he must keep safe under penalty of losing his eyes and tongue. Despite neither party wishing to marry, they must journey into 21st-century London when the ring is stolen by archaeologist Lord Sylvester Carnaby (Hugh Bonneville).
Director Juan Jesús García Galocha makes his feature debut with Mummies, a Spanish animation which has subsequently been dubbed for English audiences. What unfolds is an 88-minute feature with few surprises, including obvious gags such as texting via chiselling and the same pose being repeatedly used.

Taskmaster seems to be one of those magically perfect TV shows, but of course the root of its genius isn’t magic at all: it’s a whip-smart combination of Alex Horne’s original format, the comedic force of nature that is Greg Davies in the role of the Taskmaster, and relentlessly good casting.
As we’ve said before, there’s no such thing as a bad series of Taskmaster, and we’re sure Series 15 will be no different, but until it arrives, what should fans fill their time watching?
Take a look at these similarly delightful TV shows, including plenty featuring previous Taskmaster series alumni:
Man Down (Channel 4)
Starring the Taskmaster himself Greg Davies, this Channel 4 sitcom centres on his character Dan, a frankly terrible schoolteacher who is having an infinitely amusing midlife crisis. As you can see from the clip above, it’ll please fans of Davies’ scathing takedowns,...

Have British crime dramas been boiled down to a formula? Take a forbidding rural location, populate it with miserable, suspicious people, and explore some kind of tragic but enigmatic crime that took place years in the past. It’s a winning framework that has formed the basis of many of the UK’s best recent TV series – as well as a lot of generic dross. Channel 4’s bleak new addition to the genre, the Wales-set mystery The Light in the Hall (Welsh title Y Golau), feels closer to this latter category.
The story picks up 18 years after Ela, a teenager, suddenly went missing. A local gardener, Joe Thomas (played by Misfits and Game of Thrones star Iwan Rheon), confessed to her murder at the time but was unable, or unwilling, to recall some details of the crime; a body was never found. In the first episode of The Light in the Hall,...

If you thought We Are Not Alone was going to be the kind of comforting comedy you get from Ghosts you’ll quickly find out you’re wrong. The opening scene, in which the main character Stewart ends up suddenly covered in his best friend’s innards after he gets crushed by an alien messaging device, is a pretty big clue that this is a departure into a slightly more grown-up territory.
This new feature-length Dave comedy doesn’t waste any time: we’re straight into the action, discovering Earth has been invaded and conquered by the Gu’uns, a blue, large-foreheaded alien race with Very Big Guns. The Gu’uns don’t muck about – their takeover has included blowing up New Zealand, nixing everyone’s mobile phone signal and blasting the Chancellor of England into space (so it’s not all bad news), and in a brief appearance from...

"The only way to get it back is to… go the world of the living." Warner Bros UK has revealed an official trailer for an animated kids movie called Mummies, another of these cheesy direct-to-video creations that is somehow getting a theatrical release in the UK next year. "Warner Bros. Pictures presents a production of 4Cats Pictures Sl, Anangu Grup Slu and Moomios Movie Aie, with the collaboration of Atresmedia Cine, with the participation of Movistar+ and with the collaboration of TV3." This clearly borrows the character design and family setup from the popular animated series Hotel Transylvania, but with mummies instead. The mummy family ends up in present-day London and embarks on a wacky and hilarious journey in search of an old ring that was stolen by a British archaeologist. Yes, teach kids what really happened! The English-language voice cast includes Joe Thomas, Eleanor Tomlinson, Santiago Winder, Celia Imrie,...

In another life, Stevie Nicks would have been a music-film editor. “I think I’m really good at it,” she says one Friday evening, calling from her home in Los Angeles. Her canine companion Lily is begging for her attention with a toy as Nicks reflects on her second life. “I can only say this about a few things.”
She’s had plenty of experience, working closely with director Joe Thomas on concert films for Fleetwood Mac (2004’s Live in Boston), her late friend Tom Petty (2006’s Live From Gainesville), and most recently,...

While The Titan Games premiered last year as a competition totally driven by amateurs, creator (and host) Dwayne Johnson wanted to shake things up a bit in the show’s second season by introducing some pro athletes into the mix, giving the amateurs even more motivation … and challenges. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s “The Titan Games” debuts its second season Monday, an installment that features former New York Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz among the six pro-athlete competitors that the show’s “everyday” contestants go head-to-head with in hopes of winning the “Titan Champion” title and a $100,000 prize.
Fans could smell the new level of intensity The Rock was cooking up for Season 2 of his NBC competition series when he announced the addition of elite athletes — including Cruz, Claressa Shields, Joe Thomas, Cruz, Hannah Teter, Jessie Graff and Tyron Woodley — as an obstacle for “The Titan Games'” amateur contestants. And if the everyday people vs. pros aspect, a pro-wrestling legend as host, and a humongous set piece for the final challenge made you draw a comparison between The Rock’s series and the network’s short-lived Hulk Hogan-hosted “American Gladiators” reboot, Cruz is here to vouch for how different the two are.

The sequel to the film of the sitcom, The Inbetweeners 2 bravely wrestles with the question of which is more revolting, a faceful of someone else’s urine or a faceful of someone else’s faeces. Judging by all the vomiting that Will (Simon Bird) does after he receives the latter, the answer is faeces. But that’s not all the Brits abroad have to put up with in Australia. Neil (Blake Harrison) kills a dolphin, Simon (Joe Thomas) gets beaten up, and when their car runs out of fuel in the fiercely hot outback, it looks – for two whole hours – as if they will all die of dehydration.

BBC comedy White Gold first hit our screens in 2017. The show, which tells the story of cockney wide-boy Vincent Swan and his crew of double-glazing salesmen, was an immediate success. White Gold was commissioned for a 2nd season shortly after the first wrapped, and despite fans having to wait over 2 years to see it (more on the reason behind the delay shortly), they’ve clearly not lost their appetite for a dose of 1980’s nostalgia in the meantime. To find out more about the hilarious show and its stellar cast of Ed Westwick, Joe Thomas and James Buckley, read

Thunder Road’s Basil Iwanyk is producing with Xeitgeist’s Joe Thomas, Samarth Sahni (Hotel Mumbai) and Patel. Production is set to start in spring 2019 in Mumbai.
The script is by Patel, Paul Angunawela and John Collee and was developed with the assistance of S’ya Concept.
Set in contemporary India, Monkey Man follows the Kid (Patel) who emerges from prison to take on a world enmeshed in corporate greed and eroding spiritual values. Iwanyk calls it a “vibrant, thrilling and above all entertaining story.”

Slumdog Millionaire breakout Patel won a BAFTA for 2016’s Lion, also scoring Oscar and Golden Globe nominations. There hasn’t been a wealth of comedies this summer, but The Festival provides all the laughs we need, in one of the funniest films released for some while. To mark the occasion, we sat down with lead star Joe Thomas and director Iain Morris, who are collaborating yet again after their work on The Inbetweeners.
We discuss with them the hilarious ensemble, with a cast consisting of Jemaine Clement, Nick Frost and Noel Fielding, while they also speak about the challenges of not corpsing on set when surrounded by such funny people. They tell us what their favourite of all the music festivals is, and how hard it was to focus and remain sober, when filming a movie in such a carefree environment.
Finally we move on to The Inbetweeners, discussing with the pair whether they still enjoy being stopped on the street, or having things like ‘bus wanker’ shouted at them from afar,...

The Inbetweeners’ Joe Thomas crowdsurfs a weekend of misadventures and self-abasing nudity in Iain Morris’s likable comedy
Director Iain Morris first enlivened this quiet-to-dead corner of the cinematic silly season with the astonishingly successful Inbetweeners diptych. Having packed those boys off with a happy ending (stop sniggering), he now attempts something only slightly different: bussing Joe Thomas – perhaps the most immediately available ’Tweener – and a grab bag of emergent talent to the Leeds music festival to recreate this muddily parochial rite-of-passage for an audience too young, too late or too worldly-wise to snap up day passes for this year’s festivities. Chasing the youth pound this flagrantly is always a risk, as those who suffered The Bad Education Movie can attest, yet The Festival’s pursuit remains broadly likable, and Morris again backs it up with real comedy nous.

From Terrence Malick’s Song to Song to Taking Woodstock, film-makers are often afraid of getting their hands dirty. That can’t be said, however, of new film The Festival
When it comes to music festivals, we tend to only remember the highs – so let new comedy The Festival remind you what you’re not missing. Partly filmed at last year’s Leeds festival, it is brought to you by the makers of The Inbetweeners movies and stars Joe Thomas, which should already give you a clue: long drops, mud, bodily fluids, crowds, anxiety, confusion. “I just want to go home, have a proper shower and a poo,” says Thomas in the trailer. This is the festival experience as it really is – somewhere between a dream trip and a prison sentence. But, so often, cinema fails to capture that spirit.

MGM has released the final trailer for Operation Finale; the story of how a Mossad agent captures the Nazi officer, Adolf Eichmann.
The film is based on the team that hunted down and captured Adolf Eichmann, one of the major architects of the Holocaust.
