The professional wrestler formerly known as WWE’s Dolph Ziggler, Nic Nemeth is back and making waves this week after an appearance in New Japan Pro Wrestling, and he’s also starring in a horror short that serves as a unique promo for the next phase of his career.
The 3-minute short is titled “Wanted Man,” and it was directed by genre filmmaker Maggie Levin. Nic Nemeth plays the titular “Wanted Man” in the bloody short, a Kurt Russell/Ash Williams type dealing with the zombie apocalypse.
The short film starts with Nemeth locked up in the back of a police car, and his day gets worse when a Sam Raimi-style Deadite invasion shows up to the party. From there, Nemeth heads into a bar where the fight gets really bloody, ending with one hell of a gory finishing move.
Watch “Wanted Man” below and stay tuned for more from Nic Nemeth in Njpw.

The Writers Guild of America has been on strike for over 100 days now, and the Screen Actors Guild – American Federation of Television and Radio Artists have been striking for just over a month. The dual strike is the result of the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers failing to negotiate an acceptable contract with both unions, with issues like artificial intelligence, minimum staffing requirements, and residual payments from streaming platforms just a fraction of issues the AMPTP refused to address during initial contract negotiations. Recently, the AMPTP and the WGA have been back at the table for renegotiations, which means there has been a lot of speculation regarding what's been said and whether or not the strikes will soon be coming to an end. This article is a reminder that unless what you're reading is coming directly from the WGA or SAG-AFTRA, take it with a pound of salt.

Meredith Stiehm will seek a second two-year term as president of WGA West in the fall election, and the other top officials of the guild will also seek reelection.
Justine Bateman, the writer-director and former “Family Ties” star, is running for a spot on the WGA West board. Bateman has become outspoken on the need for tight regulation of artificial intelligence.
The guild announced its preliminary list of nominees on Wednesday. Stiehm, who has been active in both the agency campaign and the current strike, will run against challenger Rich Talarico, a “Key and Peele” writer who has faulted the guild for not doing more to fight back against the release of free clips of the show on YouTube.
Michele Mulroney is running for reelection as vice president, and Betsy Thomas is seeking another term as secretary-treasurer. They will run against Isaac Gomez and Jeffrey Thompson, respectively.

While you wait for V/H/S/85 later this year, V/H/S/99 has hit Blu-ray and DVD. Among the extras for the fifth installment in the found footage horror franchise is an audio commentary moderated by Bloody Disgusting’s own The Boo Crew Podcast hosts Trevor Shand and Leone D’Antonio.
All six filmmakers participate for their respective segments: Maggie Levin for “Shredding,” Johannes Roberts for “Suicide Bid,” Flying Lotus for “Ozzy’s Dungeon,” Tyler MacIntyre for “The Gawkers,” and Vanessa & Joseph Winter for “To Hell and Back.”
Here are seven things I learned from the V/H/S/99 commentary…
1. The film almost didn’t have a wraparound story.
Wraparound segments are traditionally used to make an anthology feel of one piece rather than a random collection of shorts, but the producers originally intended to forgo the framing device on V/H/S/99.
It was later decided to use the increasingly ambitious stop-motion...

Released through the Shudder streaming service last October, the horror anthology film V/H/S/99 quickly became the most-watched film in the history of Shudder. It’s a good thing they already greenlit another sequel – V/H/S/85 – for this year. But while we wait to see how V/H/S/85 is going to turn out, Rlje Films has given V/H/S/99 a Blu-ray, DVD, and steelbook release – and copies can be purchased at This Link.
The story segments that make up V/H/S/99 were directed by Maggie Levin (Into The Dark: My Valentine), Johannes Roberts (Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City), Flying Lotus (Kuso), Tyler MacIntyre (Tragedy Girls), and Joseph & Vanessa Winter (Deadstream). Here’s the synopsis: V/H/S/99 harkens back to the final punk rock analog days of VHS, while taking one giant leap forward into the hellish new millennium. In V/H/S/99, a thirsty teenager’s home video leads to a series of horrifying revelations.

History repeats itself. When the Shudder streaming service revived the V/H/S/ found footage horror franchise with V/H/S/94 last year, it really paid off for them. V/H/S/94 set viewership records and became the service’s biggest movie premiere ever. That’s why we got V/H/S/99 this year. And Shudder has a hit on their hands again.
Shudder sent out a press release to let us know V/H/S/99 “debuted to record numbers in its opening weekend. Through its first four days of release, the film registered 28 more unique viewers than the previous record holder, V/H/S/94, which premiered on Shudder in 2021. It’s a good thing they already greenlit another sequel – V/H/S/85 – for next year.

Halloween is the perfect night for scary movies. Don’t let the hype dissuade you of this fact. The clocks have gone back, it’s darker earlier and enough sugar races through the average bloodstream to terrify anyone.

Plot: Five terrifying tales are unearthed on a VHS tape that hasn’t been watched since 1999.
Review: Like all anthology films, V/H/S/99 is a mixed bag. It contains five separate stories, and as in every movie in this franchise, some are great, and some are mediocre. However, to the movie’s credit, none of the stories are bad, meaning that V/H/S/99 adds up to a pretty solid addition to the franchise.
Two of the stories are brilliant. My favorite, by a long shot, is the second one, Suicide Bid, written and directed by Johannes Roberts, who did 47 Meters Down and Resident Evil: Welcome to Racoon City. In it, Ally Ioannides plays a sorority pledge eager to be liked. Her would-be sisters decide to play a prank on her, burying her alive in a coffin, only to abandon her when cops show up, intending to return later to dig her up.

Produced by Bloody Disgusting, the hit found footage horror franchise is back with V/H/S/99, now available exclusively on Shudder.
In V/H/S/99, the follow-up to last year’s hugely successful V/H/S/94 – #HailRaatma – a thirsty teenager’s home video leads to horrifying revelations. Capturing the final days of analog as it heads into a new millennium, V/H/S/99 delivers a punk rock attitude and wild horror throughout its five segments.
Why not celebrate accordingly? Let’s party like it’s 1999. We’re pairing each segment in V/H/S/99 with a horror movie from 1999, so you can keep the Y2K vibes going!
Kolobos – Pair with Maggie Levin’s “Shredding”
Levin’s opening segment in V/H/S/99 captures a ’90s MTV-style energy and aesthetic as it follows a group of pranksters with a Cky-like video series. The teens decide to break into an abandoned music venue for their latest mission for fame, and horror ensues.

The V/H/S franchise is the premiere horror anthology of its generation. Since the original’s debut in 2012, the movie spawned five sequels, one spinoff, and a Snapchat miniseries. V/H/S 99 is the latest of those sequels to arrive from Shudder, with another expected to arrive next year. The anthology followed a found footage theme before it began incorporating specific years into the mix in 2021. Doing so injected new life, as well as new horror directors, into the franchise. “I feel like V/H/S stakes a claim and really kicks off horror filmmakers in a special way,” says V/H/S 99 director and series newcomer Maggie Levin. The original movie alone is known to be the launching pad for current mainstays like Ti West, David Bruckner, and Adam Wingard, to name a few. “I was very aware that I was entering a legacy of groundbreaking ...

The "V/H/S" series lets filmmakers go wild. It's a part of the horror franchise's appeal. Good or bad, the directors rarely pull any punches with their stories. The latest addition to "V/H/S" goes back to 1999, with directors such as Maggie Levin ("My Valentine") and Johannes Roberts ("The Strangers: Prey at Night") at the helm of its anthology entries.
For "V/H/S/99," Levin helms "Shredding" and Roberts is behind "Suicide Bid." Levin's tale follows an obnoxious punk band facing serious consequences for their behavior, while Roberts tells a story of hazing gone wrong, and they both capture the nasty, dark spirit expected from the series by this point. Recently, Levin and Roberts told us about crafting their horror films, shooting in graveyards, and lessons learned from the franchise.

You don’t have to be a jaded Hollywood cynic to understand why the “V/H/S” franchise isn’t going anywhere. As any studio executive worth their salt would be quick to point out, a recognizable horror brand built around deliberately cheap production value with enough elasticity to accommodate new trends is a terrible thing to waste. That, combined with a direct-to-streaming release strategy that frees it from box office expectations, gives the long-running horror anthology series little incentive to improve.
You’re gonna get a new “V/H/S” movie just about every Halloween until the end of time, and you’re gonna like it. Then again, there are worse fates in life.
While “V/H/S/99” is a far cry from the original, it still manages to be far more fun than it has any right to be. By connecting its horror vignettes with trippy stop-motion sketches instead of a unifying plot device,...

The V/H/S series is back with its fifth installment, bringing the horror, the crazy and the fun, all in one nice, neat little package. I love anthology horror, so I am always going to be down for a new group of filmmakers telling new stories. V/H/S/99 brings 5 new tales to the series, ranging from scary to gross to freaking insane.

Back in 2012, “V/H/S” premiered at the Sundance Film Festival to give “Paranormal Activity” and the rest of the found footage horror sub-genre a run for its money. And now, after three sequels, a spin-off, and a Snapchat miniseries, the fifth installment of the series is upon us, “V/H/S/99.”
Fresh off its world premiere in the Midnight section of TIFF last month, the latest anthology film in the series features segments from Johannes Roberts, Vanessa & Joseph Winter, Maggie Levin, Tyler MacIntyre, and Flying Lotus.

Ahead of the streaming release of "V/H/S/99" this month, Shudder has announced the next installment of the franchise with "V/H/S/85." "Sinister" and "The Black Phone" director Scott Derrickson and "Hellraiser" and "The Night House" director David Bruckner will helm new segments in the found-footage anthology sequel along with Gigi Saul Guerrero ("Bingo Hell"), Natasha Kermani ("Lucky"), and Mike P. Nelson ("Wrong Turn"). Derrickson himself confirmed on Twitter that he has already filmed his segment for "V/H/S/85."
This will be the sixth movie in the main "V/H/S" series, after the original film and its first four sequels, "V/H/S/2," "V/H/S: Viral," "V/H/S/94," and "V/H/S/99." Since the VHS home video format hasn't exactly been in fashion in the 21st century, it makes sense that the series would go back in time to the 1980s with "V/H/S/85" rather than try and move forward into the 2000s.

The inescapable problem at the core of any omnibus or anthology film with multiple cooks in the kitchen is, by all design, things will be uneven. Yet V/H/S/99 is fun enough in the context of TIFF’s Midnight Madness—including standouts from the usually gross and reliable Flying Lotus and Johannes Roberts, whose film is genuinely terrifying before turning a bit silly in its final moments.
As for the others, Maggie Levin’s Shredding contains a frightening concept (a Blink 182-style punk band plays a show in an abandoned basement nightclub where concertgoers were trampled to death in a fire years ago). It also has a few big laughs making fun of the styles and punk angst of the era playing out in zines and, of course, on AOL.

I love horror anthology movies ... at least in theory. I really love the idea of an anthology — a series of short films tied together in one neat package. But the truth is, there are more bad horror anthologies than good. Even the best of the best almost always have at least one segment worth skipping. The "V/H/S" franchise might be the worst offender — there are five films in the series so far, and I can count the number of good segments on one hand. The best of the best is, without question, Timo Tjahjanto and Gareth Evans' "Safe Haven" from "V/H/S/2," a brilliantly-conceived and genuinely scary story about a death cult. But nothing else in the series has ever come close to that tale.
In fact, I've found the series so miss-heavy that I kind of gave up on it. And then came "V/H/S/94," which ended up being my favorite in the entire franchise.

The odds are not good for “V/H/S” — which is to say it’s the even-numbered entries in this horror omnibus franchise that have been by far the best to date. As No. 5, “V/H/S/99” unfortunately maintains that pattern, providing an uninspired extension of the series that had rebounded after a seven-year lull with last fall’s “V/H/S/94.”
That installment was typically uneven, but the better segments were terrific. Here, nothing stands out: The best episodes are merely good enough, and the worst just tiresome. Nonetheless, this brand has proven viewer appeal for genre streaming platform Shudder, where it should do well when launched in various territories on Oct. 20. Set in 1999 — the tail of the titular format’s commercial reign, since DVDs were introduced two years prior — the film is unlikely to be the series’ last.
If this “V/H/S” has any binding theme, it would appear to be bullying. All...

"V/H/S/" has been a formidable mainstay in the horror genre ever since its first entry back in 2012. Since then, three sequels have been released, with last year's "V/H/S/ 94" being exclusive to the genre streaming service Shudder. Despite the longevity of the franchise, it has never strayed away from its core creative manta: hire up-and-coming horror directors to direct a found-footage short film, then present them as long-lost videos that connect to a larger story. This draw helped launch the careers of several now-prominent genre directors, such as Radio Silence ("V/H/S/"), Timo Tjahjanto ("V/H/S/ 2"), Justin Benson ("V/H/S/: Viral"), and Chloe Okuno ("V/H/S/ 94").
