Norma and Ed seem to have finally found their happy ending. Nadine, still riding a high from Dr. Amp’s vlog, marches to Big Ed’s gas farm, golden sh-t shovel in hand, and releases Ed from their marriage. She claims to be “better” now. She only wants Ed to be happy. And then, to the sounds of Otis Redding wailing “I’ve Been Loving You Too Long,” Ed goes to the Double R Diner to take Norma into his arms. Momentary jeopardy arises when Norma must first dispense with Walter and his diner franchise plans. But while he waits,...

You may not realize it, but Lara Flynn Boyle’s Donna — the heart of the original series, the activated burgeoning girl detective, my one true love — returned to Twin Peaks Sunday.
Where exactly was she in the show? Well, it’s complicated. First, her face appeared in an old framed photo (of Laura and Donna, from the original series) sitting on a side table in Sarah Palmer’s living room. Then her voice (it was indeed Boyle’s voice) wafted out over the Road House as James Hurley sang his sweet, crazy, retro 50’s ballad “Just You And I” from Season 2. (Yes,...

Katy Tur felt the crowd turn. As Donald Trump scolded the NBC reporter from the stage, calling her “little Katy” because he didn’t like her coverage, the Trump supporters around her began to feel “like a large animal, angry and unchained.” The Secret Service felt the tension too: Agents took the unusual step of escorting her to her car. The December 2015 speech in Mount Pleasant, N.Y. was just a preview of things to come. Since Trump’s election, the attacks on reporters have gotten physical. On Thursday, Republican Greg Gianforte won a Montana congressional election despite being charged...

DaguerrotypeDear Fern,I've heard a lot of mixed things here about Terrence Malick's Voyage of Time, so I'm very pleased at your enraptured praise. Did you know from the first moment that you liked it so much? Sometimes, in those rare special occasions, you know right off that a film is great. From the first shot of Kelly Reichardt’s Certain Women, a grainy Montana landscape grayed by winter, with hills so soft in they could be painted on, and a train arcing its way towards the camera, it is clear this film is special. Based on stories by author Maile Meloy, the film takes the unusual form of a sequence of three stories, all set in small town Montana, and each foregrounded on a woman and her conflicted yearning.Laura Dern is a lawyer whose client (Jared Harris) in a dead-end malfeasance lawsuit gets increasingly dejected and unhinged...

Scarlett Johansson and Romain Dauriac made their first public appearance since news of their secret wedding broke when they attended the Gotham Independent Film Awards in NYC on Monday. Scarlett and Romain got married on Oct. 1 in a private ceremony in Montana. However, rumors of their nuptials didn't pop up until Scarlett was spotted wearing what looked like a wedding ring during a fundraising campaign in November. The secret wedding was confirmed on Monday, shortly before Romain and Scarlett attended the award show with a slew of other stars. Despite not confirming the news herself in the press, Scarlett didn't shy away from her newlywed status at the event, as she was reportedly overheard introducing Romain as her "husband" and showing off pictures on her phone to Julianne Moore. Scarlett was hardly the only big name at the large fete, which is one of the first award shows of the season.

Editor’s Note: I met Sean Williams at Comic-Con’s Hall H between panels on the first day of the Con this past July, chatting as people do. It turns out that Sean is a filmmaker, and he’s working on a sci-fi project – travel to another planet! strong women! – that sounds really great.
Last week Sean let me know that he was ready to start “officially” talking about the project, and wanted to know what I’d like to know. I told him I wanted to know, basically, everything. How the project got started, who’s involved, where he is in the process, etc. What follows is the narrative he wrote up on the spot on his phone and sent to me via Facebook Messenger in response. One long narrative that was completely engaging. He even copied and inserted biographies as he went along. It’s no wonder the man has won writing awards.

Accusations that Greg Mortenson lied about his past and abused charity funds are hitting his hometown hard-and also taking their toll on Mortenson. The Daily Beast visits remote Bozeman, Montana, and finds:
• The Secret Service paid a visit to Bozeman, Montana, recently to ask questions about Mortenson.
Related story on The Daily Beast: A Daring Escape from the Oil Rig
• The recent allegations are taking a toll on Mortenson. Police were recently called to his home, and a source at the local hospital says he checked in "to get out of the pressure."
• Cai initially hired Burson-Marsteller to handle the publicity surrounding the 60 Minutes report-and Karen Hughes, the former top aide to George W. Bush, was the point person.
• Mortenson underwent open-heart surgery on Friday, according to a spokeswoman.
Nothing was stolen, and the doors of the SUV were still locked. But the back windshield of my rental car had been smashed to bits.

'The Good Guys' (9Pm, Fox)
Until Tom Selleck returns to primetime next season on CBS' cop drama 'Blue Bloods,' we have to give it up to Bradley Whitford's 'Good Guys' moustache for the Best Supporting Performance by Facial Hair in a Drama Series. Really, look at that thing ... it's truly Selleck-worthy. Meanwhile, there's much to love elsewhere about this quirky new series (which actually falls more in the dramedy category), concocted by 'Burn Notice' creator Matt Nix. Whitford's Dan Stark was once a great cop ... in the '80s, a decade he can't seem to let go of, from the 'stache and his wardrobe to his drinking and his love of his Trans Am. But now he's partnered up with the by-the-book Jack Bailey (Colin Hanks), who embraces modern police techniques and desperately wants a promotion. Jack's more,...

Coming off the holiday weekend, Fox continues to lead the summer as the top-rated network, while CBS leads among total viewers and is the only network to post gains versus the same week last year.
Fox (4.2 million viewers, 1.5 average rating in the key adults 18-49 demographic) led the week in the demo, followed by CBS (6.9 million, 1.4), NBC (5.4 million, 1.4) and ABC (3.7 million, 1.1.).
NBC's "America's Got Talent" (13.1 million, 3.7) took the lead Tuesday as the top-rated show, hitting a season high, followed by Fox's "So You Think You Can Dance" (7.7 million, 3.0) on Wednesday.
CBS continued to keep pace with competitors while airing mainly repeats. Although "Got Talent" continues to perform, Wednesday's new drama, NBC's "The Philanthropist" (5.7 million, 1.4), fell from its premiere, and Thursday's "The Listener" (3.3 million, 0.9) on CBS continued to struggle.
ABC matched its all-time low adult-demo weekly number even as "The Bachelorette" (7.9 million, 2.7) hit a summer high; on Monday's episode, it slipped from that number.
