For the past several years, Sunny War has been finding her voice and refining her blend of acoustic street punk-poetry on a series of sparse West Coast albums, beginning with 2018’s With The Sun up through her most recent record, 2021’s Simple Syrup, which marked a major step forward for the Nashville-via-SoCal singer-songwriter. Those records, which introduced War as an eclectic gatherer of far-reaching musical influences, earned War accolades and opening slots for everyone from Valerie June to Keb’ Mo’.

The most surprising thing to Melissa Carper about her newfound success might be all the emails she has to send. A month before the release of her new solo album, Carper was still getting used to the non-musical work required of her, now that the 50-year-old indie singer-songwriter has waded into the big-time music industry. Her latest album, Ramblin’ Soul, is her first to receive a nationwide release (via Thirty Tigers). Rolling Stone named it one of the year’s best country albums and it’s shot up the Americana radio charts,...

Logan Ledger takes a stripped-down approach to his song “Starlight” in a newly released video, turning the rockabilly-tinged number into a yearning acoustic ode.
Previously released as a single in 2019, “Starlight” will also appear on the California native’s upcoming self-titled debut album, which was produced by T Bone Burnett. Opening with a swirling, psychedelic guitar intro, the song settles into a walking rhythm and sets the stage for Ledger’s emotive croon. “Starlight will be the only light/When I can hold you tight again,” he sings, handling the...

Through the lens of social distancing and quarantines, Jonathan Wilson’s new album, Dixie Blur, released March 6th, seems made for this moment. It’s a bittersweet, nostalgic record that recalls both a time and a place that’s impossible to revisit. For Wilson specifically, that’s his native Thomasville, North Carolina, but the message is universal: You can’t go home again.
“I went back to North Carolina not too long ago, to my hometown, and took some footage for a video,” says Wilson a few days before the LP’s release.

Happy 4th of July, my fellow Americans! Been a terrific six months for new music. Below are some of my favorite album releases that deserve early kudos at the half-way mark.
The War on Drugs: Lost in the Dream (Secretly Canadian)
Six months in and the Philly-based quartet The War on Drugs' third long player -- Lost in the Dream -- is their best and one of the best releases of 2014. Even with Kurt Vile leaving in 2011 for solo frontiers, Adam Granduciel soldiered on with his bandmates and crafted a superb album. Even with most of the songs clocking in over five minutes in length, and even with a rather pedestrian video (above), "Red Eyes" remains one of the catchiest indie rock tunes this side of New Order! The galloping guitar break is just sublime. Pick it up today!

Jeff Bridges has finally detailed his major label debut album, on the heels of his "Crazy Heart" fame. The self-titled set is due on Aug. 16 via Blue Note, and was recorded out of Brooklyn and Los Angeles. At the helm was "Crazy Heart" collaborator and celebrated producer T Bone Burnett, who helped wrangle a host of key musicians on the set, including guitarist Mark Ribot, bassist Dennis Crouch, pedal-steel guitarist Russ Pahl, keyboardist Keefus Ciancia and drummer Jay Bellerose. Rosanne Cash, Ryan Bingham, Sam Phillips and Benji Hughes also provide guest vocals on the 11-track album. Academy Award winner Bingham...

Actor Jeff Bridges, who won a Best Actor Oscar as a grizzled former country music legend in " Crazy Heart," has signed a recording deal with Emi's Blue Note Records, which will release his major-label debut album in late summer.
Inspired by their collaboration on "Crazy Heart," Bridges will record the album with his long-time friend, songwriter/producer T-Bone Burnett and will include several of Bridges' own compositions, along with material by a collection of other musicians.

Chicago – We dig discovering sprouting artists at the phase where they’re just talented enough to keep their humility. That’s where we found 21-year-old singer, songwriter and guitarist Sahara Smith on Friday night at Chicago’s Lincoln Hall. Her voice has been described as “a potent mix of whiskey and molasses” and the “best of what’s next”.
Music Rating: 3.0/5.0
A Texas-based performer since the age of 13, Smith’s new career has been shepherded by T Bone Burnett and produced by Emile Kelman (Burnett’s longtime studio veteran). Burnett earned recent acclaim for writing the lyrics to “The Weary Kind,” which was the theme to the new film “Crazy Heart” where Jeff Bridges won a 2010 Oscar for his leading role.

Smith’s current tour, which is aimed at helping to sell her album due out in Aug. 2010, is piggybacked with Mason Jennings and Nathaniel Rateliff.
