Hunter Schafer consistently captivates me with her striking appearances on the red carpet. She exudes fearlessness in her fashion choices.
Her latest outing at the Berlinale International Film Festival for her horror film Cuckoo left jaws dropping, mine included. Recently, on Thursday, April 11, she once again captivated everyone with her standout look at the Second Annual GQ Global Creativity Awards.

Lorely Rodriguez appears onscreen for our Zoom call from Los Angeles. She beams in from her home, which she claims is a mess. I had hair and makeup and ring lights,” she explains. Rodriguez is bemused that showing up camera-ready on red carpets is part of her job now, but if performing the...

During her time in Hollywood, Tessa Thompson has made headlines for several romantic connections. The Marvels star tends to keep things as private as possible. However, the 40-year-old was spotted at a Lakers game on March 6, getting cozy courtside with an unexpected guest.

Emma Roberts and Cody John couple up while stepping out for the Lacoste Womenswear Fall/Winter 2024-2025 fashion show held on Tuesday (March 5) in Paris.
The 33-year-old American Horror Story actress and her actor beau joined several other celebs at the Paris Fashion Week runway presentation, which was the brand’s creative director Pelagia Kolotouros‘ Paris debut.
Also in attendance at the fashion show were Adrien Brody, Gia Coppola and beau Honor Titus, Hari Nef, Grace Jones, Jack Dylan Grazer, Mel C, Fai Khadra, Wisdom Kaye, Dev Hynes, Clara Berry and Emma Brooks.
The new collection “re-energizes the brand in the spirit of the young René Lacoste — aka ‘the crocodile’ — who was the world’s number one ranked tennis player when Paris was the world capital of creativity across the arts. Lines twist, angles disappear and curves surprise as she carves out a new path informed by the elegant modernism of the 1920s and 1930s.

Searching for and listening to movie soundtrack music for the year is an active quest of curiosity, discovery, and collage. For those fatigued and pushing through the chilliest season, I hope this mix can provide both energy and warmth, as it did to me in making it.Trends in film music over the last decade are continuing strong in 2023, particularly in the ambition of independent auteurs using complex and unusual scoring. The foundation for this mix is Angela Schanelec's beautiful and aptly titled Music, which provides both diegetic and non-diegetic moments to guide us. Samples range from The Old Oak, in which classical choral choir meets Syrian guitar and words of hope that now hit harder than ever, to a mix of sentimental strings courtesy of the legendary Joe Hisaishi. Abstract experimental sounds by two completely different kinds of artists—Harmony Korine and Thomas Newman—are mixed with sliced...

2023 had its fair share of memorable scores and music. Any year with new work from Joe Hisaishi and Mica Levi is going to be one for the books, but the last 12 months also gave us Robbie Robertson’s swan song and a Dev Hynes/Paul Schrader collaboration. In terms of performance, Bradley Cooper conducting the London Philharmonic was irresistible, but no more so than Talia Ryder’s opening number in The Sweet East or the hero of Fallen Leaves experiencing his moment of clarity while listening to a Swedish synth group. Maybe the best musical performance I saw in a movie this year comes at the beginning of Nicolas Philibert’s On the Adamant, a documentary about a psychiatric care center that sits on the river Seine and provides a port for inner storms. The singer’s name is François, an angular, middle-aged man who growls a raw rendition of...

As Martin Scorsese once said, “Music and cinema fit together naturally. Because there’s a kind of intrinsic musicality to the way moving images work when they’re put together. It’s been said that cinema and music are very close as art forms, and I think that’s true.” Indeed, the right piece of music––whether it’s an original score or a carefully selected song––can do wonders for a sequence, and today we’re looking at the 20 films that best expressed that notion in 2023.
From seasoned composers to accomplished musicians, as well as a smattering of soundtracks, each perfectly transported us. Check out our rundown of the top 20, which includes streams to each soundtrack in full where available.

Each week we highlight the noteworthy titles that have recently hit streaming platforms in the United States. Check out this week’s selections below and past round-ups here.
Birth/Rebirth (Laura Moss)
Likely a film that some will find underwhelming due to its lowkey, mostly affectless style, it’s a rather impressive feat of narrative economy that manages to separate itself from the seemingly endless indie horror crop. Directed by Laura Moss, there’s the sense they either don’t have much of a feel for the genre or rather harbors a general disdain for the shorthands it’s fallen into (hopefully they don’t get absorbed into bad studio product soon), the film’s tendencies refreshingly feel free of the trappings of calling-card cinema. – Ethan V. Plot: The film follows Narvel Roth, the meticulous horticulturist of Gracewood Gardens. He is as much devoted to tending the grounds of this beautiful and historic estate, to pandering to his employer, the wealthy dowager Mrs. Haverhill. When Mrs. Haverhill demands that he take on her wayward and troubled great-niece Maya) as a new apprentice, chaos enters Narvel’s spartan existence, unlocking dark secrets from a buried violent past that threaten them all.
Review: Paul Schrader’s career has always been one of extreme highs and lows. While his writing and directing efforts are typically tagged with his credits on Raging Bull and Taxi Driver, Schrader’s output in the 2000s has been wildly inconsistent. But, since his 2017 masterpiece First Reformed, the filmmaker has delivered a solid follow-up in 2021’s The Card Counter and looks to complete a loose thematic trilogy with Master Gardener. After a slight lapse with 2021’s subpar The Card Counter, writer/director Paul Schrader returns to solid, provocative form in this captivating character study of an emotionally detached horticulturalist with a dark past who is forced to reconnect with traits he once embraced, and now hates, to save someone he loves. On paper, Master Gardener’s plot can easily be streamlined into a sentence long synopsis but Schrader’s film, like it’s protagonist, is enriched with depth and complexity.
An electrifying Joel Edgerton plays Narvel Roth, the master gardener of the title who works for wealthy dowager/land owner Norma Haverhill (Sigourney Weaver). Before his passing in late March, the late Japanese composer and electronic music pioneer Ryuichi Sakamoto had been putting together a playlist of music to be played at his own funeral. Now, Sakamoto’s management has shared that “last playlist,” simply titled “funeral.”
“We would like to share the playlist that Ryuichi had been privately compiling to be played at his own funeral to accompany his own passing,” Sakamoto’s team wrote in an accompanying message. “He truly was with music until the very end.”
Opening with an 11-minute track by Sakamoto’s frequent collaborator Alva Noto, the 33-song playlist features classical music from Johann Sebastian Bach, Claude Debussy, and Maurice Ravel. It also includes the work of renowned film composers Ennio Morricone and Nino Rota, jazz music from Bill Evans Trio, and David Sylvian’s “Orpheus” — the latter of which features Sakamoto himself on piano and synths. Gangsta Boo, a rapper and former member of hip-hop group ‘Three 6 Mafia’, passed away. She was 43.
Her death was reported by Fox 13 Memphis and Wreg Memphis.
According to Fox 13, Boo – whose birth name was Lola Mitchell – was found dead around 4 p.m. on Sunday afternoon. Wreg reported that Boo’s death was confirmed by a representative. The cause of her death has not been disclosed, reports Variety.
A product of the Dirty South school of hip-hop in the 1990s, Boo’s edgy raps and frank sexuality made her an energetic Memphis counterpart to Philadelphia rapper Eve, Brooklyn’s Lil Kim and Miami’s Trina.
Like those female rappers, Boo’s start came with a prominent regional crew – ‘Three 6 Mafia’, founded by DJ Paul, Juicy J and Lord Infamous – with whom she recorded a handful of studio albums until her departure in 2002.

There is a paradox at the heart of Master Gardener. In their respective worlds—one of abstinence and iconography; the other of money and risk—priests and gamblers are kind of sexy. In their own ways, so are gigolos, drug dealers, porn stars, sex addicts, even taxi drivers. Gardeners? For all their charms, maybe less so. The latest from Paul Schrader rounds out an idiosyncratic trilogy: without breaking the mould, and for three films in a row, the director has placed his man-in-a-room archetype into the fraught, divided milieu of contemporary America. With First Reformed and Card Counter, Schrader could bank on audiences already being attuned to the quasi-culty vibes of his characters’ extreme callings. Master Gardener, the story of a diligent horticulturist, has a bit more heavy lifting to do; but there’s fun to be had in the labor.

On paper, Paul Schrader’s latest, Master Gardener, has all the elements to be a continuation of the writer-director’s recent renaissance with First Reformed and The Card Counter. Another solitary man tormented by a violent past seeks regeneration, penning detailed journals about the obsession — in this case, horticulture — that keeps his darkest thoughts at bay. Joel Edgerton’s haunted central performance as former white supremacist Narvel Roth fits the essential Schrader mold of a troubled soul hiding from his demons. But little else rings true in a drama curiously lacking in texture, which misses the mark in lifeless scene after scene.
The film premieres out of competition in Venice in conjunction with Schrader receiving the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement, an honor fully earned with a distinguished body of work going back almost 50 years. However, this is one of his weaker efforts,...

English singer-songwriter Harry Styles, who has been ruling the Instagram reels of late with his ‘As It Was’ track, recently performed first of his 15 shows at the Madison Square Garden in New York City, etching the moment forever in the hearts of a crowd of roughly 20,000 fans.
The former One Direction member made a single request of his fans during his time on stage: “I ask only one very, very simple thing — I need you to have as much fun as you can possibly have,” he said, quoted by Billboard.
Then with a grin smiling as he looked at the throngs of screaming admirers packed into Madison Square Garden, he pumped the excitement further “I challenge you to have as much fun as I’m gonna have.”
According to Billboard, the fans at the venue didn’t need this reminder — even before Styles took to the stage, the attendees were operating on a good-vibes-only basis.

After witnessing Godzilla going up against King Kong and getting terrorized in The Night House, Rebecca Hall is entering the fall movie season on a more fulfilling note. Her directorial debut Passing, which premiered at Sundance Film Festival and will soon stop by New York Film Festival, is getting a Netflix release in November and now the first trailer has arrived. Adapted from Nella Larsen’s 1929 novel, Passing tells the story of two Black women, Irene Redfield (Tessa Thompson) and Clare Kendry (Ruth Negga), who can “pass” as white but choose to live on opposite sides of the color line during the height of the Harlem Renaissance in late 1920s New York.
Shayna Warner said in her Sundance review, “Rebecca Hall’s Passing has been fifteen years in the making, and that dedication shows in every meticulously crafted frame. Adapted from Nella Larsen’s 1929 novel, the tense, black and white...

Professional athletes, having trained with laser-like focus on a single pursuit for most of their lives, are not always the most interesting people. Tennis provides a few exceptions. John McEnroe, Serena Williams, and Andre Agassi all sport personalities as explosive off court as they are (or were) on it. Roger Federer is known for being a gentleman. Gael Monfils, a Frenchman, has a certain je ne sais quoi. Most everyone else makes the commentators sing for their supper.
Naomi Osaka can be soft-spoken, though not when it comes to her support for the Black Lives Matter movement. The 23-year-old has four Grand Slam titles to her name and is currently ranked No. 2 in the world in women’s singles. Being a little camera-shy has no bearing on her tennis, but it doesn’t make for great movie-making.

Rebecca Hall’s Passing has been fifteen years in the making, and that dedication shows in every meticulously crafted frame. Adapted from Nella Larsen’s 1929 novel, the tense, black and white psychological drama is a study in intentional filmmaking. Every detail is an obsession with symbolism and performativity, from the by-turns absent and invasive score courtesy of Devonté Hynes to the elaborate period wardrobe from Marci Rodgers, to the affect with which stars Tessa Thompson and Ruth Negga speak. This obsessiveness folds in on itself, creating a layered profile of reunited childhood friends Irene Redfield (Thompson) and Clare Bellew (Negga) whose muffled desire for one another exposes devastating cracks in each of their lives. By turns stifling and lucid with seduction, Hall’s debut is impressive, even when its atmosphere sometimes overtakes its pace.

A conversation between the rock group Sparks and the filmmaker who has made a movie about them, Edgar Wright, is be one of the standout draws of this year’s Sundance ASCAP Music Cafe, which, along with the host festival itself, has moved off Park City’s Main Street and online for 2021.
Wright’s documentary “The Sparks Brothers,” about the five-decade musical career of Ron and Russell Mael, is one of the more eagerly anticipated titles of this year’s Sundance Film Festival. Other conversations scheduled for ASCAP’s programming include a chat between “Passing” director Rebecca Hall and composer Devonté Hynes (aka Blood Orange), and another uniting composers Siddhartha Khosla (“This Is Us”) and Amanda Jones.
Musical performances will no longer serve as a draw to festival attendees who want a break from the cold, but may be just as worthy an excuse for a lull from working at home.

Where do you even begin with a year brimming with as much exciting music as 2020 had to offer? Even if you limit it to what made it to TV screens, it’s still a daunting collection of possibilities.
To start, there were the undeniable musical charms of “Central Park,” “The Eddy,” and “P-Valley,” all of which drew heavily on original songs to help tether their stories to a distinct time and place.
Phillip Glass, Harold Budd (“I Know This Much is True”), Alan Silvestri (“Cosmos: Possible Worlds”) and Atticus Ross all added to their robust, ever-growing bodies of work.
Musicians who have helped define the atmospheres of their respective series — like Ramin Djawadi for “Westworld” or Jesse Novak for “BoJack Horseman” — continued to do so as the characters in focus faced monumental changes. In the middle of it all, Jeff Russo held onto his title of the busiest musician in...

Devonté Hynes fills the world of Luca Gaudagnino’s We Are Who We Are with airy piano scores and haunting synth numbers that give color and character to the Chioggia military base and its eclectic group of residents. However, when the Blood Orange front man isn’t tying the lush scenes of Italy’s coast together with original music, he’s part of the story – as an integral figure in the season finale and as an idol for Jack Dylan Grazer’s teenage protagonist, Fraser.
We Are Who We Are may be Hynes’ first venture into the world of television scoring, but the creator’s far from new to the Hollywood scene. In 2013 he composed original music for Gia Coppola’s Palo Alto and Melina Matsoukas’ Queen & Slim in 2019. Hynes recently took home an ASCAP London Music Award for his Ost for the drama starring Jodie Turner-Smith and Daniel Kaluuya.

“Queen & Slim,” the film, traffics in sudden tragedy and symbolic terror as it portrays the violence of self-defense and self-awareness in stark, painful terms. It deserves an equally audacious score and soundtrack, a job that has gone to another Devonté Hynes, the British singer, songwriter, guitarist, record producer and director in his guise of Blood Orange.
Hynes has been known for his other musical projects, the punky Test Icicles and the dreamy Lightspeed Champion. But as Blood Orange, Hynes has found himself at the axis of abstract soul and ambient electronic pop with a lyrical edge that is as deeply emotional as it is bracingly inventive. Plus, in the last several years, Orange has been in the pink of top-tier production and writing assignments for the likes of Mariah Carey, Solange, Mac Miller, Fka Twigs, Haim, Florence and the Machine, Carly Rae Jepsen, Kylie Minogue and Blondie. Southern California transportation officials are working on a plan to use Amtrak trains to help to ease traffic gridlock to and from the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival.
The Riverside County Transportation Commission says it has received $8.6 million in funding for temporary train service that would run from Los Angeles to the city of Indio, according to the Riverside Press-Enterprise.
The funding would include $5.9 million from the state, with another $2.7 coming from the county. The trains would pick passengers up at Union Station in downtown L.A. and travel about two hours to the Coachella Valley. Attendees would then board shuttle buses to the concert grounds.
The goal is to have the service ready for the 2020 Coachella and Stagecoach Country Music festivals.
This year’s Coachella fest is set to take place from April 12-14, and then return April 19-21, with Childish Gambino, Tame Impala, and Ariana Grande announced as headliners.

The month of October is an exciting time of year for kids—and also those of us who still consider ourselves “kids at heart”—and with that in mind, I wanted to put together a collection of fun and festive cocktails that you can serve up at your Halloween gatherings, or just mix up anytime you want to get into the “spirit” of the season over the next few weeks.
