Alan Cumming isn’t much of a reality TV fan — so as host of Peacock’s “The Traitors,” he enjoys being a bit blind to the baggage that many of the contestants carry to the Scottish Highlands.
“When I go to do ‘The Traitors, I have a crash course in reality TV stars, and random people,” he tells Variety‘s Awards Circuit Podcast. “I don’t know who many of the people are. Because I juust don’t watch those shows. And actually I quite like it, just to meet the people on those their own terms — rather than that with all the history they bring.”
Cumming much prefers watching them plot and scheme inside the game of “The Traitors,” vs whatever it is they do on the “Real Housewives” and its ilk. “I think that the culture of these shows is very much about creating drama,” he says. “The structures are the same,...

The Traitors- Pictured: Alan Cumming — (Photo by: Peacock) The Traitors has emerged as one of the hottest reality shows on television, especially in the streaming realm. As the name implies, the elaborate game show includes a group of duplicitous competitors who try to eliminate the “faithful” players and claim the prize money for themselves. Fittingly, the host of the show is Alan Cumming, who played the duplicitous political operative Eli Gold on The Good Wife and The Good Fight. As the show’s host, he needs to be able to keep the identities of the traitors secret — something he admits is not an easy thing for him to do. (Click on the media bar below to hear Alan Cumming) https://www.hollywoodoutbreak.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/Alan_Ciumming_Secterts_Trauots_.mp3 The Traitors is currently streaming on Peacock.

[This story contains spoilers from a nearly 10-year-old episode of The Good Wife ]
On Mar. 23, 2014, The Good Wife pulled something of a TV coup. The CBS legal drama aired an episode that killed off a major character, the No. 2 actor on the call sheet, without even a whiff of the departure leaking online beforehand.
Showrunners Michelle and Robert King have since spoken many times about all the lengths to which everyone involved went to keep Josh Charles’ abrupt exit under wraps, as has Charles and many of his former castmates, but it turns out someone was eagerly blabbing about it the whole time. At least, that’s what Alan Cumming admitted during a Wednesday press event for Peacock series The Traitors.
“I am the most indiscreet person,” said Cumming. “When I was on The Good Wife and Will [Charles’ character] was murdered — remember when Will was shot? — I told everyone. I can’t understand how it didn’t get out.”

Whether it’s because of Covid shutdowns, reboots, spin-offs or a gap between seasons, more and more actors in Emmy-eligible shows are coming to their roles after much delay. While this could create financial or scheduling concerns, it also gives the talent more time to ruminate on the part, new or old.
More often, actors returned to characters they previously inhabited. Alan Cumming, nominated three times for playing the slippery Eli Gold on the CBS drama “The Good Wife,” reprised the role as a guest star for the final season of its spin-off, Paramount+’s “The Good Fight.”
Adam DeVine, who played frequent foil Bumper Allen in the “Pitch Perfect” movies, became the lead of the Peacock spinoff, “Pitch Perfect: Bumper in Berlin.” And Adam Scott, Emmy-nominated for his performance in “Severance” last year, joined other cast members from the Starz comedy “Party Down” for the cater-waiter comedy’s third season,...

The Gold Derby predictions center event for the 2023 Emmy Awards has now added the Drama Guest Actor category. We have compiled lists of nearly 40 eligible performers in each of the four guest acting races that reflect our educated guesses on who will be submitted for consideration. More names will be added in the next few months and when the Television Academy releases this year’s ballots in June. Make your very first selections now!
Last year, “Succession” dominated this category with four of the six slots for guests Adrien Brody, James Cromwell, Arian Moayed, and Alexander Skarsgård. As of this writing, we anticipate both Cromwell and Moayed will be guest eligible — Moayed has already appeared in one Season 4 episode so far — while Skarsgård may appear in enough episodes to be deemed supporting. With the 2022 victor Colman Domingo (“Euphoria”) and nominee Tom Pelphrey (“Ozark”) ineligible, there will be at least three...

Alan Cumming is busy. He’s been touring his one-man show “Alan Cumming Is Not Acting His Age,” he’s the host of Peacock’s U.S. version of the hit Netherlands reality competition show “The Traitors” – think an elaborate game of Mafia in a Scottish castle with pseudo-celebs and real people — and he’ll be stateside in Los Angeles on Jan. 28 to return as host of AARP’s Movies for Grownups Awards.
I caught up with the Tony winner for a chat on this week’s “Just for Variety” podcast.

Welcome to this week’s “Just for Variety.”
If anyone was holding out hope that Alejandro González Iñárritu would change his mind about directing a superhero movie, I don’t have good news for ya.
The Oscar-winning filmmaker doubled down on his dislike of the tentpole genre when I caught up with him at the recent BAFTA Tea Party in Beverly Hills. Calling superheroes “sad figures,” Iñárritu said, “I see heroes every day. I see beautiful people really going through very difficult situations and doing incredible things. And that is the people that I kind of connect with. But these kinds of superpower heroes, really do we need that?”
He continued, “If you need that, is there something missing … instead of admiring what we have, the possibilities that we have?”

On Thursday, “The Good Fight,” one of the most prescient, incisive and criminally overlooked shows on television, airs its series finale. The final season of the Paramount+ legal drama and political satire has once again tapped into the existential angst of the nation, with the daily struggles of show’s law firm playing out against the backdrop of increasingly precarious political protests and a looming race war in Chicago. With societal tensions on the show at a fever pitch, the last hour promises to be a powder keg that co-creators Michelle King and Robert King are no doubt gleefully ready to strike.
Details about the episode are being kept under wraps. The logline for the finale, titled “The End of Everything,” reads simply, “The office must survive after being trapped by white supremacists.” With plenty of room for speculation, then, we couldn’t help but offer our hopes for the final hour,...

(Spoiler alert: This post discusses the entirety of “9-1-1” Season 6, Episode 3, titled “The Devil You Know.”)
Unfortunately, Athena and Bobby are not going on that cruise any time soon. In a spotlight on the “9-1-1” power couple, played by Angela Bassett and Peter Krause, Season 6’s Episode 3 delves deep into the mystery that started it all.
“The Devil You Know” uncovers what really happened to Tanya Kingston, Athena’s hometown neighbor who was kidnapped decades prior and whose unsolved disappearance led the LAPD officer on the path of becoming a cop.
“It was very surprising to open the script and see that we were going to revisit that storyline, and there was just something very satisfying in that because it was an unsolved murder and a driving force as to why Athena became a cop and how she is and who she is a person,” Bassett told TheWrap in an interview.

Democratic campaign manager Eli Gold (Alan Cumming) made his debut on “The Good Fight” on Paramount+ over the last two episodes of Season 6, visiting Chicago to deal with tricky legal troubles brought about by a right-wing prosecutor attempting to call him out for interference in the 2020 election. While he was in town, he attended a fundraiser for the Dems, and was nearly killed when a man burst out of a bathroom stall at the event, shouting an anti-Jewish epithet and shooting Frank Landau, who the man had mistaken for Gold. But that wasn’t the original version of the story from showrunners Robert and Michelle King, according to Cumming.
“The original plan was even darker. … Eli was going to die,” Cumming said, noting he signed on to do two episodes with Eli dying in the second.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for The Good Fight Season 6 Episode 2 “The End of the Yips.”] The Good Fight got very Good Wife-y in the latest episode, with Eli Gold (Alan Cumming) stopping by to help his daughter Marissa (Sarah Steele), and offering an update on two major players of the original series. When Eli called into Diane Lockhart’s (Christine Baranski) office, she explained her being downstairs with “just a general reshuffling” before pivoting the conversation to Chris Noth and Julianna Margulies’ Good Wife characters: “And I hear Peter Florrick’s back in jail? Another reshuffling?” Eli confirmed — though didn’t specify why — and added, “I don’t think he’s going to come back from this one.” As for Alicia, “she’s still in law,” he shared. “Started her own firm in New York, doing well. You’re not in touch with her?” Diane confirmed she’s not, explaining, “that didn’t end well.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for The Good Fight Season 6 premiere “The Beginning of the End.”] The Good Fight kicks off its final season with an episode that introduces two new additions in Ri’Chard Lane (Andre Braugher) as Liz Reddick’s (Audra McDonald) new partner and Dr. Lyle Bettencourt (John Slattery) whose methods Diane Lockhart (Christine Baranski) turns to in order to get “off the wheel.” It also sets up the return of a Good Wife fave Eli Gold (Alan Cumming). His daughter Marissa (Sarah Steele), now an attorney, is excited to get right to it, and that means pushing to argue a motion in court. Though she swears Diane won’t regret saying yes, things don’t go as she’d hoped. Marissa tries to get advice from Carmen (Charmaine Bingwa), but the other lawyer is too distracted with her own case. In its sixth and final season, The Good Fight still does what it does best: take on the ever-shifting battle over social issues with outrage and humor. The brilliant topical legal satire’s final episodes look out at the world through the eyes of exhausted Chicago lawyer Diane Lockhart (Christine Baranski) — with a fear that civil war is in the offing. “Where do you find your optimism?” the always blunt Eli Gold asks at one point. The sardonic answer is pure Lockhart: “In a hallucinogenic drug called Pt-108.” Meanwhile, legacy partner Liz Reddick (Audra McDonald) deals with the firm’s flamboyantly pushy new name partner Ri’Chard (Andre Braugher). John Slattery also joins the cast. With conflict in the firm and fighting in the streets, is all lost? Not with Diane around. As she tells Liz at one point, “I’m feeling it…that most dangerous feeling: hope.” The Good Fight,...

The upcoming season of “The Good Fight” will be its last. Showrunners Robert and Michelle King will bring a 13-year journey with Christine Baranski’s Diane Lockhart to a close when Season 6 premieres Sept. 8 on Paramount+.
For the Kings, the decision to call it a wrap with a final 10-episode season is a matter of not wanting to “overstay your welcome,” as Robert King told Variety. The husband-and-wife showrunner duo want to take “Good Fight” out on a high note. The series debuted in February 2017 as a spinoff of the Emmy-winning CBS legal drama “The Good Wife,” which ran from 2009-2016.
“We felt we could end the show with a pretty big bang,” Robert King said. “That’s better than getting to the season where we’re struggling to find plot. We thought the sixth season could get us off the stage pretty grandly.”

This wraps a 13-season run for Robert and Michelle King, creators and executive producers of The Good Wife, which aired on CBS for seven seasons, and co-creators/executive producers of spinoff The Good Fight.
As usual, The Good Fight will be topical and reflect current events in Season 6, which has Diane (Christine Baranski) feeling like she’s going crazy, struggling with an uneasy sense of déjà vu, with everything from Roe v. Wade, to voting rights, to Cold War aggressions returning. Meanwhile, the lawyers of Reddick & Associates wonder if the violence that they see all around them points to an impending civil war.

The little engine that could has got nothin’ on Sarah Steele. Considering how seminal a season The Good Fight‘s just-concluded fifth was for both her and Marissa Gold, the no-bs B character she slowly but surely elevated to the A team, her motto oughta be not “I think I can” but “Of course I will.”
The actress’ long, unorthodox journey playing the filterless daughter of Alan Cumming’s Eli Gold began in 2011 via a guest stint in Season 2 of The Good Wife. She recurred for the series’ remaining five seasons before taking her fan-favorite character to offshoot The Good Fight...
