Long before he won the 2024 Best Supporting Actor Oscar for “Oppenheimer,” Robert Downey Jr. made his screen debut at age five in the experimental 1970 film “Pound,” which was directed by his father and co-starred his mother and sister. Upon clinching said prize, he emulated only three other men who were first honored by the academy at least half a century into their acting careers. Considering both male categories (and only counting credited roles in feature films), his waiting period of 54 years far exceeds the all-time average, which now stands at 19.5 years.
Although nearly two full decades separate their time-of-win ages (58 and 77), Downey came within five years of breaking John Gielgud’s general record for longest acting career preceding an Oscar victory. The English performer has held that distinction since 1982, when he was lauded for his supporting turn in “Arthur” 58 years after debuting in “Who Is the Man?” (1924). While no male...

Early into Pham Thien An’s sprawling, stupefying Inside the Yellow Cocoon Shell, there’s a shot that manifests Caravaggio inside a shack in rural Vietnam. Having traveled from Saigon to his home village to attend the funeral of his sister-in-law, Thien (Le Phong Vu) is visiting a local elder who sowed a shroud for the departed. The twenty-something wants to pay for the service; the old man doesn’t take money from neighbors. He does accept the company, though, and very generously spills a whole cascade of memories from the Vietnam War, laying bare an old bullet scar on his ribcage. And as Thien bends to graze the bruised skin under the warm, caliginous light, Pham frames the moment as one of reverential awe, an image modeled off of Caravaggio’s “The Incredulity of Saint Thomas.” It’s a beautiful shot in a film full of them. That it...

Realizing they needed a voice over actor to provide the narration for a new show in development called Arrested Development, producer Ron Howard looked around the empty recording studio, finding no voice over actor in sight. So this Oscar winning former child star stepped in to provide a temporary voice track, you know just as a filler until they could find a better voice, of course. But a better voice never came because Ron Howard’s comforting and gentle tone mixed with a dry yet kinda goofy speech pattern was the perfect fit for the sense of humor of this show. But this was not the only time Ron Howard stepped up and became an unexpected perfect fit, he’s been doing that all his life – from being in front of the camera in classic TV shows and behind the camera for a hefty handful of wonderful motion pictures… and more!

As someone with an insect phobia, exploring the world—or more accurately, worlds—of Cocoon began as one of the most subtly unsettling experiences I’ve seen out of games in some time. It’s a place equal parts reminiscent of the Shimmer from Alex Garland’s adaptation of Annihilation and the organic lifeforms that sprout in any number of Björk music videos. Throughout, you’re harnessing the building blocks that make up the natural world, though here they’ve been warped into something vaguely familiar yet demonstrably alien. This is the world within worlds that Cocoon’s player character, a cicada-like creature, is birthed into.
Over the course of Cocoon’s short play time, you wander those worlds solving puzzles, pushing forward as you unravel the mysteries that are laced into the landscapes. In the process you find out just how quickly one can adapt to any environment. That...

Just a few weeks ago it looked like this weekend may be the one that finally took Barbie off her perch atop the charts as the highly anticipated Gran Turismo was set to launch. However, Sony recently announced a massive update to their release schedule which saw Gran Turismo get pushed back by two weeks due to the ongoing SAG strikes which doesn’t allow stars to promote their already completed films. As a member of SAG-Aftra, I appreciate the fight we are currently in, but I completely disagree with not allowing the stars to promote their films on their own social media pages. This is work that was completed prior to any strike and represents months, and for some, years of their lives to make something they are proud of and they are prohibited from simply saying “hey, go see my movie this weekend, it’s really good!”
But I digress!

The Duffer Brothers are staying strong at Netflix with a new supernatural series. But instead of teenagers leading the narrative, a group of senior citizens will make up The Boroughs. Created by Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews (The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance), the mystery series is set in a seemingly idyllic retirement community, where an unlikely group of residents team up to thwart an otherworldly force threatening their livelihood. The premise sounds like a more sinister Cocoon, and we all know how much the Duffers and even Addiss and Matthews love '80s references. As we wait for more updates on the show’s production, here’s everything we know about The Boroughs so far.
According to the official logline: “In a seemingly picturesque retirement community in the New Mexico desert, a group of unlikely heroes must band together to stop an otherworldly threat from stealing the one thing they don’t have…...

It wasn't until the release of James Cameron's 1986 film "Aliens" that it was established where xenomorph eggs come from. In Ridley Scott's 1979 original "Alien," an extraterrestrial storehouse full of leathery eggs was seemingly left behind unattended. Where the eggs came from, and what they were doing in the storehouse, would remain a mystery. Inside one of the eggs was centipede-like bone critter that rammed its ovipositor down the throat of Kane (John Hurt) and forced him into a coma, clinging onto his face. This "facehugger" was in fact implanting a creature fetus into Kane's chest. Soon, the facehugger drops off of Kane's face, dead, and Kane regains consciousness. The alien young then unexpectedly explodes forcefully out of Kane's stomach.
The life cycle of a xenomorph is now familiar to horror fans the world over, but at one point it wasn't so clear, and the discovery was horrifying. Cameron,...

Robert Zemeckis was one of the most prominent directors of the eighties and nineties. His string of hits is almost unmatched. Think about it – Romancing the Stone, the Back to the Future Trilogy, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Forrest Gump, Cast Away, What Lies Beneath, etc. This is why it’s so bizarre that a live-action Disney Pinocchio movie directed by Zemeckis and starring his best favorite leading man, Tom Hanks, was essentially dumped to streaming. It came and went without much fanfare, while it would have been a cinematic event fifteen years ago. Wtf Happened?
In this episode of Wtf Happened to this Celebrity, we dig into Zemeckis’ career, which began with the underrated pair I Wanna Hold Your Hand and Used Cars before Romancing the Stone made him an A-lister. We dig into how he was actually fired from Cocoon because the Fox brass thought Romancing the Stone would flop,...
