Whether they invite them or not, there are few stories where imagining what comes next is impossible. Part of the appeal of popular, lasting films and series is that they occupy a slice of a world, with the promise that something interesting might be happening elsewhere. Amidst the avalanche of brand extensions and franchise retreads and character revivals, “The Full Monty” feels like the kind of plucky independent film hit that could provide a foundation for a “where are they now” story that doesn’t feel like a cynical cash grab or marketing play. A quarter century after the original movie found success in a number of different arenas, a new FX series aims to revisit a ragtag group in the north England city of Sheffield to see what happens a generation after a sensation.

The Writers Guild of America strike is putting the spotlight on key issues that are important to ensuring a future for writers, Succession creator Jesse Armstrong and colleagues told The Hollywood Reporter on Wednesday in central London where they participated in a show of support for the WGA strike on a “Global Day of Solidarity” that used the moniker and hashtag Screenwriters Everywhere.
Armstrong discussed such core hot-button issues in the labor dispute as pay, writers rooms and AI.
“Writers rooms need lots of different perspectives,” he told THR. And if you can’t make a living as a writer, we won’t get young people joining the industry.”
AI affects every area of life these days. “Anyone who works right now is thinking how they could be replaced by AI,” Armstrong explains. “For writers, there’s a particular concern that work that previous writers have done, or [we have done] ourselves, could...

The entire cast of 1997’s feel-good hit “The Full Monty” is back for Hulu’s new series of the same name — even Wim Snape, who played young Nathan at age 11, returns to play the much more sensible son of Robert Carlyle’s charming but unreliable Gaz. But some things are different this time around as the crew reunites for the Hulu sequel series (which drops June 14), with Oscar-nominated scripter Simon Beaufoy co-writing with Alice Nutter.
The series finds the crew still trying various get-rich schemes with mixed to dismal results. The movie, which saw the unemployed steelworkers of Sheffield secretly becoming strippers to raise some cash — and their low self-esteem —ended on a high as the lads gave the enthusiastic hometown audience “the full monty,” that is, full frontal nudity.

Russell T. Davies addressed the U.S. writers strike for the first time at the London Screenwriters Everywhere protest this afternoon.
Speaking with Deadline on the ground, the Doctor Who showrunner said he believes the issues around the strike haven’t been created by producers or executive producers but by the ignorance of executives at the higher boardroom level “who I’m not even sure are listening.”
“That’s the problem. We need to get rid of them,” Davies said.
When asked what he thinks needs to change to end the strike, Davies said terms between writers and the studios “just need to be humane.”
Davies added that he turned up today to show solidarity with the WGA and predicted that the issues writers face in the U.S. will eventually plague the UK industry.
“I know that what happens in America happens here. These problems will be coming this way.

1997 film The Full Monty is remembered for two things: being an unexpectedly massive hit, and its final shot of six naked bums frozen mid-sway to Tom Jones’ “You Can Leave Your Hat On”. Over time, its story about a group of unemployed Sheffield men making themselves a bit of cash and even more notoriety by stripping on stage for one night only has been boiled down to box-office and bare bottoms. So much so that when this 26-years-later sequel was first announced, there was a lot of the same reaction: wouldn’t that lot be in their sixties by now? Who’d want to see them in a thong?
You don’t see anybody in a thong in The Full Monty TV series, which doesn’t even call back to that infamous sold-out night at the Millthorpe Working Men’s Club until episode six of eight. For want of a less troubling mental image,...

In the 1997 sleeper hit comedy The Full Monty, six unemployed men in a dying English steel town attempt to make some cash by putting on a show where they will dance and strip for the local women. In the new FX sequel series, Gaz (Robert Carlyle), Dave (Mark Addy), and the rest of the group are in many ways more desperate. But they’re also too old and slow to reprise their greatest hit. When a stranger pressures them to do the dance again for the first time in 26 years,...

Remember "The Full Monty," friends? The British comedy from director Peter Cattaneo and "Slumdog Millionaire" writer Simon Beaufoy earned critical acclaim across the board for its funny and charming story about six unemployed men, including four former steel workers, who decide to form a male striptease act in order to get through some tough times. The film went on to land Academy Award nominations for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Original Musical or Comedy Score, even though it only won the latter.
Now, "The Full Monty" will have a chance at winning a whole new slate of awards because it's getting a sequel TV series at FX (on Hulu) with original cast members Robert Carlyle, Mark Addy, Lesley Sharp, Hugo Speer, Paul Barber, Steve Huison, Wim Snape, and Tom Wilkinson all reprising their roles from the movie. He’s filling the papers, he’s big news; the new kid on the Premier block so to speak. I wrote a book of his promotion season at Burnley: ‘Who Says Football Doesn’t Do Fairy Tales?’ - had my season ticket and loved the season from start to finish.
Despite being “only a supporter”, I was able to meet the Burnley manager three times: I sat in on a Press Conference, listened to him on local radio broadcasts, and there was a weekend for the away game at Yeovil when we went with the Supporters Club to stay over, and by happy coincidence we were in the same hotel as the team.
It had happened once before in the 2009 season when Burnley went up and we stayed in Plymouth with the team and won 2-1. Then we won promotion. I told this little tale to Sean Dyche in...

Hammer has acquired film rights to Jeanette Winterson’s The Daylight Gate, a novella released last year that is based on an English witch trial from the 17th century. Simon Oakes, Vice-Chairman of Exclusive Media and President & CEO of Hammer, made the announcement today and commented on bringing this novel to the big screen:
“The Hammer imprint has really delivered some fantastic new writing and shows the vibrancy and variety of the modern day horror genre. The books under our Arrow Books deal are in themselves a fantastic extension of the Hammer brand, and Jeanette’s novella ‘The Daylight Gate’ is a fresh, exciting and compelling fictional work.”
Here’s the official synopsis for The Daylight Gate: “Set in seventeenth-century England during the reign of James I—the monarch who wrote his own book on witchcraft—The Daylight Gate is best-selling writer Jeanette Winterson’s re-creation of a dark history full of complicated morality,...
