Leo Woodall won’t forget his time on set of The White Lotus season two anytime soon. The actor said this week his experience on the show felt like “one big holiday.”
“It was one of those shows where, because there were so many characters and so many storylines, there were so many days off,” Woodall told People, adding that the free time meant he and his co-stars spent a lot of time vacationing together.
Woodall played Jack in The White Lotus season two, a British boy who flirted with Haley Lu Richardson’s Portia and assisted his non-biological uncle Quentin (Tom Hollander) in a plan to murder Jennifer Coolidge’s Tanya. The second season of Mike White’s anthology show took place at a resort in Sicily, where the cast lived for several weeks during filming in 2022.
“It does feel like a world away now,” Woodall said of his time in Italy.

Jennifer Coolidge says it’s hard not to be jealous of The White Lotus season three casting news.
“I’m jealous of everyone that’s going. I just want to stress I’m not a good sport about it, but there’s nothing I can do,” she told Today this week.
Coolidge’s fan-favorite White Lotus character, Tanya, was also one of the only characters to appear in both seasons one and two, and won Emmys for both performances. Unfortunately, Tanya met a tragic demise at the end of season two.
“When they kill you, you have to accept it,” she continued. “Because it means they’re not calling for your costume sizes or anything. It’s over! I have to get another thing. I have to make another thing happen, I guess.”

Actor Julian Kostov is joining HBO’s The White Lotus, replacing Miloš Biković in the show’s cast.
Kostov (Shadow and Bone) will recur in the show’s third season, which is set to begin filming in Thailand this month. He joins the cast after HBO “decided to part ways” with Biković, following public criticism from Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs over Biković’s seeming support for Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
In a Jan. 24 social media post, the ministry wrote, “HBO, is it all right for you to work with a person who supports genocide & violates international law?” over a video clip of statements Biković has made about Ukraine and the annexation of Crimea. The Serbia-born actor has worked in Russia for the past decade; he received an award from Russian leader Vladimir Putin in 2018 and became a Russian citizen in 2021.

“The White Lotus” Season 3 has added Julian Kostov to its cast.
Kostov will appear in a recurring role in the HBO series that was previously held by Miloš Biković. Biković was recently cut from the series, however, over his support of Russia and Russian President Vladimir Putin in the country’s war against Ukraine.

So what actually happened to Meghann Fahy’s Daphne Sullivan after a Sicilian summer trip that yielded a dead body in the water?
“She keeps doing what’s she’s doing,” Fahy told Deadline at the Sundance studio about her posh, sexually free, no-rules-abiding wife of Cameron Sullivan (Theo James); a couple who get into the heads of the Spillers, played by Will Sharpe and Aubrey Plaza in season 2 of the HBO multi-Emmy winning show. If you watched the Season Two finale of The White Lotus, you know what happened to Jennifer Coolidge’s frazzled, impossibly wealthy Tanya. As she accepted her second Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series on Monday, she gave audiences a reminder of her laugh-out-loud death scene: “He says I’m definitely dead, so I’m going along with it.”
After thanking creator Mike White, she gave a shout-out to “all the evil gays” before getting the boot by Anthony Anderson’s mother. (At the last Emmys, the...

Good lord, White Lotus. Save some actors for the rest of Hollywood. The third season of the HBO series is set to begin filming in Thailand next month with a massive ensemble cast, but hell, why not add a few more? The latest addition to White Lotus season 3 includes Walton Goggins, one of my favourite actors, as well as Patrick Schwarzenegger (Gen V), Aimee Lou Wood (Sex Education), Sarah Catherine Hook (The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It), and Sam Nivola (Maestro).
As with the previous cast announcements, there are no details on the character Walton Goggins and the rest will be playing in White Lotus season 3. The rest of the cast includes Carrie Coon (The Gilded Age), Leslie Bibb (The Babysitter: Killer Queen), Jason Isaacs (The Death of Stalin), Michelle Monaghan (Mission: Impossible – Fallout), Parker Posey (Scream 3), Miloš Biković (The Challenge), Dom Hetrakul (Bangkok Dangerous), Christian Friedel...

Season 3, slated to begin filming in and around Koh Samui, Phuket, and Bangkok in February, will follow a new group of guests at another White Lotus property.

Haunted houses are a standard in horror for a reason. It’s not just the spectral invasion of our home that unnerves, but the unpredictability that comes with ghostly presences. A masked maniac can be stopped or temporarily subdued, but all bets are off in haunted houses.
This week’s “Stay Home, Watch Horror” streaming picks highlight the horror staple but not always in the way you’d expect. As always, here’s where you can watch them this week.

Before booting up M3GAN for producers James Wan and Jason Blum, Gerard Johnstone made his feature directorial debut on Housebound, an awesome horror comedy that’s brimming with bloody fun.
In the film, a young woman is forced to return to her childhood home after being placed under house arrest, where she suspects that something evil may be lurking.
If you’ve never seen this horror classic, it’s now streaming on the Bloody Disgusting-powered Screambox!
Megan previously wrote about Housebound a few years ago. Here’s her breakdown:
“Written and directed by Gerard Johnstone, Housebound is a brilliant feature debut that makes you wonder when his sophomore feature might be on its way. A horror-comedy can be a tricky enough thing to pull off- rarely are the scales of humor and horror in balance- but Johnstone infuses dark comedy with genuine suspense. There’s even some touching family drama to ground it all.

When Blumhouse dropped the trailer for the new killer doll movie "M3GAN," the internet exploded. The film sees producer James Wan and writer Akela Cooper reuniting following their bonkers horror fever dream "Malignant," bringing on New Zealand director Gerard Johnstone to tell the story of a roboticist named Gemma (Allison Williams), who gifts her recently orphaned niece Cady (Violet McGraw) a life-like A.I. doll meant to serve as a de facto best friend and babysitter. Unfortunately, as any killer doll story could have predicted, M3GAN has more than just playtime on her mind. Whether it's the dead-eyed dance moves or the fact the doll looks upsettingly close to the Renesmee Cullen robot baby of the "Twilight" films, people can't stop talking about "M3GAN" having the potential to be the next "Malignant."
Don't get it twisted, Wan and Cooper truly made something magical with last year's most-talked-about horror film, but...

The U.K. edition of “The Masked Singer,” comedy “Call My Agent” and drama “Tehran” were among the top winners Monday at the 49th annual International Emmy Awards in New York.
David Tennant took the trophy for best actor for his work as a deceptively meek serial killer in ITV’s “Des.” Hayley Squires won for actress for her role as a happily well-adjusted porn star in “Adult Material.”
Israeli drama “Tehran,” about a female Mossad agent who goes undercover in Iran, won the top drama series prize. Season 4 of “Call My Agent,” set among agents at a Paris talent rep firm, took the prize for comedy.
The ITV rendition of “Masked Singer” prevailed in the nonscripted entertainment category. Netflix’s “Hope Frozen: A Quest to Live Twice” took the documentary award, marking the first International Emmy honor for a program from Thailand.
“Insecure” star Yvonne Orji hosted the ceremony at Casa Cipriani.

Ryan Corr in ‘Below’ (Photo credit: David Dare Parker).
Madman Entertainment will release Maziar Lahooti’s debut feature Below on digital platforms and on DVD on July 8, bypassing cinemas.
Ryan Corr and Anthony Lapaglia star in the refugee detention centre action-drama produced by Nick Batzias of Good Thing Productions, Veronica Gleeson and Kate Neylon.
It will be the third Australian title to go straight to home entertainment since Covid-19 disrupted the film industry. Ben Lawrence’s Hearts and Bones went out as a Premium VOD release via Madman on May 6.
Flying Bark Productions’ animated feature 100% Wolf, scripted by Fin Edquist and directed by Alexs Stadermann and produced by Barbara Stephen and Alexia Gates-Foale, is taking the Pvod route from tomorrow. The voice cast is headed by Jai Courtney, Rhys Darby, Jane Lynch, Samara Weaving, Magda Szubanksi and Akmal Saleh.
In the pre-pandemic era, all three would have played in cinemas.

"Ready the cage." Madman Films has unveiled the first official trailer for an Australian pitch-black comedy titled Below, made by a Norwegian-born Iranian-Australian filmmaker named Maziar Lahooti. In a near-future, darknet grifter Dougie is recruited to work security at a refugee detention centre. There, he is drawn into an underground operation blackmailing detainees to fight for profit for in a "underground fight club". When tragedy strikes courageous fighter Azad, Dougie surprisingly finds his hitherto dormant conscience and takes a stand. This stars Ryan Corr, Anthony Lapaglia, Phoenix Raei, Alison Whyte, Robert Rabiah, Morgana O'Reilly, and Zenia Star. "Below isn’t afraid to get its hands dirty as it tackles hard issues, resulting in a deliberately provocative dare of a film that’s bound to get audiences talking." It looks like some seriously ballsy satire. Not sure if it'll be any good, but I'm still curious. Get your first look below.

Housebound - Blu-ray and DVD Director: Gerard Johnstone Cast: Morgana O'Reilly, Rima Te Wiata, Glen-Paul Waru, Ross Harper To quote my review from its world premiere at SXSW,"Housebound is a breath of fresh air for the often stale haunted-house genre; a smart, finely acted, appropriately silly and yet totally sincere horror movie made for people who have seen it all and want something a little different." It may not the scariest movie of the year, but Housebound is unquestionably one of the most entertaining and original. It's got an exceptional cast, a smart premise, and a real handle on when to be funny, when to be creepy, and when to collide the two. It's one of the best horror movies of 2014, so do not miss...

If looks could kill, Kylie would be on death row. In Gerard Johnstone's deadpan, diabolical, and haunted thriller Housebound, Kylie (Morgana O'Reilly) is an angry, insolent young woman, full of piss and vinegar, so when she's convicted of a crime and sentenced to eight months of detention in the home of her mother, Miriam (Rima Te Wiata), it feels like life imprisonment to her. Kylie resists any impulse to act in a civil manner toward Miriam or her stepfather Graeme (Ross Harper), and is hostile in her court-ordered sessions with psychiatrist Dennis (Cameron Rhodes). Kylie's attitude hardens when she learns that Miriam has long felt that the family home is haunted, an idea that the young woman dismisses out of hand. Miriam, after all, chatters...

One of my favorite films at SXSW this year was Housebound - you can read my thoughts on the horror-comedy here. XLrator Media has picked the film up for U.S. distro which is great news because now you'll be able to see how awesome it is. The distributor is planning a fall 2014 release under its Macabre label. Morgana O'Reilly stars as Kylie Bucknell who is forced to return to the house she grew up in when the court places her on home detention.

Austin - Sometimes at the festival you walk into a room knowing nothing, sit down, and get your skull punched in by a movie that is calibrated perfectly, that knows exactly what it wants to do, and that seems almost unnaturally confident considering it was made by a first-time feature director. "Housebound" is one of those movies. There is something about the New Zealand sense of humor that I find enormously charming. It's very dry, very matter of fact, and "Housebound" is that rare film that manages to be funny without defusing any of its scares. What starts out as one genre of film turns out to be something entirely different, and instead of that feeling like one big cheat, it's actually handled in such a way that you can't help but admire the writing and the careful way in which things are revealed. Gerard Johnstone, who wrote and directed "Housebound,...

"A troubled young woman is convicted of petty felonies and forced to withstand house arrest in the home of her estranged mother, blank slate of a stepfather, and a bunch of evil spirits who make creepy noises..."
Yeah, Housebound probably sounds like a mash-up of two or three clunkers you'd probably rent from Redbox and end up hating. Something about terms like "troubled woman," "house arrest," "estranged mother," and "evil spirits" can make a movie sound like a dry and predictable affair. Fortunately that is not the case with Housebound, which comes from New Zealand and therefore has a strong sense of humor, a nice dose of legitimate creepiness, a decent portion of gory mayhem, and some very appealing performers. Housebound is more of a horror / thriller / mystery with a good sense of humor than it is a horror comedy, but whatever the "subgenre," it's always nice when a film can deliver scares,...

These days American haunted-house movies tend to follow a pretty simple formula: People move into a house, start to notice something creepy, and then they spend about an hour wandering around dimly lit hallways to inspect creaky floorboards. Thankfully, Housebound is not an American haunted-house movie. It hails from New Zealand, where apparently they haven't gotten the full memo that haunted-house movies should not deviate from this formula. Sure, it's got a familiar setup, but it's where first-time feature filmmaker Gerard Johnstone takes things next that really turns this into a horror movie that should be on every genre fan's radar. It's about Kylie (Morgana O'Reilly), an angsty, angry young woman who is sentenced to house arrest after she hilariously...

Gerard Johnstone's directorial debut "Housebound" has its world premiere at SXSW tonight in the "Visions" section, a New Zealand comedy thriller starring Morgana O'Reilly, Rima Te Wiata, Glen-Paul Waru, Cameron Rhodes, Millen Baird, Ross Harper, Bruce Hopkins, Ryan Lampp, Ian Mune and Wallace Chapman. Indiewire's pleased to premiere an exclusive clip and stills from the film, below. Here's the SXSW description: Kylie Bucknell is forced to return to the house she grew up in when the court places her on home detention. Her punishment is made all the more unbearable by the fact she has to live there with her mother Miriam -- a well-intentioned blabbermouth who's convinced that the house is haunted. Kylie dismisses Miriam's superstitions as nothing more than a distraction from a life occupied by boiled vegetables & small town gossip. However, when she too becomes privy to unsettling whispers & strange bumps in the night, she begins...

The 2014 SXSW "Film Features Program" includes 115 titles, and along with the previously announced zombie culture documentary Doc of the Dead, there's a lot for the horror crowd...
...including special screenings of the original Godzilla and Texas Chain Saw Massacre, early looks at upcoming TV shows "From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series" and "Penny Dreadful," the U.S. premiere of Alejandro Jodorowsky's The Dance of Reality, and new films from the Spierig brothers, Nacho Vigalondo, and Jim Jarmusch.
The genre-heavy "Midnighter" lineup will be announced next week along with the list of short films, but in the meantime here are the horror highlights (or what we assume will be of interest given their descriptions) to be on the lookout for during the fest.
Note that new for 2014, they've introduced the "Episodic" category, created to highlight innovative new work hitting the small screen.
