With production now underway on Noah Baumbach’s next feature for Netflix in New York (before heading to London), the full ensemble has been unveiled. While currently untitled, reports indicate the drama, described as a “funny and emotional coming-of-age film about adults,” could be titled Jay Kelly.
Joining George Clooney and Adam Sandler in the feature are Laura Dern, Billy Crudup, Riley Keough, Greta Gerwig, Jim Broadbent, Patrick Wilson, Emily Mortimer, Lars Eidinger, Grace Edwards, Patsy Ferran, Isla Fisher, Thaddea Graham, Josh Hamilton, Eve Hewson, Stacy Keach, Nicôle Lecky, Louis Partridge, Alba Rohrwacher, and Charlie Rowe.

British creative Nicôle Lecky has said the streamers didn’t understand the nuances behind her BAFTA-winning BBC drama Mood when she was pitching the show.
Lecky, who is working on another untitled BBC series, said “there was a push to nail [Mood] as one thing” when she was speaking with the SVoDs, whereas she praised the nation’s public broadcaster for understanding the specificities behind Mood.
The BAFTA-winning musical drama aired nearly two years ago and was based on Lecky’s one-woman play Superhoe. It garnered strong reviews from critics for its originality and understanding of social media culture, beating This is Going to Hurt to the coveted Best Mini-Series BAFTA last year.
“The streamers wanted to say, ‘This is about one thing and we can market it to a very specific audience’,” Lecky told today’s Outside the Box event in London. “In doing that, the nuance and specificity was...

Ella Purnell (“Yellowjackets”) will star in and executive produce “Sweetpea,” a female driven original drama series from pay TV operator Sky.
The series is adapted from C.J. BAFTA has shaken up major categories and rung in some eligibility changes as entries open for the 2024 TV awards.
Limited drama is a new category for scripted one-off programs or series that tell a complete story over 1-19 episodes, replacing separate categories for single drama and mini-series. “The introduction of limited drama maintains the opportunity for single self-contained films to be eligible following a decline in entries to the single drama category in recent years,” BAFTA said.
To put this in perspective, at the 2023 awards, “I Am Ruth,” starring Kate Winslet, won the single drama category, while Nicôle Lecky’s “Mood” won the best mini-series category. In 2024, there will only be one winner, under the new limited drama category. The drama series category remains unchanged.
The changes were flagged earlier by BAFTA. As set out in the 2023 rulebook, categories with under 20 entries will see three, rather than the standard four nominations announced,...

Kate Winslet and Kit Connor took the top acting prizes at the U.K.’s Royal Television Society Programme Awards on Tuesday.
Winslet won leading actor, female, for Channel 4’s “I am Ruth.” Winslet won for playing Ruth, who witnesses her teenage daughter Freya (Winslet’s real-life daughter Mia Threapleton) retreating into herself as she becomes consumed by the pressures of social media.
Winslet made a powerful speech, saying: “It has never been a harder time to be a parent, it has never been a more dangerous time to be a child in an online world. So let’s hope that the next Online Safety Bill implements significant and seismic change that will fundamentally help towards securing the safety of all of our children by recognizing and criminalizing harmful content.”
Connor won leading actor, male, for popular Netflix show “Heartstopper.”

BAFTA seemingly agree – and are spotlighting talent from in-front of and behind the lens from across the UK & US, in their annual initiative titled BAFTA Breakthrough, with alumni consisting of the likes of Tom Holland, Florence Pugh, Letitia Wright & Jessie Buckley.
This year we had the pleasure to speak to two of the breakthroughs, in British actress Rose Ayling-Ellis, as well as American actor Brandon Perea, who made his name with a role in Jordan Peele’s Nope. We spoke about their thoughts on being named a Breakthrough star, and what it means for them personally and for their respective careers. It might be tempting to dismiss passionate singer Sasha (creator Nicôle Lecky) as she spirals out of control and leaves her family, ex-boyfriend, and home in the dust. Tempestuous and desperate to become famous enough to achieve her dreams, Sasha is introduced to her audience in flashes of messy nights out, blurry memories of bad decisions past, careening camera angles and sporadic song breaks as her imagination runs wild and reveals glimpses into her psyche.
As based on Lecky’s 2019 monologue “Superhoe” (a great title sadly lost in translation) and directed by Stroma Cairns and Dawn Shadforth, “Mood” appears to tell the story of a woman determined to burn her life to the ground. Instead, the BBC show (premiering Nov. 6 on BBC America and AMC+) becomes something else — and then something else, and something else, and something else. One after the other, Lecky’s shrewd scripts peel off layers of...

The musical drama Mood arrives on BBC America having followed a one-woman-show-to-tv-series pipeline similar to the one that previously yielded Chewing Gum and Fleabag.
Does that mean Mood creator/star Nicôle Lecky is the next Michaela Coel or Phoebe Waller-Bridge? That’s a high and fairly unreasonable bar to expect any relative newcomer to reach, but based on this series, it’s obvious that Lecky is a charismatic and versatile performer with a distinctive writing voice and some provocative, if maybe not revelatory, things on her mind.
At only six episodes of 45-ish minutes apiece, Mood is worth watching as Lecky’s breakout, regardless of whether or not she follows in the sprawling footsteps of those recent generational talents.
Lecky plays Sasha, a largely directionless 20-something living with her mom (Jessica Hynes), stepdad (Paul Kaye) and bratty teenage half-sister (Mia Jenkins) in East London.

Welcome to the 192nd episode of TV’s Top 5, The Hollywood Reporter’s TV podcast.
Every week, hosts Lesley Goldberg (West Coast TV editor) and Daniel Fienberg (chief TV critic) break down the latest TV news with context from the business and critical sides, welcome showrunners, executives and other guests, and provide a critical guide of what to watch (or skip, as the case may be).
This week, we’re thrilled to put Nicôle Lecky, the creator and star of BBC America/AMC’s Mood, on your radar. She joins us for an insightful conversation about the six-episode series that was based on her stage play, Superhoe. Nicôle Lecky, the creator and star of the BBC musical drama “Mood,” has signed with UTA.
The agency will represent the actor-writer in all areas. The signing comes a day after the British debut of Lecky’s buzzy drama “Mood.”
The BBC Three drama premiered in the U.K. on March 1 to rave reviews. Produced by Bonafide Films, the six-part music-based series stars Lecky as Sasha Clayton, an East London wannabe singer-rapper who’s forced to fend for herself when she’s kicked out of her family home.
After she meets party girl Carly, she’s introduced to the world of social media influencing and the divide between her dreams of becoming a singer and maintaining an online persona continues to grow.
Eventually, Sasha finds herself struggling to escape a world that’s far darker than she ever imagined.

Nicôle Lecky, the creator of BBC Three and BBC America drama Mood, believes the TV adaptation of her award-winning play will satisfy America’s desire to “see a different side of Britishness.”
Featuring an original soundtrack performed by Lecky, Mood, from The Last Post producer Bonafide, starts tomorrow night on the newly-relaunched BBC Three linear channel and follows Sasha, played by Lecky, an aspiring musician who spends her days smoking weed and stalking her ex-boyfriend.
Speaking exclusively to Deadline as distributor BBC Studios shops the show at this week’s Showcase, Lecky said “Americans want to see a different side of Britishness,” with Mood set to air on BBC America later this year.
“They’ve seen a lot of Brits sipping tea and gang shows but not much like this, about a normal girl in a pocket of London who goes on a huge journey,” she added.
