It's been a rocky year for Oscar winners embracing roles in fantasy blockbusters. Eddie Redmayne delivered a pungent ham and cheese performance in The Wachowskis' Jupiter Ascending, while Julianne Moore turns it up to 11 for her role as an evil witch in this week's Seventh Son.
Moore was years away from even setting foot on the set of Still Alice when she made Seventh Son (it's been trapped in post-production hell for a while), but it does make you wonder if there's some truth to the myth that Oscar winners seem destined for an immediate career stumble. Moore at least seems to be having fun with her role as Seventh Son's Mother Malkin. To say she's chewing the scenery would be a slight misnomer seeing as so...

Who doesn't adore Julianne Moore?
Especially in Still Alice, the film for which bookmakers are betting she'll take home the Best Actress Oscar, Moore's portrayal of a linguistics professor battling early onset Alzheimer's is letter perfect. Myself having a sibling now encased in a memory care facility in Florida after being ravaged by the same affliction, every step of Alice's deterioration is recognizable: the random loss of memories, the awareness she's losing her identity, the outbursts of anger, the inability to control bodily functions, and the short-lived moments when the person you have always loved reemerges out of a fog of despair.
Sadly, Moore's performance and that of her peers in Seventh Son capture a forgetfulness, too, although not one symptomatic of an infirmity, but one characteristic of creative bankruptcy. By the time this adaptation of Joseph Delaney's bestselling young-adult classic, The Spook's Apprentice, ends and you've emptied your bladder in your mall's stall,...

The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water finally unseated Clint Eastwood's runaway hit American Sniper at the weekend box office, while a pair of high-priced fantasies flopped.
Paramount Pictures' SpongeBob Movie earned $56 million in North America, a huge debut for the animated Nickelodeon big-screen transfer, according to estimates Sunday. That finally pushed American Sniper off the top spot after a three-week reign. The Navy Seal drama took in $24.2 million in its fourth week of wide release.
The Wachowskis' lavish science-fiction adventure Jupiter Ascending opened with just $19 million, a meager amount for a $175 million production. Warner Bros. delayed the release of the movie, starring Channing Tatum and Mila Kunis, from last summer.
Universal's Seventh Son, a supernatural thriller set in medieval times, debuted with a scant $7.1 million. The film, produced by Legendary Pictures and starring Jeff Bridges, cost nearly $100 million to make.

Chicago – I can’t decide which is worse: the “fake deep talk” from Jeff Bridges in “Seventh Son” or the “angry whisper talk” from Eddie Redmayne in “Jupiter Ascending,” which also opened on Friday. Both speech impediments are ugly fish out of water, both films are getting punished by critics and both are underperforming at domestic box offices.
Ironically, both movies have also also been quite delayed and now we see why. “Jupiter Ascending” opened two days ago after initially being slated to open in July 2014. That film’s push back was justified to finish its extensive special effects, which “The Matrix” creators did without remembering to fix its laughable acting and weak story.
Rating: 2.0/5.0
Also knowing it was in trouble, “Seventh Son” was originally supposed to open way back in Feb. 2013, but the film was pushed back once and then a second time to Feb. 2015. It even changed distribution...

Following a lengthy wait, Seventh Son has finally made its way to theaters. The epic fantasy centers on a professional spook (Jeff Bridges), who takes a dashing young apprentice (Ben Barnes) under his wing as the two prepare to face the end of the world. Together they square off against Mother Malkin (Julianne Moore) and her army of deadly minions.
Directed by Sergei Bodrov, Seventh Son is based on the novel The Spook’s Apprentice by Joseph Delaney.
At a recent New York press conference for the film - Bridges, Moore and Barnes discussed their personal connections to their roles and how themes of fate and destiny have played out off-screen.
This film talks a lot about destiny and fate. How much has fate played a role in your lives?
Jeff Bridges: Destiny and fate? You guys wanna go first on that one?
Ben Barnes: Nobody wants to go first on that!

Just as the film bludgeoned me almost immediately over the head with its insipid nature, I’m going to just jump right into the plot of Seventh Son, or at least what I can make of it. It’s hard to decipher exactly what Jeff Bridges is saying under his accent that sounds like a cross between Gandalf and Bane from The Dark Knight Rises but I’ll do my best. A young Master Gregory (Jeff Bridges) locks up a powerful witch that goes by the name Mother Malkin (Julianne Moore) in a cave atop a mountain as the film begins. She remains restrained until a “Blood Moon” rises – something that happens once every century – which then causes her to transform into a dragon and escape her slumber. In those years that have passed, Gregory has continued to become a powerful “spook” (think wizard/witch-slayer). Malkin’s return though results...

Seventh Son is the Chicken McNugget of movies. You know there are better options out there when it comes to your chicken-eating selections, but something about the greasy simplicity and drive thru nature of the McNugget calls to you. Before you take a bite you know what you're going to get and to hide the actual taste of the nugget you drench it in a dipping sauce. As your teeth crack the crisp (if it just came out of the frier) outer shell and squish through the processed meat inside, your mouth is covered with a viscous layer of... something, preventing the taste from leaving your mouth long after you've swallowed. In an effort to fix this you take another bite, this time dipped in even more sauce, but the result is the same. The McNugget is a mirage. It isn't chicken and no amount of sauce is going to...

Despite featuring Julianne Moore, Jeff Bridges, nude witches and slobbering giants, this swords’n’sorcery CGI epic is loud and mostly charmless
You’d think Julianne Moore leading a coven of witches who can transform into dragons, bears and Djimon Hounsou would be more entertaining. Moore seems to be having a good time with Seventh Son, but on the sly, as if director Sergei Bodrov is behind the camera like a schoolmaster warning her to stop flailing her arms around and “take this seriously”. It’s not a smart way to play this material.
Seventh Son is a exercise in sword and sorcery cliché based on the first of 14 Ya books in Joseph Delaney’s Wardstone Chronicles series. I doubt we’ll see follow-ups put to film, as Seventh Son has been sitting on a shelf for over a year; its first marketing materials debuted at San Diego Comic-Con in 2012.

Based on Joseph Delaney's The Wardstone Chronicles -- more specifically on the saga's first volume, The Spook's Apprentice -- Seventh Son tells the story of Thomas (Ben Barnes), a young farmer chosen to be the new apprentice of Master Gregory (Jeff Bridges), a Spook whose job is to fight evil forces. Issues get more personal when Mother Malkin (Julianne Moore) escapes from her prison and seeks revenge by destroying everything with her army of evil witches and sorcerers. As one may deduct from that plot, Sergei Bodrov's film does not have a lot to contribute to fantasy: Seventh Son appears like a mixture of Van Helsing and Buffy the Vampire Slayer, to which basic generic elements were added. The universe depicted in Delaney's adaptation thus...

Just when you thought that Jeff Bridges’ on-screen accents couldn’t get any more ridiculous than his rootin-tootin’ cowboy persona in R.I.P.D, Seventh Son comes along with another cartoonish turn from the actor, this time as a medieval Ghostbuster with a mouth full of marbles. Unfortunately, the comparisons to R.I.P.D don’t stop there as far as Bridges’ latest film is concerned, as Seventh Son is another slight blockbuster blunder whose clunkiness reveals why Sergey Bodrov’s fantasy adventure sat shelved for roughly three years. Blame it on unfocused post-3D, unavoidable comparisons to Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters and lax character development – a dangerous trifecta that puts a damper on the unintentional comedy found in the few lines of dialogue Bridges mumbles that are just clear enough to understand.

Chances are you saw the "Seventh Son" spot that aired as part of Sunday night's big Super Bowl game (the one that played while Katy Perry was offstage, partying with her land-shark homeboys). The swashbuckling fantasy, starring Jeff Bridges and Ben Barnes and based on the novel "The Spook's Apprentice" by Joseph Delaney, features a lot of off-the-wall monster action in its various promotional materials but not nearly enough Julianne Moore as a villainous witch goddess named Mother Malkin. Well, here we are, answering your prayers with an exclusive scene from the movie (out this Friday).
In this brief clip, Djimon Hounsou, playing Radu (a character not in the original novel), brings Mother Malkin a small troop of assassins, to rid the world of The Spook (Bridges) and his apprentice, Tom Ward (Barnes). One of these assassins, who have a cool, made-of-granite look to them, has the misfortune of attempting eye contact with Julianne Moore,...

Legendary Pictures released a great Super Bowl spot for Jeff Bridges’ upcoming fantasy film called Seventh Son, which is finally set to open in theaters this week. I’ve been looking forward to seeing this movie since the first footage from it was revealed a couple years ago at San Diego Comic-Con. I’ve been hearing and reading a lot of mixed reactions to the film, but I think it will deliver some solid entertainment. I enjoy watching these kinds of movies!

It has been a long and not so pretty path in the two years since "Seventh Son" was originally supposed to be released in February 2013. It got pushed back to two different dates before finally settling on next Friday, and the movie even changed studio hands along the way. In short, it's not the best sign that this is a quality product. And yet, Universal is paying primo Super Bowl advertising bucks to try and get people to care about this one. Jeff Bridges, Julianne Moore, Alicia Vikander, Ben Barnes and more star in this adaptation of Joseph Delaney's novel about a prophecy, an apprentice and mystical powers or something. Frankly, we're not too invested to figure it out at this point, but here's a handy synopsis: In a time of enchantments when legends and magic collide, the sole remaining warrior of a mystical order (Oscar® winner Jeff Bridges...

With movies from blockbuster franchises like “Star Wars,” “The Avengers” and James Bond rolling out, industry insiders and analysts say the 2015 box office is a good bet to be the biggest in history.

“Hell awakens. Let us give the world a taste of what is to come.” Julianne Moore’s Mother Malkin wants to raise some hell in Seventh Son, a Legendary movie due out this winter from Universal. Set in a fantasy world where witches and colossal creatures roam the lands, the film stars Jeff Bridges and Ben Barnes as a duo taking on evil of all shapes and sizes, as evidenced in the film’s new international trailer.

Like a phoenix rising very slowly and wearily from the ashes, fantasy adventure Seventh Son will soon land in theatres. After a very lengthy stint on the shelf following the Warner Bros./Legendary Pictures divorce, its new owners, Universal, have cobbled together an international trailer. The question is, though, will it outshine the somewhat hit and miss efforts of the last preview?
Early talk surrounding the epic, which is directed by Sergei Bodrov, has revolved around its addiction to genre conventions. Warriors, CGI monsters, dodgy accents, and dingy clothing are a few of the typical fantasy tropes that the pic is harnessing to ensnare audiences. If we’re to throw this international trailer into that mix, it seems Universal are attempting to capitalise on the success of Game Of Thrones. But without the cunning, genius or creativity.
To be honest, it’s a damn shame these teasers don’t seem...

We saw the first footage from Seventh Son over a year ago at the 2013 ComicCon. Since then it's had a somewhat leisurely journey to the screen thanks to the divorce proceedings between Warner Bros. and Legendary. But having now settled into its new Universal custody, here's a celebratory new trailer for the fantasy adventure. Jeff Bridges, Julianne Moore, Ben Barnes and Alicia Vikander star, and the director is Sergei Bodrov. The film is an adaptation of The Spook's Apprentice, the first of Joseph Delaney's best-selling kids series The Wardstone Chronicles. Barnes plays seventh-son-of-a-seventh-son Tom, Luke Skywalker to Bridges' Ben Kenobi, learning the ropes of witch-hunting and coming to terms with his supernatural abilities. Their first major adversary is Moore's Mother Malkin, although it's not the first time Gregory has encountered her: he buried her in a pit covered with magic-countering iron bars years before (that kind of half-arsed temporary...

Seventh Son, the loose adaption of Joseph Delaney's The Spook's Apprentice, has had a pretty hard time of it, being pushed back three times since it's original release date of February 15th 2013. Now, it has a new release date, 16th February 2015, so here's hoping fourth times the charm. To go along with the new release date, a new trailer has been released, featuring plenty of sword play, magic, and another of Jeff Bridges' strange accents.

Once slated for release last fall, and then pushed back to January of 2014, the fantasy adaptation The Seventh Son, based on The Last Apprentice (or The Wardstone Chronicles) book series by Joseph Delaney, is finally coming to theaters. Universal inherited the Legendary Pictures project from Warner Bros. when the production company switched studios, and it's getting an expected dumping ground release in February of next year. It's a shame, because there seem to be some cool creatures and action in this new trailer, and Legendary is pushing their Godzilla street cred alongside a showcase of some big monsters to get audiences on board for the early 2015 release that stars Jeff Bridges and Julianne Moore. Watch it! Here's the new trailer for Universal & Legendary's The Seventh Son, originally from Apple: And here's the new poster, which doesn't do much to inspire confidence at all: When Thomas (Ben Barnes), seventh son of a seventh son,...

Warner Bros. was originally going to release Seventh Son from director Sergei Bodrov in January 2014, but after Legendary bounced from WB to Universal the film was in limbo until finally re-emerging on the release calendar on February 6, 2015 and now with Universal distributing. Today the first trailer for the film since the distributor switch has arrived, hoping to reignite what little interest there was for this picture in the first place outside of some passing interest in the cast. Based on Joseph Delaney's young-adult novel series, the story centers on Thomas Ward (Ben Barnes), the seventh son of a seventh son, who becomes the apprentice to an exorcist named Master Gregory (Jeff Bridges). Together the two combat ghosts and witches in the 1700s, but they must soon battle with Mother Malkin (Julianne Moore), the queen of evil, as Tom falls for a young witch named Alice (Alicia Vikander). When Disney announced they were sending Star Wars: Episode VII to theaters on December 18th. 2015, many wondered when Universal was going to move Legendary's adaptation of Warcraft to get out of the way of the sci-fi giant. Now the studio has made the right call and will release the film on March 11th, 2016 instead. That's a smart move, not only because there's not really anything schedule for 2016 other than a Marvel movie, The Amazing Spider-Man 3 and some other blockbusters, but this pretty much guarantees the film will dominate in the spring slot. In addition, the studio also announced release dates for some other upcoming projects, in addition to a new release date for the delayed fantasy The Seventh Son. After originally being dated for release this past February, Warner Bros. delayed the Legendary Entertainment production of The Seventh Son, an adaptation of The Last Apprentice (or The Wardstone Chronicles) book series by Joseph Delaney,...

Based on the book series “The Last Apprentice” by Joseph Delaney, “Seventh Son” tells the story of Master Gregory (Jeff Bridges) who faces the witch Mother Malkin (Julianne Moore) years after he imprisoned her. He must train an apprentice, Tom Ward, (Ben Barnes) to join him in the epic battle otherwise she will take over the world with her evil powers. “I'm a big fan of mythology and I saw this as a chance to make a modern day myth,” said Bridges at Comic-Con in San Diego on July 20. “Also, it talks about good and evil and my idea is that good and evil are really the same side of the same coin.” Barnes (“The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian”) also joined the cast because he was intrigued by the theme of good versus evil and also the fact there are plenty of witches, ghosts and warlocks in the story.
