Zayn Malik is gearing up to release his long-awaited fourth studio album, and he’s co-produced the upcoming LP with Grammy-winner Dave Cobb, Rolling Stone can exclusively confirm.
In working with Cobb — one of Nashville’s most accomplished and in-demand producers — Malik will explore new sonic territory and lean into pairing his unmistakable vocals with live instrumentation. The soulful singer-songwriter had spent several years writing the album at his home in rural Pennsylvania before enlisting Cobb’s help as a co-producer. There’s no release date or title yet, but...

Semisonic, the Nineties rock outfit behind the perennial late-night anthem “Closing Time,” are back with a new song, “The Rope,” which will appear on their first album in over 20 years, Little Bit of Sun, out Nov. 3.
“The Rope” has a bright alt-rock crunch bolstered by brisk horns and piano, as well as a rich halo of backing vocals. Things were supposed to be looking up. It was the fall of 2021, and live music was finally coming back after 18 months of a pandemic death spiral. Carrie Underwood is a mom of two boys. In 2018, the country artist opened up about her three miscarriages — and how music became “therapeutic” to her. That’s especially true of her 2018 song “Cry Pretty,” which was inspired by traumatic events in her personal life.

Underwood sometimes details her personal life through music, elaborating on some of her hardest moments. In 2018, Underwood revealed that she suffered three miscarriages in the span of two years — before the birth of her son Jacob.
As noted by Hello Magazine, Underwood noted the rhetoric surrounding miscarriages, although she didn’t consider it a “dirty secret,” saying it’s something “many women go through.”

The most important character in Taylor Jenkins Reid’s novel Daisy Jones & The Six? It’s the music – and any devotee of the book, a fictional oral history of a Seventies rock band, will have strong feelings about exactly how it should sound. It might have shades of Stevie Nicks, a touch of Joni Mitchell, a dash of The Eagles’ soft rock – and it has to feel vital, like it “takes a piece of your heart out and shows it to you”, as the group’s singer Billy Dunne puts it. The success of Prime Video’s Daisy Jones TV adaptation, then, was always going to ride on the songs – but how do you write the perfect track for an entirely made-up artist?

A range of artists including Maren Morris, Luke Combs, Willie Nelson, Zach Bryan and more are among this year’s country music Grammy nominees. While some omissions were definitely shocking, the nominations this year reflect some popular picks as well as lesser known songs by beloved artists. But who’s scooping up the awards come February?
SEEGrammy predictions: Can Tony champ ‘A Strange Loop’ hold off Michael Jackson in Musical Theater Album race? Best Country Solo Performance
The odds leader here is Willie Nelson for his cover of the standard “Live Forever.” Nelson has proved to be a Grammy favorite in recent years, winning this category in 2020 for “Ride Me Back Home.” As such, and in a lineup with four modern stars, it seems like the passion for Nelson and the respect for his legacy will carry him to a win here.
Next in line might be Zach Bryan’s “Something in the Orange.

There were major changes in how these nominees were decided. Chief among those was the elimination of the nomination review committees. For decades those committees would take the top 15 or 20 vote-getters in their categories and decide which would be the final nominees. Those secret, anonymous panels often produced surprising results: this past year The Weeknd was shut out entirely. In early 2017, Wanda Jackson showed up late to a scheduled writing session in Nashville with Angaleena Presley and Vanessa Olivarez. Jackson, then in her late Seventies, explained to her new co-writers that she’d fallen while getting off the plane from her native Oklahoma City and showed them some of the bruising on her legs and face. Presley showered the rockabilly legend with gratitude for making the trip despite her injuries, when, as Presley recalls, “the most shit-eating grin I’d ever seen billowed across her legendary face.”

Maren Morris got an assist from John Mayer at the 2021 Grammy Awards, as the singer-guitarist joined the country-pop vocalist for a performance of her nominated song “The Bones.”
Mayer sang harmony and played guitar, offering a fierce solo at the song’s midpoint that gave “The Bones” extra bite. But this was Morris’ moment, and she showed off her voice throughout, hitting high notes and taking off on dazzling runs that kept pace with Mayer’s fretwork.
I jumped, I screamed, and I even shed a tear at the end.

Alicia Keys and Brandi Carlile surprised viewers of a voter turnout special Thursday night with a duet performance of a new song, “A Beautiful Noise,” which they immediately released as a single following the premiere on “Every Vote Counts: A Celebration of Democracy.”
Keys co-hosted the CBS special along with Kerry Washington and America Ferrera. When Carlile was added as a guest artist in recent days and tweeted that she was “doing a very special performance with someone I’ve wanted to collaborate with for a really long time,” there wasn’t much doubt a duet with Keys was in store (notwithstanding Carlile’s possible lifelong desire to harmonize with Offset or Dan + Shay). But the existence of a new song was still a surprise… though not as surprising as the songwriting credits for the new tune.

But the existence of a new song was still a surprise… though not as surprising as the songwriting credits for the new tune.

Tim McGraw returned to The Late Show with Stephen Colbert Monday night to perform “Hard to Stay Mad At,” a track from his new solo album, Here on Earth, his first in five years.
Seated underneath a chandelier and in front of a towering window view in his home, McGraw and his band performed the understated but soothing track, co-written by Lori McKenna, Shane McAnally and Luke Laird. McGraw sang with his trademark ease: “If you weren’t so damn stubborn, we would’ve never got this far/Be just another casualty,...

For the title cut of Stoughton, Massachusetts-based Lori McKenna’s forthcoming album The Balladeer, the Grammy-winning songwriter behind “Girl Crush” veers away from her usual autobiographical material for a fictional peek into the world of a musician who “hangs in the darkest bars with downtrodden bleeding-hearts.” It’s there she encounters a guitar player who, in addition to securing her lyrical assistance, has quickly won her heart.
Naturally, as a tortured artist, the balladeer fears that a happy relationship might lead to sacrificing access to the pain that has fueled...

Ahead of the July 24th release of her upcoming album, The Balladeer, Lori McKenna remotely joins host – and fellow musician – Chris Shiflett for the latest episode of his Walkin’ the Floor podcast. In a 45-minute Zoom session prefaced by Shiflett’s admission that he has “been obsessed with her music ever since [her 2016 LP] The Bird and the Rifle came out,” McKenna talks about her songwriting process, her reasons for staying in the same New England town where she was born, and how lacking a Southern accent was a disadvantage when she started recording.

Sara Bareilles still isn’t going to write you a love song, but she will happily offer up the early days of her songwriting career as inspiration for an earnest new Apple TV+ drama.
Little Voice, which premieres Friday on the streaming service, draws heavily from the Grammy winner’s life and experiences. It follows a fledgling artist named Bess (Star‘s Brittany O’Grady) at the start of her journey in the biz. (Watch a trailer.) But Bess is not a lightly fictionalized Sara, Bareilles is quick to point out during a chat with TVLine.

It’s the first cut issued from McKenna’s forthcoming album The Balladeer.
With upcoming graduation ceremonies and this weekend’s Mother’s Day celebrations in the offing, “When You’re My Age” would elicit an emotional reaction under even the best of circumstances.

Every country songwriter needs a great story-song, and Hailey Whitters found hers in “Janice at the Hotel Bar.” Co-written by the Iowa native with Lori McKenna (Little Big Town’s “Girl Crush”), the gentle ballad not only tells the titular woman’s real-life tale, but imparts her hard-won advice on how to carve out a fulfilling existence. Spoiler alert: It’s not about money or Instagram likes.
The eightysomething Janice — who held court one night for an acquaintance of McKenna’s — mows her own lawn and buys generic face cream from Walgreen’s.

During the second of her six sold-out concerts at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium, Brandi Carlile joined Lucie Silvas — the British-born, Nashville-based singer whose vocal ferocity and incisive songwriting are akin to her own — for a thundering cover of Bonnie Tyler’s “Total Eclipse of the Heart.” Dusky and soulful, Silvas’ potent pipes, like Carlile’s extraordinary instrument, are suited to an array of styles, but there’s nothing quite like hearing either singer soar to the heavens on a dramatic power ballad. Witness their encore performance of the 1983 hit, which...

Since then, she’s won three Grammy Awards, formed the Highwomen, performed a tribute to Joni Mitchell, produced records for Tanya Tucker and the Secret Sisters,...

Sara Bareilles is back at the Grammys with the eighth nomination of her career, but it’s the first in the Americana field, where she’s up for Best American Roots Performance for “Saint Honesty,” a song she co-wrote with Grammy-winning country songwriter Lori McKenna.
