The second season, which culminated tonight, saw Humphrey and Martha very nearly tie the knot, while their fostering journey came to a heartwarming conclusion as they welcomed Ryan into their home. As Alex Horne tells it, Taskmaster was born out of professional jealousy. In 2009, he became a parent and so broke with almost a decade of tradition by not taking a show to the Edinburgh Fringe. That same year, his friend and former flatmate Tim Key won the festival’s top comedy award, for which Horne had been nominated in 2003.
At home and envious, Horne sent out emails inviting 20 comedians – including Key – to take part in a new competition in which he would set them a different task each month for a year. The results would be shared in a live performance at the 2010 Edinburgh Fringe called The Taskmaster.
The result was organised chaos. An overdraft of comedians (a Fringe-specific collective noun) plus a pianist joined Horne on stage to reveal the results, set tie-break tasks, and eventually crown a winner.
“So this is The Taskmaster,” Horne told the crowd, “It...

Focus Features has acquired worldwide rights to Carey Mulligan comedy “The Ballad of Wallis Island,” Variety can confirm exclusively.
They will release the film in the U.S. while Universal Pictures International is handling global distribution.
The film, which was previously titled “One For The Money,” is directed by James Griffiths (“Cuban Fury”) and produced by Steve Coogan’s Baby Cow productions (“Philomena”).
The screenplay was written by Tom Basden (“After Life”) and Tim Key (“Great Expectations”), who also star in the film alongside Sian Clifford (“Fleabag”) and Akemnji Ndifornyen (“Famalam”).
“The Ballad of Wallis Island” tells the story of Charles (played by Key), an eccentric lottery winner who tries to reunite his favorite musical duo Mortimer-McGwyer (Mulligan and Basden) despite the fact they split up many years ago. Making things even more awkward, the musicians – Nell Mortimer and Herb McGwyer — were also once romantically involved with each other a la Sonny and Cher.

The best podcast hosts are like friends, but better, because you’ll never have to go to their wedding and can click unsubscribe if they get weird. They’re company when you’re not dressed for company, officemates when you work from home, and family with a pause button.
Comedians Ed Gamble and James Acaster on the Off Menu podcast are especially good company because they’re funny gluttons. A cheese boy and a dessert boy/genie who, alongside shadowy lever-puller the Great Benito, are the owner-operators of a dream restaurant that asks guests from Dan Aykroyd to Louis Theroux to name their dream starter, main, side dish, drink and dessert, in that order.
If you’ve yet to have the pleasure, do get involved with this pick of the finest Off Menu episodes from the 200 (!) so far. They’ve been expecting you for some time…

Taskmaster is chaotic enough as it is – that’s why we love it so much – so can you imagine the kinds of unbroadcastable mayhem that occurs during filming?
Well, you don’t need to imagine, because we’ve rounded up a wild array of anecdotes from former contestants podcast interviews, the Taskmaster book and Little Alex Horne himself about all kinds of secret shenanigans that occurred but didn’t (and mostly couldn’t) make the cut:
Task Attempts Nixed For Legal Reasons
The producers certainly have their hands full trying to prevent the contestants from going overboard, with some attempts at tasks being either illegal or simply unbroadcastable.
Mark Watson also revealed that one unaired task in series 5 – in which contestants had to make five far-fetched predictions come true – was cut because Sally Phillips predicted something “legally compromising.” We’d love to know what that was…

Paul Hollywood branded Gemma Collins’ attempt at a showstopper on The Great Celebrity Bake Off“appalling”.
The Only Way is Essex star was one of the contestants on the Stand Up To Cancer charity edition of Bake Off on Sunday (26 March), where she appeared alongside Jessica Hynes, Tim Key and Aj Odudu.
In the showstopper round, the competitors were asked to recreate the earliest childhood experience they can remember in a choux pastry form, with Collins opting to encapsulate her memory of her mum buying a pair of fluffy mules for her from Woolworths.
Beginning the challenge, the reality star said that she was “putting a lot of effort” into her sculpture, adding: “I’m getting that apron if it kills me.”
After piping “that fluffy mule that changed my life and got me into showbiz”, however, the pastry emerged from the oven flat, while the pistachio and rose ganache was overly wet.

Since the invention of the moving image – an event that happened just a few decades after the death of Charles Dickens – there have been at least 18 prominent adaptations of Great Expectations. That’s Pip upon Pip, Magwitch upon Magwitch, Miss Havisham upon Miss Havisham. Everyone, from Alec Guinness and Joan Hickson to Robert de Niro and Ralph Fiennes, has been sucked into the Dickens industrial complex. And now, for no discernible reason, BBC One viewers are being treated to a new adaptation of the novel, this time scripted by Peaky Blinders supremo Steven Knight.
The show follows the adventures of Pip, a bright young orphan (“an orchid growing wild in the filth of a stable”) who is thrust into the orbit of Miss Havisham (Olivia Colman) and her ward Estella (Chloe Lea/Shalom Brune-Franklin). From there, and via an encounter with a mysterious convict, Pip will fall in love, make his fortune,...

One of Taskmaster’s most recurring jokes is that Alex Horne is the show’s lackey. The affable, awkward assistant is described as “little Alex Horne” by host Greg Davies, even though the hit comedy series was actually his idea. But now he’s breaking out. Horne has his own comedy series called The Horne Section TV Show (Channel 4), about his fictional quest to create his own comedy series called “The Horne Section TV Show”, with his real-life band, who are called… The Horne Section. Still with me? Buckle up; we’re getting meta.
And meta it is: the show opens during a recording of Taskmaster, with Davies – clearly hamming up his tyrannical on-screen persona – berating his co-host to the audience while Alex (Horne playing himself with extra humility) fidgets in the wings. Alex is a man with great ideas, worn down by years of TV bureaucracy and living in Davies’ shadow.

At the beginning of every Taskmaster series, the contestants know that they can only wear one outfit for all the task filming, for continuity purposes. So what would you pick? Stepping into the unknown, with all manner of physical and mental trials and tribulations ahead, the sensible bet would be… well, something sensible.
And yet, series after series, we see contestants don the most ridiculous getup to take them through their Taskmaster journeys, including a dressing gown, a safari suit, and an Evil Knievel helmet. And series 14 is no different: three of the contestants – Munya Chawawa, Fern Brady and Dara O’Briain – are sporting particularly impressive themed jumpsuits.
The question is: does a special outfit give contestants special powers? The edge over the competition, even? Let’s crunch the numbers.
Tim Key: 1980s-style tracksuit and headband over a shirt and tie (Series 1) Series rank: fourth
Okay, so we’re off to a bad start.

This likable whodunnit comedy sees Sam Rockwell and Saoirse Ronan on the trail of high-camp crime in the original production of The Mousetrap
Being threatened, as we are, with an endless string of ropey yet lucrative Agatha Christie movies with Kenneth Branagh phoning in anuzzer rurbeesh turrrn as the Belgian sleuth, this comedy is a relief. It’s a likably silly and relentlessly camp whodunnit spoof from screenwriter Mark Chappell, centred on Agatha Christie’s long-running play The Mousetrap, and an imagined brutal homicide that took place backstage in its London West End theatre in 1953 – when the production was a mere 100 performances old.
A brash Hollywood director played by Adrien Brody, who is planning to bring The Mousetrap to the screen, is found horribly murdered in the costume department. Sam Rockwell and Saiorse Ronan have a droll sort of platonic police chemistry as the investigating officers: Inspector Stoppard (a nod...

Agatha Christie, master of deduction, was wrong only once. When her play “The Mousetrap” opened in London in 1952, she reckoned it would last eight months. 70 years later, the unkillable production lives on — even Covid only clipped it for 14 months — and yet, the actual plot of the longest-running show in theater history makes most people draw a blank. This is due to two clauses in Christie’s contract: First, every night, the actors order the audience to keep the story secret, and second, every movie producer who wants to turn the play into a film is told they must wait until the end of its run, which at this point may be never.
Yet, debut director Tom George (of the BBC sitcom “This Country”) and screenwriter Mark Chappell have cleverly cracked the code. “See How They Run,” a snappy comedy that struts in with an eyebrow coyly arched, stages its own...

“Knives Out 2” isn’t the only murder mystery hitting theaters later this year, as Searchlight Pictures has released the first trailer for “See How They Run” that finds Oscar winner Sam Rockwell and Oscar nominee Saoirse Ronan investigating a suspicious murder in 1950s London.
Written by Mark Chappell (“Flaked”) and directed by Tom George (“This Country”), “See How Thy Run” takes place in the West End where plans for a movie version of a smash-hit play come to an abrupt halt after the film’s Hollywood director (played by Adrien Brody) is murdered.
A weary inspector (Rockwell) and an eager rookie constable (Ronan) take on the case, and quickly find themselves thrown into a puzzling whodunit within the glamorously sordid theater underground.

You never know a person until you’ve walked a mile in their shoes, and you never know a comedian until you’ve watched them walk through a doorway in the longest shoes, hastily fashioned out of drainpipes they found in the Taskmaster shed, and then argued about with Greg Davies for points. Taskmaster is a window into the souls of our nation’s clowns, and here’s whose souls we’ll be nosying into for series 14: Dara Ó Briain, Fern Brady, John Kearns, Munya Chawawa and Sarah Millican!

Tim Key’s name may not be that widely known in the United States, but in his home country of England, he has made quite the name for himself. With more than 15 years of experience in the entertainment industry, Tim has shown that he can do a little bit of everything. However, what he’s best known for is his work in comedy. In a sign that international TV drama is slowly starting to return to production, cameras have started rolling this week on BBC drama “Death in Paradise” on the French Caribbean island of Guadeloupe.
The Red Planet Pictures produced detective drama, which is shooting its 10th anniversary series, is one of the first British single camera dramas to start filming since lockdown in March.
Variety spoke via Zoom with Red Planet joint managing director Alex Jones and “Death In Paradise” executive producer Tim Key earlier this week, just as some of the key cast and crew were flying in to Guadeloupe for the shoot.
Speaking from a beach-front hotel that is one of the bases for production, Jones and Key outlined the Covid-19 safety measures that Red Planet has put in place for “Death in Paradise,” including social distancing, face coverings and temperature and Covid-19 testing to minimize the risk of infection.

Adapted from the award-winning graphic novel by Joff Winterhart, Days of the Bagnold Summer is described as "a tender, funny coming-of-age story featuring original songs by the indie band Belle & Sebastian." Netflix’s new film “Love Wedding Repeat” is exactly the kind of entertainment the world could use right now.
“We wanted it to be this really light, fun romantic comedy,” star Olivia Munn says on this week’s episode of the Variety and iHeart podcast “The Big Ticket.”
The wedding ensemble (available now on Netflix), directed by Dean Craig, stars Sam Claflin as the brother of the bride (Eleanor Tomlinson) who is hoping to rekindle a romance with one of his sister’s friends, played by Munn. But things take a disastrous turn when a childhood friend (Jack Farthing) shows up coked out of his mind and determined to profess his love for the wife-to-be. Rounding out the cast are Freida Pinto, Joel Fry, Tim Key, Allan Mustafa and Aisling Bea.
In a twist, the film also imagines what would happen under different circumstances. “It’s like if everybody sat at a table,...

It’s not a bad idea in these dark days to provide sheltering audiences with a light-hearted romp. What a shame then that the soufflé writer-director Dean Craig labors to construct in Love Wedding Repeat sinks early on and never recovers. Instead of a fresh take on Four Weddings and a Funeral, . Remember Hugh Grant, hair-tousled just so, in his star-making role as an Englishman who falls for an American beauty (a radiant Andie MacDowell) at one wedding and meets her fiancé at a second? In a romantic comedy, any good-looking British actor can probably coast along on his charm and accent and manners. But to do what Hugh Grant did in the ’90s — to make you believe that for all his cultivation and civilized sex appeal, he lives inside a spectacular thicket of self-doubt that’s even more enchanting than pure confidence…well, that takes a true actor, and maybe a star. And that’s the quality Sam Claflin has in the minor but captivating “Love Wedding Repeat.” He plays Jack, who spends his sister’s wedding trying to put out a dozen fires at once. To say that the character is working overtime to hold himself together would be an understatement. He’s exquisitely flummoxed.
At the outset we hear a narrator, who sounds like the ribald version of a “Masterpiece Theatre” host, as she offers up cynical bites of wisdom like “One bit of bad luck,...

Look, it’s right there in the title: love, wedding, repeat. At first blush, director Dean Craig seems primed to bring a rom-com twist to the sub-genre of timeline-bending adventures that easily slot inside all sorts of different narratives — from “Groundhog Day” to “Edge of Tomorrow” to this year’s “Palm Springs.” But “Love Wedding Repeat” spends far too long getting there, instead opting to dig into a cute enough comedy without any timeline weirdness for more than half its running time. By the time it inches into its second hour without so much of a hint of anyone reliving the same day over and over again,
Based on the 2012 French comedy “Plan de Table,” Craig’s film eventually does kick into timeline tricks, utilizing them in such flimsy fashion that the conceit never gets a chance to blossom or charm. Too bad, because it’s a clever idea, and...

"Life all comes down to chance." Netflix has debuted an official trailer for an "innovative romantic comedy" titled Love Wedding Repeat, which is a fun play on the Edge of Tomorrow subtitle: Live Die Repeat. The film is a remake of the 2012 French film Plan de Table, from the writer of Death at a Funeral. This is a spoiler-free series two review (contains season one spoilers) based on the first four episodes.
Inside the pages of Charles Forsman’s The End Of The F***ing World comics, outsiders James and Alyssa will be forever where they were left – James shot by the police and Alyssa carving his name into her arm with a pin. Frozen between the gutters of Forsman’s drawings, they’ll never grow older than 17, never get jobs or go to university or get married. They won’t have to learn about responsibility or face the consequences of their bloody road-trip.
Lucky them.
TV Alyssa can’t say the same. In season two, which is now streaming on Netflix, she’s been broken out of the frame and much to her dismay,...
