Years & Years has officially been disbanded as Olly Alexander steps away from being the synth-pop project’s sole remaining member. It speaks to the turmoil of this year’s Eurovision Song Contest that in the days after its end, the winner seems to be an afterthought and instead, the focus remains on the divisive nature of the competition.
Nonbinary singer Nemo won with their track “The Code,” totting up an enormous 591 points from a combination of juries in each participating country and the worldwide public. Croatia placed second with 547 points at the event in Malmö, Sweden, after thrilling viewers with an upbeat hit. Ukraine came in third with 453 points. Rounding out the top five were France (445 points) and Israel (375 points).
But it was a Eurovision that organizers might be in a hurry to forget. Reports of unrest among the contestants and country delegations ran amok on social media. Rumors of entrants missing rehearsals, flags being pulled down and claims of misconduct backstage hugely disrupted the usually peppy Eurovision build-up. The...

Swiss performer Nemo has won the 68th Eurovision Song Contest, beating Croatian artist Baby Lasagna, who finished second, in what was perhaps the most divisive competition in its history.
The nonbinary singer, representing Switzerland, won with their track “The Code” collecting 591 points from a combination of music industry juries in each participating country and the global public. Switzerland has won the Eurovision Song Contest.
Swiss entry Nemo stormed the contest with the song “The Code,” walking away with 591 points — a combination of a jury vote and public vote.
But during Nemo’s victory performance at the end of the four-hour show the singer accidentally dropped the microphone-shaped glass trophy, injuring their thumb in the process.
“I didn’t just break ‘The Code’ I also broke the trophy,” said Nemo during the press conference after the show, where their hand was wrapped in a bandage. “I broke my thumb as well. But I got a new [trophy] so I technically have two now.”
The non-binary singer — who is the first Swiss Eurovision winner since Celine Dion won in 1988 — was presented with the trophy by last year’s winner, Swedish singer Loreen.

Eden Golan, Israel’s entrant for the 2024 Eurovision Song Contest, was booed during rehearsals Thursday, with the crowd in Malmö, Sweden, chanting “Free Palestine” during the singer’s performance.
Ahead of the Eurovision semifinal, Golan was performing her song “Hurricane” when sections of the crowd turned on her and the jeering began. In video clips posted to social media, audible boos can be heard during Golan’s rehearsal, with local media reporting that there were also political chants.

Israel participated in the Eurovision Song Contest on Thursday evening, as thousands of pro-Palestinian demonstrators gathered in the host city of Malmo, Sweden, to protest against the country’s participation in the competition.
The Israeli entry Eden Golan was booed during a rehearsal of her song Hurricane on Wednesday, but she was greeted with cheers – if not quite as euphoric as for some other acts – during Thursday evening’s semi-final, and was voted through to Saturday’s Grand Final.
The Jerusalem Post reports that, prior to the second semi-final, Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu wished Golan good luck in a video.
In his statement, Netanyahu said, “Eden, I want to wish you success, but you have already succeeded. You not only face Eurovision n a proud and impressive way, but you successfully face a wave of anti-semitism while standing and representing the State of Israel with respect.”

The world’s largest live music contest is back. The Eurovision Song Contest, a springboard to fame for some of the biggest acts in the world – legendary Swedish band Abba, or more recently, Italian glam rock band Måneskin, for example – will return to screens on Saturday, May 11, to do what it does best: providing the most eccentric performances Europe has to offer.
From perfectly garish outfits and heartfelt ballads to synchronized dance numbers and heavy metal guitar solos, the event is set to feature the wackiest of the continent’s music scene as thousands of fans flock to the Malmö Arena.
Sweden became host after its homegrown star Loreen triumphed last year in Liverpool, England.

Sweden is on high alert and security is being tightened in its third largest city Malmo, ahead of next week’s Eurovision Song Contest.
100,000 extra visitors expected to the city over the week of festivities. BBC News quotes Malmo police chief Petra Stenkula, who said the whole country was already “on a terror level of four out of five.”
The website reports that Malmo will see one of the country’s biggest ever policing efforts, with extra personnel drafted in from across Sweden, as well as neighbouring Denmark and Norway. Swedish police are normally armed. And it cites a Swedish internal police report which described the country as “a priority target for violent jihadist groups,” and cited risks of unrest, cyber attacks and broadcast disruption.
Large demonstrations are scheduled outside the venue, to be attended by those slamming Israel’s participation this year, in context of the nation’s actions in Gaza.

Pop star Olly Alexander responded Friday to an open letter from Queers for Palestine, signed by more than 450 artists urging him to boycott the event taking place in Sweden in May.
Alexander said in a lengthy post on X (formerly Twitter) why he thought it was right for him and other artists to remain in the Contest:
“As a participant I’ve taken a lot of time to deliberate over what to do and the options available to me. It is my current belief that removing myself from the contest wouldn’t bring us any closer to our shared goal.”
He added that he had discussed the dilemma with entries from other nations, and they had come to the same conclusion.

Olly Alexander is responding to calls for him to boycott the 2024 Eurovision Song Contest, but he says he will not be withdrawing from the competition.
The 33-year-old singer will be representing the UK in the upcoming world competition and Queers for Palestine is calling for a boycott as Israel will be competing.
A group of queer artists, including Joel Kim Booster and Indya Moore, signed a letter that said, “We ask you to heed the Palestinian call to withdraw from Eurovision… There can be no party with a state committing apartheid and genocide. At a time when accountability is so urgently needed, Israel’s inclusion in Eurovision would enable and cover up its war crimes and crimes against humanity.”

Israel’s Eurovision team have struggled to create a non-political song against the background of strong international feeling over the ongoing Israel-Gaza conflict.
The Israeli entry for this year’s contest came under intense scrutiny when the lyrics of its original offering October Rain were analysed, and considered too political for the rules set by the determinedly apolitical Contest’s organisers.
Now performer Eden Golan has adapted the song with new lyrics and new title, Hurricane, but The Times of London reports that her team has been challenged in finding the middle way between adhering to Contest rules and keeping the Israeli public happy.
They quote one anonymous team insider saying: “We’ve tried our best to bring a neutral song. We have pressure from the [Israeli] public to write something that speaks the truth. But the world and the Ebu want us not to speak up.”

The BBC has come under pressure to fire the UK’s Eurovision Song Contest entrant Olly Alexander after the Years & Years frontman signed a letter describing Israel as an “apartheid” state.
Alexander, who starred in 2021 hit series It’s a Sin, put his name to a letter from Lgbtqi+ action group Voices4 London on October 20, nearly two weeks after the Hamas attack on Israel sparked a conflict in Gaza.

Olly Alexander, pop star and Bafta-nominated actor in Russell T. Davies drama It’s a Sin, will represent the UK in the next Eurovision Song Contest.
The news was revealed during the final of BBC1 dance competition show Strictly Come Dancing last night. “I love Eurovision so much, it’s a dream come true,” said Claudia Winkleman.
The decision breaks with the usual process in the UK, with the BBC usually veiling its Eurovision plans in the new year. Last year’s British entrant, Mae Muller was second to last as Sweden won through Eurovision icon Loreen won.
The Swedish city of Malmö will host the 68th edition of the global singing contest, which airs across Europe on public broadcasters and around the world.

Long running BBC documentary series imagine dedicates an episode to writer Russell T Davies, and we now have a confirmed airdate.
There is no denying that Doctor Who fans have a lot to thank Russell T Davies for, not least resurrecting the show in such spectacular fashion in 2005. Even to that point though, Davies’ body of work was already worthy of conversation and appreciation. Now that body of work is to go under the microscope too.
That’s because Russell T Davies – who has re-taken on the role of Doctor Who boss of course – is to be the subject of an episode of documentary series imagine.

There’s probably a clever German word invented to describe the increasingly common and frustrating act of spending an entire evening indecisively flicking through Netflix arguing about what to watch before just giving up and going to bed. The streaming giant has over 7,000 titles on its UK version alone, so you can be forgiven for feeling a bit overwhelmed by it all, and its recent tendency to cancel beloved Netflix Originals – some would say too soon – can leave you wondering where best to commit your time.

At the height of his fame, George Michael had two options – both bad. If the pop superstar had told the world he was gay in the 1980s, his screaming, adoring, grabby female fans might have been afraid to touch him. Misinformation about Aids had begun to seep into society. Coming out, though, would have at least meant that he was free. If the Wham! singer hid his sexuality, he’d be the subject of relentless rumour and press intrusion and, when it finally became impossible to conceal it any longer, he’d be faced with accusations of hypocrisy for living a double life, for decades, in the public eye. The path he took, in the end, was the latter, but it all imploded in 1998 when he was arrested in a Los Angeles public toilet for “lewd conduct” (he was cruising for sex with men). That incident, and the media frenzy that ensued,...

Netflix is back with a new bag of holiday offerings to distract you from cooking and wrapping presents, and we’ve got the run-down of the best and worst, although this is an exceptionally good batch of Christmas movies. With that in mind, we’ve done our best to help you find what best suits your holiday vibe, so you know what to curl up with at the end of a long day spent trying to remember how to socialize after three winters’ worth of partying on Zoom.
The below list is ranked from what is, in our opinion, the best holiday treats Netflix is offering to the worst.

I have to admit that I was thoroughly disappointed with the ‘squirrel games’ acting channel on last week’s episode and to be honest it was not down to the queen’s performances themselves. While the queens did seem to struggle during the rehearsal process, their individual performances were mostly entertaining but the biggest problem I had with the challenges was the script itself. I don’t know who writes these challenges but the entire sketch was crammed full of random pop culture moments that did not really make sense in the overall narrative. We saw characters inspired by Bear Grylls, Kim Woodburn and Ashley and Pudsey from Britain’s Got Talent in a Big Brother-style competition run by a killer squirrel that hosted murderous Squid Games-style challenges. On top of this, there was also dialogue that paid homage to viral videos, Drag Race references and many other pop culture phenomena.

Sarah Harding had hoped to be able to attend her Gala dinner before she died, Girls Aloud bandmate Cheryl Tweedy has revealed.
Harding died of breast cancer in September last year at the age of 39, but revealed her final wish while staying with Tweedy weeks before her death. She was apparently keen to be able to thank those who had helped her during her illness.
"I asked her over and over again how we could help. Was there anything she truly wanted or needed?” wrote Tweedy in an article for Vogue.
“Finally she said to me: ‘I would love you to create an evening, a gala of some kind for me. If I am here and can attend I will be able to thank those who have helped me through all of this, and pay that forward in a way that will help others when I’m gone.’”
