New generation fans of Tom Cruise were shocked to learn that he was part of many of the fighter jet stunts in his 2022 film, Top Gun: Maverick. However, little do they know about the challenges he had to face inside real jets during the filming of the first film, Top Gun, which was released in 1986. During the training sessions, Cruise was paired with Lieutenant Commander Lloyd ‘Bozo’ Abel, who was a badass fighter jet pilot in the U.S. Navy.

I’m not embarrassed to admit that I consume all kinds of rom-coms: the good, the not-so-good, the somewhere-in-between. (I draw the line at anything that stars Ashton Kutcher. Hollywood: Please put Pedro Pascal on your rom-com leading-man shortlists. Many thanks in advance.) Anyway, I’ve sensed a shift of late. A change in the vibe. A subtle, faintly nostalgic perfume in the air: It’s not overpowering, like the glossy rom-com-a-minute marketplace of the 1990s and early aughts, but still bright and warm and mood-boosting. The box office success of Anyone but You ($218 million globally) and streaming hit Irish Wish (currently top 5 in Nielsen’s movie chart), the fresh deals being made, the rom-coms rolling out this year with big names attached — all this activity reflects audience enthusiasm for polished, character-driven entertainment with jokes, heart and wish fulfillment.

Several years into Hollywood giants’ streaming pushes, they still find themselves confronted with that famous Jerry Maguire line from Wall Street: “Show me the money!” In the case of streaming, “the money” means profits.
With Netflix having been crowned by some observers as the king of streaming, Hollywood CEOs have focused on making their streaming business units profitable after an initial focus on subscriber growth.
The full year of 2023 provided some positives for sector watchers. One entertainment titan ended up eking out a small profit for its streaming unit, while two others narrowed their losses in their divisions with their core streaming businesses, with one of those promising to start turning black ink this year. And another sector biggie made clear that 2023 marked its year of peak losses in streaming.
But Hollywood conglomerates’ streaming results still make for a sharp contrast with Netflix’s continued growth in its annual bottom line.

You can’t teach someone to be an artist; as Steven Soderbergh once noted, if you could “we’d all be Stanley Kubrick.” Yet you can teach the craft necessary for artists to express themselves, and in the case of many of the books that follow, you can provide the inspiration necessary to unlock an artist’s best and most exciting ideas. Here are 13 must-read volumes for any aspiring director, books that examine the job from a variety of technical, artistic, and logistical angles. Some are more nuts-and-bolts manuals on how to use the camera, others — the ones written by working directors like Bethany Rooney, Mary Lou Belli, and Ken Kwapis — survival guides for anyone who wants to sustain a career in the industry. Taken together, they provide a comprehensive look at what it takes to direct and arm filmmakers with the tools they need to succeed.

The 96th Academy Awards are over and have left us with the Oscar winners for this year’s award season. Undoubtedly, all eyes were on Oppenheimer as the film was expected to win big at the ceremony, which it did. However, what would have happened if Oppenheimer ended up losing to some other film in the Best Picture category? Well, it goes without saying that if this happened, it would’ve caused a major upset among fans of the film industry since Christopher Nolan’s masterpiece was a fan favorite nominee.
Saving Private Ryan (1998)
Things like this have happened before. Viewers have been enraged by the fact that other films ended up taking the Best Picture award home rather than the film they believed was more deserving. For example, in 1999 Steven Spielberg’s Saving Private Ryan was defeated by Shakespeare in Love. Thanks to this, the audience’s disappointment was off the charts.

While the past two decades saw Tom Cruise transforming into a full-fledged action star, who pulls off his own stunts irrespective of the risk, there is more to his career than these big-budget action flicks. Even though the impact of the Mi franchise can’t be denied as it remains a staple in the realm of action filmmaking, prior to it, Cruise’s filmography was mostly dictated by dramas led by auteurs.
During the mid-80s and the ’90s, the Tropic Thunder star would continue to display his acting chops in critically acclaimed dramas, which paved the way for his dominance in Hollywood,

A bunch of horror LARPers meet grisly ends in the micro-budget summer camp slasher, Camp Pleasant Lake. Boasting a small selection of familiar faces from genre cinema and a mystifying lead performance from Jerry Maguire’s Jonathan Lipnicki, who hams it up like a Christmas dinner, Camp Pleasant Lake is a decidedly low brow feature, though not without its bright spots. Michael Paré and Maritza Brikisak are Rick & Darlene Rutherford, the new owners of the cursed camp at Echo Lake. Twenty years ago, the camp was the site of a heinous double murder and the disappearance of Jasper and Echo Meadows. Today the Rutherfords have decided to turn the place into a kind of tragedy fantasy camp, with attendees paying big bucks to relive the...

The last American movie star. The savior of cinema. Maverick. There are plenty of superlatives thrown around Tom Cruise these days—including by us—and for good reason. In an era where audiences increasingly only venture to the theater for familiar intellectual property (if at all), Tom Cruise remains one of the last old school marquee names people turn out for in order to watch the actor.
And more often than not, they’re justified in that trust, because Cruise has spent his middle-age proving that like his most popular alter-ego—Navy pilot Pete Mitchell—he has no intention of turning in his wings. It’s a common observation to even note that the Mission: Impossible movies Cruise made in his 50s were better than the ones he made in his 30s, and his dedication to in-camera stunts in those films, as well as Top Gun: Maverick, have increasingly resembled...

Just last month, Tom Cruise entered a partnership with Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group chiefs Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy to develop and produce original and franchise theatrical films, but what kind of movies does Cruise really want to make? By risking life and limb with real stunts in movies such as Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning and Top Gun: Maverick, Tom Cruise has become the biggest action star on the planet. While the actor will doubtlessly continue in the action realm, a report from Variety states that Cruise would like to return to the early days when he worked on serious, dramatic movies with directors such as Martin Scorsese, Stanley Kubrick, and Paul Thomas Anderson.
In the early days of his stardom, Cruise was a bonafide awards contender, scoring Best Actor nominations at the Academy Awards for Born on the Fourth of July and Jerry Maguire, but it...

The picture, which stars 90s screen icon Jonathan Lipnicki alongside a bevvy of genre film icons, is a loving throwback to the thrilling, violent summer camp slasher films of the 1980s.

When we surveyed our readers about Vin Diesel's best role in 2023, the results were rather illuminating. The actor's "Fast & Furious" counterpart, Dominic Toretto, came in shockingly low, lagging well behind The Iron Giant and Groot. That's right, a giant robot with a limited vocabulary and a sentient tree that only repeats the same sentence over and over were considered better roles for him than the Fast Fam's supposedly beloved patriarch. The number one spot went to Riddick B. Riddick, a morally flexible antihero who would just as soon leave his pals for dead than stick his neck out for them.
Why do these characters fit Diesel so well? Well, if I may be so bold, I would say it's because they all have one thing in common: They don't require him to be remotely sexy.
Now, it's worth clarifying that when I say Diesel isn't "sexy," I'm in no way trashing his appearance.

When Cameron Crowe began work on Jerry Maguire, he’d scored only modest success as a director with Say Anything and Singles, but he was still best known as the writer of Fast Times at Ridgemont High. So, when Tom Cruise was approached for the lead role in the film, there were no indications that Jerry Maguire would be a blockbuster. Updated, with additional reaction: Liz Cheney’s new book is a scathing portrait of Republican “enablers and collaborators” who are responsible for the continued hold that Donald Trump has on the party, CNN reported on Tuesday.
With Cheney’s Oath and Honor set to be published next week, CNN Jamie Gangel obtained an advance copy and described it as an “unflinching” look at her former GOP colleagues. Cheney was ousted from Republican leadership as she continued to criticize Trump in the aftermath of the January 6th attack on the Capitol.
“You get personal conversations, Republican meetings,” Gangel said on Jake Tapper’s The Lead, adding that Cheney recounts being on a Trump surrogates call on Jan. 4, 2021 in which she hears “the stark specific planning” for January 6th.

Although she’d had a few smaller roles, Renée Zellweger hadn’t had a starring role in a hit movie yet when she arrived on the set of Jerry Maguire in 1996. Of course, the actor she’d be starring with in Jerry Maguire, Tom Cruise, had a few hits to his credit by then. So here they were — the relative newbie Zellweger meeting the established star Cruise — and Zellweger told us at the time of the release, she’ll never forget that first encounter on the set, especially how kind Cruise was to her. Brendan Fraser is ready to continue his revival, landing his first leading role after winning the Academy Award for The Whale. Fraser will star in Hikari’s Rental Family, which comes from a script co-written by Hikari and Stephen Blahut.
As per Deadline, Rental Family “follows a down and out actor living in Tokyo, who is hired as a token American guy for a Japanese rental family company, leading him on an unexpected journey of self-discovery through the roles he plays in other people’s lives.” Filming will begin in spring 2024 in Japan. No other cast has been announced outside of Brendan Fraser at this time.
So far, Brendan Fraser has avoided the post-Oscar slump that the likes of Cuba Gooding Jr. (Jerry Maguire), Adrian Brody (The Pianist) and so many others have suffered. In fact, his first picture after his Best Actor win was for Martin Scorsese in Killers of the Flower Moon.

You Hurt My Feelings. At a Friday-night showing of Nicole Holofcener’s latest film You Hurt My Feelings (2023), I noticed several people who had come with their moms. Holofcener makes great films to watch with your mom, if her definition of a great film is something that will make her laugh but won't treat her like an idiot. Holofcener’s stories are smart, funny and heartwarming, a little bit sad in the right places, sophisticated but palatable. Invariably, a great actress plays the lead—Catherine Keener, for the most part, though Julia Louis-Dreyfus stars both in Enough Said (2013) and You Hurt My Feelings. In the film, Beth (Louis-Dreyfus), a writer, overhears Don (Tobias Menzies) telling her brother-in-law that he doesn't like her latest novel. It hurts her feelings. She dry retches on the sidewalk, sobs to her sister, and swears she will never look at her husband the same way again.

HBO confirmed that it canceled Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty after two seasons. The news was a surprise, coming only moments after the network aired its second-season finale on Sept. 17. Hecht is the co-creator of the series with Max Borenstein.
My wife burst into tears.
I didn’t have that on my “Winning Time Cancellation” bingo card. I mean, I knew, following nearly a decade of doubts and fears and highs and lows, my HBO series was coming to a jarring conclusion. But then my phone lit up with condolence texts. My mom left a teary voice message. My dad’s email included a link to an article announcing the cancellation, “In case you haven’t heard …” What if I hadn’t? And I had to explain to my step-kids what the word “canceled” means in the TV universe (“No, we don’t have to move”).

Hey, as the Summer movie season races (hint) to that Labor Day finish line (again), the studios aren’t quite done with toy-based stories. In that aspect, a new box office champ has been crowned with the “pink princess” zooming past those video game plumbing icons. Now, this new release leans into the latter’s territory as its roots are in the gaming world. Oh, and like the “under the radar” Tetris flick, it is actually based on a true story, This isn’t a twist on the old “Cold War Cloak and Daggar” thriller like that one or even an “origin story” of the game’s creation. Instead, this is closer to an old-fashioned, grit and glory, sports underdog fable, Yes sports, as we follow one determined young man whose dreams become reality when he enters the world of Gran Turismo.

Tom Cruise has seemingly done it all over the course of his long and successful film career. The only thing Cruise hasn’t done so far is win an Oscar. But doing so might not be seen as much of an accomplishment for the respected actor.
Tom Cruise has never been interested in winning awards Tom Cruise | Mike Coppola/WireImage)
Cruise has been far less concerned with bringing home awards than perhaps even his fans. The actor has been nominated for an Academy Award four times in his career. He was a Best Actor contender for films like Born on the Fourth of July and Jerry Maguire. In the year 2000, he was nominated for Best Supporting Actor thanks to his performance in Magnolia.
Most recently, Top Gun: Maverick was also up for a Best Picture award. Still, despite these nominations, Cruise has left the ceremony empty-handed every time. But that...

Tom Cruise and Christopher McQuarrie on the set of Mission: Impossible Dead Reckoning – Part One from Paramount Pictures and Skydance.
On September 6, 2020, the first day of principal photography on Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, Tom Cruise drove a motorbike off a mountain. Specifically, he drove a custom-made Honda Crf 250 off a purpose-built ramp on the side of Norway’s Helsetkopen mountain, a vertiginous rock face sat some 1,200 meters above sea level. Then he plunged 4,000 feet into the ravine below before opening his parachute barely 500 feet from the ground.
When he landed, director, Christopher Mc Quarrie, and the small crew of his Mission co-stars who had assembled to watch the seminal cinematic sequence from the safety of video village, breathed a collective sigh of relief. Then Cruise picked himself up and did it all again another seven times, just to make sure the footage was perfect.

Tom Cruise has many popular movies under his belt, with the famous Jerry Maguire being one of the actor’s highlights. But the film’s director believed another veteran filmmaker tried to take Cruise away from the project, which would’ve been disastrous for the feature.
How Cameron Crowe felt this director tried to sabotage ‘Jerry Maguire’ Tom Cruise | Axelle/Bauer-Griffin/FilmMagic
Jerry Maguire was Cruise’s classic 1996 comedy feature about a sports agent trying to run his own successful business. Director Crowe already recruited a couple of notable actors for the movie like Cuba Gooding Jr. and Renee Zellweger.
But perhaps one of the people he wanted to cast in the film the most wasn’t an actor at all. Crowe tried to persuade veteran filmmaker Billy Wilder to play the role of Dicky Fox. Crowe was a genuine fan of Wilder, and considered the possibility of collaborating with his idol in the comedy.

It’s last call for a number of films and TV shows leaving Netflix in June. Director Frank Darabont’s underrated Stephen King adaptation “The Mist” exits on June 21, while the end of the month brings the exits of “Jerry Maguire,” “Puss in Boots,” “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days,” a pair of “Resident Evil” movies and Brad Pitt’s pretty-ok zombie actioner “World War Z.”
Also departing on June 30 is the first two seasons of “Chappelle’s Show.”
All-in-all, however, it’s not a robust list so rest easy knowing an exodus isn’t coming to Netflix. This month at least.

There's no more indelible image from the first "Mission: Impossible" movie than that of Tom Cruise suspended from a cable just inches above an all-white floor. Yet that image almost didn't make it into the 1996 film as is.
The image comes from the scene where Cruise's protagonist, Ethan Hunt, breaks into the mainframe of the Imf (Impossible Missions Force) in CIA headquarters. Disavowed Imf agent Franz Krieger (Jean Reno) lowers Hunt head-first into the vault to pull off "the Mount Everest of hacks" at a standalone terminal that is not connected to any other computers. All is going well until a rat in the air duct causes Krieger to lose his grip on the cable and almost drop Hunt onto the floor.
As Hunt explains beforehand in the obligatory heist scene setup, the vault is sound-sensitive, its floor is pressure-sensitive, and it "detects any increase in temperature," even body heat,...

Stifler is back on the hunt for women. Deadline is reporting that the American Pie star is set to star in a new romantic comedy from Luke Greenfield titled The Last Bachelor. The rom-com will be brought to us by XYZ Films. Greenfield will also be producing the script he co-wrote with Jason Benoit. It is set to be introduced to buyers at the Cannes market and is billed as a “big romantic comedy in the tone of Judd Apatow and Jerry Maguire.”
The synopsis for The Last Bachelor reads,
“After realizing all his friends have settled down and gotten married, Tommy Kriffman (Seann William Scott) goes from never wanting to get married to becoming obsessed with finding his wife and having a family Asap. But when he falls in love with a stunning, younger woman, Dylan, who – like the old Tommy – isn’t ready to settle down, a hilarious gender reversal begins.

The combination of Ben Affleck and Matt Damon proved to be a winning formula for "Air," and the film's theatrical success proved that moviegoers are still interested in more adult-centric storylines that don't involve people with superpowers (read our review here). Granted, Michael Jordan is about as close to a superhero as you can get in the sports world and his global brand appeal certainly didn't hurt the film's impressive box office. Marking the first project from Affleck and Damon's new production company Artists Equity, "Air" was initially going to be released exclusively on Prime Video before Amazon made a late call to release the film theatrically, a gamble that mostly paid off. So far, "Air" has made just a hair under $80 million globally with a premiere on streaming still on the horizon. That kind of coin should make Amazon even more confident in its decision to make a larger...

It’s time to lace up your kicks: Ben Affleck’s “Air” will be available to stream on Prime Video beginning May 12.
“Air” debuted April 5 on more than 3,500 screens, which marked an unprecedented theatrical release for Amazon, as the studio affirmed its billion-dollar commitment to making movies for the big screen. The film is produced by Amazon Studios, Skydance Sports, Mandalay Pictures, and is the inaugural project from Affleck and Matt Damon’s Artists Equity.
Directed by Affleck, from a script by Alex Convery, “Air” tells the true story of how Nike’s basketball division signed then-nba rookie Michael Jordan into a historic partnership that revolutionized the world of endorsement deals with the creation of the Air Jordan brand.
Damon stars as maverick Nike executive Sonny Vaccaro, who scouted Jordan for the deal, with Affleck as Nike co-founder Phil Knight and Viola Davis portraying Jordan’s mother Deloris (at the...

There are a lot of reasons why “Air,” the sensational new movie starring Matt Damon and directed by Ben Affleck, is being consumed by audiences with eager pleasure. It’s the rare drama for adults these days that people actually want to see in a movie theater (I don’t mean that to sound negative; the film could jump-start a trend). And that’s no random triumph. “Air,” based on the true story of Nike, Michael Jordan and the man who brought them together, is full of juicy inside talk about money and sports and celebrity and what agents and marketing executives actually do. In that way, it has the qualities that defined both “Jerry Maguire” and “Moneyball.”

For most of their 21-year marriage, George Stephanopoulos and Ali Wentworth have operated on separate career tracks. He is an Emmy-winning ABC News host and political commentator and she is the “Jerry Maguire” actress-turned-New York Times best-selling author-turned host of the hit iHeardRadio podcast “Go Ask Ali.” But those boundaries crumbled while they were stuck at home together during the Covid pandemic, with the couple deciding to team up on a shared endeavor: the production company BedBy8.
“Let’s not deny that being empty-nesters kind of played a part,” says Wentworth, who is the mother of two adult daughters with Stephanopoulos. “We thought, ‘Wow, we have so many stories to tell.’ And we can sort of stay in our lanes within the company.”
Founded in 2021 with their partner Alyssa Mastromonaco, BedBy8 focuses on scripted TV projects, limited series and documentaries. Two years in, Stephanopoulos and Wentworth have their first BedBy8 credit under their belt,...

It’ll have been less than a month since the 95th Academy Awards when Ben Affleck’s “Air” hits theaters, but strong reviews suggest the time to begin predicting next year’s Oscars is already here.
Matt Damon heads the ‘80s-set workplace dramedy’s stellar ensemble as Sonny Vaccaro, a maverick talent scout for an apparel company that once celebrated unconventional thinking but, after going public, has increasingly frozen him out, focusing more on balance sheets than upending the status quo. Basketball players, Sonny is told over and over again, would much rather wear Converse and Adidas than Nike. Why doesn’t the company, based in Beaverton, Or, have offices on the east coast? What’s the use in a shoe that’s only good for a single activity? You can wear a running shoe for anything, even a trip to the grocery store. And what the hell is a Nike,...

Pulling double duty as director and supporting actor in Air, Ben Affleck has managed to make a riveting movie out of a mundane story. Everyone knows how this story ends, but the cast and Affleck deliver a pulse-pounding drama with a lot of heart and gusto. Air would make a great double feature with another sports-related film, Jerry Maguire.

The curtain has dropped on another South by Southwest, but this was no ordinary year for the Austin-based tech and media event. Two days after the festival started, “Everything Everywhere All At Once” claimed seven Oscars and gave it the bonafide of having premiered a Best Picture winner (2022’s slate also produced a Best Actress contender in “To Leslie’s” Andrea Riseborough). Now considered an “Oscar launchpad,” SXSW unsurprisingly attracted more than its usual share of attention.

Americans spend tens of billions of dollars on basketball sneakers every year. Sure, everybody needs shoes, but it shouldn’t matter if your choice bears the Nike swoosh, Adidas’ three stripes or the Converse star. So why does it? In most cases, consumers aren’t simply buying footwear; they’re investing in the fantasy of walking in someone else’s shoes, be it a sports star or personal idol, and the promise that switching one’s kicks has a direct impact on your potential for greatness.

My guest this week is the SAG-nominated ‘Hacks’ co-creator, showrunner, director and star, Paul W. Downs.
In the HBO Max comedy series, Downs plays Jimmy, a put-upon agent representing comedienne Deborah Vance (Jean Smart) and her reluctant protégé Ava Daniels (Hannah Einbinder). At the end of last season, Jimmy has a ‘Jerry Maguire moment’ and leaves his agency, while Deborah and Ava decide to part ways. And—drumroll—during this podcast chat, Downs reveals what we can expect next from Hacks‘ cast of characters, plus some “bucket list” guest stars to look forward to.
Downs is SAG-nominated with the show’s ensemble cast, while Smart is SAG-nominated for Best Female Actor in a Comedy Series.

Plus, we also get to hear about what inspires him and fellow co-creator-director-showrunners Lucia Aniello and Jen Statsky, and the...

Not that anyone’s keeping count, but Paul W. Downs may just be doing the most on “Hacks.” The Emmy winner co-created the HBO Max comedy with Lucia Aniello and Jen Statsky, serves as showrunner, executive producer, director and writer, and stars as Jimmy, the harried manager of Deborah (Jean Smart) and Ava (Hannah Einbinder), and straight man to Megan Stalter‘s spacey Kayla. For Downs and Jimmy, their roles give them unique vantage points inside and outside the “Hacks”-verse.
“I think all of us [in the writers’ room] approach it from story first,” Downs tells Gold Derby (watch above). “We know the tentpole moments of where we want the story for Deborah Vance to go, and so we then figure out the arc for each other character, so it’s not like I’m sitting there trying to come up with a set piece for Jimmy to do. But it is helpful...
