The AFL-CIO’s Department for Professional Employees is urging Congress to increase federal funding for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting to $565 million in fiscal year 2022 and the National Endowment for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Humanities to $201 million each – funding levels that were passed by the House of Representatives in July.
“This is a critical moment for helping ensure that creative professionals can get back to work in the wake of the economic devastation caused by the Covid-19 pandemic,” Dpe president Jennifer Dorning said in a letter to the chairs, vice chairs and ranking members of the Senate and House appropriations committees. “The Cares Act and American Rescue Plan helped creative professionals get through the worst of the pandemic and allowed them to start to get back on stage and return to sets, but the reality is that industry employment remains below pre-pandemic levels. HBO has set a fall premiere for Four Hours At The Capitol, a documentary film chronicling the January 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol. The film, which hails from HBO Documentary Films in association with the BBC, will debut Wednesday, October 20 at 9 pm Et/Pt on HBO and available for streaming on HBO Max.
Executive produced by Emmy winner Dan Reed (Leaving Neverland) and directed by Jamie Roberts, Four Days At The Capitol is described as a harrowing and immersive chronicle of the insurrection at the U.S. Capitol, when thousands of American citizens from across the country gathered in Washington D.C. to protest the results of the 2020 presidential election, many with the intent of disrupting the certification of Joe Biden’s presidency.
Through never-before-seen footage and vivid first-hand accounts, the film details how the violence quickly escalated, leaving Capitol security forces outnumbered and overwhelmed, and highlights the high-stakes standoff between police and rioters.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer called for Donald Trump to be removed from office immediately, following the siege of the Capitol that was motivated by the president’s unfounded claims that the election was stolen from him.
“What happened at the U.S. Capitol yesterday was an insurrection against the United States, incited by President Trump,” Schumer said in a statement. “This president must not hold office one day longer. The quickest and most effective way — it can be done today — to remove this president from office would be for the vice president to immediately invoke the 25th amendment. If the vice president and the Cabinet refuse to stand up, Congress must reconvene to impeach President Trump.”
D.C. officials said that the city’s Metropolitan Police made 68 arrests related to the Capitol siege. Officials said that 56 officers of the Metropolitan Police Department suffered injuries, and one remained hospitalized.

In a defeat for the National Rifle Association and a bit of progress for people who prefer not to be shot to death, Congress is poised to approve the first funding for research into gun violence in more than two decades.
On Tuesday, the House passed $25 million in funding for the Centers for Disease Control and the National Institutes of Health to investigate gun violence as a public health crisis. The measure, tucked into a massive bipartisan spending agreement the Senate is expected to pass before the end of the week,...

The latest cartoonishly evil headline to come out of the Trump administration involves Education Secretary Betsy DeVos’ plan to cut funding for the Special Olympics. Is this actually true? Yes, and on Tuesday, lawmakers grilled DeVos over a budget proposal that includes over $7 billion in cuts to education programs, including several for those with special needs. The proposal eliminates all $18 million in federal funding for the Special Olympics, which is roughly a tenth of its total budget.

Another State of the Union address down, and your Uncle Joe has proven it once again: Vice President Biden is God’s gift to live TV screen-grabbers.
A few minutes into President Obama’s speech, I decided it wasn’t even worth fighting anymore: Just by virtue of this congenial wonder of the world candidly being himself, everything Joe Biden did was fascinating.
He winks! (Hard to see here, so much like this post this shot is very nearly pointless.)
Joe Biden thoughtfully files something away… (or maybe it’s a prop!)
Joe Biden either checks his phone or sleeps — either way,...
