The rise of Gollum: His first kill
On the birthday of hobbit Sméagol, he and his cousin Déagol went fishing when the latter found the One Ring underwater. Each wanting the gold for themselves, the hobbits fight until Sméagol chokes Déagol to death, claiming the Ring as “my precious.”
Here, we saw how the Ring, having a will of its own, seemingly calls Sméagol and immediately corrupts him, trapping him as Gollum in a deformed body and mind.

10. Jake Sully from Avatar (2009)
James Cameron has always been one of the most celebrated directors, and the Avatar movies are among his greatest feats. Cameron managed to create visually stunning sensations that earned billions — but none of that can be attributed to Jake Sully, Avatar’s main character whose name and motives no one even remembers.
9. Sam Witwicky from Transformers (2007–2023)
Unlike in the previous case, Transformers’ Sam Witwicky adds a lot to his movie and is far from your generic action hero. But that’s pretty much his main problem: there’s little to nothing we can remember about Sam other than the facts that he was an anxious nerdy teenager who somehow pulled Megan Fox. So… Yeah. Sorry, Sam.
8. Jupiter Jones from Jupiter Ascending (2015)

The question of the creature that fell from the sky, arose after the release of the first promos and trailers for the first season of The Rings of Power.
The sneak peek even showed the meteorite fall scene almost in its entirety: a bright ball of light crossed the entire sky, caught the eyes of all the main characters, and fell in Rhovanion.
There Are Many Hints in The Rings of Power Season 1 that The Stranger is Gandalf
The man was found by two Harfoots, the curious Nori and her more cautious friend Poppy. When the man climbed out of the hole left by the meteorite's fall, several things became clear: he possesses magic, but does not speak any language known to the Harfoots and cannot remember anything, including his name.
The Stranger trusts Nori almost from the first minutes, because she does not act hostile. The girl decides to...

Even after Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 2 arrives, there will be more of Middle Earth to explore, particularly through the lens of Gollum’s perspective. Deadline unpacked where the franchise is heading with longtime collaborators Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens. Warner Bros. has acquired the rights to make more films based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s fantasy work and the world founded on Peter Jackson’s original New Line trilogy of films, with one corresponding to each books.
“The Gollum/Sméagol character has always fascinated me because Gollum reflects the worst of human nature, whilst his Sméagol side is, arguably, quite sympathetic,” Jackson told Deadline. “I think he connects with readers and film audiences alike, because there’s a little bit of both of them in all of us. Exclusive: Since Warner Bros acquired rights to make more Middle-earth films based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s works and the canon established by New Line’s original trilogy, Peter Jackson and his Lord of the Rings cohorts Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens hovered over the proceedings for a long time, as they mulled how to return, and much to involve themselves into another deep dive into Tolkien mythology.
As a business proposition, the allure is easy to understand: the two trilogies – the six Lotr and The Hobbit films — generated nearly $6 billion in worldwide grosses and enough Oscar gold to fill the lair of the dragon Smaug from 2012’s The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.
Go back 23 years, and the road was far more perilous when New Line founder Bob Shaye greenlit three Lotr movies that Jackson shot one after the other in New Zealand. One of the biggest gambles in film history,...

5 Best Villains from The Lord of the Rings - Main Image
What should have been a nice, simple story of good and evil clashing in The Lord of the Rings has been made far more compelling than it has any right to be, thanks to its memorable cast of villains.
This series of films, adapted from the timeless books by J.R.R. Tolkien, serves as a cautionary tale that details the consequences of absolute corruption. Here is how the best villains from The Lord of the Rings poisoned Middle-Earth with their vile intentions.
5. Grima Wormtongue
If there is one word to describe Grima Wormtongue for a first impression, it is deceptive. This Rohirrim served as King Theoden's adviser when Rohan was vulnerable. Saruman's words and influence came through Wormtongue, which weakened the entire Kingdom of Rohan.

"The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power" is returning later this year with even bigger battles in season 2, but before the new season of the Prime Video series takes us back to Middle-earth, you can head back to the fantasy world yourself, courtesy of Lego.
It's hard to believe that it's been over 20 years since Peter Jackson's unbelievable adaptation of "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy hit theaters (which you can celebrate with the extended editions of "Lord of the Rings" returning to theaters in 4K this summer), but here we are, and the fantasy film series is still one of the greatest trilogies of all time. To celebrate, Lego is releasing a massive Lego set that will let fans build the imposing dark tower of Sauron, also known as Barad-Dûr.

When it was announced that Amazon was set to produce The Rings of Power, a prequel to The Lord of the Rings trilogy, fans were ecstatic to revisit J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-Earth. But despite opening to a record 25 million viewership, the highest in the streaming platform’s history, the sentiment surrounding the new addition to the iconic IP was pretty mixed.
Despite winning over fans with its eye-popping visuals, with many deeming it a worthy addition to the iconic franchise, its naysayers accused the show of pushing a woke agenda. And with the trailer for Season 2 set to be unveiled soon, a similar discourse has popped up once again.

The Lord of the Rings franchise is a classic lore of good vs evil which follows heroes who embark on a perilous quest to save the world from darkness. It is all thanks to J.R.R. Tolkien’s creativity that curated a detailed world with diverse mythologies. While the novel series gained quite a bit of attention, it is Peter Jackson who put the stories in the cinematic format to reach wider audiences.

Viggo Mortensen will forever be synonymous with his role in Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy. The actor played the role of Aragorn in all three films and was the sworn protector of Frodo and Sam in their journey from the Shire to Mount Doom. The actor won the SAG Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast In A Motion Picture for The Return of the King.
While the final film in the trilogy made history for being the first fantasy film to win Best Picture at the Oscars, Mortensen seemed to have a less-than-stellar opinion about the movie. He mentioned how the last two films leaned more towards CGI and visual effects as opposed to the practical effects of The Fellowship of the Ring, which seemed to have carried over to Jackson’s The Hobbit trilogy.

Did you see that plot twist coming, Precious? Warner Bros. Discovery recently announced the news that we'll be returning to Middle-earth in a new movie about Gollum, everybody's favorite fish-eating gremlin, tentatively titled "The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum." Despite the usual excitement that follows any developments about such popular material, it's fair to say that the collective reaction to this reveal mostly amounted to: "...Him?" Compared to the likes of the classic "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy and the widely-panned "The Hobbit" movies, the animated "The War of the Rohirrim" film, and even Prime Video's "The Rings of Power" show, a prequel following an awfully brief chapter in the centuries-spanning life of pathetic ol' Sméagol, of all characters, doesn't quite conjure up the same images of epic storytelling and sweeping adventures fans have come to expect from their beloved franchise. It certainly helps that actor...

A 15-year-old “Lord of the Rings” fan film titled “The Hunt for Gollum” is back online and streaming on YouTube after it was temporarily blocked in the aftermath of Warner Bros. revealing its next “Rings” movie has the same title (via Entertainment Weekly). The fan film, which centers on Gandalf tasking Aragorn with hunting down Gollum before the latter can find Frodo and the One Ring, has earned 13 million views since its debut more than a decade ago.
The fan-created “Hunt for Gollum” was unavailable to watch on May 9 after Warner Bros. announced Andy Serkis is starring in and directing “The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum.” Viewers got the following message on the fan film: “This video contains content from Warner Bros. If Warner Bros.’ newly announced The Lord of the Rings movie idea The Hunt for Gollum sounded a bit like fan fiction, that’s because it already is.
There’s a 2009 fan-made film titled The Hunt for Gollum that you can watch below. The film, directed by Chris Bouchard, is rather ambitious. The Hunt for Gollum spans 39 minutes and has received plenty of praise from fans upon its release.
Following WB’s announcement, the film was taken offline for many hours and YouTube put up a notice saying Warner Bros. had filed a copyright claim against the fan movie and blocked it. Lotr fans reacted quite negatively to the takedown online and, early Friday, the film was restored to YouTube.
A studio source says the takedown request was done in error.

While Amazon continues Tolkien’s Middle-Earth adventures with The Rings of Power series, Warner Bros. would run with their own rights to the IP, which would be parallel to the show — not intended to intersect. It was recently announced that Warners is bringing back Peter Jackson, who made his bigger-budget blockbuster career on the Lord of the Rings movies back in the early 2000s. Jackson will produce a film that Andy Serkis will direct, which is a Gollum spin-off, tentatively titled The Hunt for Gollum. A statement from the studio would comment, “We are honored they have agreed be our partners on these two new films. With Andy coming aboard to direct Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum(*Wt), we continue an important commitment to excellence that is a true hallmark of how we all want to venture ahead and further contribute to the Lord of the Rings cinematic history.

Update: "The Hunt for Gollum" is now live again on YouTube. In a statement accompanying the restoration, the filmmakers wrote:

Middle-earth is back in full force, with more stories set in Tolkien's world at the same time than ever before. We have the upcoming "Rings of Power" season 2 (which may give us Tom Bombadil), but also the upcoming animated "War of the Rohirrim" feature giving us the previously untold story in the Legendarium. Now, we can add another title to the list: "The Hunt for Gollum," a new "Lord of the Rings" movie from Warner Bros. that has Andy Serkis directing and Peter Jackson producing.

A new Lord of the Rings spin-off movie has been announced, and it’s getting the old gang back together; the producers/writers of both film trilogies, Peter Jackson, Phillipa Boyens, and Fran Walsh will be producing once more, and directing duties will be taken over from Jackson by Andy Serkis, who played Gollum in both trilogies and who was also second unit director on The Hobbit films. Since then, he has directed three movies so he is well prepared to take on this one.
Serkis will also star in his original role of Smeagol/Gollum, and the film is currently tentatively titled The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum. If that title means what we think it means, it could be a really exciting prospect.

The Lord of the Rings trilogy is one of the most celebrated works of fantasy and has been regarded as one of the greatest films ever. Director Peter Jackson spent years bringing to life a novel series that was considered to be unadaptable. The final film of the trilogy The Return of the King won eleven awards at the Oscars, including Best Picture.
Many actors in the fantasy trilogy have gone on to become stars. Lupita Nyong’o radiated a female boss vibe as she kicked off the press tour for A Quiet Place: Day One in London on Wednesday. She was hard to ignore in her springtime pink suit, but her adorable plus one—a black-and-white feline—instantly captured my attention.

Peter Jackson’s iconic The Lord of the Rings Trilogy is probably one of the greatest trilogy ever made. Starring an ensemble cast of several actors and a thousand extras, Jackson had an ambitious project on his hands.
During the auditioning of the film, MCU star Jake Gyllenhaal also auditioned for the role of a Hobbit in the film. Not putting effort into his acting and not doing a British accent, Peter Jackson had some harsh words for Gyllenhaal back in the day!

We all know who achieved the goal of the Fellowship of the Ring, nevertheless, it’s curious to imagine who could also destroy the most powerful thing in Middle-earth.
9. Boromir
All fans can agree that the prince of Gondor was the weakest one in the Fellowship, doubting its mission from the very beginning at the Council of Elrond, so that he’d be easily overtaken by the Ring’s power and wouldn’t complete the serious mission.
7-8. Merry & Pippin
The two hobbits are similar in this respect, as they both hadn’t got a clue for what they signed up for, having literally no fighting and traveling experience, and being childishly naive and not so serious as other fellow hobbits.
6. Legolas
Calm and experienced elf could be a great contender to carry the Ring, but it’s known that his race is not so immune to the Ring’s lure.

What is the best trilogy of all time? Fans might immediately jump to George Lucas' original "Star Wars" trilogy or maybe Christopher Nolan's more recent Dark Knight trilogy. The more prestige audiences might pull out "The Godfather" trilogy, even if the final chapter doesn't match up to the quality of the first two installments (especially since Francis Ford Coppola revisited them with a superior cut of the final chapter). The indie crowd may put forth Richard Linklater's "Before" trilogy with Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy's evolving love story. But honestly, there's really only one answer that makes sense.
Peter Jackson's "Lord of the Rings" trilogy is the greatest motion picture trilogy of all time. An incredible feat of blockbuster filmmaking and a box office phenomenon, all three movies were shot back-to-back in one of the biggest risks ever taken by a Hollywood studio on a largely untested filmmaker.

Today, The Rolling Stones‘ debut album turned 60. Hats off to Mick Jagger and company for staying together this long against all odds! Here’s a look at their debut album’s triumphs and tragedies.
13. ‘I Just Want to Make Love to You’
The lively rhythm here is ruined by some questionable lyrics. In this song, Jagger compares himself to an enslaved person. It’s tasteless, but what would you expect from the same band that would later give us such racist atrocities as “Brown Sugar” and “Some Girls?” At least this song didn’t hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 like “Brown Sugar” did.
12. ‘You Can Make It If You Try’
Placed near the end of the album, “You Can Make It If You Try” is a self-empowerment song that feels tedious and endless. The Rolling Stones made it. They tried. This song didn’t help them get there.

In the vast realm of cinema and the plethora of content it holds, there have been many times that the production caused a blunder only to be later pointed out by the fans. While there have been many such incidents, some Lord of the Rings fans spotted a car driving around in the background.

Despite the mixed reviews for Road House, the viewers and critics unanimously loved Jake Gyllenhaal’s performance in the bouncer role. It’s no wonder that the actor has such a good portfolio and even his rejected roles speak volumes of his skills. Gyllenhaal was in the running to play Batman in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight trilogy. While the role eventually went to Christian Bale, Gyllenhaal was not bummed out by the rejection.

The Donnie Darko actor’s positive mindset was influenced by the fact that Nolan personally called him to tell him that he did not get the role. Gyllenhaal went on to land roles in critically acclaimed films like Brokeback Mountain and Jarhead, following his Batman rejection.

“The Lord of the Rings” trilogy is undoubtedly one of the greatest pieces of work in the history of cinema. J.R.R Tolkien’s books were considered unadaptable due to their complexity and scale before Peter Jackson stepped in.
Viggo Mortenson || Lord of the Rings: Return of the King
One of the biggest hurdles of any adaptation is finding the perfect cast. Picking the right actors who can do justice to the characters is a task easier said than done. It is safe to say that the trilogy was almost perfect in its choice of actors. However, there were some other seriously talented actors who were also considered for major roles in the series, including that of Aragorn.

“Oppenheimer” took home an impressive seven Academy Awards at Sunday’s Oscars, including the night’s top prize of Best Picture. The Lord of the Rings co-stars Elijah Wood and Sean Astin reunited onstage Saturday at the 2024 SAG Awards. And that’s where Wood learned about a missing trophy.
The two, who played hobbits Frodo and Sam in Peter Jackson’s Lotr movie trilogy, were on stage to present the award for outstanding performance by a female actor in a supporting role. That went to Da’Vine Joy Randolph for her role in The Holdovers.
Before that, Wood and Astin remarked on time’s passing after a clip was played of Astin accepting the Best Film Ensemble win at the 2004 SAG Awards for The Lord Of the Rings: The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King while noting the absence of fellow stars Wood and Viggo Mortensen.
“How’s it been 20 years?” Wood asked Astin, who replied, “It’s been 20 years and yet I’m sorry you couldn’t be there that night.

I feel it in the water. I feel it in the earth. I smell it in the air. Then again, nobody needs to have the foresight of Galadriel to have caught wind of the latest round of rumors and speculation running rampant among "The Lord of the Rings" fans in recent weeks. While the obsessive fandom waits for more movies to arrive down the line, we at least have Prime Video's "The Rings of Power" series to keep us occupied in the meantime. But no matter how far removed we are from a first season that attracted all sorts of discourse in late 2022, from theories about the mysterious Stranger's identity to the guessing game surrounding the reveal of the Dark Lord Sauron, that hasn't stopped many from attempting to read the pipeweed anyway and make their best guess about which major figures from author J.R.R. Tolkien's lore might appear next.

There’s a famed scene in Peter Jackson’s The Fellowship of the Ring that doesn’t appear in J.R.R. Tolkien’s novel. During a quaint moment at the start of their epic journey, Sean Astin’s Samwise Gamgee stops midstride in a grassy field, gripped by a sudden realization. “If I take one more step, it’ll be the farthest away from home I’ve ever been,” he says. And with Frodo’s encouragement, he does, and nothing about their journey is quaint ever again.

When you look back on them, A Quiet Place and A Quiet Place: Part II were all about restraint – intended to pitch viewers into a world of near-total silence, and subsequently dread every single tiny noise for fear of alien annihilation. And they proved highly effective horror-thrillers, anchored in character and brilliantly directed by John Krasinksi. But the first trailer for A Quiet Place: Day One offers a different angle on those ideas – plunging us head-first into a world of total noise and chaos, as the audibly-motivated extra-terrestrial creatures decimate New York City. As you might guess, it looks incredibly intense. Stick your seatbelt on, and watch the trailer here:
Blimey. We previously got a glimpse of ‘Day One’ of the alien attack in Part II, and that was pure carnage even just in a slice of smalltown America. The big city – the biggest city, in fact, the Big Apple...

"Discover why our world went quiet." Paramount Pictures has unveiled the first official trailer for the sci-fi prequel A Quiet Place: Day One, arriving in theaters this June in the middle of the summer. After the first two A Quiet Place movies (from 2018 & 2020), they've decided to go big and make the prequel - setting it in New York City when the alien creatures first arrive and wreak havoc. (There's also a A Quiet Place III sequel in the works). There are no plot details revealed, but this trailer gives us a first look at what's going down. Lupita Nyong'o stars as a woman named Sam in NYC caught up in the mayhem. "As everything quickly goes to hell, she’s thrown together with a man named Eric. With some reluctance, the pair agree to navigate and survive the city together." And yes, she has a cat she brings along, and its name is Frodo.

In “Porcelain War,” a resilient Ukrainian couple divide their time between two seemingly antithetical pursuits: When enterprising Slava Leontyev isn’t training fellow civilian soldiers in the ongoing fight against Russia’s invasion, he and his partner Anya Stasenko are skilled ceramic artists, casting and painting dainty porcelain figurines inspired by local nature and folklore. If the title already suggests something pointed in that disparity, this emotive debut by Leontyev and American co-director Brendan Bellomo leaves nothing to chance in ensuring we get it: Porcelain, we are told, is “fragile but everlasting, and can be restored after hundreds of years.” Lest the point still be lost on us, the couple’s combined voiceover later offers a blunter paraphrase: “Ukraine is like porcelain — easy to break, but impossible to destroy.”
The metaphor is clear enough, then. Whether it’s quite complex enough to sustain a feature-length documentary is another question. “Porcelain War” thrives on contrast,...

Watching Brendan Bellomo and Slava Leontyev’s visually confident, intellectually insecure documentary Porcelain War is like listening to a recitation from a brilliant poet while somebody sitting next to you is whispering what the poems are actually about. And the person sitting next to you explaining what the poet is trying to say is… twist… also the poet!
There’s a great deal of beauty in Porcelain War and there’s a potent artistry behind it, but I’ve never watched a documentary with so many running visual metaphors and so little faith that the audience will be able to grasp them. It’s a bit stunning and a bit insulting all at once. That it often tends more toward the former explains its top award in the U.S. Documentary Competition at this year’s Sundance Film Festival.

Brendan Bellomo and Slava Leontyev’s documentary Porcelain War starts with a text card: “Nearly all the footage you are about to watch was shot by the subjects in this film.” It’s the kind of thing that makes one expect material that’s quite unbelievable. In this case, consider that promise kept. Most of what we see comes from Ukraine in 2022. A fraught time, which continues as I type.
An idyllic opening in a Ukrainian forest around Kharkiv (a city near the Russian border) introduces us to co-director Slava and Anya, artists who make porcelain figures that they drop in real-world settings. The camera, often using locked-off shots, lingers on toys strewn about the floor, or light from the television set illuminating an otherwise darkened room. Characters speak in whispers when they speak at all. The movie is less concerned with plot than with capturing a very specific feeling: The lack of control audiences likely felt when they were young. Its glacial pace and lack of conventional structure turned off some audiences (myself included), but deeply impacted others who were slowly drawn in by the patient filmmaking and...

Tolkien’s high fantasy novels of the same name, these films more than just introduced the iconic realm of Middle-earth to millions of fans around the world; they became legends in their own right. So much so, The Lord of the Rings has become a holiday staple celebrated by millions around the globe.
Indeed, despite being set in a world without the usual Yuletide trappings, this trilogy has quietly become something of a Christmas tradition, and an annual viewing appointment every December. Here’s how the films’ surprise connection with the holiday season began, why they’re so perfectly suited for the festive start of winter, and how The Hobbit trilogy only strengthened the association a decade later.
