Sales and production house Film Constellation is launching world sales rights on U.S. comedy drama “Eephus,” directed by Carson Lund, set to world premiere in the Directors’ Fortnight section in Cannes in May.
In the film, as an imminent construction project looms over a beloved small-town baseball field, a pair of New England Sunday league teams face off for the last time over the course of a day. Tensions flare up and ceremonial laughs are shared as an era of camaraderie and escapism fades into an uncertain future.
“Eephus” is the feature directorial debut of American filmmaker Lund, who also has a cinematography credit on another Directors’ Fortnight title, “Christmas Eve in Miller’s Point.”
“Eephus” is produced by Lund, Tyler Taormina, Michael Basta, David Entin and Gabe Klinger for U.S.-based Omnes Films, in collaboration with executive producers Michael Tonelli, Ashish Shetty, Brian Clark and Jim Christman of Magmys.

Another big award show took place this weekend (in addition to the SAG Awards), the Film Independent Spirit Awards, which celebrates indie film and TV. One thing about this awards show is that their idea of independent sometimes makes me scratch my head a bit, with HBO’s big-budget The Last of Us nominated a whole bunch in the TV category, along with Netflix’s Beef and several other streaming shows, which I’m not sure one could call independent. For films, there’s a $30 million budget cap. For TV, I’m honestly not sure what the benchmark is because Last of Us was notoriously an expensive show to shoot, costing at least $100 million.
Indeed, The Last of Us won some key awards on the TV side, winning Best Supporting Performance (for Nick Offerman) and Best Breakthrough Performance (for Keivonn Montreal Woodard). Over on the film side, American Fiction and...

Ali Wong won the award for best performance in a new scripted series at the 2024 Film Independent Spirit Awards for her role in Netflix’s Beef, which also won the prize for best new scripted series.
While accepting her first-ever Spirit Award, Wong thanked her co-star Steven Yeun, who was also nominated in the gender-neutral category, as well as the series’ creator Lee Sung Jin and executive producer Jake Schreier. “I wouldn’t be here without you. This is the best. It’s been such a wonderful journey with you guys, and I’m so proud that you guys are my friends, too,” she said.
The comedian also took her speech as an opportunity to give a “special shout-out” to the show’s catering company, Mario’s, playfully noting that her colleagues will “be so mad at me for letting out the secret that they’re, like, the best, but…...

Claire Foy and Richard E. Grant are set to lead a new period drama directed by Peter Glanz.
Titled “Savage House,” the eighteenth century black comedy also stars Bel Powley (“A Small Light”) and Jack Farthing (“The Lost Daughter”).
Kila Lord Cassidy (“The Wonder”), Richard McCabe (“Napoleon”), Vicki Pepperdine (“Poor Things”) and Pip Torrens (“The Iron Lady”) round out the cast. The film recently wrapped in the U.K.
“Set against the backdrop of eighteenth century England, a massive pox outbreak, and Jacobite uprising – this is a timely and darkly satirical story of Sir Chauncey Savage (Grant) and Lady Savage (Foy) and their blind pursuit of a better life,” reads the logline. “It is not without a tinge of irony that their family name is the Savages, for this is a Savage House indeed. Filled with duels, decadence, and bloodshed, this is a madcap play on class and power.”

We’ve seen Jacob Tremblay grow up on screen, and while it may seem weird for us seeing him now as an older teenager in films, imagine how it is for him – a lifetime spent on screen. We had the pleasure in speaking to the 17 year old Canadian for his latest film Cold Copy, as we discussed his journey, and how he believes he has changed across the course of his career.
He looks back on his past projects, he talks in great detail about this one and the collaboration process with Bel Powley, while also looking ahead – in a lengthy, open discussion with a young actor with still so many wonderful characters and films to come.

As “Masters of the Air” nears its end, one surviving member of the Air Force’s “Bloody Hundredth” bombing group finds himself standing next to a fireplace, sipping on whiskey, and quoting the German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche. “Whoever fights monsters should take care not to become a monster himself,” he paraphrases for his fellow flyer, as they prepare to leave the war behind and return to their families. “Because if you gaze into the abyss, the abyss gazes right back at you.”
In the moment, the sentiment is sound enough. Both men have experienced war, up close and personal, and both have been shaped by the harrowing combat all around them. It’s only natural to wonder what they’ll be like when they’re home, when they’re grounded, when the bombs are no longer dropping from the sky. Can they go back to their families, their wives, their kids,...

Sunday’s Critics Choice Awards pretty much stuck to the same script as last week’s Golden Globes, with Netflix’s Beef, Hulu’s The Bear and HBO’s Succession emerging as the big TV winners.
Both Beef and The Bear won four trophies apiece, including Best Limited Series and Best Comedy Series, respectively. Succession, meanwhile, snagged three awards, including Best Drama Series.

There’s a strong case to be made that the reporter is an underutilized protagonist in the thriller genre. They do much of the same job as a law enforcement officer, such as interviewing witnesses and suspects and attempting to find a perpetrator, but with perhaps an approach that is less dynamic and glamorous. The job of a reporter and the ethics of journalism are front and center in the new movie “Cold Copy,” helmed by first-time director Roxine Helberg from her own script.

Bel Powley (“The Morning Show”) stars as Mia Scott, a green journalism student struggling to show herself to advantage in a class taught by established news reporter Diane Heger By serendipity, Mia meets Igor Nowak, the son of a writer who died under suspicious circumstances.

"It doesn't matter the bridges that you burn to get there... Do what has to be done." Vertical has unveiled an official trailer for a thriller titled Cold Copy, arriving at the end of January to watch. This one originally premiered at the 2023 Tribeca Film Festival last year, and also at the Deauville American Film Festival. An ambitious journalism student falls under the compelling thrall of an esteemed yet cutthroat news reporter whom she's desperate to impress, even if it means manipulating her latest story... and the very idea of truth itself. This journalism thriller stars Tracee Ellis Ross, Bel Powley, and Jacob Tremblay as the kid she tries to profile, along with James Tupper, Nesta Cooper, Ekaterina Baker, and more. The film's writer / director Roxine Helberg stated: "In making my first feature, I set out to explore the personal cost of the manipulation of truth." This doesn't look so bad,...

“Succession” continued its winning streak for its acclaimed final season, not only dominating in Emmy nominations and Golden Globes wins, but also now the Screen Actors Guild Awards nominations. The HBO series netted five bids for its farewell batch of episodes, helping the network score an overall 13 bids this year, the most of any channel or streamer at the 30th ceremony. Apple TV+ is the runner-up with eight nominations, with Netflix in third place with seven citations.
In addition to those five “Succession” nominations for Drama Ensemble and cast members Brian Cox, Kieran Culkin, Matthew Macfadyen and Sarah Snook, HBO had success with “The Last of Us,” which scored four noms, “Barry” with three and “The Gilded Age” with one. The 2024 SAG Awards nominations were announced on Wednesday, January 10. The 29th annual SAG Awards, honoring the best movie and TV performances for the year 2023, will be handed out during a ceremony in Los Angeles on Sunday, February 24.
Last year, the guild previewed only 12 of the 20 nominees for acting at the Oscars. That was way off its usual rate of success. In 2021, it went 16 for 20. That was up from the 14 of 20 it matched in 2020. In both 2018 and 2019, SAG hit 75% (15 of 20). And in both 2015 and 2017, it did even better going 17 for 20. However, in 2016 SAG previewed only a lucky 13 Academy Awards contenders.
The SAG Awards roster was decided by a randomly selected nominations panel comprising 2,500 members of the merged Screen Actors Guild and American Federation of Television and Radio Artists unions. The winners will be decided by all 121,000 members of SAG-AFTRA.

A list of the 10 best TV performances of the year could be filled exclusively with actors from Succession, Reservation Dogs and Beef, the top three shows shared by both of our Best of 2023 lists. But what fun would that be? You already know that Sarah Snook and Devery Jacobs and Steven Yeun are great. Or you should.
That’s why, when Angie and I set out to do this list, we started with the simple rule: “Nothing from either of our Top 10 lists.” Those performances and those shows have been celebrated amply, and we wanted to cover as many of the year’s standouts as possible.
Oh, and if it seems like most of our favorite performances of the year were from women? You don’t know the half of it. Had we had more time or space, we would have loved to write about Aunjanue Ellis (Justified: City Primeval...

The 2024 Golden Globes nominations were announced on Monday morning (December 11), leaving several projected heavy-hitters for the upcoming Oscars off the slate. The most notable rejections were “The Color Purple,” which missed for Best Film Comedy/Musical and one of the movie’s stars, Taraji P. The movie did manage to squeak out nominations for Fantasia Barrino in Best Film Comedy/Musical Actress and Danielle Brooks for Best Film Supporting Actress.
Other major contenders that won’t compete include Best Film Drama contenders “Saltburn” and “The Iron Claw”, the screenplays for “American Fiction” and “The Holdovers” and the latter’s director, Alexander Payne.

As we close in on the 2024 Golden Globe nominations, we’re predicting that, for the first time in its four-season history, HBO’s “Succession” will dominate on the TV side. Our official odds have the recently concluded drama series reaping a whopping six bids, matching the incredible single-year showings of just two other post-2010 programs: “Big Little Lies” (2018) and “The Crown” (2021).
In a close second (and leading the comedy pack) is Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building” with five expected mentions. We’re anticipating four bids apiece for the laffers “Abbott Elementary,” “The Bear,” and “Ted Lasso” as well as for period drama “The Crown” on its sixth and final outing.
Among telefilms and limited series, we forecast a good morning for “Beef” and “Daisy Jones & the Six,” each of which are poised to compete in three categories. Also tipped to pull off a triple play are continuing...

Exclusive: One of the longest business partnerships in Hollywood is coming to an end. Lisa Kasteler will be retiring from Wolf Kasteler after steering the agency alongside founder Annett Wolf into a PR powerhouse for the past 32 years.
Kasteler will be leaving at the end of the month, winding down a 50-year career in PR, to become Executive Director of the Matthew Perry Foundation. Perry was a client of Kasteler — and the Wolf Kasteler agency — for 28 years until his sudden death Oct. 28 at the age of 54.
Before his passing, Perry had planned to start a foundation to help others overcome drug and alcohol abuse, which he had hoped to be his legacy. His friends and loved ones are now carrying on that legacy with the recently launched Matthew Perry Foundation, which is committed to identifying addiction as a disease, addressing stigmas that prevent individuals from seeking and accessing care, and...
