They say it takes a village to raise a child, so, for their second album, the collaborative Big Red Machine (nominally National guitarist Aaron Dessner and Justin “Bon Iver” Vernon) decided to invite a birthday party’s worth of friends to pitch in for How Long Do You Think It’s Gonna Last?, a slow, mopey album all about childhood and its adult results: depression, anxiety, all that fun stuff.
Though the album is grounded in Dessner’s piano melodies, which blur the line between melancholia and nostalgia, and Vernon’s instantly recognizable keen,...

Since filming began all the way back in 2011, it’s been a revolving door of speculation as to what actors and musical acts will make the cut of Terrence Malick‘s Song to Song. As we’re less than 10 days away from the film hitting theaters, we’re now getting a clearer picture.
Along with Ryan Gosling, Michael Fassbender, Rooney Mara, Natalie Portman, and Cate Blanchett, we confirmed last month that Iggy Pop, Johnny Rotten, Patti Smith, Lykke Li, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Big Freedia, Diplo, Alan Palomo of Neon Indian, Spank Rock, Dana Falconberry, Black Joe Lewis and the Honey Bears, and The Black Lips will all be featured in the film.
Now, Pitchfork — along with premiering a featurette — have more details. Along with the aforementioned acts all appearing in some capacity in the film, Tegan and Sara and Florence Welch will also be seen. Lykke Li has a bigger role than expected,...

As SXSW 2017 inches closer and closer, the marketing team behind Terrence Malick’s forthcoming romance/music drama, Song to Song, is beginning to drum up excitement ahead of the film’s theatrical bow late next month.
And so, on the heels of last week’s first-look trailer, a batch of all-new pics have surfaced online that highlight Malick’s enviable cast: Ryan Gosling, Michael Fassbender, Natalie Portman and The Discovery‘s Rooney Mara. Set in Austin’s thriving music scene, Song to Song divides that starry ensemble into two couples – Mara and Gosling; Fassbender and Portman – before unraveling their respective highs and lows as they reach for fame and fortune. Malick’s edgy new creative venture is said to be “very much ingrained in the zeitgeist,” so that all but rules out a La La Land-esque arc of love, dreams and the often gut-wrenching grey area in between.

Led by Ryan Gosling, Michael Fassbender, Rooney Mara, and Natalie Portman, they are all featured in new images from the film. Ahead of the SXSW premiere in just a few weeks, we’ve also confirmed the precise runtime and musical acts in the film.

There are already too many hyphenates affixed to Jay-z’s already hyphenated name to reasonably list here, but that isn’t stopping the music superstar and NBA franchise co-owner from adding one more: Videogame executive producer. Over the course of this year, Jay-z has been working with 2K Sports on the latest annual iteration of their bestselling NBA series, NBA 2K13, and when the game hits shelves on Oct. 2 (for PS3, Xbox 360, Wii, PC, and PSP), “Executive Produced by Jay Z” will appear prominently on the packaging.

Following in the footsteps of Santigold, Spank Rock and freaky rap duo Die Antwoord, Azealia Banks has been named the new face of T by Alexander Wang. In a new video for the campaign, Banks struts and pouts for the camera as she sings pieces of "Van Vogue," a clubby cut from her 1991 Ep. "Where's my crown," she raps as she tosses her mermaid hair around in vampy swishes. "She exudes a certain rawness that makes her a very unique talent," Wang told Style.com. Once again, it's time for the return of Videodrome, our semi-regular showcase for the best music videos around. Since the form has given the world game-changing helmers in both the blockbuster and arthouse realms, it's always important to keep an eye on promos, and indeed, one could argue that there's more invention to be found in the short form than there is in features. So, without further ado, the five best music videos we've seen in the last few weeks. As ever, any tips and suggestions are more than welcome.

Diplo is currently invading college campuses around the states performing in intimate venues for absolutely free on “Axe One Night Only Tour,” and during first stop of the tour in Madison, Wisconsin, filled MTV News in on Santigold's much anticipated sophomore effort, Master of My Make-Believe.
“I’ve done two songs with her – one's with [German electronic DJ] Boys Noize; it’s like the only rap record on the album. And another one called 'Pirate in the Water' that’s kind of like an 8-bit reggae song,” Diplo told us. “I love that record – it’s about one of our friends that passed away in New York. But her record is real adventurous and it sounds more like an '80s rock record than a club banger, ya know?”

"I think that my first record was heavily influenced by Licensed to Ill and the Beastie Boys and that [first] record is, like, very brash and very sassy and very unapologetic and irreverent. And I love that," she told MTV News about her 2010 debut Animal.

Ever the evolutionist, Kele Okereke (the now former frontman of seminal indie darlings Bloc Party) releases his second effort, and first Ep, with The Hunter. The eagerly awaited (and un-awaited) follow-up to his solo debut The Boxer finds him burrowing further into his electronic leanings, but this time mining for melancholia than club bangers. Likely to bring some fans back and alienate others further.
When in 2010 Kele announced his solo career, and its dance direction, it could hardly be called unexpected. Having single-handedly directed one of the guitar driven indie bands of the ‘00s down a path of sequencers, samples and synths with singles Flux and Mercury; bringing it to fruition with third effort Intimacy.
After the initial receptive bursts of excitement and outrage died down, the realization of Kele’s dream direction for his band in Intimacy was met with a mediocre reception and lacklustre appreciation from fans and critics alike.

Spank Rock's forthcoming new album will be called "Everything Is Boring & Everyone Is a F*cking Liar." This is one of my favorite album titles as of late because it tells me a few things. One, it's going to be cheeky. Two: sassy. Three: obscene. Four: out-there. And five: "Nasty." Just like Spank Rock himself. I loved 2006's "Yoyoyoyoyo" for all the reasons above, and they're the same reasons why a new track like "Nasty" is a success. Big Freedia (Sissy bounce, gah!) and Tyette are on board for this clubby banger. Freaking weirdos. "Everything" is due Sept. 27 through Bad...

After a massive showing at Coachella this month, German electro house and techno producer Boys Noize rocked New York's Webster Hall this past weekend before settling into a more private role for the remainder of his week in the city: Alexander Ridha is producing Mc Spank Rock's next album.
For the unaware, Boys Noize is a staple of the global dance-music touring circuit, a sophisticated, analog-happy producer who founded Boysnoize Records back in 2005. Lately, his thumping brand of sledgehammer productions have garnered him industry accolades, winning dance/electronica Independent Music Awards. And even Beatport.com has named him Best Electronic Artist three years in a row.
Ridha's project with Spank Rock isn't Boys Noize's first foray into album production. In fact, last year he co-wrote and produced Chilly Gonzales' album Ivory Tower.

About halfway through Miike Snow's concert Friday (October 15) at the Wiltern in Los Angeles, I had a revelation: I know every song that will be played during this show. Why? Because Miike Snow only have one album.
It's a safe bet that everyone at the concert owned that self-titled album or they wouldn't have been there, so we were all more or less the same level of Miike Snow fan. It's not like going to a Radiohead show, where the die-hards would rather hear a U.K. B-side than a radio single and would look on in disgust as the lesser fans sang every word of "Creep" louder than Thom Yorke. There's something unique about that first tour after a debut album. Everyone is really pumped up about that band, but one less-successful follow-up, and half the crowd might not be back for another live show.

Super producer Mark Ronson brought back the sounds of the Eighties on Wednesday, September 29 when he teamed up with Duran Duran at a concert in London. The DJ took to the stage at the city's Hackney Empire with his band The Business Intl to celebrate the release of his new album "Record Collection".
But Ronson took the members of the audience back in time for a journey through pop music history with the help of Duran Duran stars Simon Le Bon, Nick Rhodes and John Taylor. The trio performed a medley of their hits, including "Girls On Film" and their debut single "Planet Earth".
And Ronson admitted the live collaboration was a dream come true, telling the crowd, "If you'd have told me years ago that I'd get to play onstage with these legends it would have blown my mind." But Duran Duran wasn't the only Eighties act to hit...

London/New York's Mark Ronson's new gig is basically being the hippest bastard on the planet with his group Mark Ronson & The Business Intl. If you're the type to recoil at that, just look away now. Their latest video for "The Bike Song" off the upcoming release, "Record Collection" is a collision of all things cool -- at least through the retro lens of a 30-something. The specs, the rhymes, the chicks, and of course the bikes.
The ridiculous Japanese/Tron/R2D2/Knight Rider transforming bicycle routine comes out of nowhere, and then Ronson is just rolling, hooking up with his jobless friends, jacking fools, and kicking it with hot French girls. You know how it is. The one in white with the socks is his real life girl, actress Joséphine de la Baume, who he was snogging constantly at the shoot in a park in south London...

The Step Up 3D soundtrack. So many sexy abdomens, so little time. By time, I mean internal logic, script development, originality, and caring at all about the absence of these things. By sexy abdomens, I mean really sexy abdomens. If you like abdomens, Step Up 3D will make you very aroused indeed.
“People dance because dance can change things”, says one of the interchangeable limb-flailers in the film.
Well, I know that’s why Archbishop Desmond Tutu studied for his undergraduate degree in Jazz-Tap. But I must confess, I thought that the dancers and actors in Step Up, Step Up 2: The Streets and Step Up 3D danced because they’re paid lots of money, and there are enough cinema-goers willing to pay to see sexy hard-bodied young things flinging themselves about on-screen to make the whole thing commercially viable.

Right now I’m listening to Spank Rock. He is a rapper who has some quite, um, “risqué” lyrics — for example, “Coke on the tip will make a bitch go numb” — but he is, in reality a very shy guy. A friend of a friend actually went on a blind date with him once and he was apparently very nice and quiet.
Which makes me wonder: how many rappers are serious when they rap about downright heinous sexual stuff are just goofing around in the studio? When my friends and I say stuff like that we’re intentionally trying to come up with the most ridiculous stuff.
Or maybe they just have more interesting sex lives than I do.
Welcome to This Week in Comics, where every day is a comic book and — aw f*@k, I can’t redo the Casanova gag from last week with Scott Pilgrim this week,...

Bloc Party frontman Kele Okereke has been full of revelations lately, first coming out of the closet, now releasing a solo album on which he sets aside his guitar in favor of banging club beats. Then again, for those paying any attention to Okereke over the years, none of this should come as a surprise, with gay rumors being the way they are, and Bloc Party not being afraid to go electro when it felt the urge. Produced by XXXchange (Spank Rock, The Kills), The Boxer sets its dance-friendly agenda early, barely coming up for air during an opening trifecta ...

After making a dramatic splash at this year's Winter Music Conference, Dutch electronic DJ/producer Afrojack headed out on his first U.S. tour. This weekend will see him spinning on the East Coast for a gig Friday night (June 11) at Voyeur in Philadelphia, and on Saturday at Santos Party House in New York.
It's been an impressive year thus far for Afrojack (born Nick van de Wall). The 22-year-old rising star's electro-house single "Bangduck" is a house-set favorite, and his collaboration with crossover star David Guetta, "Louder Than Words," has been among the top downloads on the Beatport.com charts since the song dropped just over two weeks ago.
Saturday's gig at Santos will mark Afrojack's first performance in New York, and fittingly, he will be sharing the bill...

For the last five years, the Italian DJ/production duo Crookers have been around the world and back, setting the international dance-music scene ablaze with their epic DJ sets and trademark remixes. Their most renowned remix, of Kid Cudi's "Day 'N' Nite," entered the U.K. singles chart at #2, and even enjoyed some serious rotation on U.S. radio. But after remixing choice cuts by everyone from Britney Spears to Timbaland to Lady Gaga, where do they go from here?
According to Phra and Bot, you keep on keeping on. Since their enormous break with "Day 'N' Nite," "not so much has changed," they said. "We've just continued touring and producing ... and touring a lot ... and then producing." But the production isn't limited to remixes anymore.
