Exclusive: NBCUniversal (NBCU) Global TV Distribution has struck a content deal with Asian streamer Begin.
According to Begin, this is the first time that NBCU content will be legally watchable in Pakistan, as the U.S. major’s movies and shows have historically been pirated via Pakistani telecoms and internet service providers.
The nascent streamer, which is headquartered in the UAE, backed by Z2C Limited and available in Pakistan, has picked up movies including Oppenheimer, The Holdovers and Kung Fu Panda 4 as part of the multi-year deal. NBCU TV series in the deal include Ted, Based on a True Story and Peacock’s Tattooist of Auschwitz adaptation.
“We know our audiences crave fresh and exciting content, and with exclusive access to NBCUniversal’s biggest hits and new releases, we can’t wait to satisfy their appetite with the best in entertainment,” said Jonathan Mark, Begin’s CEO and Co-Founder.

As buyers touch down at Lax for the annual LA Screenings, it will be a case of a return to the norm following the unusual circumstances of last year. The Hollywood labor strikes not only threw confusion on what would be a realistic purchase, but also stopped acquisitions executives getting face time (and a quick selfie) with acting and writing talent — something many value as part of their buying process.
There will be no such issues this year, and the studio sales bosses are relishing a return to the norm. “We’re really excited, it feels like we’re really back after the strikes and firing on all cylinders,” says David Decker, President of Content Sales for Warner Bros. Discovery (Wbd). “We have an abundance of titles that run the gamut of broadcast and streaming in drama and comedy. We’ll be showing the best of what Wbd stands for.

When an estimated 1,000 international TV buyers descend on Los Angeles for the annual TV event known as the LA Screenings, they will see a contracted market still recovering from the twin Hollywood strikes of last year and, to a somewhat lesser extent, the pandemic.
It kicks off with the LA Screenings Independents, held May 15-17 for smaller studios and distributors at the Fairmont Century Plaza Hotel, which are then followed by screenings at the major studios’ respective lots across May 18-22 where they present their latest shows. They may also host a variety of events for their clients during those days, which may include cocktail receptions and luncheons or dinners with talent and executives.
While stalled projects ramped up as soon as the strikes ended, some delays were inevitable. “A couple of months ago I was wondering if we were going to be entertaining [buyers],” says Lisa Kramer, president, International Content Licensing,...

NBCUniversal is continuing its push into free, ad-supported television (Fast) by rolling out nearly 30 new channels to be distributed at launch on Amazon Freevee and Xumo Play.
Many of the offerings from across the NBCU Television & Streaming portfolio and NBCUniversal Global Distribution library will be available to viewers on demand for the first time at no charge. The last time a writers strike impacted the LA Screenings in 2008, the world was in recession and studios pared back their spend on glitzy marketing and all-singing, all-dancing parties and soirees. We are not quite at that stage, but, in 2023, these conditions have an air of familiarity.
Studios execs are under way with planning for their annual international TV buyer showcases following this week’s Upfront presentations, but there is a sense of uncertainty from all sides heading into the week, as pickets spring up and shows shut down. With U.S. studio shows currently on the back burner, learning exactly what will be ready when has become a key question for execs arriving in town.
The stresses are different this time around, notes Dermot Horan, Director of Co-Productions and Acquisitions at Irish public broadcaster RTÉ. “The last time there was a strike, more of us were reliant on network programming,...

NBCUniversal Global Distributor has struck an old school multi-year content deal in Europe’s Baltic region.
NBCU’s sales arm has struck a wide-ranging set of agreements with TV3 Group for Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. This will encompass first-run and library films and scripted shows, animated series, Telemundo’s ‘Super Series’, TV movies and direct-to-vide films, and unscripted shows.
Studios output deals like this have become increasingly rare in the era of global streaming services and local original programs so the deal is a boon for NBCU. The Comcast-owned distributor has worked with TV3 in the past but the agreement is understood to be on a far greater scale.
Included in the agreement are the Jurassic, Bourne and Fast film franchises, animated films such as Abominable and Trolls; and other titles such as Belfast, Nope and BlacKkKlansman, plus current series La Brea, Chicago Fire, Law & Order, Young Rock and Devils,...

Kevin MacLellan is exiting NBCUniversal after nearly two decades.
MacLellan, the chairman of NBCU’s global distribution and international operations, will stay on with the company during the transition period before his official departure. Jeff Shell, chairman of NBCUniversal Film and Entertainment, made the announcement to staffers in a memo on Wednesday that has been obtained by Variety.
With MacLellan’s departure, Shell announced that NBCU is merging its domestic and international operations to “take advantage of our increased international footprint and the growing number of platforms for our content,” per the memo.
Under the new structure, Bonnie Hammer will take on oversight of NBCU’s International Studios. Jeff Wachtel, who previously reported to MacLellan, will now report to Hammer and George Cheeks. The news comes just weeks after it was announced that Hammer would be overseeing all broadcast and cable studio operations via Universal TV and Universal Content Productions.

Sky is looking to become Europe’s “most important producer of original content” as it doubles its investment over the next five years and hopes that NBCUniversal’s move to take over its international content sales will help it reach “another level”.

With its takeover of highly successful pay-tv service Sky now almost assured, Comcast is not expected to do anything to upset its new golden goose. But a change in culture seems inevitable, and possibly in management.
Comcast sees enough to like in Sky to shell out $40 billion and is expected to retain much of the team that has built the business. It would also be a PR misstep to make wholesale changes. “It wouldn’t be a good look if they have taken over one of the biggest TV companies in Europe and take out the European management,” said Tim Westcott, director of research and analysis at Ihs Markit.
A key question, however, is whether CEO Jeremy Darroch will stay on. A longtime Sky exec, Darroch is credited with keeping the company profitable and cutting-edge in a fast-changing media landscape, and with shepherding it through its protracted sale, which culminated in an auction last Saturday.

LONDON -- NBC Universal is poised to launch a major new global, subscription-based video-on-demand service within a year, NBC Universal international TV head Belinda Menendez said Thursday.
The company is "aggressively marketing" the TV Box service in Europe and Asia, and expects to close distribution deals in "between five and 10 markets" imminently, she said.
TV Box service will offer current and classic NBC Uni series and its content will be regularly refreshed to optimize the service.
The division aims to serve as a stand-alone pay service in some markets, while in others, it will be made available to customers paying for top-tier channel bundles.
For key shows like sci-fi drama "Heroes", NBC Uni will consider offering the programs as a premium-priced on-off downloads ahead of the broadcast window.
"TV Box is the next step in the evolution of our branded on-demand product offering, it's the television version of PictureBox (subscription movie-on-demand service)," Menendez said.
NBC's PictureBox service signed a distribution deal with British broadband platform BT Vision.

NBC Universal International TV and sibling cabler Bravo have separately inked deals Down Under with Foxtel. The deal involves the Australian pay TV network licensing not just key Bravo shows but also the cabler's U.S. marketing campaign "Watch What Happens" for its arty Arena channel.
The separate but synched-up agreements were orchestrated by Belinda Menendez, president of NBC Universal International Television Distribution; Frances Berwick, executive vp and GM of Bravo Media; and Brian Walsh, executive director of television and marketing at Foxtel.
The agreement marks the first global expansion of a branding campaign from the NBC Uni fold and will include on-air and off-air graphics.
The program licensing deal includes "Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List," "The Real Housewives of Orange County," "Top Chef" and "Step It Up & Dance."
Walsh said the "renovation" of Arena will set it apart from any other channel on Australian television. "Bravo's audience and demographic are a perfect fit for where Arena is heading, and the new programming will provide a real alternative of exclusive and never-before-seen content," he said.
