One of the wonderful things about independent home video labels is that they are able to champion individual filmmakers in a way that major studios have no interest in doing. Arrow Video has taken an interest in giving Argento, Romero, and Fulci their due; while Severin Films had their sights set on making the films of Jess Franco, Walerian Borowcyzk, and Joe D'Amato the credit they deserve. Third Window Films is also determined to help bring some of their favorite directors some exposure, even if the Western world hasn't yet discovered them. When I spoke to Third Window's Adam Torel, he gave me three names of filmmakers/auteurs that he really stood behind with his label, and those three are Tetsuya Nakashima, Sion Sono, and Miki Satoshi. The first two should be names not unfamiliar to many Twitch readers, Nakashima's Kamikaze Girls and Sono's Love Exposure, among others, are some...

'Nude Nuns with Big Guns' doesn't need much of an endorsement other than what its title suggests -- sexy servants of God wielding wicked guns. Joseph Guzman's latest about a vengeful nun on a rampage looks like part nunsploitation, part mexploitation and all entertaining. If you still have exploitation fever after Rodriguez's 'Machete' then this one should cure what ails you.
Asun Ortega stars as Sister Sarah, who is abused, brainwashed and drugged by the corrupt clergy of her church. While that might sound like a good time to some of you, Sister Sarah makes it her mission to track down those who wronged her -- after God told her to, of course. She quickly develops a bad habit for big guns and hunts her tormentors like prey in the ultimate battle between good versus evil. The church has other plans,...

The appropriately named prog rock band Goblin is most famous for their collaboration with Dario Argento on his gory giallo films, especially Suspiria, arguably Argento's most well-known and best film to date. Goblin provided Argento with unforgettable soundtracks to Tenebre, Phenomenon, and Deep Red, as well as Argento's 2001 film Sleepless, which brought the band back together again after 22 years. I'm ashamed to say I have not yet seen Sleepless, but after sitting through Argento's more recent movies like Do You Like Hitchcock? and even Mother of Tears, I'm a little wary.
Goblin also supplied soundtracks to other Italian horror movies, as well as giallo and soft porn director Joe D'Amato's Beyond the Darkness. They did the soundtrack to George Romero's Dawn of the Dead, aka Zombi, under the name The Goblins; much later, Shaun of the Dead used one of the songs from the soundtrack in their film...

One of the many disadvantages of living in a place like New Hamsphire is that you have to live on the edge vicariously through the lives of people who live closer to the action through correspondence so it was a while before I got into the depths of crazy horror movies. Though I'd been watching horror for years, we never had the convenience of one of those video stores that bought one of everything from their distributors and the horror sections around these parts were woefully understocked. If you wanted to watch A Nightmare on Elm Street 6, you could find it just about anywhere but if you wanted to go out on a limb and see something wildly exotic, you were screwed. Getting your hands on stuff bearing names like Lenzi, D'Amato and Deodato you had to drive into Boston and pay premium prices on factory pre-records and overpriced bootlegs.

Starring Ms. Ringo Starr, Barbara Bach, in her greatest horror role, "Island of the Fishmen" saw a VHS release in the U.S. under the title "Screamers." Long unavailable, the film is finally getting a proper DVD release from Mya Communications on June 30. Mya Communications is proving itself to be an awesome label, already having announced "Legend of Blood Castle" for May. The company is also releasing Joe D'Amato's "Horrible" on June 30 too.
