One week ago was the second anniversary of the end of Killing Eve after four seasons. But as great as the show was, with no small amount of fascinating murderous dynamics between the leads, many of us were incredibly disappointed by the finale.
After all, not only did the writers utilize the generally despised 'bury your gays' trope by ruining one of the most vibrant, albeit insane queer couples on TV, but they also killed off one of the best characters ever created, the psychopathic but lovable assassin Villanelle.
Villanelle is a great character in her own right, thanks to the writing prowess of Luke Jennings, but she wouldn't be as well known and loved if it weren't for the performance of the great Jodie Comer on the show. The actress has come a long way from British soap operas to one of the best projects in television history, from...

Tracing the evolution of a fictional motorbike gang known as the Vandals, writer-director Jeff Nichols’s The Bikeriders takes its inspiration from a photobook of the same name by influential mid-20th-century photographer Danny Lyon. A major contributor to the “new realism” photography movement, Lyon lived alongside his leather-clad petrolhead subjects for months at a time, helping him create urgent, spontaneous images of their outlaw lifestyle that oozed authenticity. Unfortunately, those latter qualities are in short supply in the film, but the sheer exuberance of the story and the stylistic brio of Nichols’s direction often compensate.
The Bikeriders is narrated by Kathy (Jodie Comer), the girlfriend of fiercely committed young Vandals member Benny (Austin Butler). She relays the idiosyncrasies and transgressions of the gang from a slight remove as it evolves from a blue-collar fraternity and surrogate family to a nihilistic crime syndicate. As endearing as Kathy’s disapproving bemusement can be,...

From the word go, Steven Soderbergh’s crime caper Full Circle works furiously to introduce us to all of its relevant players. Derek (Timothy Olyphant) and Sam (Claire Danes) are a wealthy couple who enjoy a life of luxury thanks to the success of Sam’s father, Jeff (Dennis Quaid), a famous chef. But while everything seems like the picture of perfection inside their lavishly remodeled New York apartment, dark family secrets are dragged, kicking and screaming, into the light when their teenage son, Jared (Ethan Stoddard), is kidnapped.
The abduction plan is put into motion by a Queens-based crime syndicate headed by Cch Pounder’s enigmatic matriarch Savitri Mahabir. She believes that the actions of her late husband have left her family cursed for years, and after consulting with a spiritual leader back in Guyana, she concludes that capturing young Jared is the only way to remove it.

Chicago – Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com audio film reviews for the new releases “The Blackening,” a tart horror/comedy directed by Tim Story and the mystery comedy/romance “Maggie Moores(s), directed by John Slattery. Both In theaters since June 16th.
Rating: 4.0/5.0
“The Blackening” makes fun of the trope that the African-American character is often the first to die in horror movies by placing an all-Black group of friends in the proverbial cabin in the woods, during the Juneteenth weekend. There are confronted by a masked killer who demands that they rank their “degree of blackness” so that he can determine the correct order in which to kill them, and the cabin dwellers must rely on a combination of street smarts and their own knowledge of black history and horror films to survive.

On paper, the concept of Maggie Moore(s), which premiered this week at the Tribeca Film Festival, is incredibly fascinating: a darkly comedic murder mystery about a bumbling police chief (Jon Hamm) and his wisecracking deputy (Nick Mohammed) trying to solve the mystery involving the deaths of two women who have the same name and were killed around the same time. Add in the fact that it is loosely based on a true story, and you have all the proper ingredients to make the next Coen Brothers masterpiece, and it seems like the film’s director, John Slattery, thought so as well as he takes the Coen Brothers influence and runs with it. I just wished that he ran in a different direction though because the end result is a tonally dissonant, poorly shot and overall underwhelming film.

If his post-“Mad Men” career has taught us anything, it’s that Jon Hamm is a natural comic actor who happens to be great in dramatic roles rather than the other way around. At the risk of downplaying his exemplary work as Don Draper, the 52-year-old has seemed most in his element in the likes of “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt,” “Curb Your Enthusiasm” and especially last year’s criminally underseen “Confess, Fletch.” “Maggie Moore(s)” finds him somewhere in the middle of the comedy/drama spectrum as a small-town police chief investigating the murders of two women with the same name — an intriguing premise to be sure, but one that Hamm’s “Mad Men” co-star John Slattery, in his sophomore directorial effort, struggles to bring to a satisfying conclusion.
Part of the problem is that it isn’t actually a mystery. Beginning with a title card informing us that “some of this actually happened,...

It is always an occasion for celebration when Jon Hamm and Tina Fey are back together on screen — big or small — having shared credits on various 30 Rock and SNL episodes (and the upcoming film version of Fey’s Mean Girls). But their latest collaboration is a clear departure, as well as a rare chance to see Fey out of her comedic zone.
Directed by John Slattery, Hamm’s multi-Emmy-nominated Mad Men co-star, Maggie Moore(s), which world premiered Monday night as part of the Tribeca Festival Spotlight Narrative section, is on paper an extremely clever premise for a murder mystery. When one woman named Maggie Moore is found murdered, the man responsible for the hit job (who also happens to be her husband) stumbles on to yet another woman with the exact same name living just a few blocks away in the same small American town. There are actors who direct films, and there are those who establish themselves as real-deal filmmakers. In the first category we find John Slattery, a fine actor who, after a respectable career as “that guy,” reached a new level at age 45 thanks to Mad Men. The AMC series was still on the air when Slattery directed his first film, God’s Pocket, in 2014, and he returns now, nearly 10 years on, with the dark comedy Maggie Moore(s). Following his on-screen reunion with Mad Men co-star Jon Hamm in last year’s Confess, Fletch, Slattery here casts the actor in the lead role as Jordan Sanders, a lonely police chief investigating the connection between the murders of two women, each named Maggie Moore.
The first Maggie to die (played by Emily Blunt) is married to Jay (Micah Stock), the owner of a restaurant franchise who plans to become the Howard Schultz of submarine sandwiches.

Forget about who’s on first: It’s all about which Maggie Moore is the real Maggie Moore.
Crime caper comedy “Maggie Moore(s)” stars Jon Hamm as a small-town police chief who investigates the back-to-back murders of two women, both named Maggie Moore. Per the official synopsis, things quickly ratchet up in the comedy film.
Hamm’s “Mad Men” co-star John Slattery produces and directs from a script by “Halloweentown” scribe Paul Bernbaum. Tina Fey, who previously starred alongside Hamm in “30 Rock” and will act alongside him for the upcoming “Mean Girls” movie musical, portrays one of Maggie’s next-door neighbors, who becomes key to the investigation.
Micah Stock, Nick Mohammed, Mary Holland, and Happy Anderson also star.

Screen Media has unveiled an official trailer for the indie film titled Maggie Moore(s), the second feature directed by actor John Slattery (his directorial debut was God's Pocket with Philip Seymour Hoffman in 2014). This is premiering at the 2023 Tribeca Film Festival in June before it opens in limited theaters later in June. Maggie Moore(s) takes place in a dusty desert town where nothing ever happens, as a police chief is suddenly faced with the back-to-back murders of two women with the same name. (Hence the title of the film.) Who did it and why? Jon Hamm stars as police chief Jordan Sanders, who must deal with all kinds of small town shenanigans and secrets. The cast includes Tina Fey, Micah Stock, Nick Mohammed, Happy Anderson, & Mary Holland. The trailer has a darkly comedic edge to it,...

"We can get out of this!" Fox has debuted a short new Comic-Con promo trailer for The New Mutants, the sort-of X-Men spin-off movie. This week’s episode of Snowpiercer is all about conflict, as revolution has finally arrived but we also see several other characters at odds beyond Layton (Daveed Diggs) and company waging their class warfare on those who wield more power and influence over the titular train.

Murphy) and the Folgers, Ruth (Alison Wright) finds herself front and center of a coup in First Class, as the elite passengers on Snowpiercer want to get to the bottom of just who exactly is running the train – Mr. Wilford or Melanie Cavill (Jennifer Connelly), who just happens to always have a means of covering up the fact that the leader and creator of Snowpiercer isn’t actually aboard the train. Hello, everyone. Last week, I had to take a few days off to deal with some personal stuff, but I’m back now with my latest recap for TNT’s Snowpiercer series that digs into episodes 4 and 5, where we see the culmination of the murder mystery aboard the titular train, as well as the resulting actions and fallout from everything that follows once the killers and their motives are revealed. Oh, and there’s a whole lot more happening as well.
Now, on to the good stuff…
In “Without Their Maker,” the theme of episode four is spelled out rather simply: systems resist change without their maker, which of course is in relation to the fact that Mr. Wilford is more myth than man after seven years aboard the Snowpiercer. And with Nikki now brutally murdered, Layton (Daveed Diggs) sets out to find the killer that must be a First Class passenger,...

This Snowpiercer review contains spoilers.
Snowpiercer Episode 3
One of the smartest things Snowpiercer has done with its first season is, as characters gain prominence in the story, offer up some cold openings. In this case, Dr. Klimpt (Happy Anderson) is the one discussing how the economy of Snowpiercer functions. Not the buy-ins of the first class passengers, but the real economy that shuttles drugs from third class to first class and back again, trading drugs for gold for sex for the most important thing of all, access.
All things that people kill, and have been killed for, on a train that’s 1,001 cars long. It’s exposition, and it’s needed exposition for the world the show is building, but by and large it’s been done stylishly and provides a bit of insight into the character giving the explanation that is necessary to flesh out secondary characters like the good doctor.

To say that we’ve been waiting a long, long time for Bad Boys 3 would be to deal in wild understatement.

High-octane action ensues in the latest teaser for Bad Boys For Life, Sony’s long-long-gestating sequel featuring Will Smith and Martin Lawrence’s fast-talking agents.
Embedded below, it signals perhaps the perfect primer for tomorrow’s trailer reveal, as we catch a glimpse of Smith and Lawrence speeding through the streets, before engaging in a suitably explosive firefight with a helicopter. It’s not quite Bayhem – the flavor of blockbuster action that defined the opening two installments in the Bad Boys series – but we’ll be damned if it’s not entertaining.
When, exactly, we can expect the full trailer to debut is another question entirely (9am Pt is our best guess), but we’ll have a full play-by-play breakdown for you here as soon as it’s live. For now, though, you’ll have to make do with another 15-second sizzle reel heralding the return of Mike Lowrey and Marcus Burnett.

Netflix's psychological thriller Mindhunter first premiered back in 2017, a 10-episode drama based on the true crime book Mind Hunter: Inside the FBI's Elite Serial Crime Unit. Now that it's returned for a second season, you might be wondering once more: is it based on a true story? Pretty much.
The three main characters on Mindhunter are based on real people, though they aren't exact copies. The two FBI special agents from the bureau's Behavioral Science Unit are Holden Ford and Bill Tench, played by Jonathan Groff and Holt McCallany, respectively. Those two men are based on John E. Douglas (who co-authored the book on which Mindhunter is based) and Robert K. Ressler.
Douglas, now 74 years old, is one of the first criminal profilers in the United States. After serving in the Air Force, he went to work for the FBI in 1970 - first as a sniper in the Swat...

Here’s a film where the term “they don’t make em like this anymore” really does apply. A largely single location independent drama with stylized dialogue and a less than politically correct edge? Mixing David Mamet with Quentin Tarantino would normally mean an indie with a wise ass streak and a modern sensibility. Here, with The Standoff at Sparrow Creek, what we have is something far more old fashioned than that. Essentially a whodunit, this flick offers up a compelling tale that keeps you wired in right up until the very end. With a single minded focus, it tells a razor sharp story about as well as it can be told, complete with a hell of an ending, to boot. A drama/mystery, the movie is literally a standoff. Gannon (James Badge Dale) is a former cop who lives in the woods and is a member of a local militia.

The film begins in total silence to the point where you wonder if something went wrong with the sound. The camera pans through still trees until finding Gannon (James Badge Dale) on the ground with rifle ready to take out the deer we can assume is somewhere out of frame. It’s only when we hear the pop of guns in the distance that we realize first-time writer/director Henry Dunham has been meticulously ensuring that we process exactly what he needs us to before heading towards the solitary locale we’ll spend the rest of The Standoff at Sparrow Creek‘s short yet tense 88-minute runtime. Having Gannon visible when those blasts go off is deliberate because there must be no question that he’s the one man we can implicitly trust.

I’ve got a trailer here that you’ve got to watch for a new thriller called The Standoff at Sparrow Creek. The movie premiered at Fantastic Fest and was met with a lot of positive buzz.
This first trailer for the movie is certainly riveting and quickly got my attention and held me in. The story centers on a group of militia members who fall into a state of paranoia and anxiety after one of their members goes and shoots up a police funeral. The thing is, no one knows who did it and someone is hiding something.
Here’s the official synopsis:
After a mass shooting at a police funeral, reclusive ex-cop Gannon realizes that the killer belongs to the same militia he joined after quitting the force. Knowing the police will be closing in on them, Gannon quarantines his fellow militiamen in a remote lumber mill. There,...

"Do you have any idea what's going on out there?" Rlje has debuted the first trailer for one of this year's big discoveries, a contained thriller titled The Standoff at Sparrow Creek, the feature debut of Henry Dunham. The film premiered at the Toronto Film Festival, then played to rave reviews at Fantastic Fest, earning some of the best buzz out of both fests as a major find. It's a deviously smart film about a group of men in a militia who meet in a warehouse after a shooting, only to discover that one of their guns is missing. They begin to accuse each other in an attempt to figure out who did it, and it gets even better as it goes on. This has been compared to Reservoir Dogs, but it's really something of its own and it's an incredible debut. Sparrow Creek stars James Badge Dale, Patrick Fischler,...

From Jack the Ripper to John Wayne Gacy to Aileen Wuornos, the horrific legacies of serial killers have managed to both appall and intrigue, as people attempt to explore and understand the darkest depths of the human psyche. Hollywood has mined this territory for years, with dozens of scripted true-crime movies and TV series exploring the “why” of those who snap.

‘Mindhunter’: Watch Interviews With the Real Serial Killers and FBI Agents in David Fincher’s Series
Netflix’s serial killer drama “Mindhunter” has become the streaming giant’s new must-binge series. Executive produced and co-directed by David Fincher, the show is inspired by the stories of real criminal profilers John E. Douglas and Robert K. Ressler, who headed the FBI’s Behavioral Science Unit and interviewed dozens of America’s most infamous serial killers throughout their careers. While the characters played by Jonathan Groff and Holt McCallany are only inspired by the real FBI agents, the serial killers featured in the 10-episode season are the real deal.

"Do you know what mutants are?" 20th Century Fox has unveiled the first teaser trailer for the new X-Men movie, this one title New Mutants, based on the spin-off comic series about a group of young mutants. Instead of continuing on with the X-Men superheroes we all know from the series of movies, Fox is trying something a bit different with a new group - starring Maisie Williams as Wolfsbane, Anya Taylor-Joy as Magik, Charlie Heaton as Cannonball, Henry Zaga as Sunspot, and Blu Hunt as Mirage. Also starring Alice Braga and Happy Anderson. So far this looks very horrific, yet still seemingly aimed at younger audiences, with the director of The Fault in Our Stars at the helm. This is our very first look, it's worth a watch. Not at all what you're expecting, way more of a horror than an X-Men movie, but it looks intriguing. Here's the...

Netflix still hasn’t formally announced their reported acquisition of Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman — with a ballooned budget now at $125 million — but the company has a few more high-profile original films coming before then. This summer will see the release of Bong Joon-ho’s monster movie Okja, then later this year they’ll release the $90 million sci-fi action feature Bright.
Coming from David Ayer, who has a proclivity for both cop dramas and fantasy (as seen in his Oscar-winning tentpole Suicide Squad), the two worlds merge with his next film. Following Will Smith as a human detective who teams with an orc cop (Joel Edgerton) to regain control of a magic wand from evil forces, it sounds just peculiar enough to pique our curiosity. The first teaser has now arrived, which runs a brief 30 seconds as it introduces this strange world of creature-filled policing.
