Exclusive: A fan-favorite character is leaving And Just Like That… Karen Pittman, who played Nya Wallace in the first two seasons of the Sex and the City sequel, will not be returning for the upcoming third season of the hit Max series.
Pittman was already a series regular on Apple TV+’s The Morning Show when she was cast in And Just Like That…, originally as a recurring in Season 1; she was upped to a series regular in Season 2. Earlier this month, she also was tapped for a starring role in Forever, Netflix’s upcoming drama series reimagining Judy Blume’s novel from Mara Brock Akil.
This put Pittman in the middle of a scheduling conundrum involving three high-profile series on three major streamers filming new seasons this year within similar timeframes.
According to sources, there was every intention for Pittman to be in Season 3 of Ajlt, and Nya was written into the scripts.

Any artist will tell you that “making it” is a myth. Whether it’s music, dance, acting, writing, or anything else — there’s no point at which most people with a creative passion feel it entirely achieved and therefore no longer a priority. Ambition is a hungry beast with a growing appetite, and the standards for success change at every level — and differ between friends and collaborators, testing them every step of the way.
It’s a truth baked into Issa Rae’s “Rap Sh!t,” which premiered its second season on November 9. Shawna (Aida Osman) and Mia (KaMillion) are officially going on tour as a group, still miles from the kind of fame and acclaim they dream of, but clearly moving forward, even with a few steps back. “Rap Sh!t,” like “Atlanta” before it, doesn’t shy away from the girls’ increasing respect and access, but reminds viewers that the hardship isn’t over.

Spoilers ahead! If you haven’t seen the season 2 premiere of “And Just Like That…” on Max, proceed with caution.
And Just Like That, we’re back! Whether you love it or love to hate watch it, Max’s “Sex and the City” spinoff series, “And Just Like That…”, has returned for a second season after the much-discussed first season in 2021.
On Thursday, the streaming service released the first two episodes, and while there was no Big death or traumatic funerals, there were still plenty of gasp-worthy moments — almost entirely centred around Miranda Hobbes (Cynthia Nixon) and Ché Diaz’s (Sara Ramirez) relationship.
The show opened with a sexy montage of all of our favourite characters, old and new, getting it on to the soundtrack of Elton John and Britney Spears’ “Hold Me Closer”.

Need a refresher on the events of Season 1 of “And Just Like That” before the Season 2 premiere on Thursday, June 22?
Here are the highlights of the life-altering things that happened with Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker), Miranda (Cynthia Nixon), and Charlotte (Kristin Davis), as well as several new characters. The original cast, which was often criticized for not including any non-white characters, was expanded by adding a Poc Bff for the three leads, to varying degrees of storytelling success.
Producers also worked in an Awol Kim Cattrall (who has a cameo in Season 2) as Samantha thanks to some timely texts after her off-screen fallout with Carrie.

She's back for one last kick at the can!
On The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Season 5 Episode 1, we get a series of heartfelt goodbyes and a glimpse at the future. It's a bittersweet beginning to the end of one of television's most delightful comedies.
Warning: This review contains spoilers for Episodes 1 - 3 of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Season 5.
The first episode is aptly titled because we "go forward" in time to 1981. Alexandra Socha is uncanny as the grown-up version of Midge's daughter, Esther.
She was so convincing that initially, I wondered if they had done visual effects or computer trickery on Rachel Brosnahan. Did Socha win a Midge Maisel impersonation contest? She's a marvel!
Poor Esther is neurotic and brilliant, which makes complete sense. We don't get to spend too much time with her here, but just enough to get an idea of how much Midge has affected her daughter.

Standup comedian Midge Maisel certainly had a tumultuous fourth season on the Amazon Prime series that bears her name, but actress Rachel Brosnahan shined as her character stumbled. After being unceremoniously kicked off of Shy Baldwin’s (LeRoy McClain) tour, Midge spent the penultimate season of “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” trying to reestablish herself on her own terms, performing as emcee at a burlesque club. For her turn as an underdog once more, the actress earned another Screen Actors Guild Award nomination for best comedy actress.
Brosnahan is one of the most feted performers in the category this year. She earned her first citation as an ensemble member of “House of Cards” and has gone on to earn five more for “Maisel,” a tally which includes one solo and two ensemble victories. Besting her by one nomination apiece are Christina Applegate and Jean Smart; the former has seven nominations to her credit for “Samantha Who?...

When Thomas Mizer and Curtis Moore joined “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” in the third season, they were tasked with writing ’50s-era pop hits for Shy Baldwin (LeRoy McClain). For Season 4, creator Amy Sherman-Palladino upped the ante: She asked them to write a song for Harry Belafonte (Josh A. Dawson).
“I think she likes to tease us,” Moore tells Gold Derby at our Meet the Experts: Composers panel (watch the exclusive video interview above). “No, I think with ‘Maisel,’ she’s always trying to push the envelope a little bit. And I think with this, she was really looking to just have an added bonus to what we’re already doing because we also wrote a song for Shy in that episode [‘City Lights’], his next hit. “These people like to keep me on my toes. Just when I think I kind of have the hang of it, or start to feel more comfortable, there’s some giant curveball, like the ‘Aristotle’ scene, or ‘imitating another comic’ scene,” said Rachel Brosnahan, star of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. She’s talking about stand-up, which her trailblazing comic and Upper West Side mother of two, Miriam “Midge” Maisel, really does a lot of in the Prime Video series’ penultimate season.

“I thought that must be from an earlier season,” remembers Robin Urdang about seeing her name as a 2022 Emmy Award nominee. The music supervisor on the Amazon Prime comedy series “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” was looking to see if her colleagues Thomas Mizer and Curtis Moore earned a nomination for their original music and lyrics when she came across her own citation, which came as a surprise to her, and she feels “thrilled and grateful” for the recognition. Welcome to My Favorite Scene! In this series, IndieWire speaks to actors behind a few of our favorite television performances about their personal-best onscreen moment and how it came together.

The actress is up for her fourth Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series as Miriam “Midge” Maisel in Amazon’s breakout comedy — which she won in 2018 — and when she hopped on the phone with IndieWire, she was torn between two Season 4 highlights.
The scenes bookend Season 4 and explore two of Midge’s most important relationships: Susie (Alex Borstein) and Lenny (Luke Kirby). After her stunning Drama Actress victory in 2020, Zendaya returns to the Emmy Awards this year with triple the number of nominations (make that quadruple when her series bid as an executive producer gets finalized). In addition to her second nomination for acting in “Euphoria,” the multitalented star also nabbed two more in the Music and Lyrics category for penning the lyrics to “I’m Tired” and “Elliot’s Song.”
She faces off against a field that includes offerings from “Schmigadoon!,” “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” and “This Is Us.”
“Euphoria” won this race back in 2020 for “All For Us,” which was penned by Labrinth, That tune bested two compositions from “Little Fires Everywhere” by Ingrid Michaelson: “The Black Godfather” co-written by Pharrell Williams, and “Watchmen” by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross. Curated by the IndieWire Crafts team, Craft Considerations is a platform for filmmakers to talk about recent work we believe is worthy of awards consideration. In partnership with Amazon, for this edition we look at how production designer Bill Groom, costume designer Donna Zakowska, and director of photography M. David Mullen created the exquisite period detail of “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.”
As Season 4 of the Amazon series “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” opens, stand-up comedian Miriam “Midge” Maisel (Rachel Brosnahan) finds herself at a crossroads. Fired from her job on tour with singer Shy Baldwin (Leroy McClain), Midge decides the time has come to be uncompromising in her career, and she finds a surprising outlet for the creative freedom that she craves: a bawdy strip club where Midge performs between acts, slowly attracting a female audience that is a source of both added income and new frustrations for the club’s owner.

“Once you’re part of the ‘Maisel’ family, you never really leave,” says LeRoy McClain about what he has been told by “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” creator Amy Sherman-Palladino. The sentiment certainly holds true in the case of McClain’s character Shy Baldwin on the Amazon Prime series, who after a dramatic exit in the third season finale returned for two episodes in Season 4. “I definitely thought that the story lent itself to needing some sort of resolution,” McClain shares. When it came to creating original period-style songs for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’s fourth season, composers-songwriters Tom Mizer and Curtis Moore say the thoroughly music-savvy creator Amy Sherman-Palladino frequently throws them challenging curveballs.
During an onstage interview at Deadline’s Sound & Screen awards-season music event, the duo revealed that was the case in composing “Maybe Monica,” which was sung at the wedding of closeted pop singer Shy Baldwin (LeRoy McClain) by his best man, real-life calypso hitmaker Harry Belafonte (Josh A. Dawson).
“We had to think about both a song that could conceivably be a pop song of the era, but also his best friend has written a song, who he’s sort of leaving behind to do this,” said Mizer.
“Usually every time that we get an assignment to write a song, we send them two or three or four various bits of songs: ‘Is this kind of a way to go?...

The knowledge that "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel" invented soulful crooner Shy Baldwin will haunt me until the end of time. Between the stage presence of Leroy McClain and the powerful vocals of Darius de Haas, it's hard to believe that Shy is merely an amalgamation of similar sultry-voiced '60s pop stars. Similarly, it's hard to see Midge Maisel (Rachel Brosnahan) walk through her candy-colored New York City knowing the comedian's rise to fame is nothing more than a work of fiction (though she is inspired by some actual comedians). All this is just the magic of "Maisel." Amy Sherman-Palladino and...

Welcome to our weekly column Can’t Miss Episode of the Week! Every Saturday we’ll be spotlighting a different episode of television from that week that we thought was exceptional and a must-see. Check back to see if your favorite show got the nod — or to learn about a new one! Spoilers ahead. The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Season 4 opens with the sound of laughing. It’s jarring because while we can assume stand-up comedian Miriam “Midge” Maisel (Rachel Brosnahan) just made a joke, we haven’t ourselves heard the punchline. Within moments, though, Prime Video’s Mrs. Maisel, which returned on February 17 after a two-year hiatus, immediately reminds us why this series deserves our laughter. The only thing funnier than Midge having a full meltdown about being dropped from the Shy Baldwin (Leroy McClain) tour, is her manager Susie’s (Alex Borstein) attempts to deal with her. “It completes the outfit,...

When last seen in the Season 3 finale of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, rising comic Miriam “Midge” Maisel (Emmy-winner Rachel Brosnahan) was dramatically fired on an airport tarmac from an international tour with superstar singer Shy Baldwin (Leroy McClain) after she nearly outed him on New York’s famed Apollo stage! What’s up for Season 4? Well, to quote Midge in the show’s official trailer: “You know what’s great about me? It’s when I’m me every single show. I’m going to say exactly what’s on my mind!” For more insight, we spoke to the marvelous Ms. Brosnahan on the showbiz comedy’s Brooklyn set as the season finished shooting, and more recently, on Zoom about what comes next for Midge, her career, and her family dynamics. And Just Like That... made quite the splash with its premiere on Dec. 9. Not only did it kick off with Mr. Big's shocking death, but it also introduced us to two of our new favorite characters: Dr. Nya Wallace and Che Diaz.
Played by Karen Pittman, Dr. Wallace is a professor at Columbia Law School. She teaches Miranda's (Cynthia Nixon) law class, and although their relationship starts off rocky, they eventually become friends. When we asked Pittman how she initially felt about joining the beloved franchise, she admitted to Popsugar that "there were nerves." She added, "There's nerves anytime you're going to work and you walk out the door and there's throngs of people with their cameras . . . I still didn't know what Nya Wallace was going to be. And part of the process of working with other people and vibing with writers and producers [is] just sort of discovering that as...

Midge and the gang are back with the fourth season of Amazon Prime Video’s “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.” The first trailer just dropped along with confirmation that the series will return on February 18, 2022. Season 3 left audiences with Midge (Rachel Brosnahan) and her manager Susie (Alex Borstein) on an airport tarmac after discovering they’d been dropped for their recent touring gig after Midge unintentionally outed headliner Shy Baldwin (LeRoy McClain).
“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” continues to have a devoted following, with last season being one of the series’ more ambitious as Midge finally secured her big break on the standup circuit. Because of that, the series expanded into the creation of original songs and an enhanced wardrobe.
In an interview with IndieWire last year, costume designer Donna Zakowska said, “We’re still dealing with the issue in this period that female comedians are not very glamorous. It’s just...

It’s a marvelous day because Amazon Prime Video is giving viewers a first look at Season 4 of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. For the third year in a row, Rachel Brosnahan is among the Primetime Emmy nominees for Best Comedy Actress for her performance as the title character on Amazon’s “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.” She already won for the first season in 2018, while last season she took a backseat to Phoebe Waller-Bridge during the awards sweep for her series “Fleabag.” Earlier this year Brosnahan also won a SAG Award (along with the rest of the cast) as TV’s best comedy ensemble; that was her third SAG win overall for the show. Her episode submission for the Emmys this year is the season three finale, “A Jewish Girl Walks Into the Apollo …”

Sterling K. Brown did what very few actors have done, turning a guest role on “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” into a supporting actor nomination at the Emmys. This is because he was in too many episodes to qualify in guest, but it speaks to the amount of love for Brown in the industry, considering he also landed another bid for his actual series regular role on “This Is Us” on the drama side. Brown had a recurring role on the Amazon comedy series as Reggie, the manager for popular singer Shy Baldwin (Leroy McClain) for whom Midge (Rachel Brosnahan) is opening.
Brown is submitting “Panty Pose” to Emmy voters, the third episode of the third season. In this episode, Reggie, Shy, Midge, Susie (Alex Borstein) and the rest of the crew travel to Las Vegas. On the plane, we see Reggie calming Susie’s nerves of being up in the air.

The special was inspired by the season 3 finale of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, centered on the history of the theater and the various performances there. Show business has often proven to be fertile ground for humor, and this year’s Emmy comedy series race is no different. Several of the shows up for the top TV prize in that genre this year offer a funny look inside different aspects of the industry. So what is it that makes entertainment so entertaining?
“The entertainment industry is filled with some wonderfully selfish people, a lot of whom happen to live on the Westside of Los Angeles,” says Jeff Schaffer, executive producer of “Curb Your Enthusiasm.” “That’s ‘Curb’s’ fountain of youth: Documenting the social missteps of the Westside is a completely evergreen business.”
But creators of other shows such as Netflix’s “The Kominsky Method” or Amazon Prime Video’s “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” say that it was never their intention to make a show about show business.

Judging by Gold Derby’s combined odds, Alex Borstein seems destined to make a triple play this year, thanks to her performance as Susie Myerson, the scathingly uncensored and tomboyish sidekick and manager of Rachel Brosnahan‘s stand-up comic Midge on Amazon’s “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.” If the actress — who also has a Emmy for voicing Lois Griffin on the animated series “Family Guy” — goes 3-for-3, she will be the fifth supporting funny lady to do so. The members of this club are sitcom legends Valerie Harper (“The Mary Tyler Moore Show”), Rhea Perlman (“Cheers”), Laurie Metcalf (“Roseanne”) and Doris Roberts (“Everybody Loves Raymond”). Not bad company at all.
Right now, Borstein is way ahead of her closest competition, Annie Murphy of “Schitt’s Creek,” among users of Gold Derby’s prediction site. She boasts 1146 backers and 9/2 odds while Murphy has 423 total votes and 5/1 odds.

You might recall the success of last year’s “Maisel Day,” a one-day event in Los Angeles put on by Amazon Prime Video as part of their FYC campaign for “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.” You could get sandwiches, cupcakes, even a hotel room for the price they were in 1959. Suffice it to say it was a massive success — it isn’t a party unless the cops get called — and set the bar high for this year’s Emmy campaign.
Unfortunately, like most of 2020, the global pandemic put a monkey wrench into everything, including the Emmy plans for “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” which is up for a whopping 20 Primetime Emmy Awards. But like Midge Maisel (Rachel Brosnahan) herself, they’re adapting and working with what they got. This year’s Emmys campaign seeks to remind you just what makes “Mrs. Maisel” so marvelous — virtually.
