New Delhi, Feb 17 (Ians) Mohammed Shami, Ravichandran Ashwin, and Ravindra Jadeja took a wicket each for India as Australia made 199/6 in 56 overs at tea on day one of the second Test at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Friday.
It was a session where a good crowd in the stadium was treated to engrossing cricket between the two teams. Usman Khawaja carried on to make 81, with Peter Handscomb and captain Pat Cummins unbeaten on 36 and 23 respectively.
Travis Head began the session by slashing Shami through gully for a boundary. He was patient against Ashwin, and when the off-spinner flighted a delivery in the 31st over, Head was quick to dance down the pitch to slam a six down the ground.
But in the very next over, Head flashed hard off Shami on seeing some width. But he perfectly nicked to second slip, who took the catch above his shoulder. Handscomb got...

For Australia, who elected to bat first after winning the toss, left-handed opener Usman Khawaja was precise in footwork and pristine in strokeplay to make 81, the first fifty by a visiting batter on the ongoing tour. Peter Handscomb looked impressive in his 72 not out. But losing wickets in back-to-back fashion thrice may come to hurt them later on.
The final session began with Australia reaching 200 in 59.4 overs. Handscomb started off by using the pace from Axar Patel’s delivery to guide past slip for a boundary. When Jadeja pitched outside the off-stump, Handscomb was quick to go on backfoot and punch past backward-point for another boundary.
After Handscomb got his fifty in 110 balls, Jadeja broke the stubborn 59-run stand by trapping Pat Cummins lbw, with the Australian skipper burning a review. Two balls later, Jadeja castled Todd Murphy through the gate.
Nathan Lyon was delightful in punching and driving off Shami.

Perth, Nov 29 (Ians) Australia captain Pat Cummins has confirmed the make-up of the XI that will take the field for his side in the first Test against the West Indies here.
There are no major surprises in the final XI for the first home Test of the Australian summer, with Cummins confirming one change to the team that featured in the most recent Test match in Sri Lanka.
Experienced seamer Josh Hazlewood returns to Australia’s line-up, with back-up spinner Mitchell Swepson making way following Australia’s demoralising loss to Sri Lanka in Galle in July.
Swepson picked up figures of 3/103 in that match, but the 29-year-old was not selected in the squad for the West Indies series as Australia reverted to their standard line-up with three seamers and the solitary spinner.
Veteran openers David Warner and Usman Khawaja retain their places at the top of Australia’s batting order,...

Cairns, Sep 11 (Ians) Steve Smith smashed his 12th Odi hundred while the bowlers starred as Australia completed a 3-0 sweep of New Zealand for the Chappell-Hadlee Trophy with a thrilling 25-run win in the third and final match of the series at Cairns on Sunday.
There was no fairy-tale finish with the bat for captain Aaron Finch, playing in his final Odi match.
But he was able to sign off from a 50-over career with a victory, thanks to Smith’s 105, with 52 from Marnus Labuschagne and 42 not out from Alex Carey giving him ample support as Australia made 267/5. Then, Australia’s bowlers, led by Mitchell Starc’s 3/60, put in a collective, spirited effort to thwart a challenge from New Zealand’s middle-order and bowl out the visitors for 242.
The 25-run win takes Australia to the second spot in the Icc Men’s Cricket World Cup Super League points table with 120 points.

Cairns, Sep 10 (Ians) Injured all-rounder Marcus Stoinis on Saturday was ruled out of Australia’s third and final Odi against New Zealand, to be held at Cairns on Sunday. Apart from Stoinis, opener David Warner has been released from the squad to manage his workload ahead of 12 hectic months of international cricket.
Pace bowler Nathan Ellis, who has played three ODIs for Australia and finished stints with Hampshire and London Spirit in England, was drafted in as a replacement for Stoinis, who will now undergo treatment for a low-level side strain.
“Stoinis will undergo treatment in rehabilitation in Perth leading into the tour of India,” said Cricket Australia (CA).
In case of Warner, Cricket Australia said he was given time off “considering a heavy workload over the next 12 months and the series being secured”.
Warner has not been included in the three-match T20I tour of India to be held...

Cairns (Australia), Sep 6 (Ians) A sublime 158-run partnership between Alex Carey and Cameron Green and a four-wicket haul by Glenn Maxwell helped Australia register a two-wicket win in the opening One-Day International match against New Zealand in Cairns on Tuesday.
Joining forces at 5/44 in response to New Zealand’s 232, Carey (85 off 99 balls) and Green (89 not out off 92 balls) flourished on a Cazalys Stadium pitch where almost every other batter had faced issues.
Although hampered by cramps in his left leg, a hobbling Green powered on as he and Adam Zampa’s 26-run ninth-wicket partnership got Australia across the line by two wickets in a tense finish.
But it wasn’t a comfortable two-wicket win for Australia — Carey’s dismissal with 31 runs required prompted a mini-collapse with Maxwell (two off eight) and Mitch Starc (one off three) following in quick succession. There was a seven-minute break in play with 23 runs left...
