Indie Spanish film studio Filmax has picked up international sales rights to “Alumbramiento” (‘Birth’), the sophomore feature by Pau Teixidor (“Purgatorio”), set up at Aquí y Allí Films, the production house run by Pedro Hernández Santos and behind “Something is About to Happen,” and “Life and Nothing More.”
Co-written by Teixidor and Lorena Iglesias (“Towards Bruce Lee’s Tomb”), and inspired by real events, the feature narrates the moving story of Lucia, a teenager sent to a centre for young, pregnant girls in Spain, in 1982.
In her feature length debut, Spanish actress Sofía Milán (“Love in Difficult Times”) plays Lucía, who’s been taken to Madrid by her mother Marisa to find a solution for an unwanted pregnancy.
Lucía ends up in Peñagrande, a reformatory for teen mothers-to-be where she will forge strong friendships with the other girls and discover the awful truth that her not yet born child is...

We are three weeks away until Fantastic Fest. Kind of amazing to think about. This year, I am blessed to bring Mike Hassler with me. We will be seeing as many films as our eyeballs will see and writing as many reviews as our fingers will allow us. Take a look at the second wave announcement below and don’t forget to look at the first wave and my predictions of what might play at the fest (I didn’t fare well with the Second Wave). As before, I have included the trailers for all the films, if available, announced in this wave.

Open Road’s Jake Gyllenhaal starrer Nightcrawler will close the 10th annual Fantastic Fest in its U.S. premiere and Keanu Reeves will drop by for a gala screening of Lionsgate’s John Wick, organizers announced today. The rising genre film fest held September 18-25 in Austin, TX will open with the previously announced Tusk from Kevin Smith.
Also unveiled today along with a second wave of programming is a centerpiece bout in the Fantastic Debates, in which filmmakers, critics, and celebs engage in discourse at a podium before taking it to the boxing ring to determine the ultimate winner. This year, BitTorrent’s Chief Content Officer Matt Mason will take on a challenger to duke it out over whether the file sharing platform is a valuable tool or an enabler of piracy.

Following up on my previous article, “Watch 15 Great Horror Short Films,” which received a very positive response, I’ve researched and collected 13 more superb horror short films. As with the first article, I limited the choices to stand-alone live-action horror short films not produced for an anthology film and the selections were narrowed down by availability.
In further keeping with the criteria of the first article, animated horror short films and horror-comedy short films were excluded from consideration as both of these categories would make good subjects for their own individual articles. Sorry, Brutal Relax and Fist of Jesus fans.
It should also be noted that a number of highly regarded horror shorts readers might clamor to see in an article like this such as Ryan Haysom’s Yellow continue their long festival runs and have not been posted for online viewing and were therefore not considered for this piece.

Director Catalan Pau Teixidor ('Leyenda') will make his feature debut with new Spanish thriller 'Purgatorio'. The new project from Apaches Entertainment is set to star the gorgeous Oona Chaplin (below) whom is better known to many as the ex-Talisa Maegyr in HBO's 'Game of Thrones'. The psychological thriller will see Chaplin play a young woman whom finds herself involved in an extremely scary situation when she offers to babysit her neighbours child. Oona is the granddaughter of famous silent movie star Charlie Chaplin and is actually named after her grandmother Oona O'Neill, Charlie's fourth wife. Teixidor will helm from a script by Luis Moreno which had a bit of re-write contribution from 'The Orphanage' scribe Sergio G. Sanchez....
