As 2023 hits its final straights, Spain’s “Nowhere,” a mother-baby survival thriller, rates as the most-viewed non-English title – film or series – of 2023, with 77.9 million views. It also ranks as Netflix’s second most-watched non-English movie of all time, currently punching 141.6 million hours, bettered only by Norway’s “Troll.”
“Nowhere” also has legs: No other non-English Netflix movie has punched 1.6 million views on its seventh week of release.
That achievement is all the more remarkable given that “Nowhere” is also the first title by the film’s producer Miguel Ruz and exec producer Jordi Roca at their new Madrid-based production company Rock & Ruz which they launched after the success of their first film together, Mario Casas-starrer “The Paramedic” (“El Practicante”), also on Netflix.
Made for an above-average budget for Spain, based on an original story by Indiana Lista (“Scandinoir”), “Nowhere” is co-written by producers Ruz and Ernest Riera alongside...

Former Netflix exec Juan Mayne has hung his own shingle, Madrid-based N&l Films, which is bulwarked by strong talent relationships, a strategic alliance with Exile Content and a sure sense of market opportunities for Spain-based independent producers.
Exile Content and N&l Films have struck a first-look development deal. Jeff Glaser, who oversaw Netflix production finance in Mexico City and Madrid, has joined the company.
N&l’s first slate includes a Mexican remake of “Miracle in Cell No. 7,” co-produced by Rock & Ruz and Mexico’s Corazón Films, which will handle distribution in the country, and “Aristides: A Righteous Life,” the true-life account of a Portuguese diplomat who saved thousands from the Nazis in WWII, from Seanne Winslow.
N&l is also in conversations with with Lluis Quilez and Fernando Navarro – director and writer of Netflix Top 10 non-English movie “Below Zero” – to develop a true crime film based...

Dubai-based Front Row Filmed Entertainment has acquired all Middle East and North Africa rights to Oman-set drama “The Falconer,” co-directed by Adam Sjöberg and Seanne Winslow. The movie has been billed as the first international feature film shot entirely in the sultanate.
“Falconer” is a tale of two teenagers from different worlds, one a local villager named Tariq, the other a white Westerner named Cai, who are best friends. Together, they steal and sell zoo animals to raise money for the local boy’s sister to pay for a divorce from an abusive marriage.
Pic is produced by the directors and David Jacobson (“The Butler”) who sold the film directly to Front Row. Shot in both English and Arabic and starring newcomers Rami Zahar, Rupert Fennessy, and Noor Al Huda, “Falconer” had its world premiere at the Heartland International Film festival in Indianapolis, where it won the “Best Premiere” award.

In one of the biggest swings in Europe’s market, Erik Barmack, the former Netflix VP of international originals, is teaming with Benjamin Munz, producer of “Blood Red Sky,” Netflix’s most-watched non-English movie of all time, on a tentpole high-speed German action film, “The Chase.”
Billed by Barmack as “‘The Fast and the Furious’ meets ‘Money Heist’” – which he helped bring to Netflix – “The Chase” marks the first movie out of the gate at Munz’s Berlin-based new label, Fright Zone, the first production company in Germany that will focus exclusively on developing and producing fantasy, action, horror and science fiction films as well as TV shows in and from Germany.
Overseen by founder and CEO Munz, Fright Zone will produce with Barmack, who is now working out of his own L.A. label, Wild Sheep Content, a company that he started with The Mediapro Studio, headed by Laura Fernández Espeso.

Variety is reporting that Warner Bros. has found another book series to take under their wing, the lucky winner this time around being Otherland. The Tad Williams-written sci-fi series is comprised of four books — City of Golden Shadow, River of Blue Fire, Mountain of Black Glass, and Sea of Silver Light — which John Scott III will adapt for producer Dan Lin.
Variety describes the story, set “100 years in the future,” as following “a group of unexpected heroes who must escape an assassin and make their way through epic digital worlds to unravel a conspiracy that threatens to destroy humanity.” Seanne Winslow Wehrenfennig will produce alongside Lin for Lin Pictures; no directors, stars, or even release timelines have been given out at the moment, and we’ll probably have to wait for things to advance a little more before those come in.
The basic idea behind it sounds very reminiscent...
