The Dell Sound & the Jury competition that began months earlier with hundreds of bands competing online came to a head a couple days ago when The Bright Light Social Hour was chosen as top band. Their reward: To be one of the bands to kick off Acl Fest. Their Dell Stage performance didn't disappoint. They are a blast to watch, and I can't get their songs out of my head.
I missed most of the other early bands as we were busy at the Paste Media Tent doing video interviews with artists for a later website A/V feature. I lost count on how many bands came by to talk with us but they included Raphael Saadiq, The Low Anthem, Mishka, Todd Snider, The Parlor Mob, Daniel Johnston, The Wood Brothers, Thievery Corporation, Jesse Woods and Reckless Kelly.
Everyone agreed that the day's weather was the best anyone can remember...

Just like everyone else, film festivals have been hurting from the economic downturn. A piece of advice for all you ailing fests: give Tim League, co-founder of Fantastic Fest, a holler. Now in its fifth year League has created a monster of an event where I, the fan, am the most important person in the theater. You know you're doing something right when next year's VIP seats sell out in a matter of minutes which is exactly what happened earlier this week. You hear that? Sold out one year in advance! Aside from the typical horror genre they cover other stuff related to action, fantasy, sci-fi and anything else that falls under the moniker of "fantastic". You'll get your dose of blood and gore but the fest has surprised attendees with the world premieres of films like Apocalypto, There Will Be Blood, and Eagle Eye. And guests have included folks like Mel Gibson,...

The arrest of the director Roman Polanksi on Sunday (read FilmShaft’s original report on the incident Here), has stoked the ire of the entertainment establishment, with French culture minister Frederic Mitterand joining the clamour of stars and industry insiders, Monica Belluci and Harvey Weinstein amongst them, who see the filmmaker’s surprise arrest on 32 year old child sex charges as an affront to common sense.
The extraordinary row has put the French minister on a war footing with the Los Angeles District Attorney’s office, who intend to make good on the arrest warrant originally issued in 1978 subject to successful extradition to the Us from Switzerland, where Polanksi has been in custody since Sunday morning.
Polanksi, now 76, who has a home in Switzerland and has visited the country many times over a period of 15 years, had assumed he’d be safe as he attended the Zurich Film Festival to accept a lifetime achievement award.

The reason why film festivals pick movies like Creation for opening night is that they have all the right credentials: respected producer (Jeremy Thomas) and director (Jon Amiel) and two major stars (Paul Bettany and Jennifer Connelly) willing to show up for the gala Tiff screenings and party. But Creation was Doa tonight. Flat, dull, and painful to sit through, Creation brings none of the excitement, energy and radical thought that …...

The 10th anniversary Frightfest is underway in London, and for once I’m not in the cheap seats. Ladies and gentlemen – I think I have finally arrived. The atmosphere in the virtually packed out Empire Leicester Square has been electric - buzzing like a chainsaw, even. Weekend pass holders abound, a genuine spirit of camaraderie prevails and there’s already a good vibe passing back and forth amongst us that we’re in for the best Frightfest yet. It’s definitely the biggest and the glitziest. Year on year the event has scaled up and now we’re dealing with not one but two screens in one of London’s biggest and busiest cinemas. The programme is packed with premieres, many of them world premieres, and there’s a heavy load of special guests, Q&As and other surprise horror bric a brac scheduled for the five-day event. We started on a real high.

Its day one here in San Diego for the 40th annual San Diego Comic-Con. There’s many different things that bring people to the Con and one of them is the opportunity, nay the almost near necessity, of showing up dressed as your favorite character from movies, manga, anime, comics, novels or TV.
Naturally, as we’re here in San Diego to cover all the festivities and bring them to you, what better way to highlight the fun then by showing you some of the costumes, both good and not-so-good, we encountered today on the floor, in the hallways and out in front of the convention center.
So, without further to do, here’s a good selection of costumed fans from today right after the jump. Be sure to check back right here at The Flickcast for all your Comic-Con 2009 coverage.

When last we left the Torchwood team, they were still reeling from the deaths of two of their own and the return of their leader’s now-vengeful younger brother. The four radio plays in between have helped us whet our appetite but if you’re like me, you’ve been waiting with bated breath for the new season of BBC America’s top-rated import. Wait no more, as tonight begins a controversial five-night mini-season that will change the franchise forever.
If you’ve been watching BBC America for five minutes over the last two months, you know the general premise: all the children on the planet Earth stop at random intervals, announcing as one the arrival of a fearsome alien entity known only (and oh how creatively) as the 456. Meanwhile, the members of Torchwood are being hunted down by the British government as their past catches up with them. Anyone want to guess whose?...

Torchwood is one of my favorite TV series because it’s built on top of a great TV legend, Doctor Who. Torchwood is a spin off series of the rebooted Doctor Who and it’s ran for a few seasons. It’s different than Doctor Who because it handles more adult topics and it’s language and violence and even sex can be a little over the top. Doctor Who is a family friendly show by comparison.
Both Doctor Who and Torchwood are taking a part time break and rather than bring us full seasons of TV we’re getting different specials from both. Doctor Who had an Easter special and now Torchwood has a five part mini-series called “Children of Earth.”
When the mini-series starts we’re taken back to 1965 with several children on a old bus in the middle of nowhere. They’re dropped off and all suddenly...

Having never read any of the "Twilight" books, it's sort of odd that I find myself in select company. I'm one of the few journalists who has had the opportunity to visit both the sets of "Twilight" and its highly anticipated sequel, "The Twilight Saga: New Moon." And yes, "Twilight" fans, I don't take this responsibility lightly, but boy have times changed. When I first visited the 'Twilight' set in 2008 while writing my former column for MSN (an offer a number of outlets were dumb to turn down) it was a much less dramatic affair. The trip consisted of just...

Warner Bros. Pictures' Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince earned a massive $58.4 million from 4,275 theaters domestically on Wednesday, including a record-setting $22.2 million from midnight shows. The opening is the second-best Wednesday ever, trailing only the $62 million Michael Bay's Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen made on June 24. The biggest day ever for a film was set by The Dark Knight with $67.2 million last year on July 18. "Half-Blood Prince's" tally bested the $44 million earned by Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix on its opening Wednesday two years ago. It went on to earn $139.7 million domestically its first five days.

What an episode! The popular Doctor Who spin off Torchwood made it’s triumphant return this evening on BBC One, and despite the fact it was a one hour episode it had the air of a major Hollywood picture around it.
An ordinary day becomes a world of terror as every single child in the world stops. A message is sent to all the governments of Earth: ‘We are coming’. But as a trap closes around Captain Jack, sins of the past are returning, as long-forgotten events from 1965 threaten to reveal an awful truth.
That was the synopsis to the first episode in the Torchwood five-part miniseries, which has just aired on BBC One, and it barely manages to express the sheer size of production that this new series of the popular sci-fi drama promises.
Government conspiracies, Alien Abduction and painful past memories all made up the 60 minute episode, which...

About 7,000 people turned up at Boston's Gillette Stadium to get a chance to be the next "American Idol". The audition for season 9 was kicked off on Sunday, June 14 but hopefuls had turned up as early as 3 A.M. to get in line which stretched out to as far as the parking lot of the stadium.
The people were coming from all over the U.S. region, ranging from the East Coast area such as New York, up to North Carolina. In order to wait for their turn, they have to endure the not-so-friendly weather. Past Life, a series about a psychic detective agency, will hold the same spot on Tuesdays. Slotting after Idol means both will be mid-season shows A new sitcom will be added to Fox’s schedule, Sons of Tucson will be plopped in the middle of their Sunday animation block, replacing King of the Hill. Cannes kicked off with a gentle, sweet even sublime film: Pixar's Up. As I've written before, Pixar is on a streak of critical and commercial successes (10 and counting) that is simply unparalleled in Hollywood history. No star, no director, no studio has ever accomplished what Pixar has wrought with its first ten movies. They range from pretty good to good to great to classic. And every single one has been a major commercial success. Just listing them is impressive: Toy Story A Bug's Life Toy Story 2 Monsters Inc. Finding Nemo The Incredibles Cars Ratatouille (now That should have opened Cannes!) Wall-e and now Up. It has some fine action scenes and witty banter involving dogs equipped with hi-tech collars that let us hear their thoughts. ("Squirrel!" is a big favorite.) But the lasting impression of this gem is gentle and sweet. No wonder the filmmakers genuflected at the...

Day one at the Hong Kong Filmart has wrapped up as the jet lag catches up but not before I saw a bunch of interesting stuff. Stuff I neglected to take notes on, unfortunately, so I’m working largely from memory here ...
First, the prize for most ridiculously over the top market booth is being hotly contested between Kung Fu Cyborg and Future X Cops, both of which are boasting gloriously oversized setups complete with architecture, props and multiple video screens. I think Cops wins out here, however, by virtue of having Andy Lau’s cop-ship parked on top of it. And, yes, both films are screening brand new promo reels that promise Hong Kong will soon have two huge budget b-films duking it out for box office supremacy. Kung Fu Cyborg looks silly beyond words, but in a rather good way.

The Twilight DVD went on sale Saturday at 12:01 Am and sold 3 million copies in the first 24 hours, according to Summit Entertainment.
It’s massive sales numbers put it in the top 5 DVD release days of the past two years, including Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, The Dark Knight, Transformers, and Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End.
DVDs usually hit shelves on Tuesday, but Summit took a gamble and switched the big release to a Saturday. It paid off because its mostly younger audience was able to stay up later on the weekend for the midnight release parties across the country. The special two-disc addition includes loads of commentaries from Catherine Hardwicke, Kristen Stewart, and Robert Pattinson, extended/deleted scenes, and a seven-part documentary.
Summit also made the movie available on video-on-demand the same day as the DVD, a rare move for a big release.

Okay, you can hate me a little! At least Idina's adorable hubby Taye Diggs wasn't here, so you don't have to be jealous of that.
Aside from enjoying Menzel's talents, we had some one-on-one time with the one and only Sir Ian McKellen. Read all about it after the jump!
Menzel, who has a stunning voice, is also beautiful and very very funny. She shared an anecdote about recently meeting her two favorite icons — Barbra Streisand and Aretha Franklin — who apparently weren't exactly overwhelming with their praise of Menzel (but methinks Menzel was just being modest).

Arrived in Venice, to be greeted by Terence Hill. Not in person, you understand, with brass band and Bud Spencer on trombone, but, turning on the TV in my hotel room, there was Terence, beaming blandly. . . . This seemed auspicious, not only because I’m here to cover the Spaghetti Western retrospective at this year’s Venice Film Festival, which includes two Terence Hill movies, but also because Terence is, apparently, as revealed by some remarkably tedious and unproductive research prior to this trip, Venice’s greatest gift to cinema. Indeed, it seems he is Venice’s only gift to cinema – or at any rate, the only one with any serious claim to international recognition. Which seems odd, somehow, given La Serenissima’s high profile in the film world due to the Festival, to say nothing of its appearance as a location in literally hundreds of movies, but there it is.
